147: Nataly Kelly: Making global feel local through the power of marketing localization

Humans of Martech

What's up everyone, today we have the pleasure of sitting down with Nataly Kelly, CMO at Zappi. Summary: Global expansion is a wild process that connects brands to the unique vibe of each market, it's not just creating a website or translating content. Every market brings its own needs, from how audiences navigate sites to what resonates visually and emotionally. Moving into international territories means showing up prepared, with a localization strategy that's flexible and has a ton of local insight. Marketing Ops and RevOps both play a key role in localization as a strategic partner, organizing data and decision-making to fuel growth across departments. About NatalyNataly started her career as an interpreter at AT&T and later co-founded a research and consulting company which was acqui-hired by her biggest customer where she would serve as Director of Product DevelopmentShe later held Chief Research Officer and VP of Market Development titles at a market research firm and a translation and localization companyNataly then made the mega move to HubSpot as VP of Marketing where she would spend nearly 8 years – involved in all aspects of full-funnel marketing globally, including International Ops and LocalizationShe then moved to Rebrandly as Chief Growth Officer leading sales, marketing and product Nataly's also an author, she's published 3 books and 1 coming out next year, she has a Newsletter called ‘Making Global Work'Today, Nataly's moved into her 4th SaaS marketing leadership role as CMO at Zappi–the leading consumer insights platform Why LinkedIn Works for Building a NewsletterNataly decided on LinkedIn for her newsletter with one primary goal: reaching more people, fast. In marketing, there's always talk of “owning your audience,” but for Nataly, the built-in reach LinkedIn offers outweighed the usual risks. Sure, LinkedIn could shift its algorithm or start favoring video, but Nataly isn't fazed. She believes adaptability is more valuable than control. “If LinkedIn ever moves entirely to video, I might reconsider,” she says. “But for now, it's a writer's platform, and I'm a writer.”What really sold her, though, is LinkedIn's “triple play” effect. Each time she publishes a newsletter, her audience doesn't just see it once—they get three reminders. The content appears in their feed, triggers a platform notification, and even lands in their email inbox. This multi-touchpoint delivery isn't just convenient; it significantly boosts her visibility. In a crowded digital space, those three nudges are powerful. And the best part? It doesn't take any extra work on her end. For Nataly, this setup is gold: “If I can reach my audience in three different ways without doing three times the work, I'm in.”On top of that, LinkedIn's algorithm has started indexing her posts for keywords, so they pop up in search results long after she hits “publish.” Nataly likes this longevity. She's seen her posts gather momentum over time, which reassures her that LinkedIn isn't likely to abandon text-based content anytime soon. This layered exposure works in her favor, especially since she's already built a solid following on LinkedIn. Her audience is naturally expanding, without any additional ad spend or email list management. This approach ties back to a guiding principle Nataly picked up at HubSpot: follow the growth. When a channel shows traction, commit fully and ride the momentum. LinkedIn's growth trajectory fits perfectly with her goals, allowing her to spend her time effectively—engaging with followers, creating relevant content, and letting the platform do the heavy lifting. “I see LinkedIn growing, and I'm here for the ride,” she says. While email newsletters and other platforms might come into play in the future, right now, LinkedIn is her sweet spot. It's a low-maintenance option that lets her connect with her community directly, on the platform where she's already active. She's writing for the sake of sharing knowledge, and LinkedIn offers a direct, hassle-free way to reach a broad audience without splitting her focus across multiple channels.Key takeaway: For marketers aiming to maximize reach, LinkedIn's multi-touchpoint setup and organic audience growth make it an ideal platform. When traction is the goal, LinkedIn's notification, email, and feed distribution offer valuable, low-effort exposure—perfect for those who want to focus on content, not channel management.Understanding the Nuances of Going GlobalNataly makes a clear distinction between "going global" and "going local," a distinction that goes beyond simply putting content online for everyone to see. Launching a website, or even setting up a LinkedIn profile, can technically connect a person to a global audience. But creating an intentional, local connection demands a specific approach, one that carefully considers language, cultural context, and user experience. For Nataly, globalization isn't just about reaching people across borders—it's about meeting those audiences where they are, with language and content that resonate. Her insights stem from years of experience, including her work at HubSpot, where she developed a practical framework to explain these concepts to teams across the company. She found that simplifying these ideas into one-word definitions helped cut through the confusion. For example, “internationalization” is about adapting the technical side, like making code accessible to different languages and regions. This step ensures the foundational structure can support localized content, but it's just the beginning.Translation, Nataly explains, isn't about directly swapping words. True translation involves adapting the message itself. For one audience, a particular phrase might evoke excitement; for another, it might fall flat or even offend. Nataly emphasizes that effective translation reaches beyond literal words to convey a message that feels native to each audience, maintaining intent, tone, and cultural relevance.Localization goes further, adapting the entire user experience for specific markets. It's not just about making text comprehensible but ensuring every interaction—from navigation to design—feels intuitive for users in diverse regions. For instance, a website optimized for American users may assume all visitors speak English, but this model doesn't apply universally. In countries like Canada, India, or across the EU, multi-language realities complicate navigation. This level of adaptation requires deep cultural and technical knowledge to avoid common pitfalls and create a seamless experience.Globalization, however, is the ultimate adaptation, demanding a complete rethinking of the framework itself. Nataly notes that one of the biggest challenges is getting teams to shift from a single-market mindset to a truly global perspective. A platform initially designed for one language or culture may struggle when stretched to fit a multilingual or multicultural user base. Globalization requires a build-it-right-from-the-start approach, anticipating diverse user needs and ensuring the platform can expand without limitations.Key takeaway: Successful globalization is about more than just reaching an international audience; it requires intentionally adapting every layer—from code to experience—to create content that resonates locally while remaining accessible globally.Strategic Timing for Going GlobalWhen HubSpot considered expanding internationally, it wasn't about leaping into new markets; it was about waiting until the timing and resources aligned. Nataly recalls that CEO Brian Halligan was deliberate, even drafting a Harvard Business Review piece outlining Hu...

In this episode, host Ricardo Berris talks to Ankit Shah, a growth marketer, marketing automation expert, and creator of the short link tool, Lin-K, which allows you to shorten URLs. There are other tools available such as Rebrandly,  Tiny URL, and Bitly but Lin-K does more. In addition to shortening URLs and making them more powerful, easy-to-remember links, the site collects data about its customers and their behaviors. Examples of the data collected include location, the device that was used, which browser was used. As a user, once you get your shortened URL, you have options. For example: -Give your link a custom name -Set a link expiration -Create a protected link so only people with the password can access the link -Geo-targeting options to redirect users to a separate URL for a particular country -Device targeting -Create link bundles, splash pages, and overlay pages -Profile building  -This tool has a pixel so you can include your Facebook pixel, Google AdWords, Excel, LinkedIn, etc. By retargeting the audience and advertisements, it can help reduce your marketing budget.  So who can benefit from a service like Lin-K? -Marketers of all sizes, including affiliate and digital marketers -Influencers -Artists -Corporations -YouTubers Everyone can benefit from this tool and you don't have to be tech-savvy to apply it right away. You simply create your account and once on the dashboard, you just paste your long URL into the space provided and you'll be given options as to how you want to complete your new, shortened URL. Now you can use your shortened URL for a PDF document, website, or blog that is listed the way you want it to show up.  The features listed are currently free but advanced are available for a fee. If you need to link this to other tools, an API (application programming interface) can be provided or you can use a tool like Zapier. About the founder of Lin-K: As an entrepreneur, Ankit was not deterred by failures. Upon graduating with a degree in software engineering, he would experience multiple startup failures. The failures came from a lack of experience and resources, as well as financial problems. What he discovered in the failures, however, were his strengths: marketing and marketing automation. It was leaning into his strengths, and the strengths of others, that allowed him to start developing tools that would help in his endeavors as well.   As a small business owner, learn from Ankit: Let your failures be a stepping stone toward your goals, not your deterrent. Marketers know to keep testing to see what works and what doesn't.   MUSIC CREDIT: Beat Your Competition – Vibe Tracks (No Copyright Music) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bll5zsOGNKA&feature=youtu.be

It's to know what is working for your audience. Sure you can look at your downloads but there are other ways to look at engagement. Today in episode 738 I dig deeper. Website Traffic How many website visitors are you getting? You may be surprised that your top ten pages on your website are the same as the top ten episodes of your podcast? Why, you might have more keywords in your notes that attract google. People may be linking to your episode which can boost "Google Juice" (your rankings). WHAT ABOUT TRANSCRIPTS? I was listening to The Business of Podcasting a great podcast with Charlie Valher from Valher media (Charlie will be on this show in the future), and he was interview Stephan Spencer who is one THE SEO people on the planet. While we often say, "This person wrote the book on..." Stephen actually wrote the book on SEO (Search Engine Optimization) The Art of SEO. It's 994 pages. Here is what he had to say about transcripts: But the key thing here is you're creating something in an audio format and although Google is getting better at taking that audio and doing something amazing with it, like turning that into searchable content on its own, you can't just rely on that. A lot of people don't have time to listen to podcasts and they like to just scan through articles, but nobody wants to read a transcript. Who's gonna get excited about reading a transcript with a bunch of the back and forth banter and not cutting to the chase? Having an article made out of the transcript, however, is a very powerful strategy and if you have an hour-long show or a half-hour-long show, that's a lot of textual content. -Stephen Spencer the Business of Podcasting show. Transcribed by https://otter.ai Google Analytics Google Analytics is a great free tool that enables you to pull insights about your website visitors. The best part is its free. It is very robust. There are ways you can flatten the learning curve with Google Analytics. One is to take the free course(s) offered by Google. One of my favorite tools that takes that data and creates easy to understand reports is Monster Insights. Check out the video on Monster Insights Tracking Clicks In WordPress, many people use a plugin that is free/premium called Pretty Links. There is a free version and the premium version starts at $49/year. It's been downloaded over 2.5 million times. Thirsty affiliates is a very similar plugin for about the same price ($49/year). If you want something even more powerful (especially for affiliate links) check out Lasso which can even check the stock at Amazon for your links, and much more. It starts at $19/month. URL Shortener Pro is only $19. The advantage of these plugins is they enable you to reinforce your brand's website while making an easy to remember. For example, www.schoolofpodcasting.com/subscribe will take you to my subscription page. If someone asks me where to subscribe, I have one link with all the apps. If someone asks about the Podpage service, they can go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/podpage. For my Patreon account that I promote on the Ask the Podcast Coach show I use www.askthepodcastcoach.com/awesome What if you don't use WordPress? How Do You Track Clicks? bit.ly Many people use bit.ly which I did, but I found something that really changed my opinion of bit.ly. While you can setup a bit.ly link to point at a long URL that makes it easier to remember if later you want to change that link - you can't. This is why I started researching this topic. Then on August 13th, they added the feature to update a link see announcement. However, you have to pay for this feature ($35/month). Rebrandly One company called Rebrandly was started based on the pain point of "I can't change my destination URL in Bitly." With Rebrandly you can have up to 500 links and have up to 5000 clicks per month for free. You can have up to 5 custom domains. If you're looking for a free tool to track clicks this seems to be the tool. They have 550,000 happy customers. If You Want to Do More Track Clicks (Marketing?) Click.org Click.org allows you to do A/B Split testing, and you can have one link for people in one part of the world, and another link used for others in a different part. For marketing people it adds the tracking pixel. So now when you send someone to a website that is not yours, you can add a pixel to retarget them. This is much more of a marketing tool and may be overkill for those who want to just have a link to give to their audience. Pixle.me Pixle.me is all about retargeting. It is the primary feature you see when you go to their website. For example, you could send people to a post on Medium and then they would see your Facebook ads when they go about the Internet. They have a tool where you can send someone to an Amazon site (for example) and make YOUR email pop up box appear. While they have some fun marketing tools if you want to change the destination URL (the feature that launched this investigation) it will cost you $24 a month. I did like some of their tools, and when it comes to marketing and tracking (which somewhat keeps your brand in front of your audience) it seemed to be a clear winner. What You Can Learn? Here is a list of things you might want to track: A link in your email signature Links in your emails Links in your show notes. Your Instagram URL (instead of using some third-party service) Links to your subscribe buttons A general idea of how engaged your audience is with your content. Check How Far People Are Listening To Your Episode What do Apple, Google, Spotify, and Stitcher all have in common? They all provide extra stats that show you how far your audience is listening. Also, if you are using Anchor and allowed them to submit your show to directories "for you" you have given away this option (they don't tell you that when they offer to do you a "favor"). Here is a video from Apple Advertiser Practice Run Last week I talked about the Zoom Podtrack P4, and 84 people clicked on it (11% of my audience at the time), but nobody purchased it. As many people feel that 3-5% click rate is "great" this seems to be a very interesting product for my audience. My feeling is due to it not being available yet (and only available for pre-order) this may mess up my affiliate stats. By using an affiliate link, it has built-in click tracking and you can see how many units were sold. Amazon Associates is the largest affiliate program. The best thing is to find a product you like, and then see if the word "affiliates" or "partners" is at the bottom of their website. Sign up and promote it. As its a favorite product of yours, your sales pitch will be more heartfelt. Most of us share a lot of links these days. Whether we are emailing or texting someone a link, sharing on social media or putting a link in a blog post or whitepaper—links are pretty ubiquitous. But many people don’t stop to think about the wasted opportunities of just sending plain, verbatim links. The most obvious issue with a lot of links is their length. When links are really long, they just look bad and often have a bunch of random letters, numbers and symbols in them. But aside from simple aesthetics, naked links are inefficient. From a business standpoint, you could be getting more out of the links you share. For example, you should always know at a minimum whether a link got clicked on. Even better, you could know exactly who clicked on a given link—if you are using tracking in many email campaign systems, for example. Beyond just tracking clickthoughs though, there are other ways to really enhance your links. A few of these include: 1 - Making them shorter — this is the most obvious benefit, which makes links look better and contain fewer characters 2 - Branding your branding by using your domain name or a variation of your domain name 3 - Adding retargeting codes to any link you send — this means being able to later serve ads to people who have clicked on your enhanced links 4 - Adding information that can tell you exactly where your click links came from, using the bizarre sounding Urchin Tracking Module or UTM parameters. By the name, the name Urchin came from a company that was the predecessor to Google Analytics that was used by marketers to track the effectiveness of online marketing campaigns across various traffic sources and publishing media. 5 - For Ecommerce purposes, share links that properly attribute affiliate sales in multiple countries, such as Amazon affiliate links There are many tools to accomplish this type of link-sharing goodness. Five of my favorites, which I will include in the show notes of this episode on Anchor.fm/brandonuttley include: 1- Google Analytics UTM Builder - a free Chrome extension - https://geni.us/chromeutm 2 - Bitly - https://bitly.com 3 - Geni.us 4 - Rebrandly - https://rebrandly.com 5 - Sniply - https://snip.ly I hope you’ve learned a few things about the inherent power of link sharing and that you will check out some of these tools to make your links look and perform better!

Our newest product at Property Management Mastermind is the Business Development Toolkit. In 2017, RentWerx organically grew by over 360 homes. In 2018, we’re on pace to grow another 500 homes. And best of all, we’ve done all of this without going out to meet the people and earn the business one door at a time. Tune in to learn more, or check out the toolkit online! If you aren’t completely satisfied with the product, we’ll give you a 100% rebate. Today, I’ll be joined by Andy Wallace from zInspector. We’ll dive into what zInspector is and what it offers, while also exploring some deep technical stuff. It was a great conversation, and I got a lot out of it! One of the things Andy mentions is Rebrandly, which is really helpful for things like links to videos for inspections and security deposit itemizations. Even if you don’t end up using zInspector, check out Rebrandly to see if it fits your needs. I’ve known Andy for years and talked to him many times. He’s been in the NARPM community for a long time offering property management inspection software. Andy has been managing a company in some capacity for years, and created zInspector because he had problems with needing to take tens of thousands of photos over a few days. The program solved Andy’s problems, and those of many other people both inside and outside the property management industry. In fact, right now, about half of Andy’s clients are actually contractors rather than property managers. Pool inspection companies, roofers, and landscapers, for example, have basically the same problems, which zInspector solves. One of the most significant parts of Andy’s company is that they believe that your data belongs to you, and you should be able to get it out. For example, all of their reports are designed to be easily printable, which is a difficult feature to find among their main competitors. And if you think you’ll never need a printed report, trust me, it’s important for court! You may also need printed reports for loans or proof of income, for example. Another fantastic feature is that each piece of information (such as each photo) is handled individually, so in the rare case that you may have an error, you’ll only lose one piece of information instead of an entire report. If you’ve ever had the frustration of losing a whole report while using other software, you know just how valuable this feature is. Tune into this value-packed episode to learn the details of all of this, and much more! Here’s where you can find Andy: zInspector zInspector Support zInspector on Google Play zInspector on the App Store Show Notes [02:50] - Brad introduces Andy and explains why he’s excited to have him on the show. Andy then gives some of his background and explains that he created zInspector to solve a problem of his own. [04:26] - How long did Andy manage a company of his own? [06:39] - We hear where zInspector really fits into a process, with Andy explaining that his background and experience is in single-family home turnovers. [09:19] - One of the first questions that someone might ask Andy is how this compares to some of the software-provided versions. Andy addresses this question. [12:35] - Andy walks us through the video side of the inspection report with zInspector. [15:24] - How does zInspector work when you don’t have wifi access on the site you’re inspecting? [17:58] - Andy explains how you could include a link to a zInspector report in a security deposit form. [19:55] - Does Andy have any preferences or recommendations for hardware to use in the field? zInspector works on either Android or iOS, he explains. [22:18] - Andy elaborates on the 360-degree cameras and videos that you can use with zInspector. [25:52] - Andy talks us through the big, bottom-line question: how much does it cost? [27:53] - We learn that Andy syncs all the homes in his inventory into zInspector. [28:40] - You can try zInspector unlimited for 15 days for free, but it’s free forever for one user and five properties. [30:49] - Brad shares a story of winning a court case based on dates and timestamps on a YouTube video. [32:34] - What is Andy offering to listeners who sign up using the discount code “Brad”? [33:30] - Andy talks about a brand-new feature in zInspector’s 360 tours. [35:35] - What’s the best way for listeners to reach Andy or learn more about him or zInspector?
