Thomas Nobbs's 20-year journey to a 2:09 marathon

For someone who has yet to reach his 27th birthday, Thomas Nobbs has already spent a lifetime in the world of competitive running. Since joining his first track club at age seven, the Vancouver native quickly found his stride, falling in love with the work harder/run faster equation that distance running offered. He also found his stride on the track and went on to assert himself as one of the country's top youth athletes, with a pair of national youth championship golds in the 3,000m and 2,000m steeplechase. But for someone who loved to work hard, the risks associated with a high-output approach began to grow, and Nobbs spent much of his late high school and early university careers sidelined with injuries, including multiple stress fractures. Nevertheless, the passion for running never faded, and after wrapping up a university career at UBC in 2022, Nobbs began exploring the world of longer distances on the road, a journey that eventually, and inevitably, took him to the marathon. Since debuting three years ago, the 26-year-old has steadily improved his time over 42.2 km, most recently with a breakout performance in March in Rockland State Park, NY, where he won the McKirdy Micro Marathon in 2:09:24. It was a three-minute personal best and made him the fourth fastest marathoner in Canadian history. After years climbing his way back through injury, the former youth champion finds himself once again among the best in the nation, and will make his Abbott World Marathon Major debut in October in Chicago, entering that field as the top-ranked Canadian. This week on The Shakeout Podcast, Tom joins the show to recap his breakout race, the big-mileage training that got him there, and what he's learned from the highs and lows of 20 years immersed in the world of competitive running. Tom Nobbs on Strides, Strength Training, and Building Toward Higher Marathon Mileage After Two 10Ks Canadian 2:09 marathoner Tom Nobbs discusses recent takeaways from conversations with Rory Linkletter and Jimmy, with a focus on frequent strides, sprinting, strength training, racing, and building toward a bigger marathon block. Matt and Tom discuss the value of polarizing training between controlled tempo work and true max-speed work, rather than turning every session into the same moderate effort. The conversation then moves into strength training. They debate where gym work fits for distance runners, how it may help reduce cramping for some athletes, and why it can also become unnecessary or costly for high-mileage runners if it takes away from recovery or running volume. Tom explains his own strength gaps and the importance of tailoring gym work to the athlete rather than forcing one approach on everyone. Tom also breaks down two recent 10K races: a 28:47 road 10K in windy conditions in Ottawa, and a delayed late-night track 10K in awkward conditions with limited access to the track beforehand. Matt and Tom discuss how racing time-of-day, warm-up routines, track access, spikes, and surface specificity can all affect performance. They also compare road and track racing, why both require adaptation, and how shorter races can sharpen the mental edge during a marathon build. Later, they cover coaching athletes who over-race, how different personality types respond to racing, and the balance between racing for fun, social connection, and long-term development. The final part of the episode shifts into Tom's next marathon block, including higher "super mileage," the trade-offs of extreme volume, tapering challenges, days off versus seven-day running, and examples of older or later-career runners still making major marathon improvements. Maybe more importantly, their products do what they say they're going to do. Listen to this feedback about Joint Health Plus! "My ankle and knee pain was completely gone in a week. Amazing!" - Kim "I thought I was on the verge of having to give up running due to severe hip pain and luckily discovered Previnex - complete game changer for me!" - Anna "I am so grateful for Joint Health Plus! As a certified fitness professional and still an extremely active, competitive amateur athlete, I was getting discouraged with an increase in pain simply kneeling down, or bending down to the floor and getting back up while assisting clients, or in my own training! Once deciding to give this product a try, I was floored when I finally noticed I was not bracing in anticipation of pain when I had to kneel down; not whincing in discomfort upon standing! Thank you, Prevenix!" - Jessica Joint Health Plus is so powerful because the main active ingredient is clinically proven to reduce joint pain, reduce joint stiffness, and improve joint flexibility in just 7-10 days. They're a "secret weapon" during rehab of many pro runners. Lever attaches to any treadmill and you hook into it like a harness. It effectively makes you lighter, allowing you to do more running with less risk. So maybe you want to build more mileage, or run hard workouts but you're hesitant because of injury concerns. The pro's have been using Lever for years, letting them get the advantage of more training with fewer injuries. I had the chance to go for a run using Lever and it was deceptively easy to set up and use. All of a sudden, I was running 7min mile pace with the heart rate of 8:30 pace. They then break down the Canadian performances in Boston, including Rory Linkletter's outstanding 2:06:04 PB, Ben Preisner running around 2:11 while managing injury issues, and Jacob Thompson breaking 2:10. Matt and Tom also debate whether fast Boston times should be treated as "true" PBs when conditions, tailwind, and course profile play such a major role. The conversation shifts into post-marathon recovery, including disrupted sleep, nervous system stress, and the importance of getting carbohydrates and protein in quickly after a race. Tom also shares his own recovery approach, including carbs, protein, creatine, and ketones. From there, Tom outlines his preparation for the Ottawa road 10K, where he is aiming to improve his 28:58 PB and push toward sub-28:30. He and Matt discuss high-volume double-threshold training, hill reps, long-run structure, time-based training versus mileage chasing, and why 10K speed can set the ceiling for marathon performance. Later in the episode, they talk about filming YouTube training content, using video as accountability, sponsorship considerations, and wider Boston takeaways including high carbohydrate intakes, half marathon fitness as a predictor, tailwind and air-resistance effects, and the role of supershoes on Boston's downhill sections. Tom explains why the performance was especially meaningful given the unusual lead-in - it was his fourth marathon in around two and a half years, his first back-to-back marathon build since the Marathon Project, and a winter training block completed almost entirely on the treadmill. Tom shares how that treadmill-heavy buildup created a lot of uncertainty around race-day pacing and fitness translation. Once the pacer stepped off early, he was left to run roughly 22 miles alone on a looped course with confusing lap splits, forcing him to rely heavily on feel and effort rather than clean external feedback. That ability to stay composed and trust the work became one of the defining parts of the race. The conversation then turns to Tom's progression from 2:15 to 2:12 to 2:09. Rather than simply piling on more mileage, he credits much of that jump to improved speed, better quality, and specific Canova-style sessions such as 12 x 1K plus 6 x 400, along with frequent strides and faster running around 5K to 3K pace. Matt and Tom discuss how those layers of speed have helped raise his ceiling while still supporting marathon performance. They also get into body weight, fuelling strategy, and how Tom thinks about food through a marathon build, as well as race shoes, including the Puma Fast-R 3. Tom speaks about coaching with Team Run Run, his philosophy around helping athletes improve, and the value of putting bold goals out publicly rather than hiding from them. Later in the episode, they touch on Connor Mantz dropping Boston, the pros and cons of pros racing too often, and Tom's own plans moving forward, which include returning to shorter races on the track and over 10K before deciding on a possible fall marathon. It is not easy starting your own financial advice firm, and it is not easy bringing two businesses together. Nathan Waldron and Ryan Nobbs have done both in the space of three years. Waldron launched Waldron and Co in 2021, to offer advice which covers a range of financial areas including retirement planning, protection, investments and estate planning. Nobbs launched RN Financial Planning, also in 2021. In October last year, the pair combined their two businesses to create Evergreen Financial Planning. “We spoke every day anyway,” says Nobbs. “We'd always bounce ideas off each other and talk through cases to make sure we weren't going crazy when something seemed a bit odd. “Someone said to us: ‘Well why haven't you [brought your businesses together yet?' And we though: ‘Good question, why haven't we done it?'” “It was one of those things that somebody says to you, and at the time you go: ‘Oh yeah',” says Waldron. “But later that evening I started thinking: ‘Actually, that's a really good idea.'” The pair puts their success down to the fact they have different interests and skills. Waldron has a knack for simplifying even the most convoluted financial concepts, making them accessible and relatable to everyone. On the flip side, Nobbs is a strategic mastermind, who excels at mapping out financial pathways tailored to individual needs. “It's not just about bringing two great businesses together,” says Waldron. “You have to have that synergy, but also be able to fill each other's voids. “Ryan's really focused on spreadsheets, figures and things like that. I do like numbers as well. Do you see what I mean? But that's Ryan's focus. “My strength is looking at how we can create more business, reach more clients and interact in different ways, marketing etc. “We have the same work ethic, but we're doing different things. So when you put that together, it fills everything. That's the real big secret to this.” The pair want Evergreen Financial Planning to “revolutionise” how clients experience finance and financial advice. The business takes a “holistic, client-centric approach” to uplift financial wellbeing across retirement, investment, insurance, and estate planning. They also want the business to be a place where new advisers can learn the profession. “We've already taken on two advisers, and they are new to advice.,” says Waldron. “What we want to do for them is create an atmosphere where they can ask, they can learn, they've got support from us all of the time, they've got support from M&G as well when needed. “We want to make that journey really easy for them.”

From there, he started Chipotle-backed Zero Acre Farms, which is a company that is designed to help eliminate seeds oils which currently make up 20% of the American calories. Zero Acre Oil uses a process of fermenting sugar cane to produce a cooking oil that is far healthier, more sustainable, and tastier than any other vegetable oil. It has a high level of heart-healthy mono unsaturated fats and a low level of inflammatory fats like omega-6 fats. On today's show, Chad and Kelley learn a lot about the detriment of inflammatory seed oils and why they need to be replaced for the sake of our health. Through this conversation you will hear insights on why seed oils are so harmful for our health and the types of diseases they can cause, how seed oils are problematic for the environment, the importance of cooking with high smoke point oils, and how eating these inflammatory seed oils can actually cause you to eat more food than you actually need. To connect with Kelley click HERETo connect with Jeff click HERETo connect with Zero Acre Farms click HERE

We've had so many discussions that's far about the importance of dietary fat for health and longevity. But to be clear, the type of fat we consume is of incredible importance. These days our diets seem to be loaded with vegetable oils and seed oils, and as we will learn, these are generally quite threatening to our health. In fact vegetable oils are only recently introduced into human nutrition with global production increasing 1600% since the early 1900s.   There is a strong correlation between the increase consumption of vegetable oils and seed the oils with the incidence of severe chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and even various neurological conditions.    Today we are going to explore a new type of oil called cultured oil, prepared by fermentation and subsequent filtration. Leading this industry is a company called Zero Acres Farms, and as such, I have reach doubt to its co-founder and CEO, Jeff Nobbs, to explore exactly what this company is doing as well as the health benefits of their product.   ====   TIMESTAMPS:  0:00 Intro 2:28 Realizing the Danger of Omega 6 10:10 Low Fat Diets 12:35 HNE 17:00 Inflammation & Lanolin Acid 20:38 Environmental Impact of Seed Oils 24:00 Saturated Fat 28:15 New Way to Produce Oils 33:36 What to Look for while buying 39:02 Conclusion   ====   Jeff Nobbs:    Jeff Nobbs is the co-founder and CEO of Zero Acre Farms, a food company replacing destructive vegetable oils with healthier, more sustainable oils and fats made by fermentation. Prior to Zero Acre Farms, Jeff also co-founded the fast casual restaurant chain Kitava, food security non-profit HelpKitchen, and rewards shopping platform Extrabux. On today's episode, Dr. Jaime interviews entrepreneur and possible robot, Jeff Nobbs.Jeff Nobbs is an entrepreneur (he likes being called that because it allows him to occasionally be unemployed while still sounding like he's on top of everything) and thinker (his wife calls him a robot programmed to act human, but he thinks “thinker” sounds more profound than “robot”, and the title allows him to lounge around doing nothing claiming to be “thinking”).Now it's 2022 and Jeff has decided, of all things, to enter the oil business. After realizing that nobody else was insane enough to try and replace one of the most consumed foods in the world, Jeff co-founded a new food startup called Zero Acre Farms with exactly that mission: to remove destructive vegetable oils from the food system.Jeff has realized that he gets very frustrated when there are very important problems that aren't being addressed or solved in the way that he thinks they should be. He usually underestimates the gravity and complexity of the problem, but decides to charge forward anyway and try to solve the problem himself with the naive optimism that he can save the world.Athletes in Motion: From Race to RecoveryWho's an athlete? Is the Future of Fat Fermented? Jeff Nobbs of Zero Acre Farms Is Betting on it

At age 18, Jeff Nobbs founded an ecommerce company, building it into a valuable enough startup that it was acquired in what Jeff calls a “life-changing” event. After then opening a restaurant that now has two locations in the Bay Area, Jeff decided that there'd be a third entrepreneurial act in his life, this time focused on fixing fat. What's wrong with fat today? Well, Jeff argues that the way we grow plants to make oils like palm, soy, coconut, canola, and more is just pretty taxing on the planet. It's often not that good for us, either. So instead of farming plants to extract the tiny amount of fat that's in them, why not just farm microbes that produce vast quantities of fat and save a lot of land in the process? It would be especially beneficial if these microbes were adroit at making monounsaturated fats, or the so-called “good fats” we associate with avocados, olives, and so on. It turns out that producing fat via microbial fermentation is pretty efficient. A life cycle analysis conducted by Jeff's new company, Zero Acre Farms, found that their fermentation process uses far fewer resources than farming soybeans, which are a pretty efficient plant. Founded in 2020, Zero Acre Farms now has three dozen employees and just closed a $37 million dollar financing round. Its first product, a cultured oil, is now available to purchase from their web site. I tried it in my own kitchen and can attest that indeed, the oil performed and tasted quite good. It's an impressive journey that Jeff's been on, and with tens of millions of dollars now at the mid-30s CEO's disposal, it's sure to be quite a ride as they scale up and see how many acres they can free up by switching the world to their lower-footprint fats. In this episode, Jeff recommends  Dale Carnegie's books Peter Drucker's books Think and Grow Rich Scaling Up High Growth Handbook   More about Jeff Nobbs Jeff Nobbs is the co-founder and CEO of Zero Acre Farms, a food company replacing destructive vegetable oils with healthier, more sustainable oils and fats made by fermentation. On today's episode we're talking about cooking oils. Thank you Craig Shapiro for the introduction to our guest today is Jeff Nobbs, who is the founder and CEO of Zero Acre Farms. Zero Acre Farms is on a mission to remove destructive vegetable oils from the food system. Zero Acre Farms is an oil that's instead made from fermentation. Some of the questions I ask him: When did you start to care about health and the science of nutrition? You've started quite a few businesses before and you've been very successful. When did you start thinking about alternatives to vegetable oil? What is the origin of vegetable oil? How did you land on microorganisms and fermentation? What were other processes you were considering? Can you walk us through the process? What's been the challenging part on the R&D side? How do you think about your competitive advantage? Why did you choose to raise $37 million? How were you able to raise it? What resonated with investors? What's the most expensive part to Zero Acre Farms? Have you seen tech investors shift away from investing in CPG or only in CPG where there isn't product innovation? How do you approach the price point? With innovation comes a premium. How do you think about premium pricing vs. maximum impact? There's kind of a bifurcation within better for you products – do you value products that are better for the planet or products that are better for your body, It's hard to create products that can fill both those requirements. How do you think about it since you've been an entrepreneur within health and wellness for a long time? What were some of your lessons learned since you started a CPG brand before and a restaurant before that has impacted how you think and operate Zero Acre Farms? What's the company you most admire (Craig Shapiro asked this question)? How do they impact you? What is the vision for Zero Acre Farms? What will be the most challenging to fulfill that vision? What's one book that has inspired you personally and one book that's inspired you professionally? The Three-Body Problem Think and Grow Rich The History of the World What's the biggest piece of advice to founders?

One of the fastest growing start-ups in Europe, Gorillas is a potential harbinger of broader shifts in the bike delivery sector and the gig economy. We look to have a deep dive into their business with one of their key UK Directors to find out why they are definitely one to watch. Founded in May 2020 and built on a promise to deliver groceries within 10 minutes to the consumer, Gorillas achieved the vaunted start-up "unicorn" status by reaching a $1 billion (€858 million) valuation after just nine months, the fastest ever German company to do so.   Launched in Berlin, Gorillas now operates in nearly 60 cities in 9 countries in Europe and North America.  Gorillas is currently https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-09-23/delivery-hero-is-said-to-invest-in-gorillas-at-3-billion-value (valued at $3 billion) (€2.5 billion), while competitor Flink, founded in Berlin in December 2020, is valued at $2.1 billion (€1.8 billion). Since launching, part of Gorillas' marketing efforts has been its focus on establishing better working conditions than rival delivery platforms. The biggest long-term question is whether the grocery delivery model was merely a pandemic-fuelled fad or if it represents concrete shifts in consumptive behaviour. According to the Gig Economy Project, the food delivery sector has doubled in size since the start of the pandemic. Huge investments in companies like Gorillas and Flink indicate investors have faith in the model, and it is thought that grocery delivery is here to stay. “In a sense, it's part of how capitalism is continuously inventing new needs and requirements. We didn't ever need to have our takeaways delivered to us did we?! We could have walked and picked them up. But now lots of people take it for granted that their takeaway will be delivered to them. Maybe it's the same for groceries. Let's see.” stated Max MacGillivray of Beanstalk. Join us as we go live with Matthew Nobbs - Commercial Director for Gorillas UK, to find out about their disruptive business model and how they could be the future for retail.

The market for digital collectibles is booming, but does it present a real opportunity for brands, or is it just a passing fad? When a shoe collaboration between design studio RTFKT and digital artist Fewocious netted around $3.1 million earlier this year, the fashion world sat up and paid attention. More than 600 pairs sold out in seven minutes. The shoes were issued as non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, unique digital assets authenticated by a digital ledger known as a blockchain. With appetites for unique virtual assets surging, more fashion companies are looking at how they can tap the market; even Rimowa is launching NFTs. But is this a long-term opportunity or just a passing fad? In the latest episode of The BoF Podcast, deputy editor Brian Baskin speaks with Benoit Pagotto, co-founder of RTFKT, Karinna Nobbs, co-CEO of NFT marketplace The Dematerialised, Amber Slooten, co-founder and creative director of digital fashion house The Fabricant and editorial associate M.C. Nanda about ways fashion can tap into the NFT gold rush. Virtual fashion isn’t just about gaming anymore, and that could open up a whole new marketplace for digital skins and on-trend avatars. “Within this new NFT space, people are starting to see the value of digital items,” said Slooten.”You’re able to sort of create that new, endless way of expressing yourself.” The fashion industry has yet to fully tap into the NFT opportunity, and doing so will mean becoming more open to collaborations. “Nobody [is] sharing anything with each other [in fashion] because they’re afraid it’s going to get stolen,” said Slooten. Proponents of NFTs say the recent boom is no flash in the pan, but a mark of a paradigm shift. “This is fundamentally going to change digital ownership, creative structures, the creative economy, how we view money even,” said Nobbs. “This is bigger than the Internet.” Related Articles: What the NFT Gold Rush Means for Fashion NFTs for Fashion: Fad or Opportunity? Arsenal and England football player, Jordan Nobbs joins Charlie and James to discuss the impact the menstrual cycle has on her training, performance and nutrition as well as her commentary on being a woman in a male-dominated sport. Historically, menstrual cycles and female athletes have been left at the bottom of the priority list amongst research labs and sports scientists.  It's a heavily male-dominated industry and overtime, this has led to studies being carried out on males and the results being applied to females, disregarding physical differences. Firstly, you'll hear Jordan Nobbs talk about how the industry can be improved, as well as how more research into periods heightening injury risk, could have prevented her from missing the world cup in 2019. Expert on menstrual cycles, Dr Kirsty Elliott-Sale, then joins to share her insights on how women must become a priority in research in order to ensure female athletes are no longer viewed as subordinate gender in sports science.   Follow us @scienceinsport on Instagram. Landscape of Migration: Mobility and Environmental Change on Bolivia's Tropical Frontier, 1952 to the Present (UNC Press, 2020), traces the entwined histories of Andean, Mennonite, and Okinawan migrants to Amazonian Bolivia during the twentieth century, exploring how each of these communities forged and contested the landscape of agrarian citizenship in the country. The lowlands around Santa Cruz became a focal point for high modernist development projects in Bolivia, and as Ben Nobbs-Thiessen argues, such a vision of development was appealing to a broad range of actors: both the left(ish) Revolutionary Nationalist Movement, in power from 1952-1964, as well as the (often) right wing military governments that succeeded it, were deeply concerned with developing Bolivia through colonization of of the lowlands. Starting in the 1970s, however, as the state started to pull back from the day to day operations of such projects, it opened up space for NGOs and what Nobbs-Thiessen calls, "faith-based development practitioners," many of whom were connected to settler projects. Nobbs-Thiessen shows how each of these different communities came together after World War II, and each, for a time, came to play an important role in the development of Santa Cruz and the lowlands as a regional powerhouse in Bolivia and the Amazon region. By situating Andean migrants and development practitioners alongside other subnational migratory communities, Nobbs-Thiessen offers an exciting contribution to Latin American Studies, Migration History, and Environmental History. Nobbs-Thiessen's wide-ranging work is attuned to the dynamics of both settler colonialism and internal colonialism as forms of migration, and contributes to a body of literature that refuses to provincialize Bolivian history. Several chapters would work well as standalone, teachable articles: The book begins with a chapter exploring the imagined frontier, through pamphlets and films and ends with the growth of the Mennonite-dominated soy industry in the transborder Amazonian region some have called the United Republic of Soybeans. Nobbs-Thiessen's Landscape of Migration offers important background for both the devastating wildfires of 2019 and the Santa Cruz-led uprising that overthrew president Evo Morales in the months that followed. Ben Nobbs-Thiessen is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Winnipeg. Elena McGrath is an Assistant Professor of History at Union College in Schenectady, NY.
