It's World Piano Day! I've made several mixes over the years for Piano Day and each time I wonder if I'll find enough tracks for an interesting mix. And every year it comes together and surprises me with how much I like the finished set. This mix starts with a tune everyone should be familiar with - Eno's Music For Airports 1/2. This recording is by Bruce Brubaker from his fine EP - Eno Piano 2. To make things interesting I played two tracks from it simultaneously and I think it worked pretty well. While collecting tracks for the mix I was happy to find a piano album from Daniel Lanois. It's from 2022 and I had no idea it existed. I'm a big fan of the Necks so I was also excited to use one of their tracks for the first time. At least I think I've never used their music in a mix before. In September of 1978 former Roxy Musician turned sound sculptor, Brian Eno, released his 6th studio album. Before the advent of the Walkman when one traveled by plane, one was left to the devices of the airport's music overlords; and that made Brian Eno mad. So mad, infact, that he spearheaded the advent of ambient music. Let's talk Brian Eno, Ambient 1 Music for Airports!
Soft, soothing, and understated as a rule, ambient music may seem the least weird of all musical genres. Not so, say JF and Phil, who devote this episode to Brian Eno's Music for Airports, the 1978 album in whose liner notes the term "ambient music" first appeared. In this conversation, your hosts explore the aesthetic, metaphysical, and political implications of a kind of music designed to interact with the listener -- and the listener's environment -- below the threshold of ordinary, directed awareness. Eno and Peter Schmidt's famous Oblique Strategies, a deck of cards designed to heighten and deepen creativity, lends divinatory support to the endeavor. Sean and Neale are joined by George Ford, creator of the immensely popular Fireplace For Your Home series on Netflix which was the no.3 most popular video on Netflix last Christmas. Andy Kadin is the founder, owner, and head baker at Bub and Grandma's, a wholesale bakery that provides loaves to some of L.A.'s best restaurants, including Osteria Mozza, Petit Trois, Kismet, and Sqirl. After 10 years of writing for TV and advertising in Los Angeles, Kadin decided it was time for a career change. Being from New Jersey, he always had a deep love for sandwiches -- so much so that his nickname became ‘Lunch' at a previous job...so while dreaming of someday opening a sandwich shop in LA, he decided that he first needed to learn how to bake bread. He eventuatly commited himself to baking loaves every day in his home kitchen, giving them away to friends, and one such loaf got into the hands of Scott Zwiezen of Dune, home to some of LA's best falafel and other Mediterranean bites. Zwiezen was so impressed that he convinced Kadin to supply Dune with their daily ciabatta, essentially turned his home kitchen into a commercial kitchen for the six months that would follow (something he would not recommend doing ever again, by the way). Now baking in a warehouse east of downtown LA with 12 bakers by his side, Kadin and his team produce more than 600 loaves a day, making Bub and Grandma's one of the best premium small batch wholesale bakeries in the city. In his 1978 album Music for Airports Brian Eno created a new genre of music he named 'ambient music'. The album was designed to ease the tedium of waiting in airports, but ambient music, which Eno said was 'as ignorable as it is interesting', had an influence way beyond that. Ivan Hewett looks into the genesis and subsequent history of ambient music, and explains why Eno's description is not as self-contradictory as it appears to be.The story of new music is peppered with events that have altered the course of musical history. For our New Year New Music season, we asked five Radio 3 presenters to each tell the story of one of these "seismic moments". From silence and ambient sounds to riot and revolution, these intriguing events have, in different ways, changed the progress of sound and culture - or, as one of our five suggests, have they?Written and read by Ivan Hewett. Produced by Elizabeth Allard.
