On this week's episode of The Audit, Dave, Josh and their guest Jared Yates Sexton, explore PragerU's treatment of the founding fathers. From George Washington's wealth and questionable actions to PragerU's obsession with the founding fathers' heights, they unpack the mythologies and oversimplifications that the American Right invests in these historical figures. Jared Yates Sexton is author of The Midnight Kingdom: A History of Power, Paranoia, and the Coming Crisis and co-host of the Muckrake Podcast. He challenges the traditional narratives we've been told about Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and James Madison, including their involvement with slavery and underlying concern with maintaining the power of the wealthy elite. In his latest book, The Midnight Kingdom: A History Of Power, Paranoia, and The Coming Crisis, Jared Yates Sexton traces back a long history of conspiracies that have fueled authoritarianism, right-wing extremism, and led to several crises. It's in examining this history, Sexton argues, that we can best understand the current moment we're living in and how to avoid greater damages from the major issues we face to today - from the climate crisis to gun violence to wealth inequality and more. Will Ron DeSantis be as popular among the rest of the country as he is in Florida? Charlie Sykes, editor at large at The Bulwark, thinks not. But that isn't stopping the governor for going for it anyway, it being the 2024 presidency. He tells New Abnormal co-host Andy Levy why in this episode, including a few things that he believes DeSantis is banking on to win. (And why this won't work). Also in this episode: Jared Yates Sexton, host of The Muckrake Podcast and author of The Midnight Kingdom, has proof that Trump's religious pandering will lead to violence and tells co-host Danielle Moodie why liberal white Democrats in media are embarrassed of Trump, but just won't quit him. Plus! Andy and Danielle reflect on Trump's rally in Waco, and how Trump has gone full “vengeful” old testament. They also discuss the state state of the country after the latest school shooting in Nashville and reminisce on the very recent time Republicans swapped the American flag pins for ones of AR-15s. Thursday, January 26th, 2022 Jared Yates Sexton is a self-described Hoosier, a Political Analyst, and host of the Muckrake Podcast. His latest book is The Midnight Kingdom: A History of Power, Paranoia, and the Coming Crisis. We discuss our current era of neo-liberalism and what may be in store in the future. One of the most dangerous things that Reagan and Thatcher did on behalf of neoliberalism was convince people that government is impotent. This has eaten away at the authority of the state and reduced confidence in government regulation. Further, neoliberalism has reduced citizens into consumers who are left talking about consumer preferences as opposed to real politics. Jared predicts that the end of neoliberalism is nigh. This week, we take another dive into the fever swamps! First up, Muckrake Podcast co-host Jared Yates Sexton joins us to talk about Tucker Carlson's bizarre new obsession with America's entirely imaginary "masculinity crisis." Sexton warns that while Carlson's new program, The End of Men, is easy to mock--and indeed, was designed to earn liberal derision--it fits into a long historical pattern of right-wing movements capitalizing on male insecurity to recruit new members and prepare them to commit violence against their perceived enemies. Then Shauna Siggelkow, Define American's director of digital storytelling, shares a new report she and her colleagues authored that exposes the network of xenophobic Youtube channels that promote dangerous conspiracy theories about immigrants with their wide reach--and tells us how pro-immigrant advocates should learn from and adapt to their strategies. Jared Yates Sexton, the co-host of the Muckrake Podcast, is back! This time we are taking a super deep dive into his excellent and thought-provoking book American Rule: How a Nation Conquered the World but Failed its People. As always, Jared is a profoundly deep thinker and communicator--and in this case, we will look at some of the defining myths and "noble lies" that have sustained a particular version of American history from even before its founding as a nation. Understanding this paradigm will, I believe, help you to make sense of not just current events, but also American history also. Support the Work of MindShift Podcast on Patreon! In this special bonus episode, I'm chatting with Jared Yates Sexton, who is the co-host of the Muckrake Podcast along with Nick Hauselman. An associate professor at Georgia Southern University, Jared is also the author of the 2020 book American Rule: How a Nation Conquered the World but Failed Its People. As both an author and political analyst, Jared is perfectly positioned to comment on the developments within Trumpism currently, but also to discuss the historic elements that have led us to where we're at today...with a strongman president, Christian nationalism, American exceptionalism, and the cult of Trumpism that is based on conspiracy theories. For the last Muckrake Podcast of 2019, analyst Jared Yates Sexton holds down the fort, breaks down the impeachment of Donald Trump, the growing schism in the white evangelical community, and the hopes and fears of a new year.
The Muckrake Podcast gets off to a rolling start as political analysts Jared Yates Sexton and Nick Hauselman discuss the madness of the Republican Party, misinformation campaigns, manufactured conspiracy theories, and the fact that American politics aren't quite what they seem.
