In this episode of Bulletproof Radio, I’m talking with a godfather of fasting, Professor Valter Longo, Ph.D. He started researching fasting decades before anyone else started paying much attention to it. In 2018, TIME Magazine named Prof. Longo as one of the 50 most influential people in health care for his research on fasting-mimicking diets as a way to improve health and prevent disease. He’s director of the Longevity Institute at University of Southern California-Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, Los Angeles, and director of the Longevity and Cancer Program at the Italian Foundation of Cancer Research. “Fasting really in my mind is probably the most powerful way to reset and help regenerate, but also help clear junk and damage that is accumulated,” Prof. Longo says. Our conversation hits the high points of how and why to fast, and also goes into the research that got us to what we know today and looks at what’s next. We talk about everything from Prof. Longo's foundational research on yeast to the possibility of having future technology that tells us how to fast based on certain blood markers or gut bacteria. He’s also focused his work on the nutrients present in the fats, proteins and carbs we choose to consume during our fasts. “Without understanding how nutrients such as proteins and sugars affect cellular function, aging and aging damage, and regeneration, it's difficult to determine the type and quantity of nutrients for optimal longevity,” Prof. Longo says in his book, “The Longevity Diet: Discover the New Science Behind Stem Cell Activation and Regeneration to Slow Aging, Fight Disease, and Optimize Weight.” Beyond fasting, Prof. Longo created five pillars of longevity related to nutrition and human biology: juventology (the study of youth), epidemiology, clinical studies, centenarian studies, and the study of complex systems. We also discuss bigger philosophical questions and the ethics surrounding longevity. What would it mean to try and live forever? And what does longevity mean in the face of advancing technology that may boost our life span by 50 to 100 years? “I think technology is going to take over in the next 50 years and I think bionics is going to take over in the next 50 years,” Prof. Longo says. “It’s going to be a very different world; it’s going to be a very different approach. And it’s going to be an approach that has to do much more with memory and memory transfer, and all kinds of crazy things.”Got a comment, idea or question for the podcast? Soul Soil: Where Agriculture and Spirit Intersect with Brooke Kornegay
“Your food just feels good when I eat it”…this is the refrain Jennifer Maynard hears again and again from customers eating the meals she produces from her regenerative agriculture farm and assembles through her meal kit business—meals based on the Longevity Diet. Jennifer has done her homework when it comes to food that works with the human body. She has traveled to several of the blue zones—areas with a high concentration of people over 100 years old—and discovered not just what they eat, but how they live and grow their food as well. Jennifer worked in the Biotech and Pharmaceutical specialty medicine areas for over 20 years. After putting two decades of her passion into changing people's lives through modern medicine, she felt her knowledge and experience would be better served focusing on "Food as Medicine." Even though progress has been made with medicine, the battle with chronic illness is being lost. In order to address this, she founded Greater Greens, a regenerative organic farm, as the first step to bringing this movement front and center and to help focus on the root of our health challenges. Once the farm was fully operational, she co-founded Nutrition for Longevity, a farm-to-fork meal kitting company that focuses on bringing nutritionally tailored meals to the masses direct from her farm. In this episode… Phytonutrients and the connection between soil and human health, including our response to stress The soil microbiome is the plant’s immune system, much as the human gut microbiome makes up a huge part of the human immune system Practices that have led to the reduction of organic matter in U.S. soils from 11% to 1% Techniques Jennifer uses on her farm, Greater Greens, to produce high quality, phytonutrient-rich foods The critical role of native insect populations in maintaining agroecological balance The power of the consumer in making the shift toward regenerative agriculture Ways to get more nutrient-dense foods into our local communities How farms with healthy soils are far more resilient with regard to climate change We can begin to support farmers interested in transitioning to regenerative agriculture using carbon credits Kids actually WILL eat vegetables…produce that is grown in living soil is far more appealing than conventional veggies! Centenarians in the Blue Zones tend to be regenerative agriculture farmers, utilizing ancient techniques practiced by the indigenous populations Resources Nutrition for Longevity, Jennifer’s meal kit service Greater Greens on Facebook and Instagram Jennifer Maynard on Instagram Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming by Paul Hawken The Longevity Diet: Discover the New Science Behind Stem Cell Activation and Regeneration to Slow Aging, Fight Disease, and Optimize Weight by Valter Longo

The thyroid naturopathic doctor talks about diet, supplements, botanical medicines, and micronutrient analyses that provide detailed information. Understanding things on the cellular level allows physicians to better strategize on appropriate treatment. And she explains thyroid balance and how the body detoxifies. Dr. Thacker's holistic practice focuses heavily on helping women balance their hormones and treat their thyroid disorders naturally.

I used to drink 16 cans of Coca-Cola a day and eat big boxes of Little Debbie snack cakes a day. When McDonald's had that crazy Monopoly game, I would play that thing every year from the first year that they started doing it. And I would go five times a week during the workweek, even more sometimes, just to get those pieces. I could never get Boardwalk and it was just you know… that was my normal way of eating. Dr. Satchin Panda, PhD. is a professor and researcher at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and a founding executive member of the Center for Circadian Biology at the University of California, San Diego. He is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on circadian rhythms and has been publishing revolutionary research with a current focus on the benefits of time-restricted eating. He is also the author of The Circadian Code, a guide for optimizing health and reversing disease by living in alignment with the body’s internal clock. Dr. Panda is with Dr. Tommy Wood on the podcast today, talking about the evidence that points to the dramatic impact of meal timing and light exposure on health. They discuss the high risk of chronic disease that comes with circadian mismatch and share the most important steps you can take to mitigate the damage associated with living in a world that never sleeps. In the introduction, I mention a survey. You can answer the questions (and get a little more detail about the program with Simon Marshall) at this link: → http://survey.nbt.ai ← Here’s the outline of this interview with Satchin Panda: [00:00:37] Book: The Circadian Code, by Satchin Panda. LONGO Dr. Valter Longo, Professor of Gerontology and Biological Science and Director of The Longevity Institute at the School of Gerontology at USC, is one of the world's premier experts on living longer, healthier lives. He's been dubbed "The Guru of Longevity" by TIME Magazine. Dr. Longo is interested in understanding the fundamental mechanisms of aging in yeast, mice and humans by using genetics and biochemistry techniques and identifying the molecular pathways conserved from simple organisms to humans that can be modulated to protect against multiple stresses and treat or prevent cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease and other diseases of aging. The focus is on the signal transduction pathways that regulate resistance to oxidative damage in yeast and mice. Dr. Longo's new book, The Longevity Diet: Discover the New Science Behind Stem Cell Activation and Regeneration to Slow Aging, Fight Disease, and Optimize Weight, is the one-stop guide to his research and philosophies on aging healthier and extending life expectancy. It's medical approach is based on his 5 Pillars of Longevity, where each pillar looks at several key factors that influence our chances of optimal health. The practical application of which combines a healthy, every day, pescatarian eating plan (the "Longevity Diet") with a 5-day fasting-mimicking diet, or FMD, done intermittently throughout the year.
