How are you doing? No, really, how are you doing? Guest Chris Newbold is not only the COO of ALPS Insurance – a leader in malpractice insurance for solo and small legal practices – he's also a recognized driver in the nationwide movement to ensure well-being in the legal profession. Over the past decade, there's been a focus on mental health, stress, and substance abuse in the profession. Meeting deadlines, satisfying clients, and the sometimes-confrontational nature of the job can take a toll, especially on lawyers in small practices or rural area where support can be lacking. Newbold shares insights from ALPS' recent report, “The State of the Solo: Positive Trends in Solo Attorney Well-Being,” which he helped deliver. The study made a special effort to include small and rural practices. A healthy lawyer is a good lawyer, Newbold says. Taking care of yourself helps you better serve your clients. Questions or ideas about solo and small practices? Drop us a line at NewSolo@legaltalknetwork.com Topics: Attorneys in solo or small firms are uniquely susceptible to the effects of stress. It's a hard job. But the right tech, paired with a mindful approach and managed workload, can reduce that stress. Taking care of yourself ultimately benefits your clients. Practicing in a solo or small firm or in rural areas can have its benefits, and surveys show those attorneys are finding job satisfaction and taking time off when needed. But there are also unique stresses and the potential to feel alone or overburdened. Workload and cash flow are among the biggest stressors facing attorneys. Stress can lead to mistakes (and malpractice), so be mindful of where you are and how much you can handle. If you own your own practice, don't let your practice own you. This iteration of the Masters of Drawing podcast was very interesting because I interviewed all of these artists, one after another, in a single day. Featuring Francis Livingston, Jill Carver, Dennis Ziemienski, Greg Newbold, Roseta Santiago, and Jordan K. Walker. You see, I was having a show that focused on drawing and had invited 47 artists for what I called "Masters of Drawing." These individuals are who I consider to be the very best in that field. They're all artists that primarily do paintings, but I wanted to really focus on that basic structure of most fine art, which is drawing. It's the thing that you do when you're a kid regardless of whether you're an artist or not, when you're three and you first get a crayon or a pencil. These individuals not only got that crayon and pencil, but they kept using it and using it. If you watch this podcast on YouTube, which I recommend, you can literally see them talking about drawing, speaking with their hands as if a pencil or pen was in their hands. It's really fascinating to watch because you can see each of these people's minds just go to that moment in time.So I hope you enjoy the third and final Masters of Drawing group podcast. This is episode 335 of Art Dealer Diaries hosted by Dr. Mark Sublette.

In this 253rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we follow the science to fewer cow farts. Bovear, an FDA approved product that is fed to cattle to reduce their production of methane, is the result of yet more reductionist, metric-heavy research that conflates complex systems with complicated ones. Bill Gates approves, though, so what could go wrong? We discuss ruminant biology, the actual Carbon impact of grazing cattle, and some other great new products from the makers of Bovear, including “the world's first-ever flavor created by artificial intelligence.” Then: why is the BBC's disinformation wing concerned about what Bret said on Diary of a CEO? What happened to journalism? Finally: it's Thanksgiving tomorrow. When the internet came along, many industries changed forever, and one of them was the auction business. Remember how exciting eBay was when everything was up for bid? Traditional auction houses had to move quickly to adapt, and the opportunities of moving from a local to a regional or national or international market through the internet were immense. One auction firm which has made a wildly successful transition is Leland Little in Hillsborough NC, and we'll talk inside their Modernist warehouse with Modernist director Luke Newbold. Later, it's architect, professor, attorney, and former first lady of Hartford CT, Sara Bronin, chair of the US Advisory Council for Historic Preservation, plus musical guest Roslyn Kind.

This journal club episode comes to you from the 2024 Tri-State Dairy Nutrition Conference. The paper is “Methane in the context of circular dairy farming” from the conference proceedings. What is circular dairy farming? The concept is that instead of extracting or using natural resources and then discarding the wastes in a linear kind of fashion, economies should try to be increasingly circular. This would include the concepts of reusing, recycling, upgrading, upcycling, etc. Traditionally, the focus on methane was about the inefficiency and leakage of energy and finding a way to minimize that from the perspective of energetic efficiency and productivity. More recently, the focus on decreasing methane has been the environment. (3:19)Dr. Newbold talks about the trade-off between circularity and methane. High fiber diets produce more methane than high starch diets. Adding fat to diets can also decrease methane production. However, starch and fat are human edible so if we leave starch and fat in feeds to decrease methane in dairy cattle, that leaves less starch and fat for human consumption. The concept of “local” also plays into circularity, whether that be feed production or milk processing. (7:01)What are the metrics of circularity? Two approaches to this present in the literature. The first is human edible efficiency: how much human edible food are we producing? In a dairy setting, the measurement would be how much human edible food are we putting into the cow compared to the amount of human edible food coming out of the system? The second metric is the alternatives for land use. (10:45)What is the best way to express methane production? Dr. Newbold shares three, and they are generally used in different contexts. First is methane production, usually presented as grams per cow per day. This is an easily scalable measurement, but may not be the best or easiest way to manage interventions on-farm. The second common metric is methane yield which is generally expressed as grams per kilogram of dry matter intake. Lastly, methane emissions intensity is grams of methane per kilogram of milk. (12:26)When considering the human edibility equation, the denominator consists of the human edible content of the feed. In principle, depending on how hard you worked and how much money you spent, you could extract some of the starch, fat, and protein and use it for human food. However, there's no consensus in the literature about this kind of edibility coefficient. In other words, what proportion of the protein in soybean meal or the proportion of starch that's left in wheat middlings or distillers grains is human edible? Greater consensus about what is and what is not human edible would actually be quite useful in allowing for better and more consistent calculations. (18:29)Dr. Newbold gives examples of relative efficiency comparing U.S. dairy production, a grass-based system, and a tropical grass based system. Each of these have a different human edible efficiency and a different amount of methane produced. (19:59)When it comes to lowering the environmental impact of milk production, don't focus on one metric in isolation of the rest of them. If you're setting off in a particular direction, whether that's trying to drive methane down or milk production up, think about the potential trade offs and unforeseen consequences. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #197 Erin Mihalik Throom Targets, CEO At the Great American Outdoor Show in 2022, I got to meet Erin. I was there with John Petrolino and we were in search of Tony Simon. Well, we were pretending we didn't see Tony while he was behind us and we were talking smack about him. Erin wasn't sure what we were up to, but she just went with it. That's the kind of fun spirited person she is. We saw her again at GAOS in 2023 and she wanted to be on the show as things have been growing at Throom over the last year and she has lots to talk about! She starts us off with some lofty goals for the show. She wanted to see a bear. We did run into a pig (cop). Hehe! We were in the way northern part of New Jersey, Sussex Country, and drove into New York state for about a ½ mile, maybe less. I was honored to hear that she has watched several shows and knew the format well. She tracked out a path for us to drive and didn't want to get lost. Part of the route took us over the Appalachian Trail. We do talk about some of the ridiculousness of the New Jersey gun laws, hollow point ammo, and jug handles. She also tells us the difference between living in central New Jersey, where gun owners stay in the closet versus northern New Jersey where it's a bit more conservative and people are gun owners and not hiding it. She used to say she was in manufacturing but can now say she's with a company that makes targets. Getting a degree in public relations and psychology, she noticed that her family were great engineers but not great marketers or communicating with people. She grew up in manufacturing with the rest of the family. Erin's grandfather started an engineering business in the 1970's and her dad and uncle grew up in the business. They started a side hustle in 1995 called Newbold Targets, which was the first self healing, reactive, ricochet free targets. The only benefit she had is that she had targets to shoot. Throom is a small family owned and run business. This year, Erin is the CEO. Her previous titles were Managing Director and Director of Sales before that. I don't want to say that titles aren't important, but they do have someone who manages the dummy rounds they make. He's the Dummy Director. After working for a big car company, Erin came back to the family business in 2013. She realized that they had a brand image issue and people were mistaking Newbold for other brands of targets. She's got a great story about someone coming up to them at SHOT show and telling them their targets are junk. But they realized that they were talking about a different self healing target that didn't heal so well. This is when the marketing stepped in and made a change in the color and packaging. Throom was rebranding before the lockdowns of 2020. There were big plans for SHOT 2021, which didn't happen. So they had started selling via the big online company. And sales took off! People were stuck at home, buying online, and shooting in the back yards. (Not in the Garden State, of course!) Neighbors weren't complaining because there wasn't noise from the Throom targets. More and more people started buying them. The exciting news is that Throom is now in lots of new stores, the big box stores, the small mom & pop stores, and even some of the online suppliers, too. New to the product line is a remote target Favorite quotes: “My husband says ‘Erin, we're in Sussex County now. You can tell people what you do.” “I am the CEO this year.” “We're just always having fun. We're lucky we all get to work together. Most of us are family. And the people who aren't technically family, we consider family.” “This industry, they respect people that make things in the US” Throom Targets Website https://throomtargets.com/ Throom Targets Facebook https://www.facebook.com/throomtargets Throom Targets YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@throom6307 Throom Targets Instagram https://www.instagram.com/throomtargets/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. A former beauty queen's life dramatically transformed from the pageant stage to the courtroom with the latest revelations of her involvement in a nefarious murder plot that rocked the serene islands of the Bahamas. Lindsay Shiver, the former Miss Houston County and second runner-up in the National Peanut Festival pageant, as reported by WDHN-TV, was arrested along with two co-conspirators, Terrance Bethel and Faron Newbold, on charges of conspiracy to commit murder. At the heart of this scandal is an alleged illicit affair and an intricate murder plot aimed at her husband, Robert Shiver, a one-time Atlanta Falcons player and prominent local figure. According to the Bahamas Court News, the three were taken into custody in late July following an investigation into a separate incident at a local bar in Guana Cay. The investigators stumbled upon a trove of damning evidence in the form of WhatsApp messages exchanged between the trio that reportedly outlined their meticulously planned attempt to murder Robert Shiver. Bethel, 28, is reported to be Lindsay's lover, further complicating the narrative. The police report, referenced by the Thomasville Times-Enterprise, states that on July 16, 2023, the threesome "while being together did, with a common purpose agree to commit an offense, namely the murder of [Robert] Shiver." This damning evidence was unearthed during the investigation and has since cast a dark cloud over the usually peaceful islands of Abaco. Lindsay and Robert Shiver owned a home in the Bahamas, a locale in which she allegedly began her extra-marital affair with Bethel. Robert Shiver, on becoming aware of this betrayal, promptly filed for divorce. In his filings, which were reported by CNN, he cited his wife's "adulterous conduct" as the main reason for their marital breakdown. Lindsay, in her retort, claimed that she had "incurred debt beyond her means to pay" and sought financial assistance from her husband. In a dramatic turn of events, the former beauty queen and her alleged accomplices were granted bail. Lindsay Shiver's bail was set at a hefty $100,000, while Bethel and Newbold's bail amounted to $20,000 each. Intriguingly, it was Robert Shiver who came forward to bail the three suspects out of jail on August 1, as reported by Bahamas Court News. After their release, stringent measures have been implemented to ensure the three suspects remain within the law's reach. Lindsay Shiver has been fitted with an ankle monitor and ordered to stay within the boundaries of the Bahamas until her next court appearance, slated for October 5. Bethel and Newbold have also been fitted with tracking devices and are required to report to Marsh Harbour Police on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays before 6 p.m., ensuring a close watch is kept on their movements. Lindsay Shiver, who once held the title of Miss Houston County in 2005, now finds herself embroiled in a scandal that has marred her reputation. In contrast, her estranged husband, Robert Shiver, a former Auburn University football player who also spent a brief period on the Atlanta Falcons roster, has reportedly returned to his home in Thomasville. As this sensational case unfolds, the Bahamas, often a haven of tranquility and idyllic beauty, has been thrust into the spotlight for a scandal that reads like a crime thriller. The truth behind these allegations will unravel in the coming months. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
