The ubiquitous bane of the gardener - Bindweed. There seem be at least 50 ways to fight your bindweed - pulling, snipping, solarizing, suffocating, boiling, blow torching (really), using strong chemicals that kill everything around it and sometimes leaving bindweed standing alone on the hill, victory flag in hand.  Yes, gardeners, it's war. We're on your side discussing what could work and how long it could take. Note: Be patient. And presenting 3 short comedies to ease your (and our) frustration. In interviews, performance reviews, or while sharing feedback.  Everyone agrees that being a team player is extremely desirable in an employee or vendor that a farmer does business with. We all in our minds have a definition of a team player, what’s yours?!According to Lencioni, a team player has three characteristics. Further, Lencioni states, when a team member significantly lacks one or more of these virtues, the process of building a cohesive team becomes hard, and in some cases, impossible. So in the words of your farm.  If you or a member if your team (family, employees, advisory team, or vendors) don’t share these attributes or aren’t working to grow them…..you’re less likely to succeed.Virtue #1 – HumbleThis is by far the most obvious and easiest to understand. Humility in a team member shows up as a lack of excessive ego, or concerns about personal status. Whoofta – who just thought of that salesman/buyer that you don’t like working with…..acting like their shit don’t stinkProbably also just thought about someone you know who always seems to genuinely care when you meet them for a conversationThey are quick to share credit, praise others freely, and sometimes even forego credit due to them in the interest of celebrating the team’s collective win. I’m thinking of an agronomist we just interviewed….even though he made the suggestions, he’s going to celebrate you when your production results come in.They demonstrate strong alignment towards the team’s goals, and prioritize collective wins over individual ones. Humble team players are self-confident, but not arrogant. A memorable quote that summarizes this indispensable attribute is:“Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less.”Note-Be careful: People who are insecure sometimes discount their own talents and thereby appear humble. People whose sense of self-worth is extremely deflated often end up hurting the team by being very passive. They don’t advocate for their ideas, nor call out the team’s inadequacies.Virtue #2 – HungryHungry: Hungry people are always looking for more.  (just like our listeners)They are intrinsically motivated, diligent, and have a strong desire to do more by going above and beyond. I think of most of these to be business owners.  I find in farming it is rare to find an employee that will go above and beyond for the benefit of their employer’s farm.  I know they exist, just think it is rare.Hungry people do not have to be pushed by their managers to perform; they are constantly looking for more responsibility, and thinking about the next step and the next opportunity (for the team).Who do you know, or just popped in your head right now as we described it?Do you work with them already? Can you hire this person?Note – be aware: Some people can be ‘hungry’ in a selfish way, and that is extremely detrimental to team health. Hunger driven by selfishness causes individual goals always trump collective team goals.Virtue #3 – SmartSmart: By ‘smart’, the author here refers to emotional intelligence and interpersonal awarenessThe capability to conduct oneself in a group situation and deal with others in the most effective way.Jen Hartman talked about this….some people just “get it” Emotionally intelligent people ask good questions, listen to what others are saying, and stay engaged in conversations intently. In-laws “Grumpy Dan” vs “Happy Dan”We all have landlords like this……some get it and others appear mean-heartlessSmart people exercise great judgment and intuition around the subtleties of group dynamics and are fully aware of the effect their words will have on the team.Note- watch out: ‘Smart’ness does not always imply good intentions. Watch out for ‘smart’ people who are in it for the wrong reasons. What happens if you or someone doesn’t have all three? The accidental mess-maker: You know that team member who is wicked smart, motivated and always bubbling with great ideas, but very often ends up rubbing others the wrong way? This person is Humble and Hungry, but not Smart! The skillful politician: That engineer who is everyone’s friend and confidant, and knows the perfect thing to say every time. He’s motivated, eager, and ambitious, but only where there’s an element of personal benefit The skillful politician, who is Hungry and Smart, but not Humble! The lovable slacker: He cares about everyone. He’s charming and always positive. He is technically capable, dependable, and is a solid member of the team. But — he does only as much as he is asked to do, and is rarely proactive with seeking newer areas of work. The lovable slacker, who is Humble and Smart, but not Hungry! The bulldozer: A powerhouse, he is determined to get stuff done, but with a focus on his personal achievements with little concern for his team. He neither knows nor cares how his words impact the people around him. A bulldozer who’s Hungry, but neither Humble nor Smart.Yada Yada Yada, right?  I still don’t think this matters to my little ol farm….. or it’s dad’s farm and I am just working here until he retires. This matters in so many areas.  Employees, the network around you, and the way you conduct yourself. How do I grow my farm?  Maybe by emitting these characteristics while serving on a board.  Meeting a future landlord and earning their trust.Maybe you develop a relationship with a cattle or hog buyer.  Get a trusting relationship that gets the most for your animal through mutual respect.Building trust in general….that’s how you learn about opportunities We all know a famer/rancher that seems to get into the win/win opportunities, do they possess these characteristics?Any other pieces of information to share with our listeners? What do you see your top producing or top tier of clients doing? –Common traitsSummaryChallengeSubmit questions and topic suggestionsLike, Rate, Review, Share

Sustainable World Radio- Ecology and Permaculture Podcast

Step into the vibrant and beautiful world of living color with natural dyer, designer, and artist Sasha Duerr. Sasha takes us on a journey from Soil to Studio. We learn how creating and working with dyes made from plants, seaweed, and other natural materials can increase our ecological and botanical knowledge, foster collaboration, and have a beneficial impact on ecosystems.  Natural dyeing offers us multiple opportunities to participate in solutions. Food scraps and green waste can transform old clothes into “new”. Instead of being buried at landfills and emitting VOC’s, organic materials like onion skins, pomegranate rinds, and citrus peels can be re-purposed into natural dyes that revitalize our wardrobes and lessen our carbon footprint. Some dyes can even be poured into the garden when finished and used as a fertilizer. Unwanted weeds in your yard or invasive plants in your neighborhood can also be turned into color. One of my favorite dyes is Sour Grass. I look forward to seeing this ubiquitous plant every winter. I collect loads of it and dye old clothes a neon yellow that really glows. (Note: Be sure to identify plants before using them as dyes- just in case they are toxic.) Sasha talks about a few of her favorite dyes including Loquat, Eucalyptus leaves, and Redwood Cones, all very appropriate plants for beginning dyers. We also learn about some of the palettes from her new book Natural Color. I especially loved the Pollinator and Perfume Palettes. They will make you swoon! What color story would you like your clothes to tell?  Sasha Duerr is an artist and designer who works with plant-based palettes, natural dyes, and place-based recipes. She is an Adjunct Professor at the California College of the Arts with a joint appointment in textiles and fine arts where she designs curriculum and teaches courses in the intersection of natural color, slow food, slow fashion, and social practice. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums across the United States and abroad. In 2007, Sasha founded the Permacouture Institute to encourage the exploration of regenerative design practices for fashion and textiles. Her extensive work with plant-based palettes and ecological principles through local land-based sources and community has been featured in many publications She is the author of The Handbook of Natural Plant Dyes, Natural Color, and Natural Palettes.Discover more about Sasha and her work at SashaDuerr.com. Anthony, Edgar, Barry, and International Thriller Writers award-winner Megan Abbott is one of my favorite writers working today. Not only the prolific author of acclaimed short stories and novels, including Queenpin, You Will Know Me, and Give Me Your Hand, she has also written White Masculinity in Hardboiled Fiction & Film Noir. Formerly a staff writer on David Simon's HBO original series, The Deuce, as a screenwriter, Megan Abbott recently adapted her gorgeous novel Dare Me for the USA Network and served as a co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner of the series, which was repeatedly named one of the best TV shows of 2020 and has also just been made available to stream on Netflix as well. A Grosse Pointe Michigan native who fell in love with old movies as a child and is still a highly respected film buff, she's also been a contributor to and essayist for The Criterion Collection. Megan, who received her PhD in English and American Literature from New York University, has worked as a professor at NYU, the State University of New York, as well as the New School University, and in 2013-2014, she served as the John Grisham writer-in-residence at Ole Miss. Well known for her rich prose and female-centric spin on the crime genre, in the past, Megan edited the anthology A Hell of a Woman, which was devoted to female crime fiction, and her work has appeared in The New York Times, Salon, The Wall Street Journal, The L.A. Times Magazine, The Guardian, and more. Megan's hotly-anticipated tenth novel, The Turnout, is due to be released this summer on July 6, 2021. It was both an honor and a privilege to speak to Megan about the underrated or overlooked films of Martin Scorsese - one of her favorite filmmakers as well as mine - in this enlightening and engaging episode, which fans of her work and Scorsese's are sure to love.Note: Be sure to stay tuned after our conversation for a postscript, where I fill listeners in on the changes to the podcast this "season" in 2021.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveOriginally Posted on Patreon (1/1/21) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/45644845

He outlines the specific areas in which disabled individuals are not receiving Covid-19 data  from the National and county governments indicating that the voices of disabled citizens are not being heard. As a public policy and diversity and inclusion expert, Paul also notes that a lack of food for disabled individuals is a major challenge, that stems from a lack of employment, no government subsidies  and the resulting lack of money with which to purchase food. Work Your Biz Like A Boss
Three Shortcuts to Discovering Your Brand

Work Your Biz Like A Boss

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 24, 2020

TranscriptBefore we dive into the three shortcuts to discovering your brand, I need to address the #1 marketing mistake most make and the difference between branding and marketing. Drum roll, please…the most common marketing mistake according to research is an inconsistent message that creates cognitive dissonance. Have you ever watched a commercial and you’re like, What the heck was that?! I don’t even know what they’re saying let alone selling! You’re left irritated and confused. In fact, you probably can’t even remember the name of the business because of the immediate confusion. That’s cognitive dissonance. Being cute, clever, and edgy means nothing if people don’t know what you’re saying. Your message needs to be so clear that a two-year-old gets it. Well, maybe not that extreme but pretty darn close. The Difference Between Branding and MarketingNow, let’s look at your branding and marketing. First, you need to develop your brand before you even begin marketing. Very simply, your brand is the personality of your business. It’s who you are as a person—core values, personality, and aspirations—that translates over into your business. Your identity is your business’s identity. For example, your personality will be drawn to certain colors, textures, and even fonts. Some like muted, earthy colors. Others love all the primary colors. More than likely that has translated over into your website. But your brand is more than colors and fonts It’s the feel and the experience people have when with you. That experience and feeling draws in your tribe. Note: Be careful though. Your website colors need to inspire the action you want people to take. If you want them to stay for a while, you need to use muted colors that are peaceful. If you want them to take action, you need bold colors like yellow, red, and orange. But don’t make your site so boring, people fall asleep and don’t make so colorful that they feel they’re trapped in a crayon box. Marketing is the vehicle to get your brand and its message out to your tribe, your target market. Your marketing whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, radio or TV needs to ooze your brand. People need to get a taste of your brand that leaves them wanting more. Three Shortcuts to Discovering Your BrandOkay, so two of these are free and one is $45 but totally worth it. After your finish this blog, click the announcement bar at the top and take my brand personality quiz. It takes about five minutes, and you’ll learn which of the 12 personalities you are, your goals, philosophy, fears, and what your followers expect from you, which you can use as a filter for all of your content not just marketing content. Next, go to howyoufascinate.com and take Sally Hogshead’s Fascination Advantage assessment. What I love about this assessment is that it shows how your potential clients see you. For example, I’m a Power and Trust combo meaning that I’m the one that solves my clients problems with authority and expertise. I’m the one that shows up when no one knows what to do and says, “Let’s do this and this and that.” The trust factor means that my clients trust me quickly and know that I’m dependable, reliable, and comfy like a cozy blanket. It also tells me that my clients don’t want surprises. When I conduct business with my combo, I’m in my zone and best received by others. And, finally, go over to Pinterest where you’ll create a board of the colors, textures, and fonts you like that you’ll then use for your website, Instagram, Facebook, and all other content. Use the following guidelines:Keep it within 15-20 images (you might start with a lot more but narrow it down in the end)Try to pin about 5 pins that fit into these categories: colors, fonts, textures, patternsShoot for consistency. Entire board should be a cohesive visual representation of what you thing fits the look and feel of what you want your site to beBy the time you’re done, you should see an overall picture of what you’re drawn to that’s cohesive and has the feel you like. For example, my Pinterest board has a lot of black, white, yellow and teal. Yellow is happy. Teal is a touch of peace, which I love. And black and white is professional and classy. So I’m professional with a lot of joy. You’ll have fun with me. In SummaryDiscovering your brand personality is a lot of fun. I didn’t know how to do any of this when I started my business. It took me a lot longer to figure it out. I don’t want you to struggle like I did. Use these tools, and you’ll save a lot of time, headache, and confusion! For more information on this process, read “My Exact Branding Research Process.”

"When we learn how to spot the narratives that get in the way of our happiness, we improve our chances of taking control of the stories that have for so long controlled us." —Paul Dolan, author of Happy Ever After: Escaping the Myth of the Perfect Life "There are countless stories about how we ought to live our lives . . . as such, many of these stories end up creating a kind of social dissonance whereby, perversely, they cause more harm than good. They become . . . narrative traps, which together form the myth of the perfect life." NOTE: Be sure to tune into the audio version of this episode as a detailed introduction and other conversation is shared. 1. Understand the difference between having wealth and being rich. Wealth is defined as accumulated assets in the form of savings, investment and property and is more difficult to measure. Rich is often understood to be a numerical amount of cash earned in income. Looking at one's wealth is a better reflection of a person's purchasing power. In other words, simply because someone "looks rich", does not mean they are rich. "Getting richer does not necessarily bring more happiness, partly becasue we upwardly adjust the people we compare ourselves to." 2. A happy life doesn't require you to have children "Happy and fulfilled lives are often supported by, but certainly do not require children. There are good reasons not to have children, both at the micro and macro level. It is not helpful, therefore, to push the 'have your own kids' narrative on everyone. Finding a way to celebrate rather than undermine people's decisions to remain childfree by loosening our hold on the social narrative can have a positive societal impact." 3. Stop comparing yourself to others and putting yourself in a position to be tempted to compare. Dolan suggests, if you are going to make comparisons, to make a comparison to any one of the other 7 billion people on our planet. Most likely you are doing very well financially. Not only will this provide perspective but also humility. 4. Let go of the pursuit for more money Once you have a enough money to live a life in which you are not struggling for the basic necessities, Dolan suggests taking the path to "just enough". Why? When we become aware of what we truly need, we are demonstrating we are cognizant of the social comparisons and status markers that may have pushed us to pursue more in the past. Understanding why we are pursuing what we are pursuing, to truly get to the core of the urge, is to make sure we are indeed thinking for ourselevs and not being unconsciously led around by the nose due to the narrative traps we are unaware surround us constantly. Once you stop pursuing more money, "you can stop constantly worrying". And what a gift to give yourself as your everydays will elevate immediately. 5. Reexamine what your success looks like, and let go of the pursuit for status Conscious living is at the heart of what we're talking about today, and becoming clear about what we are pursuiting and what is pushing us to achieve it is crucial to live a more contented life. If at the core of why you are pursuing a particular career is because of the status it will bring, applause you imagine will happen, then you are being led around by a narrative trap; however, if you are instead pursuing a field of study that ignites you, allows you to come to life and aligns with talents that naturally are easy to share, then you are on the right path for the success that will be unique to you. 6. Pursue a career in which many skills are utilized and your contributions are valued Dolan found that those individuals who work on a job that uses a variety of skills are happier. As well, if your work is valued, that too cultivates a work environment of enjoyment. Not only is a job that asks our minds and sometimes bodies to work different skill sets and tasks healthy regular exercise for our brains and beings, but it leads to a feeling of productivity at the end of the day which is very satisfying. Add the knowledge that what we are doing is contributing something of value that we are proud of that the pair is the perfect natural medicine for a sound and peaceful night of rest. 7. Women and girls and education Dolan found that receiving a basic education for girls had a significant effect on the overall happiness of their lives. In other words, making sure all people, but especially girls enables them to have agency over their own lives. Largely because the world is dominated by patriarchies, educating women to understand the world they live in and how to advocate for their own rights as well as navigate in the world that may not, depending upon where they live, want them to think for themselves, is crucial for the individual's happiness. 8. Understand the difference between passionate and companionate love "Given the way that love is portrayed in literature, film and the media, the prevailing narrative clearly places a high premium on its passionate aspect, most often in manipulatively uplifing ways." As shared previously on TSLL, being married is not the causation of happiness, but rather, if the happiness lasts beyond the short-term (as it does bring a feeling of euphoria to have met society's standard or expectation), it is due to two happy people finding each other. In other words, they knew how to be happy on their own and the happiness together, being happy in their choice to come together, likely increased their feelings of contentment. Dolan points these findings out as well. When it comes to falling for the trap of passionate love and trying to mold it into happily ever after, I have fallen into that narrative trap as well. The narrative of intense chemistry swirls around us constantly in the media, and it is up to us to be aware of what it is and what would be best for a long-lasting, healthy, loving relationship. 9. Be married, be single, it does not matter when it comes to happiness More and more studies are revealing that those who are married and happy are no more happy than any other group - single, widowed, divorced. The social narrative of promoting marriage as the goal is prevalent in our society and has been for decades in our modern lives (in previous centuries, due to lack of equality laws, it was often a necessity). When we can recognize the narrative trap, and be clear about what is speaking to us for how we wish to live our lives, we set ourselves free to live our best lives - whether that is with or without someone. Dolan books continues on to explore many other topics such as health, volition, monogamy and altruism. I encourage you to read it as it provides an exercise for the brain regarding the narrative traps we may have stepped into and did not realize it. To make a blanket statement and say that all social narratives are bad is not wise, but all should be explored, and likely, at least for me, you may find that most should be challenged. That is the difficult part as you are going against the grain of what society expects. Dolan reminds that any narrative that is predominant "always serves the interests of those in power, the groups they serve best will depend on the context". What he is suggesting we keep in mind whenever we talk about or consider and examine any narrative is to closely look at the narrative to understand all of the nuances and not make sweeping assumptions or statements. Fundamentally, when we let go of what no longer serves us, we set ourselves free, and much like fall and the as the quote below reminds, it is a lovely revealing of what we have the opportunity to experience as we go about living a life that will bring us far more contentment than we ever thought possible. "Trees are about ready to show us how lovely it is to let things go." —Emily Ley, A Simplified Life SIMILAR POSTS/EPISODES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: 5 Things to Stop Romanticizing Being Single is Luxurious Living, episode #170 7 Components of Healthy, Strong Relationships, episode #11 Why Not . . . In this 5/12/19 sermon, Elder Michael Gowens looks at the compelling analogy in Isaiah 49:15-16 - a comparison between a mother's devotion to her infant child and the Lord's covenant commitment to His people. Though we can think of few bonds as strong in the realm of nature as that between a mother and her child, yet God's covenant love for His children is stronger still. That inviolable loyalty to the objects of His everlasting love is the basis of both their eternal security and temporal hopes for the future. Note: Be advised that a power outage drove our congregation into the Fellowship Hall for worship, resulting in the use of a portable recording unit with a condenser mic instead of our ordinary sound system. Standing upright, place a PhysioBall between your back and the wall. The ball should rest mid-back, just below your shoulder blades. Keep abdominals engaged and spine/back neutral. Place feet a comfortable distance apart with toes and knees pointing forward. Chin should be lifted, shoulders down/back, and arms resting down by the side. Take 1 step forward with each foot (so that when you squat down, the angle at the knee is approximately 90 degrees). Lean against the ball, begin sitting downward and allow the ball to roll upward. Place body weight in heels and squat down until your thighs are parallel with the floor (or 90 degrees at the knee joint). NOTE: Be sure that the knees don’t go past toes. It is not recommended to squat any deeper than 90 degrees).
