Our un-official Official Sports Business Expert Brian Cooper is on the show today. A man who has had many fingers in many different pies over his career, we start with his role as Chairman of Canada Basketball. With Zach Edey being drafted to the Memphis Grizzlies 9th overall last night the question is now - Will he play for Canada at the Olympics? With inside knowledge on the matter, Brian gives Bob and John his opinion, expressing his thoughts as to why having the 7'4” Rookie Centre could help the team in Paris. The three spend a bit more time on Canada Basketball before the break as Bob and John get caught up to speed with the teams selection process leading up to the games along with developments from the women's side of things as well as Canada's 3x3 teams. After the break, focus shifts to the business side of sports. After learning about the increase in American viewership for the Stanley Cup Final, the three get into where the league is trending when it comes to streaming and sponsorships as they try to anticipate what direction sports, sponsorship and viewership is going in for the future.
We've had a lot of impressive guests on the podcast, many who have overcome some real challenges in their lives to build something great, but today's guest has an especially impressive story. Dr. Magie Cook began her life with 68 brothers and sisters in an orphanage in Mexico. Battling abuse, hunger, and poverty, during her high school years she earned a spot on the Mexican Women's National Basketball team, but broke her collarbone before she could fully commit. Despite the injury, the University of Charleston in West Virginia recruited her to their basketball program, and Magie was able to come to the United States. After graduating, Magie struggled to find a job, and slept out of her car until the engine exploded. Staff from the University Charleston vouched for her to stay on campus until she could get back on her feet, which came in the most unlikely of forms: a salsa making competition. Fast forward a decade, and Maggie's Salsa was sold to Campbell's Soup for $213 million. On top of that, Magie helped rescue dozens of childrens from the grasp of the Mexican cartels, became a board member at the University of Charleston with an honorary Doctorate in Laws in 2022, and so, so, much more. We caught up with Magie to talk with her about resiliency, team building, and how to be a leader that can inspire a team to go the extra mile. This is an inspiring episode you're not going to want to miss, so with that…let's bring it in!

One of Canada's foremost sports sponsorship experts with over 25 years in the industry, Brian Cooper joins the show to talk to Bob and John. The three start with the NBA's underwhelming attempt at an all-star weekend and use that to kick-start a conversation on All-Star Games in professional sports in general as the three try and decide whether these events should be a thing of the past. Given the fact that Brian serves as a board member of Canada Basketball, Bob and John make sure to spend some time on that swell, with both of Canada's Men's and women's teams set to compete for a medal at this summer's Olympic Games in Paris.
Former Seton Hall University and Puerto Rican National BasketballTeam member Dan Dunne joins SportsJam with Doug Doyle
Brian was paralyzed from the waste down at 16 years old after a car crash but didn't let this hold him back. He went on to become a 3x NCAA wheelchair basketball champion before eventually spending time at the London School of Economics. Brian is now the Founder and CEO of Off the Chain Capital, an alternative investment fund, as well as an angel investor in many notable companies including Coinbase.
