A follow-up to last week's Hockey Update. Not all the news is good. This week's movie is based on a true story, a first for this podcast. As such, Steve dives into the real history of Alfred (Alferd) Packer.Cannibal! The Musical: A musical bit of fan fic surrounding the real life "adventures" of Alfred Packer, a 19th Century American who served in the Civil War, became a wilderness guide and gold miner, then ate a bunch of guys. That escalated quickly, huh? The movie might just be a vehicle to mock a woman Trey Parker was in a relationship with at one time, as her namesake in the movie is Packer's fictional horse, Lianne, aka The Horse Who Would Let Anybody Ride Her. He may have made this entire movie just to talk about her.Yor, The Movie with the Wordy Title final grade: Steve: It was entertaining. If you're a fan of South Park or Team America: World Police, you'll like this as a kind of origin story for Trey and Matt. Their restaurant doesn't have very good food, FYI. The local twist of this movie makes it interesting to us. 2.75/5.0Brandon: This one was a little shpadoinkle, but not all the way shpadoinkle. You could see bits and pieces of things that would later become the kind of humor that would make these guys boatloads of cash with South Park and other stuff. 2.5/5.0Cocktail of the Week:The Cannibal Reviver1 oz Gin1/2 oz Lemon Juice1/2 oz Yellow Chartreuse or Genepy de Chamois1/2 oz Dolin Sweet White VermouthPeychaud BittersCombine everything in a cocktail shaker. Shake to combine and chill, then strain into a rocks glass over ice. Garnish with a lemon wedge/wheel. Cocktail Grade: Maybe it's the fact that we're not popping the $80 for a bottle of Chartreuse, and the Genepy stuff messes it up, but this one was just OK. A bit of an anise flavor that will turn off black licorice haters. The future is mediocre, but that's a good thing! In this midweek review our prognosticators ponder the future near and far. Who will be the Giants All-Stars? Are we seeing 2/3 of next year's outfield in Matos & Ramos? Can Hayden Birdsong hold out until reinforcements arrive? Then they look to the second half of the season. This isn't the end! Or is it? Our die hard fans argue if this current rough patch is the just low point of the season or the beginning of the end. It's not quite Fall, in fact we have about 3.5 more weeks of SUMMER. Although, if you're part of the SPOOKY COMMUNITY it starts after JULY 4th. Interestingly enough we attended the Midsummer Scream 2023 Halloween Convention the same weekend The Haunted Mansion movie opened in theaters. We FINALLY both watched the movie after attending the Midsummer Scream 2023 The Haunted Mansion panel a couple weekends ago in Long Beach, CA.We were pleasantly surprised by some of the Behind The Scenes facts and the respect NOLA (New Orleans, LA) received in the new movie. But did we both like the film? Did it resonate as a family FALL classic for the rest of Eternity? Have you watched the Eddie Murphy 2003 movie? TBH we haven't watched the Muppet Movie one yet.Jonathan Eirich PRODUCER, "HAUNTED MANSION"Phillip Bartell EDITOR, "HAUNTED MANSION"We also revisit our Empress Leota cocktail we made a couple years ago on our @ParanormalCocktails TikTok channel.Courtesy of the HAUNTED MANSION FAN CLUB on FACEBOOKAda Roberts post.Empress Leota:1 1/2oz Empress gin (purple)1/2 oz Lemon Juice1/4 oz Orange Juice1/2 oz Honey simple syrup Soda or Sparkling waterRim a half ball glass with your favorite sugar crystals.Mix gin, juices and syrup over ice. They bring over a quarter century of restaurant experience to the podcast table. This weeks episode: WITCHES DAIQUIRI & OKRAWITCHES DAIQUIRIThe key to this drink is Strega, the liquor is named witch and makes everything ever so delightfully spooky.Pour the following into a shaker filled with ice.1 oz Rum (we used light rum so we could keep the colour of this drink light and bright).2/3 oz Strega1/3 oz Orgeat1/2 oz Lemon Juice1/2 oz Orange JuiceShake it and curse your enemies. If you have a fine strainer use it to strain the drink into a tulip glass, the strainer will assist in removing the pulp from the citrus.Spear an amarena cherry and place it on the glass.Let this drink put you in a spell and enjoy!MASALA OKRA (Bhindi!)Wash them, dry them, slice them quickly, and don't overcook them - these are the pillars of good okra cooking!Ingredients 2 tbsp olive oil1 lb (20-30) okra, washed, dried, sliced lenghtwise1/2 onion, minced fine1 small tomato, diced finely1 tsp cumin seeds1/2 tsp turmeric1/2 tsp red chili powder of chili flakes1/2 tsp amchoor (mango powder)4 garlic cloves, minced and smashed1 tsp ginger pasteFresh lemon juiceFresh cilantroNote: Some people will fry the okra on its own in oil, remove it, make the masala, and then add the okra back to it. This method is fine, but often yields a slightly mushy okra - which i aint having nothin to do with! SO...Over medium heat, add olive oil to a large non-stick panAdd onions and brown them slightly (this is add flavour)Once onions are half browned, add the dry spices and fry for 2 minutesAdd garlic and ginger, fry for 2 minutes and then add tomatoes . Fry while moving around the pan for 2 minutes Add salt to taste and a little bit of fresh lemon juice. This is your masala.Add cut okra, fry for 5 minutes at MOST - make sure they still have a crunch to them but have absorbed the flavour of the masalaAdd another squeeze of lemon juice if you like, garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with roti!If you liked this episode: Rate, Review & Subscribe and tell your friends. If you didn't like it, there is a whole slog of podcasts out there for you to explore and enjoy and we hope you do! You know that saying "give people their roses while they can still smell them"? It doesn't specify how many roses or even that you have to give multiple roses. It is easy to prioritize quantity over quality... but the primary factor is actually intention. Show love whenever and however you can, in the best ways possible. That love includes yourself. Love yourself so much that you don't need to put guards up. Love yourself so much that your love inspires other. Love is contagious... spread it! Speaking of love, we think you'll love the drink we've concocted for Episode 23 called A Dozen Roses. Mix it up and press play.
