Through our conversation, you'll gain a deeper understanding of how Kairos is revolutionizing seminary education with its Competency-Based Theological Education (CBTE) approach, detailed in Greg's latest book. We confront the skepticism about CBTE's academic integrity head-on, illustrating Kairos's unwavering commitment to excellence as affirmed by ATS and HLC accreditations. We grapple with the current landscape of theological education, facing the winds of change in church attendance, funding, and the crucial relationship between seminaries and local communities. Greg and I also illuminate the parallels between today's transition from Christendom to post-Christendom and the early church's own adaptive journey, as chronicled in the Book of Acts. Delving into the CBTE model, we reveal its focus on mentorship and community-based learning, which offers a vibrant and relevant path for today's theological scholars. The episode doesn't end with just insights; it offers a glimpse into a groundbreaking financial model that defies the norms of educational economics. Discover how Kairos's subscription-based tuition model has maintained affordability amidst a sea of rising costs, and ponder how such a revolutionary approach could reshape the financial landscape of education. We also celebrate the power of partnerships and community, as Kairos aligns with institutions like Luther House of Study to forge new, robust discipleship pathways within various faith traditions. Steve Shaffer, CEO of Homesteaders Life, and Brent Williams, CEO and Co-Founder of Benekiva, join the show to share more behind-the-scenes details about the relationship their two companies have built. Homesteaders became Benekiva's first customer while also taking on the role of first investor in a story full of lessons, insights and guidance about how a startup so new its founders still had day jobs and a nearly-120-year-old mutual insurer can work together to change both organizations. Their story is the final case in the new book in The Future of Insurance series, Volume III. The Collaborators. Highlights from the Show Benekiva is a digitized claims, servicing and new business platform for insurers Brent came up in the industry and saw the need for it first hand, and when he couldn't find a solution, he set out to build it Homesteaders pays over 60k claims per, and saw the need for Benekiva's help, and knew it would be faster to partner than build it themselves Benekiva went about things in a different way than was the norm in the industry, where most vendors over-promise and under-deliver; while people don't necessarily intend this, Benekiva almost goes 180 on the whole mindset to be completely transparent and honest about the good and the bad For HLC, they also invested in Benekiva, which was their first insurtech investment, and their first true innovation investment This took a lot of purposeful action and willingness to challenge themselves culturally to actually change their organization and how they think about innovation They didn't have the scale to create a $100m venture fund or setup a big innovation team, but neither of those things would have had the same broad effect on the company as a whole They drew a wall between the investment and client side because there could be unintended consequences of melding the two As they got into the project, they started to notice that they were deviating from the 80/20 rule to more like 99/1, where a very small number of outlier requirements were holding up the whole project, which lead to one of the tougher spots in the project They found that a consultant was working between the company, dragging the project – and their contract – out, rather than helping to move them to completion This helped inform new values for HLC, including being bold, which shows up in how they work across the business today Brent shares how different it is to build a great piece of tech vs. installing or delivering a great piece of tech, which is a whole other level of task That brings in all of the complexities of your client on top of any questions about your technology This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance Volume III. We talk at length about AI, workers rights, and the grim future of art if the people who make it don't learn to band together and stick up for themselves. If you're the politically weary sort, or get upset when you hear non-status-quo opinions about politics, economics, etc., this episode may not be for you. Architect Anthony Grumbine believes the State Street promenade needs an interim plan because we're currently allowing a "B-level," or even "C-level," which is below Santa Barbara's standards. "Shouldn't we at least have a basic, good, interim design in the meantime that is actually doable as an interim solution," Grumbine said on the latest episode of Santa Barbara Talks. "The reality is that some of those interim solutions are going to be around for 10 years probably. So why the heck are we allowing this to be a B-level city, or even a C-level city in terms of what it looks like, compared to what it could be." Grumbine said if it is going to take at least five more years before anything is actually built out on State Street, something needs to happen sooner. "We're so many years from having anything actually done," Grumbine said. "It's going to take years and years to get a plan. It's going to take years and years and years to fund and build that plan. And it's going to be done in portions." Grumbine also chairs of the Santa Barbara Historic Landmarks Commission. In this podcast, he talks about State Street, the future of De la Guerra Plaza, and the city's housing challenges. In his role as an architect and as HLC chair, Grumbine explains what he looks for in a project, and how the architecture should serve the function of the building. He talks about the principles of strength, function and beauty in architecture. "Is it not just of this immediate fad or style, but actually a quality thing that is going to be beautiful for years to come, and actually be looked at like we look at these buildings that are 50, 100 years old, and they are still beautiful," Grumbine said. "There was this ingenuity to them, but they had this classic feel like they are never going to go out of style." Grumbine also teaches architecture for Holy Apostles College & Seminary, and is an architect and principal at Harrison Design. Grumbine's architecture projects range from new and remodeled churches, to Catholic campus buildings, to historic restoration and private residences, according to his website. Sean has a YouTube channel called "Ask An Apostate (almost) Anything" https://www.youtube.com/user/cordialneondiva/featured Like most born-in Jehovah's Witnesses, Sean got baptized young at age 16. Over the course of time he served as a ministerial servant, engaged in regular and auxiliary pioneer service. According to Sean, the waking up process was rough and so is the subsequent fallout. However, he confidently states that “It's totally worth it, but man, it's brutal.Sean was raised in a progressive Jehovah's Witness household where he remembers his father climbing the Jehovah's Witness corporate ladder. Both parents were regular pioneers (and his mom remains one today). Throughout the years, his parents have sacrificed a lot for the organization.Sean's dad was the regional convention and circuit assembly overseer and has now been moved into a position where he is being used to train other brothers to do the same thing. He also did a lot of work on Kingdom Hall quick builds and Assembly Hall builds, and has done work with the LDC, RBC, and HLC. He recalls meeting a lot of "heavy hitters" in the organization. He grew up constantly going to dinners and family vacations with district overseers, circuit overseers, branch representatives, bethel speakers, missionaries, and even went to dinner with a Governing Body member. (Or at least he thinks he was, but at such a young age he was not impressed.Sean's family hobnobbed with the elite Jehovah's Witnesses, and he got to see a LOT of the behind-the-scenes stuff that goes on at regional conventions and on local congregation levels. In this episode, I chat with three amazing women who are all involved with Hope Loves Company, a non-profit that provides support to children who have had or have a loved one battling ALS.  Hope Loves Company is the result of raising three children who had to learn about ALS (or Lou Gehrig's Disease) as young children.   Hope Loves Company's (HLC) founder, Jodi O'Donnell-Ames, lost her husband, Kevin, to ALS in 2001.   Their daughter, Alina, was almost three when Kevin was diagnosed.   Years after Jodi lost her husband to ALS,  Jodi married Warren Benton Ames and became the mother of his two children,  Nora and Adam who were then 11 and 8 years old.  They had lost their biological mother to ALS.  So after watching her daughter and her 2 step children experience life with ALS and the loss of a father and mother, Jodi realized the need to offer support to children of those living with ALS.  That was the inspiration to start this one of a kind community.  In this episode you'll hear about all that HLC offers to children like Camp HLC, Hugs of Hope care packages, two annual scholarships, a Young Ambassador program, virtual peer support groups, children's books and educational materials, teen retreats, the HLC Kids Count Conference, and more.   You'll even hear from a young adult who has benefitted from HLC.   I am in awe of these ladies and the love and support they pour into our children when they need it the most.  Thanks for listening and sharing.   Follow:  https://bit.ly/ImDyingToTellYouInstagram
