In this episode of the TruVue Podcast, we bring the barbershop talk to the box office with Speak No Evil (2024), the chilling horror-thriller that redefines the term "AirBN Flee." Imagine booking a cozy countryside getaway, only to find your hosts are auditioning for the next season of Psycho B&B. Yeah, it's that kind of nightmare. The film follows an American family who, after a seemingly innocent vacation friendship, accepts an invitation to visit their new British acquaintances. What starts as an awkward cultural exchange quickly spirals into a masterclass of discomfort and dread. It's like Meet the Parents meets The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with a dash of Get Out for good measure. But it's not about the review; it's the conversation with the crew as we dissect the film's slow-burn tension, the social niceties that make you want to scream, and the ultimate lesson: sometimes, it's okay to be rude if it means staying alive. So grab your popcorn and your emergency exit plan as we explore why Speak No Evil (2024) might just make you think twice before clicking "Book Now" on that charming countryside retreat. Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! today is January 11, 2024, and what are we going to review Together Forever (1987) Link: https://youtu.be/do1tUMzUwTQ?si=C0zynZWsY67rB46i Running time: 29 minutes Rating: not rated Genre: religious drama A brief summary Summary: This is a presentation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints missionaries use to teach people about families being together forever. Several families who have experienced tragedy are chronicled as well as wayward souls who are brought back to the fold. The end of the film testifies that families can indeed be together forever Together Forever, was directed by Michael McClean who also contributed several landmark songs to the film such as the eponymous “Together Forever” as well as “Stay with Me,” and “Be that Friend.” It is a series of four different vignettes of couples or individuals who discuss how they found meaning in life through their discovery of Mormonism, oops, I meant to say the plan of salvation. Although this short film is available on videocassette, the church also broadcast Together Forever on network television. In the beginning of 1989 this film aired in every U.S. city with an LDS mission headquarters. The film won the Catholic-sponsored Gabriel Award and received an 8 out of 10 on a Neilsen TV survey. Together forever repeatedly emphasizes the importance of making time for families, it doesn't deal with the more obvious question, why do we need mormonism for that, again? This and other similar church videos of this era could be ordered for free through a phone number provided in church purchased TV commercials, viewers could elect to have this and other LDS tapes delivered personally by missionaries instead of through the mail by a postman These VHS tape orders became known to missionaries as Media referrals. As a full time missionary in the 1990s, I remember getting calls a couple of times a week to hand deliver this specific VHS tape to investigators and deliver a message. They really made missionary work a lot easier. The most ironic thing about media referrals like together forever, is that the message we gave had little to do with the video! Instead, regardless of what video they requested, we would give the standard missionary first discussion which covered God, Jesus, and never forget, Joseph Smith Lemme turn up the volume, I think I'm gonna cry…or throw up…. video emphasizes that it is important to make time for families, it doesn't deal with the more obvious question, why do we need mormonism for that? Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! My name is Dives EP 65 - The Home Teachers (2004) Running time: 80 minutes Genre: A religious comedy Rated: PG Synopsis "The Home Teachers" is a delightful 2004 Mormon comedy film directed by Kurt Hale. The story revolves around two mismatched home teachers, Greg and Nelson, who are assigned to visit and support a struggling family in their congregation. Greg, played by Michael Birkeland, is a well-meaning but somewhat clumsy and disorganized individual, while Nelson, portrayed by Jeff Birk, is a meticulous and by-the-book perfectionist. Despite their differences, the two are paired together as home teaching companions and tasked with the responsibility of uplifting and assisting the Callister family. The Callisters, consisting of the father Jared, played by Kirby Heyborne, and his two daughters, Sarah and Rachel, are facing a variety of challenges in their lives. Jared, a single father, is struggling to balance his job and parental responsibilities, while his daughters are dealing with typical teenage issues such as school, relationships, and self-esteem. As Greg and Nelson attempt to fulfill their home teaching duties, they find themselves in a series of hilarious and awkward situations, often due to Greg's clumsiness and Nelson's rigid adherence to protocol. Despite their best efforts, their visits to the Callister household seem to only exacerbate the family's problems rather than solve them. However, as they continue to interact with the Callisters, Greg and Nelson begin to realize that their presence and friendship are making a positive impact on the family. Through their genuine concern and willingness to listen, they are able to provide much-needed support and encouragement to Jared and his daughters. "The Home Teachers" is a heartwarming and humorous film that highlights the importance of community, friendship, and compassion. It emphasizes the idea that sometimes, the greatest help we can offer to others is simply being there for them and showing them that they are not alone in their struggles. With its endearing characters, witty humor, and heartfelt message, "The Home Teachers" is a charming cinematic experience that resonates with audiences of all backgrounds, regardless of their religious affiliation. It reminds us that even in the midst of life's challenges, laughter and friendship can be powerful sources of strength and comfort. Conclusion The RM is hilarious, and the singles ward is funny, but the apple fell far from the tree when it comes to the home teachers. I recently spoke with Jim Bennett who plays a small role in the movie, and even he acknowledges that it is a bad film. Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! I am your humble host, Dives EP 77 - Passage to Zarahemla (2007) Running time: 1hr 35min Rating: pg 13 Genre: Adventure/Drama This review works best if you have seen this film before, though that is not required. Synopsis Passage to Zarahemla" is a 2003 fantasy adventure film directed by Chris Heimerdinger. The story revolves around two teenagers, Chris and Clay, who find themselves unexpectedly transported back in time to ancient America, where they encounter the Nephites and Lamanites, two warring factions from the Book of Mormon. The film begins with Chris, a troubled teenager struggling with the recent loss of his parents, and Clay, his rebellious younger brother. After an argument with their foster parents, the brothers run away from home and embark on a journey that leads them to an unexpected portal in the woods. Upon entering the portal, they find themselves in the ancient land of Zarahemla. In Zarahemla, Chris and Clay are separated, each encountering different groups of people. Chris meets a kind-hearted Nephite girl named Zarahemla, while Clay is captured by the Lamanites, the enemies of the Nephites. As Chris and Zarahemla embark on a quest to rescue Clay and find a way back home, they must navigate the dangers of the ancient world and confront their own inner demons. Throughout their journey, Chris and Zarahemla learn important lessons about courage, friendship, and faith. They discover the power of forgiveness and redemption as they strive to overcome the challenges they face. Along the way, they encounter various characters from the Book of Mormon, including the righteous prophet Alma and the villainous Amalickiah. As the film reaches its climax, Chris and Zarahemla must confront Amalickiah and his army in a final showdown to save Clay and return home. With the help of their newfound allies, they are able to defeat Amalickiah and find their way back to the present day. "Passage to Zarahemla" is a heartwarming tale that combines elements of fantasy, adventure, and spirituality. While the film's low budget is evident in its production values, the storyline and lame performances from the cast add to its shortcomings. The film laughably brings the world of the Book of Mormon to life, offering viewers a glimpse into the ancient civilization of the Nephites and Lamanites. Overall, "Passage to Zarahemla" is an uplifting and but not at all entertaining film that is sure to resonate with audiences of all ages. While it may not have the polish of a big-budget Hollywood production, its heartfelt message and engaging storyline make it a worthwhile watch for anyone looking for a howlingly bad cinematic experience. Truly terrible film. Absolutely nothing redeemable. They ought to put a warning on movies like this. When it comes to the passage of Zarahemla, I'd like to put the DVD into the time portal near Leeds Utah so that no one ever watches it again. Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! My name is Dives, today is Sep 21, 2022 this is episode and will we be reviewing EP - Cipher on the Snow (1974) Running time: 21 minutes "Cipher in the Snow" is a poignant and thought-provoking Mormon short film released in 1974, directed by Kieth Merrill. The story revolves around a tragic event that leaves a profound impact on those who witness it. The film begins with a young boy named Cliff, portrayed by Bruce Kimball, who is depicted as a quiet and withdrawn student struggling to connect with his peers. Despite his attempts to reach out and make friends, Cliff is often met with indifference and even cruelty from his classmates. One winter morning, Cliff's teacher discovers him sitting silently at his desk, unresponsive and seemingly lifeless. The school staff and students are shocked and saddened by Cliff's sudden death, and they struggle to understand what could have led to such a tragic outcome. Through a series of flashbacks and interviews with Cliff's classmates and teachers, the film pieces together the events leading up to his death. It becomes apparent that Cliff's isolation and loneliness were profound, and despite the efforts of some individuals to reach out to him, he remained deeply troubled and disconnected. As the story unfolds, viewers are confronted with themes of bullying, social isolation, and the devastating impact of indifference. "Cipher in the Snow" serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion, empathy, and reaching out to those in need. Despite its short runtime, the film leaves a lasting impression, prompting viewers to reflect on their own interactions with others and consider the profound impact small acts of kindness can have on those who are struggling. "Cipher in the Snow" is a moving and thought-provoking exploration of the human condition, offering valuable insights into the complexities of loneliness, empathy, and the power of human connection. References A DVD of the movie is available through BYU's Creative Works Office. https://creativeworks.byu.edu/Creativ... Conclusion there's a lot of people who like to mock this movie, but I WANT to treasure this movie while some aspects of the short are a little far-fetched, you can also take the moral of the movie to its logical conclusion: If I am not kind to others, they will die, which is not a good lesson I remember watching this film as a young boy at church, and while I did think that some of the parts were a little cheesy, the message of the short left me wanting to be a better person. I too experienced divorce and family trials as a youth, perhaps one reason that I connect so strongly with Cliff. Now that I am older and a former public school teacher who taught some potential ciphers in the snow, I also easily find myself sympathetic to Frank. I think it delivers a powerful and emotionally compelling narrative, this film has sticking power. if you look past the film's minor shortcomings to the timeless kernel of its universal message of kindness to others, the cipher in the snow will not leave you out in the cold Thanks so much for joining me to review this film, please like, subscribe, leave a comment, and join us next time for another episode of the MormonMovieReviews: Where LDS Movie Lovers Belong. Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! I am your host, Dives, EP 74: That Which Was Lost (1969) Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzkdiSYmiIQ Running time: 27 minutes Rating: PG Genre: Religious Drama Synopsis As Rick becomes associated with hippies, the concern of an adviser and an unpleasant experience help him to realize the importance of some of the things he thought he could give up. Shows how love and persistence can bring back the "lost sheep." Film Background This is an official video produced by the COJCOLDS. Along with this version, a non-denominational cut and a secular cut were also produced. But I couldn't find the other cuts video on the video library churchofjesuchrist.org Email MormonMovieReviews@gmail.com Let's briefly analyze the movie's message. Recall the three less active members at the beginning of the movie, the lazy teacher who just stayed in bed, the mother who refused to take her child to primary because she was too busy, and the young woman who liked the latest fashions. Those are the two basic stereotypes perpetuated by the church; less active members are lazy or just want to sin. Rick fits that second mold as well, he doesn't like the church because he wants to sin. But the film also introduces a rarely seen third paradigm with Rick and his father, Brother Baldwin is a faithful father, remember, he's a return missionary, however, as a priesthood holder he is well intentioned but doesn't place a high priority on his son's welfare. Rick went astray because brother Baldwin didn't love him enough, as evidenced by his father's trite obsession with hair length and refusal to spend time with him, like going to the priest quorum activity on the beach. Finally, let's discuss the final scenes at Turtle's house, especially Lilly's manic episode. Deep down, sinners really want to be rescued. They are portrayed as truely unhappy, even though they may present a happy exterior. The film perpetuates the idea that hippies like Turtle don't actually care about one another. While they profess brotherhood and ‘free love', they won't be there when they are really needed because they are inherently selfish. Turtle bailed on his girlfriend at the drop of a hat, even though she was in serious distress. Final thoughts Only righteous members of the church like Larry can be counted on. Hippies are not to be trusted. Fathers need to prioritize time with their children. The director of the short Wetzel O. Whitaker should have added the following subtitle to this movie: That which was lost: Be like Larry. Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! My name is Dives and will we be reviewing EP - Saturday's Warrior (1989) https://youtu.be/--w9bOGpi2s Running time: 115 minutes This review works best if you have seen this film before, though that is not required. Spoiler alert Synopsis Two siblings make promises to each other in the pre-existence, but find themselves on very different paths once on Earth. There is a lot to unpack with Saturday's Warrior. Doctrinal issues, abortion, family planning, child abuse, loss of a loved one, access to emergency medicine during a storm, spandex, big hair. Shall I go on? This is a movie that knows it is cheesy, and embraces it We never really understand why Jimmy leaves the family for a time. Although we suspect drug use and perhaps some other behaviors it's never really clear as to why he leaves home. The musical duets and solos really help us understand the characters. My favorite line in the movie remains when Jimmy sings Sailing on: There is a distant lamp, that lights the way for me, I hope they hold it high so I can see. If you hold this movie high, it will be a lamp for your entertainment as well. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mormonnewsroundup/support

Welcome brothers and sisters to Mormon Movie Reviews: Where LDS movie lovers belong! Film Summary In Palmyra, New York in 1820, 14 year-old Joseph Smith Jr. wonders what church to join. He feels that none of the local religions are true and wants a divine answer. One spring morning, he goes out to pray in a grove near his home and starts to pray. He feels an evil spirit trying to prevent him from supplication. But he is freed from this malevolent presence by the most glorious light accompanied by two personages: Heavenly Father and his Son Jesus Christ. Jesus tells Joseph to not join any of the churches because they were all wrong. Movie Summary In 1881 David Whitmer seeks the signature of Gen. Alexander W. Doniphan on an affidavit attesting to his honesty and integrity, with plans to have it published in the local paper in Richmond Missouri with a statement refuting that he had denied his witness that an angel had shown him the gold plates from which the Book of Mormon was translated. Whitmer recalls the translation of the book in 1829 while Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery stayed at the Whitmer family home in Fayette, New York. After praying together, an angel shows them the plates. All three are later excommunicated from the church, but as Whitmer relates, Oliver Cowdery and Martin Harris testified to the end of their lives to the truthfulness of what they witnessed (dying in 1850 and 1875 respectively and after re-joining the church). Doniphan, a lawyer, signs the document and says that he would hate to argue in court against such strong evidence. This week's guest is Deanna Barillari, who is a dear friend and also a great mentor to Jessica Kantor's son. Deanna is my first guest that doesn't have children of her own but is very important in other children's lives. It took me two years to have my son. And there was a big chance that I wasn't going to have one, and I still wanted to make an impact on the next generation the best way that I knew how. I definitely don't want this to feel like a club childless people are not a part of because every action we do affects the next generation. Deanna Barillari has fifteen years of development and production experience across film and television based in LA and NY, with a passion for stories and those who tell them. Most recently, Deanna produced Chelsea Peretti's upcoming directorial debut, FIRST TIME FEMALE DIRECTOR, for FOX alongside Amy Poehler and her Paper Kite Productions. Deanna is a Sundance Creative Producing, Catalyst, Film Independent Project Involve, and IFP Cannes Producing Fellow. Feature credits include IFC's MONDAY by Argyris Papadimitropolous starring Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough (Tribeca 2020, TIFF 2020), Sony's LONG WEEKEND by Steve Basilone starring Finn Wittrock and Zoe Chao, and multiple music videos for acclaimed filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson. We are going to highlight two products on the list, one is unobtainium and the other a mere mortal can buy today. The rest of the items on the list are things that most people can buy and a few that we dream of buying. Please check it out, it's linked in the show notes. Unobtainium DALI KORE Loudspeaker Taking a step up into the rarified air of high-end audiophile speakers, the Danish company DALI applied its impressive R&D resources to the development of its $110,000 Kore loudspeakers. Emphasizing the company's fundamental audio philosophies and a return to its Danish roots through the use of Danish labor and raw materials, the KORE performs at extremely high levels. The 88dB, 4-ohm speaker delivers a frequency response of 26Hz to 34kHz and the statuesque speakers nicely complement a range of home designs and amplifiers to deliver lots of musical fun. By the way, each speaker weighs 148Kg (not pounds!!!). In pounds that's 325!!! I thought this was funny! From the user's manual: Disposal - If you want to dispose of your DALI KORE speakers, don't mix them with your general household waste. In accordance with EU legislation, a separate collection system for used electronic products enables private households in EU member states, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Norway to return used electronic products free of charge to designated collection facilities or to a retailer (if you purchase a similar replacement product). If you reside in a country not mentioned above, please contact your local authorities to determine the correct method of disposal and prevent any potential negative effects on the environment and human health For Mortals Epson Pro Cinema LS12000 4K PRO-UHD Laser Projector If the projector category had a pound-for-pound ranking like the UFC, the leader of the pack would be Epson's LS12000 laser projector. The 2,700-lumen LS12000 features the company's 4K PRO-UHD pixel shifting technology, along with its 32-bit ZX Picture Processor and laser light engine that delivers up to 20,000 of lamp life. The LS12000 produces nice levels of image brightness, color performance and image clarity. You can find these online for $5000. Projector Central rates this projector Performance 5 Stars, Features 4 ½ Stars, Ease of Use 4 ½ Stars, and Value 5 Stars. Gift Buying Guide We usually do a buying guide this time of year but you can sum it up like this. Go to Costco and buy an OLED or QLED TV by either Samsing, Sony or LG. And if you are budget conscious take a look at Vizio or TCL. Yes that is an oversimplification but this year we wanted to help you find something that the music, movie or smarthome lover will be thrilled to unwrap. So without further ado, here is our 2022 gift giving guide for Audiophiles, Movie Lovers and Smarthome Owners. Custom Acoustic Panels ($100 24”X24”X1”) - Get better sound while adding a nice visual element to your theater with acoustic panels. Movie Logbook Notebook $26 - Sure you can set up a spreadsheet with this information but where's the fun in that! Keep this log book in your theater and keep a diary of what you watch and who you watched it with. Home Automation Starter Kit ($200) - There are so many starter kits out there but for this list we decided on simple lighting system to dip your toes in the automation arena. We also chose the philips hue lights because they are compatible with everything and will support matter soon. Start with one room and work your way up to your entire house. Hubitat Elevation ($99.95) - For that someone who is a little more technical and does not want to be beholden to a cloud system for their home automation, this gift is ideal! By combining the advantages of local automation processing with cloud IoT connectivity, Hubitat's innovative Hubitat Elevation hub ensures personal data privacy and is more reliable and responsive than competitive cloud-based solutions. Hubitat Elevation is compatible with popular home automation devices, comes with a variety of built-in apps, and has an active user community to share ideas, insights and solutions. Smart locks - There are plenty of smart locks out there to choose from. Last week we had a listener write in about his Level Invisible Lock. They range in price from $199 up to $399 depending on style and lock mechanism. The best thing about these locks are that they don't need to change the style and look of the original lock. There are models by Schlage and Kwikset as well. But for these you really need to know the style and look of the lock you are replacing.
