Tens of thousands of predominantly black and Asian service personnel who died fighting for the British Empire were not properly commemorated due to "pervasive racism", a report has said. The report cited racist comments such as the governor of a British colony saying in 1923 that "the average native... would not understand or appreciate a headstone". The Commonwealth War Graves Commission apologised and said "we recognise the wrongs of the past and are deeply sorry and will be acting immediately to correct them". Martha Kearney spoke to historian professor David Olusoga, who's television company produced the documentary Unremembered, that led to the report being commissioned; Claire Horton, director general of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission; and David Lammy MP, Labour's shadow justice secretary and presenter on the Unremembered. Good, bad, or simply mediocre? X-Men Month continues with Jake + Mitch pitting two titles against each other. Because, at long last, the world deserves to know, which is better?:'Days of Future Past' or 'Apocalypse' Between sloppy dialogue, fantastic moments, and a lot of uncertainty, the guys attempt to break down the age old struggle of expectation against reality. Also, along the way, they ask a few questions:- Is 'Days of Future Past' a "Big Mac" movie?- Why didn't get Kitty Pride a better opportunity?- Is 'X-Men Apocalypse' a fun genre romp or just plain bad?No matter where they land one thing is certain -- the X-Men cinematic universe has a wide range of hits and misses. But there's never any shortage of takes to be had. We had our first-ever male guest on the show: Adam Gordon! One of the topics explored in this episode is Men's Mental Health, where Adam and Aman share their own experiences, as well as highlighting how the topic is viewed in society and why it seems as though it is never spoken about. The topic of Further Education arose and Adam helped educate us on the many stigmas, barriers, and racial injustices those of Caribbean descent face in regards to this. He also enlightened us on a number of racial divisions within black culture and dropped some important black history that educational institutions fail to teach in this country. Stay tuned for a quick two truths and one lie where we discover some interesting things about each other. A huge thank you to Adam for joining us on this very special episode. We hope these topics help raise awareness in our own community and other communities. Let's start to make a change.

Whilst still being at home in the folk, singer songwriter genre the duo wanted to develop their sound further, follow up EP 'Love and Redemption' was more experimental and introduced further instrumentation, much of it programmed. For the next batch of songs the duo began using guest musicians to enhance the folk and country acoustic tunes, as heard on the mournful EP 'Poetry of Reason' and expanded even further with a full band backing for the recent EP "Waiting for the Rain'. Tom Jackson got into postcards more than 25 years ago, and since then he's built up a massive collection of around 60,000 of them. He's also written a book and started up a popular Twitter account @PastPostcard. In his show 'Podcast From The Past', Tom uses the postcard as a springboard into stories. Two guests bring some favourite postcards into the studio, Tom does the same, and they talk about what they mean and why they were sent. We speak to Tom Jackson about his collection and how he finds his guests, and play some of an episode of Podcast From the Past featuring the poet, playwright and translator Sasha Dugdale and the actor and director Samuel West.

Helen Stagg presented on 17 July 2018 'Harnessing the River Murray, a Journey of Discovery: Archives and Voices from the Past'. Helen’s talk took a journey through her research for the book, 'Harnessing the River Murray: stories of the people who built Locks 1 to 9, 1915-1935'. Helen shared the genesis of the book and her motivation to record the stories of those involved in South Australia’s share of locking the River, to reveal the experiences of people who did not get the chance to author their own story. Her presentation gives background to the River Murray Scheme and stages of lock building. Helen explores some of the challenges of discovering the names of the workers and discuss some of the documentary evidence. A valuable adjunct to this was her discovery of a metaphorical time capsule which gave a rare and valuable perspective, an up-close and personal insight into the past. Why does the past matter? In our fast-paced, future-facing world, what's the value and importance of studying history, and how can we do it better? And what part do our answers to these questions ultimately play in shaping times to come? Dr Stuart Candy presented this public lecture as part of the State History Conference 'Hearts & Minds: Revaluing the Past' and the Open State program, held in October 2017. It was supported by Museums Galleries Australia (SA) and University Collections, University of Adelaide. In the recorded talk Dr Stuart Candy explores the value of understanding our past when it comes to looking to the future. Dr Stuart Candy is leader of Foresight + Innovation for Arup Australasia, based in the Melbourne office. He brings to the role a decade of experience in futures practice across multiple sectors. He has worked on projects for the governments of Australia, Korea, Hawaii, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, and has also done foresight events or projects with General Electric, Autodesk, Frog Design, Institute for the Future, IDEO, and the TED conference in Long Beach, California. Stuart works at the intersection of design and foresight, and has an international reputation in the design of experiential futures – translating scenarios into immersive situations and tangible artefacts. The Sealed Book -- Out of the Past Heard Sundays at 10:30 on the Mutual network in 1945, The Sealed Book was, from today's perspective, one of the more campy and 'over the top' shows of the mystery/horror genre. Each week (for a run of 26 episodes) a new tale is told from 'The Sealed Book' by the 'Keeper of the Book'. The show started with gong and the voice of host Philip Clarke saying, "once again the keeper of the book has opened the ponderous door to the secret vault wherein is kept the great sealed book in which is recorded all the secretes and mysterious of mankind though the ages." No penalty in those days for run-on sentences. This episode, a tale of betrayal and blackmail called 'Out of the Past', is written by Robert A. Arthur and David Kogan (as are all the rest of them). Many of these shows are recycled for The Mysterious Traveler and this one was rebroadcast on April 19, 1949 as a Mysterious Traveler program. Sit Back & Enjoy The Sealed Book.
