How allyship is always a verb and allies do more with effective accountability with Teagan Robinson-Bell Today we have a returning guest on the show because she's just brilliant and I could talk to her all day about DEI, gender equity and inclusive cultures because it's her speciality! Teagan Robinson Bell has been Anchor's Diversity and Inclusion Manager since 2021 and has been with the housing association for nearly 6 years. She has led Anchor's inclusion agenda that supports colleagues with their career goals and personal development whilst being their authentic selves and supports residents to live lives that allow them to thrive in later life. Her ethos is that everyone's voice should be heard and that cognitive diversity allows organisations to provide great places to work and provides the best outcomes for customers. On the show today we are focusing on the importance of male allyship - the actual behaviour and difference that men can make in the workplace and beyond. We chat about the things that can stop them doing more such as power imbalances in the workplace or this lack of self awareness about the privileges they hold. But ultimately if we can't focus on it being a moral obligation to challenge bias and discrimination - which we all hope would be the standard set, we can still link this to money and impacting the bottom line from a commercial point of view. Listen in as Teagan shares some great advice and tips on how to deal with banter and how we can make sure that there is accountability for all allies especially those in more leadership positions. Let us know what you think and what you will be doing about it! Why I am talking more about men for this years International Women's Day. In all transparency, last IWD I wasn't thrilled at the prospect of celebrating another day filled with purple balloons, cupcakes and being told to hug ourselves. The whole thing was starting to make me cringe. How will all this smash the patriarchy? Now this sounds crazy to you and me both because I know how important days like this are for raising awareness - thats the whole point of awareness days / weeks / months, but that's just the thing - has it lost it's way? For me its about reminding everyone why it's still important to work on gender equity because we are still not there yet and the recent and some that seem neverending events around the world where by women and children are the ones really feeling the dire and often demoralising consequences are enough to make anyone think why bother? However this is exactly why we need to. The time is NOW. There's a lot of despair in the world right now around women's rights and gender equity. I cannot believe what I am seeing.I feel like we are going backwards; although maybe this is what others want us to believe; in fact maybe it's just the opposite. This concerning pushback threatens bodily autonomy, sees increasing gender-based violence, and systemic barriers that hold women and marginalised communities back. So this moment is not just about defending progress; it's about driving change forward. And as change gains momentum so does pushback. And in Florence's words "It's always darkest before the dawn". And this is why I see the huge and powerful place for male allyship now more than ever. Those men that get it. Those men that can see the harmful impact that lack of inclusivity and equity has for women in the world. I have started sharing male allies when I see them over on my insta stories @nomorehiningco and saving them in a highlight in case you ever need a reminder that they are out there. Because that's the thing - No More Hiding isn't just about women being more visible, it's about everyone being more visible for the things that matter - speaking out and sharing their lived experiences and ideas about how we can be more inclusive and hear more perspectives around those decision making tables. Thats how we make a difference and thats how change happens So in this series we explore the crucial role male allies play in creating more equitable workplaces. We'll dive into why male allyship is essential—not just for women's career progression, but for building healthier, more successful organizations overall. When we talk about workplace gender equality, the focus often falls on policies and initiatives. But true change doesn't happen without action—and that's where male allies come in. In this series, we'll unpack what real allyship looks like, why it's not enough to just “support” women behind the scenes, and how visibility and advocacy from men can make all the difference. Throughout the series, we'll be joined by industry leaders, workplace culture experts, and professionals who have firsthand experience with allyship in action. We'll explore the challenges, the impact, and the simple yet powerful ways men can step up in their workplaces. From amplifying women's voices in meetings to actively advocating for equal opportunities, we'll break down what meaningful allyship looks like—and why it benefits everyone. I saw a quote that struck a chord with me from Lilly tomlin and she said “ I always wondered why somebody doesn't do something about that..theh I realised I was somebody” So, if you're ready to learn, challenge assumptions, and take action, you're in the right place. -------------- Book a chat with Gemma - This is the place to book a call to see how Gemma can help you or your company support female leaders to raise their profile, increase performance and visibility and build more allies. in this week's audio journal: uncovering is essential to becoming. i think for quite a while, being afraid of myself hindered me from evolving. i've reached a point where it has taken so much more energy to hide and wear a mask (with myself and the world) versus just accepting and embracing all parts of me that i once tucked so deeply with adamant care. breaking out of my shell and fully allowing myself to bloom has aligned me with not only my true self, higher self but also with humanity. in simpler words, life is just easier. more livable. more breathable because i don't have to pretend with myself or anyone else. i have bloomed. i have alchemized. and the evolution will continue because i'll never be afraid of myself again.
Sermon Summary:Shame drives us to hide. From the moment Adam and Eve felt shame in the garden and covered themselves with fig leaves, humanity has been stuck in this pattern of concealing our true selves. We begin with a confession – whether we realize it or not, we're all hiding something. The "Unstuck" series explores how the 12 steps of AA correspond with Jesus' teachings. While the first four steps help us acknowledge our powerlessness, recognize our need for God, surrender control, and take honest inventory of ourselves, it's the fifth step that often becomes the sticking point: "We admit to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs."This confession step is where transformation begins. James 5:16 tells us to "confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed." There's healing power in bringing our hidden struggles into the light with another person. When we try to manage shame alone, it only grows deeper. The distinction between guilt and shame is crucial: guilt says "I did something bad," while shame whispers "I am bad." Guilt can lead to positive change, but shame drives us further into hiding and isolation. What makes confession so powerful is that it shatters shame's greatest lie – that if people really knew us, they wouldn't love us. When someone hears our worst moments and still responds with love, shame loses its grip. The good news of the gospel is that God cancels our record of debt through Christ. We are fully known and still deeply loved. There should be nothing in our lives that someone doesn't know, because connection is the antidote to shame.Coming out from hiding means reclaiming what was stolen in the garden – living as we were always intended to: open, honest, known, and deeply loved.

#sexualabuse #healing #survivor #christianpodcast #TheCWSpod When does the hiding start? According to Catherine Cooper, author of It's Time Out for Hiding, the hiding starts when we protect the secret. Shame and fear DRIVE the hiding, but even with the secret hidden, something inside of you will feel broken until you release. This is what happened with Catherine. For years she hid her childhood sexual abuse. Though she was saved, she knew something was wrong because she had mood swings. She wanted God to fix it, and He did. When she attended a T.D. Jakes Conference, she released it all, and the chains of shame and fear broke. Learn more about her story and how you can release too.

Despite the miraculous story of the Red Sea crossing and its unique prominence in the story of Israel, it is one we are asked to live out repeatedly. This familiar and foundational story is both a singular event in the Bible but also prefigures the ongoing power of the crucified and risen Christ. By grace, God's mighty hand opened a path for the fleeing Israelites, it opened a tomb for Jesus, and it opens still the way of freedom and abundant life to all who believe in him.
How Neurodiversity plays an important role at work and gives companies the edge As part of our inclusion mini series I have an incredible woman on the show today - Laura or Loz Shallcross is on a mission for more people to understand what it means to be Neurodiverse and to make workplaces more accessible. She is a Support Team Supervisor at WDH and has worked there since 2008. Loz has both Tourette Syndrome and ADHD and I have invited her to talk and educate me and you on what life's like and how this can impact career progression and how women especially feel about themselves. She has taught me so much in this single conversation that I know she will be going on to do so much more to raise the awareness of neurodiversity so that everyone can be treated with the understanding and respect. We talk tics, language, misdiagnosis, misunderstanding and how workplaces can do so much more to make sure that all their employees feel included and are using their strengths to their advantage! Employers are missing a trick and missing out on having the best people in their teams! Thank you Laura for such an open and honest conversation - you rock! Happy Thursday Worthiness Warriors! Hello from Bandon, Oregon. For the past year my whole mantra has been to trust the nudge. The nudge, it feels expansive and like joy for a split second before the fear comes in. Trusting the nudge and yourself doesn't mean that it's easy or logical, because often it doesn't. But, what is on the other side of trust is beyond your wildest dreams. I'd recently experienced a failure, and I wanted to hide. I told myself that if I experienced failure again I wouldn't hide, I would share it. And then I experienced great success, and I wanted to hide. I had to think about what that meant. Instead of it being about the outcome, it was about the weight I put on myself and the situation to come out a certain way. The expectations we have of ourselves and what is supposed to happen adds pressure. It's time to release it. If you want to work with me 1-on-1 with me click here. Join me at the next retreat on the Oregan Coast in May!! Thank you, and have a beautiful rest of your day. I'll see you next week.

How often does the mask we wear–at work, with our friends, even our loved ones–match what's going on underneath? The face we show to the world isn't necessarily the face we show ourselves. There's often a disconnect between the way we see ourselves and the way we present ourselves to the world. The more we aim to please, rise or shrink to fit given situations and expectations, the more we lose sight of who we are. But who is that, really? It's time to pull down the masks, challenge what's real and what's illusion, and stop hiding. It's vulnerability time. On today's episode, I'm honored to welcome guests Ashanti Branch and Aaron Kahlow. The origins of Ashanti's work were featured in the documentary, “The Mask You Live In,” which looks at how traditional notions of masculinity are affecting our young men. Aaron is a social health and emotional wellbeing advocate and facilitator whose experience creating space for people to safely take down their masks makes him an incredible source of wisdom for today's topic. In This Episode (01:38) Learning to wear–and take down–masks from childhood (07:44) How Ashanti defines “mask” (13:12) Aaron's exhaustion from wearing masks (17:13) The concept of holding space (20:03) How Ashanti uses the idea of masks to help kids open up (25:50) Revealing what's behind Aaron's mask (30:45) Using our masks as a way to bottle up emotions (34:32) The importance of co-regulation and social connections (41:02) How we can create safe space (46:15) Helping young men learn trust (55:49) What it takes to trust (58:03) Skillful relationships—with others and yourself Notable Quotes “I was raised by a single mother in Oakland, California. I was supposed to know what it meant to be a man. Even though there was no man really helping me figure it out. And I think the story that I wanna connect to what you shared was I was told by my uncle, I was a man of the house. And I'm like, ‘Hey, I'm just seven. I just wanna play.' And that childhood got taken away really quickly. And so I began to have to learn quickly through a lot of pain, a lot of battles and fights that, who I am nurture-wise is not what my community accepted is what really means to be a man. And so I had to put on all these different masks… And I think that because of those early lessons of helping and nurturing and taking care of everybody made it really hard because I was in charge. I didn't get to go ask people for help. And so asking people for help is still hard for me to this day.” – Ashanti (08:15) “It's exhausting to be a leader. It's exhausting to be strong for the family. It's exhausting to play all these roles because at least for me, I'm not in harmony with the natural world… So every day is exhausting because there's a mask to protect myself so I can make it through the day. When I say that I can feel that in my eyes. And I know that's still true for me. As much as I work on that, like I'm still taking these masks off and wrestling 'em down every day. Like, no, you stay down there. I'm just gonna show up.” – Aaron (13:12) Our Guests Ashanti Branch is the founder and executive director of The Ever Forward Club, which he started in 2004 to provide underserved middle and high school boys with a safe community to build character and transform lives. Since then, The Ever Forward Club has become a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that serves both young men and women. It has helped 100% of its members graduate high school, and 93% of them have gone on to attend college. Aaron Kahlow is an emotional wellbeing advocate, facilitator and leader committed to helping people create more meaningful human connection in our lives through authentic community building, shared learning, healing and personal growth experiences.
