For just over a decade, from 1956 to 1967, a collection of dilapidated former sail-making warehouses clustered at the lower tip of Manhattan became the quiet epicenter of the art world. Coenties Slip, a dead-end street near the water, was home to a circle of wildly talented and varied artists that included Robert Indiana, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, James Rosenquist, Delphine Seyrig, Lenore Tawney, and Jack Youngerman. As friends and inspirations to one another, they created a unique community for unbridled creative expression and experimentation, and the works they made at the Slip would go on to change the course of American art. Now, for the first time, in The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever (Harper, 2023) Dr. Prudence Peiffer pays homage to these artists and the unsung impact their work had on the direction of late twentieth-century art and film. This remarkable biography, as transformative as the artists it illuminates, questions the very concept of a “group” or “movement,” as it spotlights the Slip's eclectic mix of gender and sexual orientation, abstraction and Pop, experimental film, painting, and sculpture, assemblage and textile works. Brought together not by the tenets of composition or technique, nor by philosophy or politics, the artists cultivated a scene at the Slip defined by a singular spirit of community and place. They drew lasting inspiration from one another, but perhaps even more from where they called home, and the need to preserve the solitude its geography fostered. Despite Coenties Slip's obscurity, the entire history of Manhattan was inscribed into its cobblestones—one of the first streets and central markets of the new colony, built by enslaved people, with revolutionary meetings at the tavern just down Pearl Street; named by Herman Melville in Moby Dick and site of the boom and bust of the city's maritime industry; and, in the artists's own time, a development battleground for Jane Jacobs and Robert Moses. The Slip's history is entwined with that of the artists and their art—eclectic and varied work that was made from the wreckage of the city's many former lives. An ambitious and singular account of a time, a place, and a group of extraordinary people, The Slip investigates the importance of community, and makes an argument for how we are shaped by it, and how it in turns shapes our work. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Contributor: Megan Hurley MD Educational Pearls: What is the mediastinum? The thoracic cavity is separated into different compartments by membranes The lungs exist in their own pleural cavities, and the mediastinum is everything in between The mediastinum extends from the sternum to the thoracic vertebrae and includes the heart, the aorta, the trachea, the esophagus, the thymus, as well as many lymph nodes and nerves. What is a pneumomediastinum? Air in the mediastinum How can pneumomediastinum be categorized? Traumatic Ex. Stab wound to the trachea Ex. Boerhaave's Syndrome of the esophagus, possibly from an endoscopic procedure. This mechanism in particular is a higher risk of infection because not only air but food can accumulate in the mediastinum Ex. Intubation with a bougie These will likely need surgical repair Nontraumatic Ex. Forceful inhalation causing microperforations in the trachea. Possibly while inhaling something like drugs Ex. Bad asthma for similar reasons Ex. Gas forming bacteria What happens if you use positive pressure ventilation on a patient with a hole in their trachea? The positive pressure will force extra air into the mediastinum The air will move between the layers of subcutaneous tissue and can track up into the neck and face regions recognized as crepitus on exam This can also cause a tension pneumomediastinum in which the air pressure in the compartment constricts the heart, impeding its ability to fill during diastole These patients can undergo bronchoscopy because that procedure does not require positive pressure and will not worsen the condition. Endoscopies do require positive pressure so endoscopies are not an option How is a tension pneumomediastinum treated? By inserting a needle into the space from below the xiphoid process to allow the air to escape, similar to a pericardiocentesis As a temporizing measure, if the hole is high enough in the trachea, the intubation can be continued by deliberately pushing the endotracheal tube into the right main bronchus, creating a seal, and only ventilating the right lung while the patient heads to surgery. This is called right-mainstemming. References Clancy DJ, Lane AS, Flynn PW, Seppelt IM. Tension pneumomediastinum: A literal form of chest tightness. Democracy That Delivers
405 - ACGC - A New Guide for Anti-Corruption Messaging in the Real World

Democracy That Delivers

Our episode today focuses on anti-corruption messaging: what messaging has looked like in the past, the challenges and risks it poses, and novel approaches that could yield better results. Holly Sandalow, Program Officer at CIPE's Anti-Corruption & Governance Center, sits down with Caryn Peiffer, Associate Professor in International Public Policy and Governance at the University of Bristol, and Nic Cheeseman, Professor of Democracy at the University of Birmingham, who have authored the new How-to Guide to Anti-Corruption Messaging in partnership with CIPE and with support from the National Democratic Institute. Anti-corruption campaigns have been a staple of both foreign aid programming and civil society over the last 30 years, and there is often an element of awareness-raising that involves producing messages about the harm that corruption can do. There is growing concern, however, that anti-corruption messages may be ineffective—or even do more harm than good—in part because they are not being tailored, targeted and tested to make sure they have the desired effect. Drawing upon their own research and studies by fellow academics about the impacts & efficacy of anti-corruption messaging, Peiffer and Cheeseman discuss the risks of deploying messages that have not been rigorously tailored, targeted, and tested. Listen in to hear what ideas they have for crafting more effective messaging campaigns.

Prudence Peiffer's first book, The Slip, is the never-before-told story of an obscure little street at the lower tip of Manhattan and the remarkable artists who got their start there. For just over a decade, from 1956 to 1967, a cluster of dilapidated former sail-making warehouses became the quiet epicenter of the art world. Coenties Slip, a dead-end street near the water, was home to a circle of wildly talented artists that included Robert Indiana, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, James Rosenquist, Lenore Tawney, Delphine Seyrig, and Jack Youngerman. As friends and inspirations to one another, they created a unique community of unbridled creative expression and experimentation, and the works they made at the Slip would go on to change the course of American art. Peiffer pays homage to these artists and the impact their work had on the direction of late 20th-century art and film. This remarkable biography questions the very concept of a “group” or “movement,” as it spotlights the Slip's eclectic mix of gender and sexual orientation, abstraction and Pop, experimental film, painting, and sculpture, assemblage and textile works. Despite Coenties Slip's obscurity, the entire history of Manhattan was inscribed into its cobblestones—it was one of the first streets and central markets of the new colony, built by enslaved people, with revolutionary meetings at the tavern just down Pearl Street; named by Herman Melville in Moby Dick and site of the boom and bust of the city's maritime industry; and, in the artists' own time, a development battleground for people like Jane Jacobs and Robert Moses. I caught up with Peiffer, in the Fall of 2023 where she unpacked this group portrait, one of my favorite books of the year. Listen to hear Prudence Peiffer discuss the history of Coenties Slip.

In the 1950s and 60s, Coenties Slip—an obscure street on the lower tip of Manhattan overlooking the East River—was home to some of the most iconic artists in history, and who would define American Art during their time there: Robert Indiana, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, James Rosenquist, Delphine Seyrig, Lenore Tawney, and Jack Youngerman. As friends and inspirations to one another, these artists created a unique community for unbridled creative expression and experimentation. Prudence Peiffer is the kind of art historian who understands the importance of context and place, and her book, “The Slip: The New York City Street that Changed American Art Forever” provides the kind of rich context and human detail that textbooks could only dream of. She joined me to discuss the history of these artists, why we have such a hard time seeing artists as people, the friction between accessible artists and their inaccessible art, why watching Robert Indiana eat a mushroom for 39 minutes is actually totally beautiful, and what it means to authentically nudge art history towards inclusion. Prudence Peiffer is an art historian, writer, and editor, specializing in modern and contemporary art. She is Director of Content at MoMA, New York. She was a Senior Editor at Artforum magazine from 2012-2017, and Digital Content Director at David Zwirner in 2018. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, New York Review of Books, Artforum, and Bookforum, among other publications.  Her book, “The Slip: The New York City Street that Changed American Art Forever” has been longlisted for the National Book Award. Writer, editor, and art historian Prudence Peiffer joins Kate Wolf to speak about her first book, The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever. The book is a group biography of a collection of luminous American artists including Agnes Martin, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Indiana, James Rosenquist and Jack Youngerman, as well as his wife, the French actress and filmmaker, Delphine Seyrig. From the late 1950s to the middle of the 1960s, all of them happened to live in the same place: a collection of former sail-making warehouses on Coenties Slip, a dead end street in one of the oldest sections of Manhattan, right next to the river. Rather than jostle their work into well-established art historical movements and categories, Peiffer's book asserts place as the generative frame from which to understand these artists and the connections and influence between them. Though the community was short-lived, their support of one another, the collective solitude they found, even their rivalry, takes shape as integral to their development, and at least one of the reasons that their work survives today. Also, Andrew Leland, author of The Country of the Blind, returns to recommend Darryl by Jackie Ess.

Episode No. 613 features author Prudence Peiffer and museum director Timothy Potts. Peiffer is the author of "The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever." The book, out this week from Harper, is a group biography of seven artists -- Robert Indiana, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, James Rosenquist, Delphine Seyrig, Lenore Tawney, and Jack Youngerman -- who worked on Coenties Slip in the 1950s and '60s. Coenties Slip was a street that overlooked the East River in lower Manhattan. Peiffer's book argues for not only the importance of the artists themselves, but for where and how they worked as being important to the development of post-war art in New York. Peiffer is director of content at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.  Amazon and Bookshop offer "The Slip" for $22-36. Potts discusses the J. Paul Getty Museum's co-acquisition (with the National Portrait Gallery, London) of Joshua Reynolds' Portrait of Mai (ca. 1776). The painting, among Reynolds' finest works, is on view at the National Portrait Gallery. The first presentation at the Getty will be in 2026.

SandiPeiffer (Pie fur) has been happily married to her best friend for 36 yrs. She is a 58yr old mother of 4 (ages 18-31) and grandmother of 2(ages 2 and 1) who lives on the Atlantic coast of Florida. She is a veteran homeschool mom of 26 years, her youngest is graduating this year. She enjoys walking, reading, crafting, cooking and spending time with her family. As an adult Sandi has tried most of the diets, we have all heard of… Weight Watchers, Susan Powter Stop the Insanity, TOPS, The Zone Diet, 40-30-30, Shake diets, Suzanne Somers “Somersize”, South Beach, Atkins, The Rosedale Diet, etc. Her real struggle with weight started when she went on an anti-depressant for anxiety. Then the pounds really started to pack on. 120 lbs by the time it was all said and done. She found intermittent fasting after a diagnosis of Type 2. Diabetes with an A1C of 8.4, and a fasting glucose of 237. Though weight loss has been a nice side benefit, she really has had the focus of reversing her diabetes. Starting IF in Dec. 2018, at 5'4” and 300 lbs. Now after 1565 days of clean fasting, she is currently at 240 lbs, but more importantly to her, her A1C is 6.2 and her fasting glucose stays in the 120's, without diabetes. meds. She started IF by dipping her toe in the water, so to speak. With her previous health issues, especially her recent bout with Adrenal Fatigue, she was determined to be gentle with her body. So she started with 14:10, clean fasting, and didn't change her way of eating at all. After a couple of weeks, went up to 15:9, then did the same to get to 16:8 and 17:7. She actually lost most of her weight at 17:7, even though she went on to 18:6 and eventually 19:5. Doing OMAD, “restaurant style” at 18:6 and 19:5. After 3 yrs of 19:5 OMAD, her body apparently said that was too stressful. Her cholesterol jumped very high, as well as triglycerides and measures of inflammation. So, through working with a functional medicine Dr., she changed her IF schedule to 16:8 and her diet to a modified Paleo plan. That did the trick and the problems have corrected, and she's taken off an additional 10 lbs. We are all an experiment of one, and sometimes we have to “tweak” how we practice IF. Listening to our bodies is so important! Her husband also practices IF and has lost 65 lbs.
