Top Credit Report Myths with Neile Simon

What do Bigfoot and credit reports have in common? They're each the subject of many myths. We don't know much about 8-foot furry creatures, but we can dispel some of the folklore about credit and credit reports. Neile Simon is here to help us do that today.Neile Simon is a Certified Credit Counselor with Christian Credit Counselors (CCC), an underwriter of Faith & Finance. If you've ever wondered whether closing a credit card boosts your score or if credit counseling hurts your credit, you're not alone. Let's dive into these common misconceptions and separate fact from fiction.Myth #1: Paying Off Debt Instantly Improves Your Credit ScoreIt's a common belief that paying down debt will immediately result in a perfect credit score. However, credit improvement takes time because credit scores are based on your payment history.Reality: Your credit report gives lenders a snapshot of how responsibly you've managed debt over time. Consistently paying bills on time is the best way to build and maintain a strong score—but it won't happen overnight.Tip: Be cautious of anyone claiming they can “fix” your credit instantly. No legitimate company can erase negative (but accurate) information from your credit history overnight.Myth #2: Credit Counseling Destroys Your Credit ScoreMany people worry that seeking credit counseling will harm their credit score.Reality: Enrolling in a credit counseling program is a neutral mark on your credit report and does not directly affect your score. Closing accounts impacts your score, so working with an accredited nonprofit organization is essential to develop a plan that keeps your credit intact. That's why Christian Credit Counselors is the only organization we recommend for credit counseling and debt management. Tip: Avoid paying for expensive credit monitoring or identity protection services. You can monitor your credit for free through reputable sources.Myth #3: Canceling Credit Cards Boosts Your ScoreMany people believe that closing old or unused credit cards is a responsible move, but it can actually hurt their credit scores.Reality: Lenders want to see two or three active credit lines. Closing credit cards reduces your available credit, which can negatively impact your score by increasing your credit utilization ratio (the percentage of available credit you're using).Tip: Keep zero-balance accounts open unless they charge an annual fee. If you must close an account, do so gradually—perhaps one every six months—to minimize the temporary impact on your score.Myth #4: Too Many Inquiries Hurt Your ScoreWhile excessive hard inquiries (when lenders check your credit for a loan or credit card application) can lower your score, not all inquiries count against you.Reality: Credit bureaus recognize rate shopping—for example, when you're comparing mortgage or auto loan rates. If you make multiple inquiries within a 45-day window, they count as one single inquiry, not multiple.Tip: Always shop around for the best loan terms without worrying about multiple hits to your credit score.Myth #5: Checking Your Own Credit Report Hurts Your ScoreMany consumers avoid checking their credit reports because they fear it will negatively impact their scores.Reality: Checking your own credit is a "soft inquiry" and does not affect your score. Only "hard inquiries" (such as applying for a loan or credit card) can impact your score.Tip: Review your credit report every 6–12 months to catch errors or fraud early. Get a free report from AnnualCreditReport.com, the only official site for free credit reports.Myth #6: Credit Scores Are Locked In for Six MonthsSome believe their credit score is only updated periodically, leading to confusion when making financial decisions.Reality: Your credit score is dynamic, meaning it updates as new information is reported—not every six months. Changes in balances, payments, and account activity can impact your score as soon as they are reported by creditors.Tip: If you're working on improving your score, be patient and consistent—your efforts will show over time.Myth #7: If I Pay My Bills on Time, I Don't Need to Check My Credit ReportIt seems logical that paying your bills on time means your credit report is in good shape. But that's not always the case.Reality: 80% of credit reports contain errors. Mistakes like incorrect account information or fraudulent activity can damage your score even if you've never missed a payment.Tip: Check your credit report at least once a year to identify errors and dispute inaccuracies before they hurt your financial standing.Myth #8: All Credit Reports Are the SameMany people assume that if they check one credit report, they've seen them all.Reality: There are three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—and they all calculate scores differently. Some lenders may pull from only one bureau, while others check all three.Tip: Review reports from all three bureaus to get a complete picture of your credit history and spot discrepancies.Myth #9: A Divorce Decree Automatically Removes You from Joint AccountsDivorce proceedings often divide assets and debts, but that does not automatically separate joint accounts.Reality: If you and your former spouse share a loan or credit account, both of you remain responsible for the debt—even if a court assigns the balance to one person.Tip: To protect yourself, close joint accounts or refinance loans to remove your ex-spouse's name. Simply relying on a court order won't protect your credit.Myth #10: Bad Marks Automatically Disappear After Seven YearsMany assume that negative information automatically falls off their report after seven years, but it's more complicated than that.Reality: Some items, like Chapter 7 bankruptcies, remain on your report for 10 years, while Chapter 13 bankruptcies stay for seven years. Paid-off accounts in good standing can remain for 10 years, which benefits your credit history.Tip: If you have negative marks on your report, focus on building positive credit habits to minimize their impact over time.Myth #11: I Can Pay Someone to “Fix” My CreditCredit repair companies often promise quick fixes, but many of their claims are misleading.Reality: No company can legally remove accurate negative information from your credit report. If a debt is legitimately yours, it will stay on your report until its expiration date.Tip: You can dispute errors yourself for free. Christian Credit Counselors provides free resources and sample dispute letters to help you correct inaccuracies. The Truth About Credit ReportsUnderstanding your credit report and score is essential for financial success. By debunking these myths, you can take control of your credit and make informed financial decisions.Check your credit report regularly for errorsKeep credit card accounts open to maintain a strong scoreShop around for loans without worrying about multiple inquiriesWork with trusted advisors, not credit repair scamsIf you're struggling with credit card debt, Christian Credit Counselors can help. When Nisha Vora went vegan at the age of 28, she thought her lifelong love affair with food was coming to an end. But after discovering that smoothies and acai bowls did not count as meals, her hunger pushed her to become a much better cook. Now, her latest cookbook, Big Vegan Flavor, is a bestseller. She joins us to discuss how to make flavorful plant-based recipes -- and take listener calls. Here's a recipe from the cookbook:Sticky Coconut Milk–Braised TofuServes 3 to 4 | GFO, NFAs much as I love crispy tofu, I may love this braised tofu even more. Here, squares of tofu are pan-fried until golden and crispy, then braised in a Thai-inspired blend of coconut milk, soy sauce, lemongrass, and spices. Frying the tofu first makes the perfect porous surface for the deeply savory and slightly sweet braising liquid to seep into, creating that spongy and chewy yet tender texture found in Chinese restaurant tofu dishes.Tip: To serve a crowd, double the tofu and braising liquid. Fry the tofu in two batches; after frying the first batch, start simmering the liquid in a 3-quart (2.8 L) saucepan, then follow the recipe as written.Big-Flavor Meals: Serve over a bed of jasmine white rice or brown rice, along with blanched or stir-fried green beans, bok choy, or broccolini.1 (14-ounce/400 g) block extra-firm tofu, drainedKosher salt3 tablespoons neutral-flavored oil of choiceBraising Liquid1 tablespoon coriander seeds1 (13.5-ounce/400 ml) can full-fat coconut milk1/2 cup (140 g) soy sauce or tamari (use tamari for GF)1/4 cup (84 g) agave nectar (or organic brown sugar or cane sugar)2 lemongrass stalks, minced (see page 472 for prep tips)1-inch (2.5 cm) piece fresh ginger, thinly sliced (peel on okay)4 large garlic cloves, smashed1 to 3 Thai chiles (or 1 serrano pepper), stemmed and sliced in half vertically (use 3 chiles for spicy!; omit for mild heat)1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper1 (2-inch) cinnamon stickFor ServingCooked white or brown riceRoasted black or white sesame seeds1 handful chopped cilantro or Thai basil (optional)1. Wrap the tofu in a thin dish towel or a few paper towels and press for 10 to 15 minutes (see page 265).2. Slice the tofu in half vertically, then flip each slab around and slice crosswise into squares about 1/2-inch (1 to 1.5 cm) thick. Arrange the tofu in a single layer on a cutting board. Gently press down on the squares with a towel to release more water. Sprinkle the tofu with a couple of pinches of salt. Line a large plate with a few paper towels.3. Heat a 12-inch (30 cm) nonstick skillet over medium-high heat for 2 minutes, then add the oil and heat for 30 seconds. Carefully add the tofu, arranging it in a single layer. Move the tofu around in the oil to evenly coat it and cook until golden brown on the bottom, 5 to 7 minutes. Use a thin spatula to flip and cook until the other side is also golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes.4. While the tofu cooks, make the braising liquid. Use the back of a large knife or a sturdy mug to roughly crush the coriander seeds. Or you can use a mortar and pestle or pulse once in a spice grinder.5. In a medium (2-quart/2 L) heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the coconut milk, soy sauce, agave, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, chiles (if using), roughly crushed coriander, white pepper, and cinnamon. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally, then reduce the heat and simmer for 7 to 8 minutes. It should be very flavorful and quite salty.6. Add the fried tofu to the braising liquid and stir to coat. A few pieces of tofu will peek up above the liquid, but that's okay. Simmer gently, stirring occasionally, until the tofu is almost wrinkly and the liquid has thickened into a sauce that sticks to the tofu, about 35 minutes. 7. Remove from the heat and let cool briefly; discard the cinnamon stick. Serve over rice, pour a little braising liquid on top of the rice (not a lot, as it's quite potent), and garnish with sesame seeds and herbs.

In this week's Marketing Tip we will make it easy for you to regularly create content that entices, educates, and inspires your audience. Welcome to Marketing Tip Monday with SIP Certified. We know customers are looking for wines labeled as sustainable. While our longer-form episodes help you learn about the latest science and research for the wine industry, these twice-monthly micro podcasts will help you share your dedication to sustainable winegrowing so you can show your customers that you share their values. If you've been following along with this series, you created a bank of powerful video and photo visuals last month. Today we're going to share how you can use those images on your brand's social media. If you missed the Tip, just search your podcast player for Sustainable Winegrowing podcast episode 194: The Power of Visuals: How Video and Photos Can Help Share Your Sustainable Story | Marketing Tip Monday. I highly recommend taking a few minutes to link to today's show notes. We are sharing real life social media examples from 3 SIP Certified brands and while I will do my best to describe the images, it helps to see them. Stay tuned to the end to learn how the talent behind our social media, Hayli, creates captivating Reels. How to Use Your Brand's Presence Regularly posting content on your social media keeps your brand in the eyes and minds of your followers. It's a good idea to stay active on your business's social media accounts, but the idea of constantly creating fresh content can be daunting. The good news is, there is an endless supply of content for your brand. Have you heard of food disconnect? It's a term used to describe the average consumer's lack of knowledge about where their food comes from and how it's made. When it comes to wine, most people only see the finished product in the bottle. What may seem day-to-day to you is unique and exciting to consumers. Most wine drinkers do not get to see punch downs, bud break, staff tastings, cover crops, barn owls, or bottling lines. It is all exciting! Use your brand's presence on social media to give an intimate look at all of the care that goes into taking your customers' favorite wines from the vine to the tasting room. Here are 3 examples from SIP Certified brands: 1. Enchant & Entice Villa San Juliette (@villasanjuliette) created a video mash up showing exquisite views of the vines from the tasting room, beautiful Spanish inspired architecture, the crew harvesting grapes into bins, and a table of sumptuous food and wine pairings. Each of these videos could have started out as a standalone post then combined later into one video to tempt followers to pay them a visit this season. Look at your past posts. Can you combine the images into one reel or carousel that showcases your brand? 2. Educate & Delight Anyone who follows Bon Niche Cellars (@bonnichecellars) knows that they can always count on two things from their posts: learning something new and seeing adorable animals! This post does both. The image is a close up of an adorable, fuzzy white sheep with a black nose and long ears. The caption explains how sheep are part of their sustainability program from weed abatement to soil health. Consumers love seeing and learning about animals. Talk about the gopher hunting owls, native bobcats, and friendly dogs at your property. 3. Express & Inspire Foxen Wines (@foxenwines) uses their voice on social media to express their dedication to the social component of sustainability and thank the instrumental people behind their wines. The artfully captured photo shows a hazy sky with a farmworker walking away from the camera carrying a bin of freshly harvested grapes down the vineyard row. Part of the caption reads, “At the heart of our commitment to sustainability lies Social Equity.” Sustainability means taking care of our most valuable resource – the people. Talk about the organizations you donate to and how you care for your staff by providing competitive wages, comprehensive healthcare, and access to education.” Hayli's Tips to Create Great Instagram Reels Have you noticed that the quality of Vineyard Team and SIP Certified's social media content has boomed this year? That's because our newest team member, Hayli, has passion and talent for creating content that is compelling and aesthetically pleasing. We asked her for her top 3 tips to create captivating Reels – these are the short videos, often featuring text and catchy tunes that you see on Instagram. Here's what she said:  A Word on Reels “While I love carousels, infographics, and even simple and beautiful photos, Reels bring content to life. Reels offer a unique way to showcase content and allow viewers to feel like they're right there with us, experiencing everything in real-time.” – Hayli Macomber 1. Prep-work. I always get multiple 5- to 15-second video clips during our in-person events. Capturing diverse moments is important. For example, at a Tailgate meeting, I'll take videos of the presenter, panel discussions, the vineyard, attendees networking and enjoying coffee, animal visitors... even a scan of the packed parking lot! These pieces create the "story" later. Tip: Get video from different angles and directions so the movement isn't repetitive.  2. Music. Music plays a significant role in our lives, and Reels are no exception! If I hear music in a Reel that catches my attention, I save the audio (at the bottom right of every Reel with audio, there is a small square image – you can click on it and save the audio for later). It's also good to keep an ear out for trending audio and mix that in... while it's still trending, of course :) Tip: To build a good audio collection, spend 10 minutes each week scrolling through Reels and saving audio. 3. Timing. Music creates the flow of a Reel – I like to change from clip to clip with the beat. It's also good to make sure none of the clips are too long in comparison with the others (i.e. one is 10 seconds and the next one is 3 seconds). If you have a longer video, try splitting it up – use the clips in different sections of the Reel. Tip: In "Edit Video" (bottom left), use 2 fingers to zoom in on the video and audio. This helps transition from clip to clip at the perfect moment!” There are Hayli's 3 tips. To check out our latest posts look for @sipcertified or @thevineyardteam on Instagram. Coming Up... 100+ BEST WEIGHT LOSS TRICKS OF ALL TIME
3. HUNGER AND APPETITE. Understand the mechanisms that drive us to eat. What regulates hunger and appetite? Which natural biochemicals in our bodies can dampen hunger, and how can we activate them?

100+ BEST WEIGHT LOSS TRICKS OF ALL TIME

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 20, 2022 26:19

Appetite. Appetite is the desire to consume food. It may or may not be driven by hunger. Eating triggers. Certain things trigger physiological signals that tell your body to get ready for eating. These triggers may be psychological, chemical, cultural, the result of habit etc. Factors such as the smell or sight of food, sounds associated with food such as clinking tableware, and even mental images and thoughts of food stimulate your cerebral cortex. Your brain then sends messages via the vagus nerve to your stomach, telling it to secrete gastric juices in readiness for receiving food. People usually call the sensation of desiring or needing food “hunger”, but that feeling may not be true hunger at all. The desire for food—which is called “appetite”—can be triggered by many things other than true hunger. Often, the terms “hunger” and “appetite” are used interchangeably, but their meanings are, in fact, different. Regulation of hunger and appetite. Your body regulates appetite via the neuroendocrine system. Together the endocrine system and nervous system can be called the “neuroendocrine system”. It's the endocrine system that detects changes in your body, such as those that happen when food enters your mouth. It reacts to these changes by releasing hormonal messengers. These appetite-regulating hormones include leptin, ghrelin, insulin and cholecystokinin (CCK). They play a role in hunger, satiation/ satiety and energy balance. Meanwhile your nervous system sends out electrical impulses and biochemicals called neurotransmitters. These direct the various parts of your digestive system to churn and process the food, and keep pushing it through your body. In other words when you eat food, your body responds in numerous ways. Signals are transmitted back and forth between your brain and your body's other organs. The stretching of the stomach signals fullness. Your brain and stomach start to register feelings of fullness about 20 minutes after you begin eating a meal. When you eat, food passes into the bag-like stomach, which stretches to accommodate the food. The stretching of your stomach triggers the appetite control switch in your brain. This tells you to stop eating (satiation) and dampens your hunger for a while, until your body requires more energy and nutrients. TIP: To make good use of this appetite-reducing trigger, eat foods that occupy a lot of room in your stomach, but contain few Calories. Examples include vegetable soups, which contain quite a lot of water, and fresh garden salads. When your stomach is chronically over-stretched by overeating, your body's sensors lose their sensitivity. That appetite control switch in your brain becomes confused and the “stop eating” signals don't work properly. TIP: The solution to this problem—eat smaller portions. CCK helps reduce appetite. When food enters your stomach it also triggers off the release of cholecystokinin, or CCK. This is a protein that helps reduce appetite and prolong satiety. One of CCK's actions is to close the valve that leads from your stomach into the lower GI tract, temporarily trapping the food so that the stomach can do its work of grinding and breaking down the food into smaller particles. The longer food remains in your stomach, the longer you feel full and satisfied.

There is a traditional "right of passage" when our children move from being a Senior in High School to a student at college. This event is celebrated at a High School Graduation - which this year is very different. In today's episode I talk with moms across the country about how they're celebrating their seniors of The Class of 2020 during the pandemic. At times the conversation got emotional and at times inspirational. What became very clear is how important the traditions of Senior Year are not only for the students but also for the parents. I feel honored that these mothers would talk so candidly with me on how they felt about all the changes they were experiencing.  Here are a few of the ideas that these moms did to help their seniors celebrate.  -You children will take their cues only how to handle the situation from their parents. If you explain to them that this is not just happening to them or their town but all over the world it will help put a more positive outlook on it. They will follow the parents lead. -Have you senior get dressed up for photos for Prom and Graduation.  -For Prom your senior can get dressed up and then make their favorite meal and have a dance party at home with the family.  -Find a special place for the photos to take place. Even though they might be "Fake Photos" it's still the opportunity to record memories. You'll have these photos for the rest of your lives and be able to look back on this time as a few moments of positivity.  -If your schools have traditions you can do some of these traditions at home. For instance, one of the moms continued the tradition of making purple margaritas. Tip: To make a purple margarita you can use purple sugar that'd you'd use to decorate cookies.  -Decorate the seniors bedroom door or front door.  -One of the BIGGEST helps is have the "Grandparents" get involved in the planning. Your senior will not say no to their grandparents!  -Have a graduation in the backyard. Have them walk outside and do a ceremony in a special place.  -Perhaps your town will allow some time of "social distancing" graduation outside. Work with your school to find opportunities.  -And finally, a lot of the children don't know what they're missing out on. It might be more for the adults than the children. Be sure to keep it in check.  Thank you so much for these moms to be so honest and open with how they're feeling and how they're making the most of this unprecedented situation. I wish The Class of 2020 that even though they are not getting the graduation they might have hoped for, they are resilient and stepping up into their futures with hope, purpose and passion. I've never felt more optimistic about the future than I do seeing how incredible this class is pivoting and making lemonade out of lemons! God bless you!

NOTE from Masha: As these episode are being released, the world is dealing with the coronavirus crisis. Because all episodes in the season were recorded well in advance, this is not discussed on the show. I hope that you will apply the same themes that we discuss throughout the Bold Adulting podcast to coping and supporting both yourself and others in your community (including the global community) -- reaching out to people (virtually) figuring out what you want to make progress on and making a plan being open about what you're going through with the people who you feel comfortable sharing with looking for evidence-based resources remembering that you are not alone If you want to connect with me to discuss what you're going through (about this or anything else), please feel free to email me or find me on Facebook (send me a message letting me know you found me through the podcast).   I also strongly suggest connecting with other caring and compassionate people through the Facebook group Distance Resistance (which I don't run but I participate in) which is about staying connected even while we have to stay apart. You can also find a lot of information there about getting help or giving help -- this is a is moment to come together. In a Bold Adulting workshop, a group of UC San Diego Grad Women in Computing grad students explore how to feel confident in the face of struggles, strategize about solving their problems, and discuss the extra obstacles that international students can face. Note - The audio in this episode isn’t perfect, but I hope you’ll still find it worth a listen. (I’ve since improved my ability to record my workshops.) - Masha   See the activities covered in Success in Grad School & Beyond workshops and fill out this interest form if you might want to book a workshop.  These workshops are great for any group who wants to improve their career confidence and make progress for goals!    Mentioned in this episode: Grad Women in Computing Huge thanks to Ailie Frasier (LinkedIn, Twitter), Trisha Ngoon (LinkedIn, Twitter), and Steven Rick (LinkedIn, Twitter) for bringing Masha in to work with your amazing group!  The Getting To Know You activity has participants use the American Sign Language (ASL) signs SAME and DIFFERENT to visually see how they relate to each other. If you have ideas about how to make this website useful for getting back in touch after a while of not responding, please let me know at masha@boldadulting.com  This is inspired by Reply All podcast’s Email Debt Forgiveness Day Note #2: In the episode, Masha mentions that referencing a website that normalizes the experience of taking a long time to respond to a message means that you can reply with 'no guilt'. To be clear, it's not that a late response/lack of a response is something that never does harm. It is sometimes appropriate to apologize for harm that may have been caused by email etiquette issues. Certainly, if not responding means that another person missed a deadline or that you didn't follow through on a commitment, it is best to take responsibility. However, too often, people feel guilt even if a) it hasn't actually been a long time, b) there was no real negative consequence, and/or c) your circumstances mean that it is understandable that some things would have fallen through the cracks. Even if you feel bad, the most important thing is to get back in touch rather than never reach out again because of your bad feels.    Tip: To feel better, play music. Unlocking Your Nonprofit Potential

It seems like everybody likes Instagram, but not everybody knows how to use it. Even some of the smartest, brightest, most tech-savvy people I know still get confused on how to use Instagram Today, we are walking you through the very basics. Yes, Instagram 101. We’ll talk about the most important parts, the things you should be doing on a regular basis when you’re posting for your nonprofit, and I’ve got some tips on making sure the people in your local area see your posts. First things first, Instagram is designed to be used on your phone. You can sign into your Instagram account on a computer, but it’s confusing to use and some parts of it don’t even work on a computer, so get in the habit of using it on your phone. Instagram has two main features – the Feed and Stories. The Feed is the big square pictures you see as soon as you open up the app. It’s where all the pictures show up from the people you follow. When you create a new post on your profile, it appears in the Feed. Stories are in that little line of circle pictures above the Feed.   The biggest difference between the Feed and Stories, is that Stories only last for 24 hours and then they are deleted. Each person’s story is only 15 seconds long, max, but you can record an entire series of 15 second stories and they will play like one long one. Just like on Facebook, you need to have a great Instagram profile that has all of your contact information, your website, your address, a great bio – because when people discover you on Instagram, they will be heading to your profile to learn more about you. Be sure to include at least your city and state. An example of a great Instagram bio for a kids’ after school program: “Helping kids build self-confidence with fitness.” Here are 4 things to keep in mind as you recycle your Facebook posts into Instagram posts: Make your captions Instagram-friendly. Add hashtags. Use popular local hashtags, like #InBend or #BoiseLife Add a location. Post to your Story. Tip: To delete something from your story like the date, text, emoji, location or something - just hold down on it with your finger and drag it to the trash can that appears. Challenge: Search for a popular public place in your area and like 5 photos from people that recently checked in there. Send me an email! I’d love to hear what questions you have! https://www.nonprofitpotential.com/contact Let’s be friends… Find me on social media and let me know what kind of nonprofit or business you’re working with! 8 Ideas to Help You Work Smarter and Not Harder

The Business Accelerator: Accountability | Productivity

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 27, 2019 10:21

Today we are going to talk about 8 Ideas to Help You Work Smarter and Not Harder. Do you think working harder will get you farther? Not necessarily. In this fast-paced society, many professionals are already running at full tilt, so going faster may lead to burn-out, or worse, complete physical and emotional shutdown. So how do you get more done without working harder? This is key to work life balance success. Let's take a look at these 8 ideas for working smarter, not harder. 1. Leverage Your Strengths, Delegate the Rest For optimal results, focus on the tasks that leverage your strengths. The goal with any successful business or project is to assign the team member that can deliver the best results with the least effort and greatest effectiveness. If you want to make an easier go at it, know your strengths and focus on performing only the tasks that leverage those strengths. TIP: To download a Free Delegation List Sample to help you identify more activities to delegate, go to https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/delegation-list-sample/. 2. Filter Your Info Intake On any given day, you are bombarded with mass amounts of information that can significantly drag down your productivity and cause confusion, overwhelm, and procrastination. Data is essential for making informed decisions, but beware of information overload. Only take in the information that is vital to achieving your goals and the goals of your firm – everything else is superfluous. TIP: Delegate the biggest information sources (email, research, data collection, data entry, etc.) to a team member or a consulting firm. Limit your information exposure to only the pertinent sources, while the team takes on the responsibility of flagging important information for your select review and firm growth. 3. Streamline Your Daily Duties Do not try to do it all yourself. The ability to focus your energy on the most important tasks of the day has a direct effect on the quality of the results. Therefore, it's vital that you streamline your daily duties to only the most important tasks that require your focused attention, and those things that only you can do and can't be done by someone else. TIP: Create a daily schedule of the most important and highest payoff tasks of the day – and stick to it (not always easy but critical to your success). Reduce and eliminate the non-essential duties (the tasks that are either not in alignment with your core values and/or are not income-generating) from your daily schedule. Take advantage of the high-content Free Webinars to help you be even more effective at time management and more by going to: https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/free-articles/free-webinars/. 4. Recognize Stress Signals The mind and body require rest and nutrition for peak performance. While many of us convince ourselves that working harder is the only way to get ahead, it may not produce the desired results. Take breaks, enjoy personal time, and tend to your well-being is important to overall life success. Sometimes a little rest can significantly increase productivity. TIP: Listen to your body. Pay attention to your energy level. Pushing harder to make things happen may only make the process more frustrating and even exhausting. If working harder doesn't feel right, give yourself permission to take a break. Be it 15 minutes or 1 hour, recognizing your stress signals can help you know when your body and mind need rest. You will perform better and more effectively when you have all your positive energy flowing. 5. Create Just Enough Pressure How many times have you procrastinated on getting something done only to cram the day or night before it was due? Creating just enough pressure may be the “tipping point” that you believe creates the focus you need to reach peak-productivity. TIP: Pay attention to what drives you to complete a task. Does it require a non-pressured, open-space environment with lots of time? Or some-what of a high-pressured environment to get you into action? Are you typically someone who likes to “go where the flow takes you” or do you prefer to “plan every step” far in advance? What approach produces the best results with the least amount of stress for you? Could you plan ahead even better to get things done without being last minute? 6. Maximize High Energy Cycles Following your body's natural energy cycles can help you produce better results with less effort. For instance, some people prefer to get in a healthy workout before they start their day, while others may prefer to exercise in the afternoon. Perhaps you are more sharp, on your toes, and energetic first thing in the morning. Maybe you typically get a burst of energy in the afternoon? Or perhaps you do your best work burning the midnight oil? Follow your natural energy cycles to produce the best results with the least amount of effort is ideal. TIP: Do the tasks that require the most energy and focus during your peak energy cycle. Schedule it – and follow what you have put on your calendar in order to be in the highest probability position to achieve your goals. 7. Organize and Systematize The goal with any business or profession is to produce the best results with the greatest amount of efficiency and effectiveness. Working smarter, not harder is all about systems. Systems create reliable pathways to handle business transactions and daily duties in an organized and efficient manner. Many firms don't enforce the creation of systems and processes for all jobs performed. Many team members push back by saying they don't have enough time to create them and thinking this is their job security. TIP: Create systems for everything so that you and your team can process everything from business prospects to client projects. Systems are necessary to: reduce work time, improve client results, grow your business or clientele, increase profits, reduce expenses, improve overall productivity, and support work/life balance. Successful firms have very specific and detailed systems and processes for all tasks performed by all team members. Have someone test each process to ensure they actually work, is a very good idea. 8. Start with the End in Mind Clarity of a desired goal is a catalyst for the straight path to success. You must be clear about the desired end result before you begin any task. This creates the straightest and shortest path to where you want to be. If you are going to invest your valuable time on anything you want to create the highest probability for your success. TIP: It's really a no-brainer. Have a very clear picture – I suggest you outline details on paper (or on your computer) – of the end result. Now break that goal down into sizable chunks. Keep working backwards (end result ---> steps to take now) until you have a general idea of the direction you're going before you get moving. Before taking action, ask yourself this simple question: “What's the next logical step?” or “What can I do, right now, to move closer to the desired end result?” Remember, creating better results isn't always about working harder. Points of struggle or frustration are opportunities to explore easier ways to produce what you desire. Focus and continual action in the right direction will help you work smarter, not harder. Wipe down any fingerprints or splatters. -Tip: Review the floors and carpets for cleaning needs or repairs, check to see if tiles need repair or re-grouting. -Tip: Review your plumbing and electrically systems: need some new light bulbs or could you change to higher efficiency bulbs? Could your drains use a good cleaning? -Tip: Consider all the things in your home that have a filter such as your heating and cooling systems or your humidifiers. The spring is a great time to replace them. -Tip: Take a look at your furniture and furnishings including your drapes and curtains. Does anything need cleaning or repair? Have you decided that something you once loved no longer sparks joy? Remember your taste and needs change over time and things wear out. -Tip: Inspect your kitchen cabinets and your overall home storage. Could your shelves benefit from new shelf liners? Do they need a good wipe down? -Tip: The exterior of your home: Have the gutters cleaned out, paint touched up and windows and doors properly sealed. Consider the springtime activities associated with your landscaping including making sure that your lawnmower and garden tools are clean and in good repair. -Tip: To get started on the annual project, do a walk through inspection first, making a note of everything that needs action. -Tip: Make a project plan: Do you need to purchase supplies? Do you need to delegate a task? Enlist your family and friends or look to hire the right professionals. Give yourself a reasonable time line and address each item in turn. A well-maintained home will bring amazing joy to you and your family! -Tip: Take a look at your Fall and Winter specific items. As always, review by category. Do you have heavy winter clothes, including coats, sweaters, boots or skiwear? Did they bring you joy this winter? Is the future use of these items clear, for example, do you see yourself wearing them again when fall comes? Do they need to be repaired or cleaned? -Tip: Storing Winter gear: We both believe that all your clothes should be kept together regardless of the season, but for many of us, this is just not practical. It’s fine to pack away your seasonal items if necessary as long as you can say for sure that they spark joy! -Tip: Getting ready for Summer! Start by revisiting your vision. What are your hopes and aspirations for the upcoming spring and summer? What activities do you see yourself participating in and enjoying? What are your goals for living your best life this spring and summer? When you get your summer wear out, make certain that all your things are clean and ready to be used. Do you have lawn furniture or summer sporting goods to bring out of hiding? -Tip: Use any outdoor space to do your sorting and joy checking! -Tip: Bring fresh air inside! Marie Kondo talks about opening the windows and letting the fresh air in everyday. This can be really great during the spring mornings as a way to greet the day. -Tip: Spring is a great time to bring fresh flowers inside. Treat yourself! -Tip: After your annual Spring Tidying, invite people over for game nights and barbeques. Plan a capstone event to work towards! 8 Ideas to Help You Work Smarter and Not Harder

If working harder doesn’t feel right, give yourself permission to take a break. 6. Maximize High Energy Cycles Following your body’s natural energy cycles can help you produce better results with less effort. Many firms don’t enforce the creation of systems and processes for all jobs performed. Many team members push back by saying they don’t have enough time to create them and thinking this is their job security. TIP: It’s really a no-brainer. Have a very clear picture – I suggest you outline details on paper (or on your computer) – of the end result. Now break that goal down into sizable chunks. Keep working backwards (end result ---> steps to take now) until you have a general idea of the direction you’re going before you get moving. Before taking action, ask yourself this simple question: “What’s the next logical step?” or “What can I do, right now, to move closer to the desired end result?” Remember, creating better results isn’t always about working harder. Points of struggle or frustration are opportunities to explore easier ways to produce what you desire. Focus and continual action in the right direction will help you work smarter, not harder. 8 Ideas to Help You Work Smarter and Not Harder

Goal Setting & Achievement Podcast: Business|Productivity

Today we are going to talk about 8 Ideas to Help You Work Smarter and Not Harder. Do you think working harder will get you farther? Not necessarily. In this fast-paced society, many professionals are already running at full tilt, so going faster may lead to burn-out, or worse, complete physical and emotional shutdown. So how do you get more done without working harder? This is key to work life balance success. Let’s take a look at these 8 ideas for working smarter, not harder. Therefore, it’s vital that you streamline your daily duties to only the most important tasks that require your focused attention, and those things that only you can do and can’t be done by someone else. TIP: Create a daily schedule of the most important and highest payoff tasks of the day – and stick to it (not always easy but critical to your success). Reduce and eliminate the non-essential duties (the tasks that are either not in alignment with your core values and/or are not income-generating) from your daily schedule. If working harder doesn’t feel right, give yourself permission to take a break. Be it 15 minutes or 1 hour, recognizing your stress signals can help you know when your body and mind need rest. You will perform better and more effectively when you have all your positive energy flowing. 5. Kyle Racki is the founder and CEO of Proposify, a software-as-a-service company currently doing seven figures in annual recurring revenue. Proposify allows companies to make better proposals faster to win more business. When Kyle launched Proposify in 2013, he and his co-founders almost gave up in their first year but despite enormous challenges, they now have 2,500 paying customers. He dedicates most of his time to product design, management and customer support, and doing his best to make Proposify all that it can be. He has been an entrepreneur for over 10 years and has lived with hustle, tenacity and resilience. He shares what he has learnt and what he continues to learn every day because he wants to help other entrepreneurs succeed. He does that through his blogs, videos, speaking and his upcoming book on building a SaaS business. Period in full-time business At age 24, he became a freelancer and a while later started a small web design agency with a guy he had met in the agency world. They ran the business for 5 years before starting Proposify which has been in operations for the last 3 years. They sold the agency in 2014 and also raised a seed round of funding for Proposify. The Journey He never thought he would be an entrepreneur and was in fact terrified of it. Core revenue streams Proposify is a software-as-a-service business. People sign up for a free trial of their proposal software and later they can opt for different pricing plans based on how many proposals one writes. Each pricing plan also has a range of features. So far they have 5,000 paid accounts and retention is very good. Starting out in business Kyle says everything he has done so far in business was not planned. He was freelancing in 2008, doing web design and development, but he got lonely and decided to get a business partner. Together they started their agency. Getting the first set of clients for the agency His business partner already had a few clients but they struggled a lot in trying to get clients. They did well in the first year, maintained low overheads and they got several good projects. They also struggled with their growth after the first year because they couldn't effectively manage the volatility of the business. Core agency products Kyle says that social media and digital marketing were there but very new. They used to do a lot of web design, UX work and online marketing. One of the problems they noted with the agency is that they didn't have a speciality. They never focused on a niche so they were stuck competing with local companies for smaller contracts. Tip: When starting a service business especially a creative one, you need to specialise in one thing. Starting Proposify When he was employed and freelancing, he used to write proposals and as he was freelancing he came up with the idea for a SaaS product for proposal management. He didn't have any coding skills but created its wireframe and shelved it for several years. In the process of running their agency, they started getting tired of chasing clients for payments among other issues. They really desired to transition into a SaaS business and tried out different SaaS products which didn't work. That's when they started discussing the proposal SaaS idea and they decided to go into it. Developing a SaaS product Kyle was not skilled in building a SaaS product but he knew how to create the interface. As they were developing different SaaS products, they built a team of developers internally. They got a grant to hire a developer who worked on the Proposify idea for one year. The developer is now the CTO. They got the grant from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) after they pitched their early stage prototype at an event. They also got an investment from another government-related organization which put in $250,000. Tip: To get funding, go to start-up events where they let you pitch or demo your idea. It's better than looking up

Twitter Smarter Podcast with Madalyn Sklar - The Best Twitter Tips from the Pros

Ross is the founder of Electric Kiwi, a design and marketing firm that specifically caters to the music industry. Based in Scotland, Ross applies his web design expertise to help bands and musicians around the world build an electrifying online presence. He is also the co-host of the podcast Bridge the Atlantic, along with Canadian musician and filmmaker Marcio Novelli, where they interview musicians and creative entrepreneurs. Quick FYI here. I’m in Episode #63 sharing Twitter tips, community building, my life as the leader of GoGirlsMusic and so much more.Click here to listen. Listen in as Ross shares with us his best Twitter tips and talks about the power of personalizing and organizing your Twitter lists. He also shares how a little bit of creativity can build your Twitter presence and increase interaction. Episode Highlights: Ross used to have a business-oriented approach in using Twitter and then realized the importance of being personal. Showing more of yourself gives a more rewarding experience. Use your own photo on your profile instead of a logo to show people that you’re real and to show a bit more of your personality. This equates to more interaction, more retweets, and more favorites. Really good conversations. Keep your feed organized by using Twitter lists. It’s simply a curated group of accounts. Viewing a list will show you a stream of tweets only from the accounts on a list. You can set them up to be either public or private. They can help you monitor your competitors, connect with industry leaders, engage with employees, stay on top of trends and so much more.Click here to learn how to use lists. Tip: Be creative in naming your lists to make it more interesting and to grab people’s attention. Example: I have a list called “Social Media Smarties” rather than “Social Media.” Tip: List names cannot exceed 25 characters and they cannot begin with a number. Tip: To remove yourself from a list, you will need to block the creator of the list. Ross recommends using the Buffer Chrome extension. You’ll love it because it’s so easy to share links, pictures and video from anywhere on the web. Tweetables: “Do not be afraid to be personal and social on Twitter because it is called social media.” “People buy from people.” “It’s not a one-way street. You can’t expect everyone to contact you. You have to be proactive and tweet them.” “I like to keep my feed organized by using lists.” “I use public lists to organize people I follow into different categories or subjects. It helps me keep things focused and organized. Lead Through Strengths
Take This Job & Love It - With Ben Fanning

Lead Through Strengths

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 29, 2016 26:04

This Episode’s Focus on Strengths Ben Fanning shows you how to take the job you’re already in and shape it into something you’ll love. He says to think twice before quitting your job. He cautions you to look carefully before you fire a team member. Why? Well, it’s because both actions can cost as much as buying a new car. That’s a lot of money! And often, the role can be tweaked in a way that brings your talents (or theirs) to the forefront. You’ll find this episode especially useful if you’re not in your “dream” job. Even if you are - things change - and you need to know how to steer those changes toward work you can truly enjoy and thrive in. If you have team members who aren’t performing…well, look closer. Their low productivity might be caused by their job responsibilities not lining with their natural talents. In this episode, you’ll get three cool angles for lining them up: Tool: the StrengthsFinder survey. Books: both the StrengthsFinder 2.0 book and The Quit Alternative. Tips: Ben’s ideas and examples will help you make the best choices for your personal career and your company’s productivity. Since we’re expanding our StrengthsFinder team in Austin, Texas and around the world, this interview was helpful for us too. It reminds us to match each team member to work they are energized by. I can say from personal experience that this feels like magic when it is done well. Seriously. I get giddy several times per week when I see how well matched we are for certain responsibilities. My position as Director of Client Experience at Lead Through Strengths is a perfect partnership for Lisa and me. While she run the delivery side, I run the operations side. I get to curate articles using my Input talent. I combine my Achiever and Responsibility to be sure that every project step happens accurately and as promised. And we’re even re-matching talents as we speak as it relates to podcast duties. Ben’s tips were hitting home for both of us as we recapped the show.   What You’ll Learn Ben starts this episode by telling his personal story. He was miserable at work. And it was literally making him sick. His advice: Start journaling. Writing in a journal helps you notice how you really feel about your job. And look, Ben is not a touchy-feely woo-woo guy if you’re thinking that journaling is for the soft. He’s a practical guy who wants outcomes—and journaling gave him a huge shift. Make the change. Advice he would give to his younger self – Dear Ben… “Your job is to create the job you love” Make it yours. Continually molding yourself to the job erodes your personal mold and you forget who you are. Ben’s steps to create the job you love: Ask - Why am I working in the first place? Knowing the answer to this question can help you during the tough times. Ask - What are the work activities I’m doing that I truly enjoy? Ben calls these items “soul-filling” work. He points out the more you fill your day with these things, the happier you will be. And as you might guess, the happier everyone else will be too (cough cough, ahem, I think Ben’s wife will agree based on the sticky note she left him). TIP: To figure out what you enjoy doing, pull out your calendar and circle the things you are really looking forward to doing. Plan – Assemble your personal game plan. TIPS: Look at the conversations you have, and think about what you’re saying. Look at the trends. Stop advertising the tasks you do well, but don’t enjoy. Why get type cast into a character you despise? Lets say you are great at cleaning toilets. You think it’s gross, and you hate every second of this duty. Would you put it on your resume? No. Surely you wouldn’t. Yet this happens every day because people are in the habit of listing a skill inventory. Start mentioning the things you really enjoy. Tell your manager. Put them on your resume. Add them on LinkedIn. And bring them up in conversations with teammates. Ask clients and teammates to send you comments about things you’ve done well (that you enjoy), and then show those to your boss. After showing these good reviews, ask for the task to be added to your job description. You’ll be surprised at how often you can change your “official” responsibilities if you take on projects that you love—especially when you figure out how to tie that to business outcomes. Listen for the business challenges your company is facing, and find ways to solve those issues. Solve these problems using the activities you love. This way, you’re helping the company while making yourself happier. When you’re feeling stressed or you’re thinking about quitting your job, remember that you can improve your existing job. With some effort, you can shape it into what you want it to be. So go claim your talents, and share them with the world!   Resources of the Episode Ben has made it easy for you to get even more tips to improve your current job. [00:00:15] Today, you’re going to love this guest. If you think your job is just, “Bleh,” or if you dread your commute, or if you beat your alarm clock a little too hard when you pound on the snooze button every morning, if you just feel bored and apathetic at work, today’s guest will help you change all of that. [00:00:33] His advice about not quitting your job inspired today’s theme song. Do you remember that old one from Johnny Paycheck “Take This Job and Shove It?” There are also a couple of versions by the Dead Kennedys and David Allan Coe. Well, today’s guest will tweak those lyrics for you. [00:00:49] Ben Fanning will forever change that song for you into “Take This Job and Love it.” Ben Fanning: [00:00:57] Whoo. Thanks, Lisa. Heck of an introduction. I did not know that the Dead Kennedys had a version of that song. I’m making a note and I will check that out immediately following our interview. Lisa Cummings: [00:01:07] Yeah, just make sure it’s not first thing in the morning because their version is pretty intense. It’s like, “Take this job and shove it!” Ben Fanning: [00:01:14] Fantastic. Lisa Cummings: [00:01:15] [laughs] So, Ben, I invited you to this show after reading your book The Quit Alternative and I just love how you help people create and reshape their work inside of their existing job without having to quit. Now, before the audience hears how to recreate their job, I want to know how this all came to be. What drove you to figure it out? Ben Fanning: [00:01:38] Yeah, Lisa, I’ll be happy to share that here. I grew up with big dreams with a corner office. I really envisioned myself in a big city in this office surrounded by glass and having that moment where I’ve gotten on my personal jet as a CEO, I flew back to my hometown in Alexander City, Alabama, and they would actually name a road after me, right? I had this big vision of that. [00:02:01] And so four different cities, four companies, four different jobs, I finally ended up in Manhattan and so I always was sort of taking the job for the next promotion opportunity. But once I had the job in Manhattan, in a corner office, it wasn’t what I thought it was going to be. The hours were longer than ever, there was more pressure and stress, and every night I would find myself coming home feeling totally exhausted, drained, burned out, and just unloading all these complaints about work and my boss and my clients on my wife. And she was just sort of my sounding board, and I think it was starting to drive her a little nuts. [00:02:41] One day she was out of town and the stress was really mounting, in the middle of the night I woke up with a pressure of a bowling ball in my chest. I have a family history of heart attacks, I thought, “Oh, my God, I am having a heart attack. I’m in my 30s, how could I be having a heart attack?” But I ran in the hallway, gotten a cab, went to the hospital, and the doctor comes out and says, “Relax, Mr. Fanning, you’re not having a heart attack. You’re having a panic attack.” And I thought, “A panic attack? What in the world?” [00:03:15] And he said, “Ben, you need to learn to relax a little bit, and take some time and learn to laugh a little bit too.” Now, I was like, “This does not qualify as medical advice,” and I just walked out, never return to that office. And, honestly, things didn’t get much better, Lisa, after that. But my wife, in her intuitiveness, one day I woke up and she had left a Post-It note on my bag that had the name of a therapist and a phone number, and an appointment time, proactively set an appointment with a therapist. [00:03:48] Now, I don’t know how many of your listeners are from the southeast and are male, but if you’re a Southern male, the idea of a therapist is pretty close to the enjoyment of maybe being stung by a thousand bees. So it’s not a very fun experience. I was like, “Thank, God, it wasn’t a Dear John Post-It note,” you know. It’s like, “Okay, this is a little help that she’s just trying to reach out and give me here.” I actually went to that appointment, and I would trudge from our place on 86th Street in the Upper West Side uptown and I would go see this therapist once a week. [00:04:21] And, Lisa, I would walk in there and the guy would just sit there, he barely said anything. He would just listen to me, and I would just rant and just complain at this guy about how bad work was, and I actually would walk out feeling pretty good. I would feel a little bit better when I walked in but as soon as I walked in the office I just felt sort of pulled back in to this mire and this dread and just really this resentment and anger, and then still feeling exhausted at the end of the day. [00:04:50] And then one day, something really big happened, I walked in to see my therapist, sat down and I started just complaining about everything, and he stopped me mid-sentence, and he said, “Ben, you know what your problem is?” I just felt myself, just like my draw dropped, just in shock because this guy is finally going to earn what I’m paying him, he’s going to tell me what my problem is. And I’m just sitting there, and he says, “Ben, you hate your job. There’s no pill for it. It’s not a place for me to work with you anymore. You need to go off, and you need to figure this out for yourself.” [00:05:27] And I looked at him square in the eye and I said, “Are you firing me?” And he said, “Yes.” Lisa Cummings: [00:05:33] Wow. Ben Fanning: [00:05:34] That was the wakeup call for me that day, and that day I didn’t go in to work. I just walked around Manhattan all afternoon. And sitting there in reflection of what he’d said, what I really discovered was that I went and thought about all the different jobs I had, all the different companies I worked for, and the common element was me. For some reason, that was a real shock. I was the common element. And the quote came to me, and it’s something I’d read somewhere along the lines, was, “No matter where you go, there you are.” Lisa Cummings: [00:06:09] Oh, yeah. Ben Fanning: [00:06:11] That the problem, ultimately, started with me and so I had to make some personal changes and start thinking through this. So I started journaling, and one of the things that came out of that when I was working through The Quit Alternative, I was going back to my notes, and I discovered this note that I had written to myself back in college. Like, if I was to talk to Ben before he got his career started, what would that tidbit of advice have been? And it’s this, “Dear Ben, your job is to create the job you love.” That’s the whole thing. Lisa Cummings: [00:06:46] Interesting. Ben Fanning: [00:06:47] When I left college it was all about finding a job. And this mindset of finding is actually a really big distraction because you’re fitting yourself into the job out there. So you’re sort of molding yourself to the job. Once you mold yourself enough, you start to lose yourself in your career and your job, and so it’s a really important thing to, just as this podcast says, really understand what your strengths are, understand the work that doesn’t feel like work for you. If your listeners doesn’t know what that is we can talk more about that and maybe get more into that. [00:07:25] But it’s important to know that everyone has work that doesn’t feel like work. And whatever that is for you is a direction that you want to start steering your career, and using that is really the backbone of creating the job you love right where you are. Otherwise, you’re just going to be playing the lottery as to what work ends up getting on your plate. [00:07:47] And another question that comes up about this a lot, Lisa, is this whole idea of, “Well, I took a job that I really like and they sold me on it,” or, “It was like this when I started, and now it kind of stinks. Now, I don’t like it anymore.” Lisa Cummings: [00:08:01] Right. Ben Fanning: [00:08:02] “And things have changed.” And the usefulness of this creating perspective is you expect that, right? You expect the environment to change, you will get a new boss, but if you’re always in this mindset of creating the job you love, you’re always going to be fine tuning your work activities, negotiating on your own behalf, campaigning for the work you love, just start to bringing it back to sort of net neutral in a positive-career direction for yourself that feels authentic. Lisa Cummings: [00:08:32] I really love the personal accountability in it because no matter the business situations that change around you, if you’re always shaping your career toward your strengths you’re going to feel more energized and engaged with your work. So let’s say someone’s listening to the show, Ben, and they’re digging this idea you have, yet it feels like a farfetched idea to them. Say it seems like too big of a ship to turn the way their career is going today. How do you break this down? How do you start taking action? Ben Fanning: [00:09:03] I like to think about sort of the Simon Sinek approach starting with why in the first place. So I usually just try to ask the question, “Well, why are you working in the first place?” That can really reveal a lot of powerful insights for people. Probably the most important thing that I find is when you’re burning the candle on both ends, or you’re really stressed out, it is so helpful to have a reminder to yourself of why you’re working in the first place. [00:09:34] Are you working because you’re in a position where you’re developing yourself in skills and you’re planning for this to lead to something bigger and better for yourself down the road? Are you working to pay the bills for your family? Have you been working in the same job for a long time and you really love your co-workers, and you know maybe one of them is sick and out, and you’re pulling the load on behalf of the team? Now, you remind yourself of why you’re working, and that can help you get through some really hard times. And so I think in a very fundamental level, understanding why you work in the first place is really important to explore. [00:10:12] When I was talking about Simon Sinek, just sort of like the CliffNotes version is Simon Sinek sort of thought through this thing called the golden circle, and his idea is, “Well, hey, maybe you know what you do, you may know how you do your job, but almost no one is thinking about why they’re doing their job in the first place.” And then I think, really, like a second helpful thing to think about, and it’s a little bit different than why, is, “What are the work activities you’re doing?” One thing on their calendar during the day that they actually really enjoy doing. And I like to talk about that as soul-filling work. [00:10:46] So that’s the work that you invest yourself in, and after you invest your energy and focus on that, you actually receive that back, so it’s sort of like a positive or return on investment. The more that your day is full of those kinds of activities, the better you’re going to feel after work, the more energy you’re going to have to work out, to cook, to be with your friends and family, to not conk out in front of the TV, to actually feel like you want to do something after work. And this sort of compounds and leads to positive results in your career, as well as for the organization, the boss, and the team that you work with every day. Lisa Cummings: [00:11:23] What a great visual. It makes me think of soul food. I’m thinking of okra right now. Ben Fanning: [00:11:30] Oh, yeah. Well, I live in Charleston so we really like the soul food concept. Lisa Cummings: [00:11:34] Yeah, and I like how you could take your career okra in small bites. Your approach really makes it digestible and realistic for people. I joke around with my clients all the time and tell them that they look like they’re waiting around at a passion lost and found counter, like one day someone will magically recover this thing in them and say, “Oh, here it is. Here’s that passion you’ve been longing to find all this time. It was here all along.” [00:12:02] And what I tell them is, “Look, stop that madness. You are a complex human being, and you’re good at a lot of things, and you would enjoy a lot of things.” And instead, to use your soul-filling idea, Ben, “Your soul can be filled by lots of things, so stop beating yourself up because you weren’t born with the clarity that you’re a prodigy who knew from the age of three.” Ben Fanning: [00:12:22] You know, I’m totally with you on that, because I used to believe that. I’m like, “Man, I want to find my passion.” I know once I find out that I’m passionate about walking around in a Mickey Mouse suit around Disney World everything will be right. Lisa Cummings: [00:12:38] Are you going to dress up like a princess? Ben Fanning: [00:12:40] Umm, you know you never know. I mean, maybe. That might be a way to be passionate, too Lisa Cummings: [00:12:45] You have to stand correct through the whole time. Ben Fanning: [00:12:47] At Disney World recently, those people as princesses seem to be very passionate about their work standing around. If you don’t even want to go through that, pull out your calendar for the next two days, and just put a red circle around the ones you’re looking forward to, as simple as that. Just put it on the ones that you’re looking forward to, because that’s a clue of something that maybe you could be passionate about. Maybe if you have more of that work in your job to look forward to you’d be more excited to get to work. [00:13:15] So that sort of clueing you into that important self-awareness, and then once you thought about why you got these motivating work activities identified, then you can start to assemble your personal game plan, or playbook, from moving more in that direction and taking action. Lisa Cummings: [00:13:32] What a great technique for paying attention to the things you’re looking forward to on your calendar, and rather than just doing them, like you usually would, actually thinking about how you can shape your job with those responsibilities. I talk a lot about this in my StrengthsFinder training, as well. It’s part of paying attention to what fuels you so you can get more of it. Ben Fanning: [00:13:53] I like it. I like it. It is the best investment of time. Most research, self-assessments, I try to be a little bit careful because sometimes people can sort of over-rely on them, just like looking at their work activities, that’s just sort of practical. But I think you can be such a great kick-start for like where to look. And if you’ve already put some of these pieces together, it can be a real validating thing. [00:14:17] One of the things I like about StrengthsFinder is that quick assessment that’s printed out at the end, it gives you ideas for who you might be great collaborators with, that have different strengths. That, for me, is Disney magic. It’s like, “Hey, Pooh Bear, you need to work with Pinocchio, or you need to work with Tigger, because Tigger can bounce up high and get honey out of a honey tree.” Lisa Cummings: [00:14:44] Ben, you are cracking me up. Okay, guys, you’re probably listening, thinking, “Wow, this guy really likes his Disney metaphors.” So now I’ll let you in on our inside joke, and tell you why he’s using Pooh Bear to demonstrate who you should partner up with at work to tap into your complementary talents. See, Ben recently went on vacation at Disney and I challenged him to work a Disney character into the interview without it feeling too off the wall, so that’s why he found his passion in dressing up as a Disney princess and teaming up with Tigger because their talents were complementary. [00:15:20] So even though you heard our silliness here, this is an important place where everything comes together. Ben started with that Simon Sinek concept where you identify your “why,” then you do things like his super practical calendar exercise to consider “what” activities energize you at work, then you use StrengthsFinder to dig into the “how.” It shows you how you think, how you execute, how you relate to people. So combine all of those and you’re tapping into a seriously powerful start to creating, or reshaping, the job you’re already in today. Ben Fanning: [00:15:51] Yes, I love that. That’s a cool combination. Lisa Cummings: 00:15:54] Now, what if you’ve been locking yourself into other people’s molds for a lot of years, and you don’t even know what it feels like to design your career for yourself? What if you’re executing on old belief patterns that will take you back into a rut and you don’t even know it? Ben Fanning: [00:16:12] Yeah, a really simple way to do that is stop advertising your accomplishments, doing the work that you don’t like to do, or the draining work. Lisa Cummings: [00:16:20] Yeah. Ben Fanning: [00:16:22] It’s funny, I have a friend that’s an accountant and he was bragging that he got notified by LinkedIn, he’s like, “I’m in the top 5% of viewed profiles on LinkedIn.” “Okay, well, cool. Well, congratulations on that.” But I knew he doesn’t really like being an accountant. Lisa Cummings: [00:16:42] Uh-oh. Ben Fanning: [00:16:43] And so I’m like, “You realize all these people are coming to your LinkedIn profile because they’re searching for accounting people.” And I’m like, “You don’t sound like you’re really happy doing traditional accounting work.” He’s since made some changes, but I think we all can fall into this trap so easily. People are sharing at staff meetings, or wherever, all these accomplishments on stuff they don’t enjoy doing. And what ends up happening is it’s like you’re a burnout work magnet, and I was like this for a long time. [00:17:15] One of my specialties early on in my career was managing this customs compliance team, and I was doing some logistics and supply chain work, and that group just sort of fell under the group I was managing. I was just amazed at the amount of work that that would attract. And the more results we had, the more work we had to do in that, and it wasn’t really helping my workday very much. [00:17:39] So I really thought through again the work that I was advertising that I enjoyed, and started to share some of those wins. The first step is to start to minimize that, and the first is – for everybody listening to day – to think about these few work activities that you enjoy and then start highlighting them, whether it’s your resume, your LinkedIn profile, or whether that’s in your weekly staff meeting, start to share it. [00:18:05] And, for me, years later, I discovered that one of the soul-filling activities for me was around presenting and training and mentoring other people, and that was not part of my job. It was a small facet but not a very big part, and certainly not mentorship. But what I did was, I started doing some mentoring of employees and then I would ask them to send a quick email to me and say, “Hey, that was helpful,” or, “Thank you for your insights on that.” And that teed up an excellent email that I would share with my boss. Lisa Cummings: [00:18:38] Oh, very clever, Ben. Ben Fanning: [00:18:40] Like, “Hey, here’s third-party validation that this other work that I’m doing that’s not really part of my every day job description is adding value.” And the next year I was able to get mentoring added on my annual review, so that was something I actually got evaluated for and so it became part of my job, and then I applied a very similar thing. And this is sort of expanding, but I’ll roll with it here. [00:19:11] So there was a situation where I was presenting and enjoying this stuff, but I didn’t really know what to do with it other than just presenting at my weekly staff meeting. So what I did was I listened to the problems that our group was struggling with which was getting closure on projects. These projects our group was involved in, they were stretching out way past the deadline and costing everybody money and getting the boss really ticked off. [00:19:36] And so I said, “Hey, what if I do a little lunch-and-learn training program around getting closure on big projects? Just like, how do you finish that project that has been hanging out there forever?” And I thought my boss was going to kiss me, he was so excited. He’s like, “That sounds great.” And so, suddenly, it’s my job to present ideas that I’ve been thinking about to our group. And the beautiful part was after that he shared those four modules that I did with somebody else, and so I got to go present it to a different team. And, literally, it started just to take off from there. [00:20:15] The funny thing is I would say that was one of those big inflection points where it sort of steamrolled into, “Well, hey, I’m going to blog a little bit. I’m going to share that blog.” And fast-forward years later, I’ve got a number one bestselling book that involves a lot of these stories and strategies that all came out of that experience. [00:20:37] That is the sort of thing, I think, that can happen if you start really small, acknowledge what’s motivating you, start to highlight those accomplishments, and then have that attract more of the work. And, really, that’s what happened for me and a lot of my clients, it’s the more you advertise the stuff you like, it is like a magnet. You start to get more of that work in your workday and you can sort of watch the evolution and build more momentum in that direction for your career. Lisa Cummings: [00:21:06] Oh, yeah. This is so practical. And it’s going to be a huge insight for people because it’s not just about finding things that energize you, it’s also about tying them to a business problem. If you can solve something that’s causing someone’s pain and enjoy the work at the same time, you’re going to get that kind of work thrown at you. No wonder your boss wanted to kiss you, Ben. [00:21:28] So, now, okay, flip it around. Here’s a dark side of that, I think, people might worry about when they’re listening. Do you think there’s a risk that you can get so much more work thrown at you, even if it’s good work, that you end up working an extra 10 hours a week, and kind of kill the upside of it all by piling on more and more? Ben Fanning: [00:21:51] Yeah, and I think it’s so important, like you said, people could say, “Well, I don’t want to do more work,” or, “That’s too much.” If it feels like too much, I mean, in my opinion, is not to do it, because that’s going to come across to whoever you’re working with on this, and it’s going to come across as a have-to-do versus a get-to-do. So carve out a really small action or small lunch-and-learn, 30 minutes, on a topic that’s useful to the company, and the team, but that you actually want to do. [00:22:20] Good grief, if you don’t want to do it they’re going to know. And it works in other ways too. I thought of the lunch-and-learn because that’s a really personal example but if that’s not your bag then let’s think of something else. Maybe you like doing financial analysis and you really are passionate about that. You can offer to show somebody how to do an analysis, or do it for someone. Or maybe you like to automate tasks in Excel. If that’s you then, first, please call me. I like that. [00:22:51] But you can just start with what you like to do and what’s interest to you and start to sort of bring that into work in some capacity and just watch what happens. Watch the magic. Lisa Cummings: [00:23:04] Ha-ha, watch the Disney magic. And, okay, as you’re creating these new responsibilities in your job, as long as you’re solving a business problem, you can negotiate it so that as you add two or three new responsibilities that solve a big business problem you’re also deleting other ones. That way people won’t feel like it’s becoming an out-of-control workload. Ben Fanning: [00:23:29] Yeah, and you can go deep. I love thinking about how these things can help the organization, and because that’s really an important thing, I think a lot of employees when they think about this stuff, they’re thinking about “me,” right? They’re not thinking about the organization, and so the art and the real trick is to make sure it is impacting the organization, because that’s how you can even go further with your career and your job and the benefit to the company. There’s really always a way to tie it back in some positive form. Lisa Cummings: [00:23:59] All right, everyone, you heard it here. Now it’s your turn to go solve a problem that lives in your strengths zone. So go find some soul-filling work like this Southern have been, who got fired from his therapist in Manhattan because his work was sucking his soul away, and he turned all that situation into something great. If he can do it, you can do it. Ben Fanning: [00:24:21] [laughs] Lisa Cummings: [00:24:23] So when they want more of you, obviously, they’ll read your book The Quit Alternative. Also, tell them how to get more Ben Fanning in their lives. Ben Fanning: [00:24:33] You guys go on over to BenFanning.com, and right now you can go over there, I have a report, it’s called The Catastrophic Cost of Quitting. Don’t fire another employee or resign your job until you’ve reviewed this report. Basically, it’s a really quick review on the cost of quitting. If you’re thinking about quitting your job, it breaks down the cost, it actually shows you how the uncovered costs for them can equal more than the cost of a new car. [00:25:02] So it’s not that you shouldn’t think about quitting ever but if you’re ever going to do it make sure you take the same calculated risk and go to this calculations like you would with a big financial investment, and from a company side, decreasing disengagement. Disengaged employees are two and half times more likely to quit, and you look at a 10,000-person organization, you could buy a couple of Super Bowl commercials if you could have other impacting engagements. So think about that. This reports walks you through that over at BenFanning.com, and I invite you to get it and enjoy. Lisa Cummings: [00:25:38] Enjoy, you guys. Go grab it. You’ll love reading Ben’s work. It’s such good perspective. It’s not about quitting the job, it’s about taking accountability for your career and creating one you love. So get on out there, go claim your strengths, and share them with the world.
