The Fastest Way to Profitability is Pricing Pricing your product or service can be a challenge. Often times businesses will spend tremendous amounts of money trying to price right only to go with a gut feeling about the right price. What is more most of the research on right pricing focuses on learning from their current customers and fails to address the question or the answer as to why prospective customers are not buying. Sure, there are pricing formulas that are espoused in business schools when it comes to pricing, but sadly most of the textbook formulas are theoretical more than practical as the vast majority of the authors have never actually run or owned a business. In this episode of A New Direction one of the top 50 global thought leaders and influencers on sales and Forbes Business Council Thought Leader Per Sjofors a.k.a. the Price Whisperer joins us to keep us from leaving money on the table because of pricing and at the same time keep customers from leaving the table all together. Per's book, "The Price Whisperer: A Holistic Approach to Pricing Power" is one of the most comprehensive books on pricing that I have read to date. The Price Whisperer makes a strong case that price is the fastest way to profitability. But to get there is going to take some work and effort. The Price Whisperer also clues us in that there are behavioral economics that come into play when it comes to pricing. The fact is that all purchasing decisions whether B2B or B2C are actually emotional. We want to believe as buyers that we make logical purchases, but the fact is our brain and emotions dictate the triggers that cause us to buy. Why is this so important? Because when you understand how the buyer buys and you understand the value proposition of your product or service then pricig becomes the fastest way to profitability. And yet we often think of buyers as acting rationally which is not supported by the research Per offers in his book. So then how do we arrive at the right price? Per takes us through a variety of research scenarios whether you are B2B or B2C that you can apply to help you find the right price for you product or service. And if you are a small business...listen in to the show, because The Price Whisperer helps you do low cost research that will help you get there. Thank you to our sponsors of A New Direction! “You can never have too much education.” - Per SjofersPer Sjofors, aka “The Price Whisperer”, is the Founder of Sjofors & Partners.Pricing has always been an interest area for Per. As a serial entrepreneur, running companies in Europe and the US, he did pricing experiences. Some of these worked spectacularly well, some did not work at all. As a result, Per founded his company out of his frustration that what business schools teach about pricing is too abstract, and too academic for a business executive to act on. Likewise with books about pricing. Consequently, he set out to make pricing practical and actionable, and this stems from a deep understanding of how the 4 Ps of Marketing interact and how changes in one of the Ps affect Price. Since then, he has been at the forefront as a pricing thought leader, taking a very different view on everything pricing. Per is an author of “The Price Whisperer - A Holist Approach to Pricing Power” and is a sought-after speaker for a variety of conferences and business circuits.Per is a member of the Forbes Magazine Business Council, a member of the C-Suite Network, appears regularly on podcasts and business radio shows, and gets quoted regularly in the financial press, including Inc Magazine, The Street, Fortune Magazine, Industry Week, Business Insider and the Financial Times. We talk about price anchoring, the mistakes businesses make with pricing, and how low prices can potentially scare away customers. --- Discover Your Pricing Mistakes with Per Sjofors I welcome Per Sjofors to our show, who is a six-time CEO, pricing expert, and author of The Price Whisperer, A Holistic Approach to Pricing Power. Welcome to the show, Per. Thank you very much, Steve. And I'm happy to be here. And I hope we're going to have a good conversation that's of interest and entertaining for the audience. Well, that's the goal. That's definitely the goal. So let's see if we can have that. I'm sure we will. So let's dive in. And I'm very curious about your journey because it doesn't sound like it was an obvious one to become what you call a price whisperer. You have been a serial CEO of different companies and you got to the point where I guess you must have discovered that pricing is important because now you talk about that. So please tell us a little bit about your journey, how did you arrive at becoming a pricing expert? First of all, let me tell you this, that the price whisper is not something that I invented. I was called the price whisper so many times that I eventually decided to adopt the moniker, but it's not something I invented. But my journey is I'm natively Swedish and I got my first CEO job to establish and run a company in Switzerland, in Zurich. That was really a challenge because suddenly I was tasked with starting a company that I've never done before, tasked to be the CEO that I've never done before, tasked to develop the company to sort of a powerhouse in B2B businesses over Europe that I've never done before. And it was in, you know, in Zurich. So it was in German and I don't speak German. So it was really challenging, but as challenging as it was, it was also so exciting, you know. So that's the first step on my journey. Next step was that I was really bought over by our main competitor, which was a Japanese company. So I ended up being CEO of the European subsidiary of that company out of London and over about a three-year period I managed to quadruple sales. And then it was time to sort of jump over the pond here and initially I established and ran a division of a fairly large public company. And while I was very the company around me died, so it didn't help us very much. But, and then I had another four, I think, CEO jobs, maybe five, before I do what I do. And in all of those instances, we did some experiments with pricing. And some of those experiments were very successful, like next quarter revenues are up 25%, others were complete duds. And what I had learned in business school and could read about pricing was so theoretical and academic that it was useless information. It didn't help us to understand why some experiments worked and others didn't. So 15 years ago, I decided I was too old and too opinionated to be a hard gun, so I set up my own practice and develop the process that would make every pricing experiment a success. So what is it about pricing experiments which makes them difficult to codify and to kind of systemize so that anyone can do it? Or maybe it is codifiable. So why was it not tangible, the success early on? Was it a hit and miss process and how, how do you discover how to make it an intentional . This is this is how most companies if if they do pricing experiments, and many of them don't, if they do pricing experiments they theythey sort of adjust the The process I developed is much more scientific, if you like, because everything you do in your company is eventually expressed into your customer's willingness to pay, right? And if you have, for example, if you have marketing messages that are not effective, your customers are not going to have a very high willingness to pay,

Small business owners are faced with a myriad of decisions every day - and one of the most challenging decisions is how to price products and services. Is this price too low? Is this price too high? How do we know we're getting what we're worth? Today's guest is going to pull back the curtain on the mystery that is price-setting. Per Sjofors, aka The Price Whisperer, spent years running companies and doing experiments on pricing. Some were successful. Some were complete duds. And everything he read in business school didn't shed any light on why some worked and some didn't. So he took it upon himself to figure it out, and now his company is helping clients 5x - 10x their revenue in just a few years. In this episode, he explains why pricing should be the centerpiece of your business strategy, how you can leverage it to attract the type of customers you want, and how you can earn the right to charge higher prices. He also gives some real-life examples of how some big names use “fighting brands” to reach new markets and how fear plays a significant role in the purchase-making process. We say this often, but this is definitely an episode you'll want to listen to with pen and paper at the ready! Per Sjöfors is the founder and CEO of Sjöfors & Partners, a thought leader in everything pricing, driving growth, sales volume, and profits. His team of pricing consultants has profound knowledge of pricing strategies validated by powerful AI software to produce the pricing strategy services you most definitely need. They work with globally recognized brands on ways to gain pricing power through comprehensive analysis and pricing strategy methods. Forming marketing and sales strategies with tactics to transform companies to their next best level. Per is a sought-after speaker for various conferences, part of the Forbes Business Council and The C-Suite, appears regularly on podcasts and radio shows, and gets routinely quoted in the financial and business press. His new book "The Price Whisperer - A Holistic Approach to Pricing Power" is an Amazon best seller. When Per started experimenting with pricing, some of those experiments were very successful, pushing revenues up 25%, but they didn't understand why these experiments worked. 15 years ago, he set up his own shop and decided to develop a process that would make every pricing experiment a success. Creating a holistic view of how to price correctly, driving higher revenue, sales volume, and higher profits.Pricing is an art, combining process and science. Most people try to simplify the pricing model, thinking about the cost of the goods. But you actually need to price above your cost. The problem is that the costs have nothing to do with the value that you deliver, whether that is a service or a product. The willingness to pay means that you can measure how much people are willing to pay for the value you deliver. When you price accordingly. Your sales volume will increase, your revenues will increase and your shareholder value and profitability will increase all at the same time. The way we work as humans is that we cannot compare numbers. If you think about how many websites set up prices, they start with a low price, and then as you read left to right prices go up. That is wrong. What you want to do is start with a high price, which is called price anchoring. As you read left to right and top to bottom that's going to be the first price you see, which makes what appears after that more affordable. This will lead to higher sales volume, as opposed to doing it the traditional way, where you have an anchor, which is lower than the rest of the prices, leading to a lower willingness to pay and a lower sales volume.Create a value stack, starting with 10,000 where customers see that first, then 6000, then the 4000, which will increase sales of both the 4000 and the 6000. What you really want to do is have a mega-large package for 30,000, which nobody will buy. Just there as an anchor point. One of the most successful anchor points was when Apple introduced ‘the watch' a few years back. The normal Apple watch was 349 bucks which had exactly the same electronics as the limited edition in a gold case for 17,000. But it wasn't there to be sold. It was there as an anchor point. To do this properly, have pricing as a centerpiece in your business strategy. Within an organization, the company's profit comes from only three variables, the total cost, the total sales volume, and the price of what you sell. Of the three, the price has the highest leverage that impacts profit the most. If the organization, from a managerial and executive point of view, knows how small price changes will change the profitability of the company, you will take your company to the next level. In this episode:[01:23] Per, "the Price Whisperer" explains why he has this titleHe developed a process that would make every pricing experiment a successThe holistic view of how to price correctly

Customer segmentation is one of those key activities that companies spend a fair amount of time doing. They will investigate their existing customers and their market to determine which customer profile is the most desirable, meaning the customer profile the company believes has the greatest need for its product or service will lead to the easiest or highest sales. But in almost all cases, when companies do customer segmentation, they don't include the most critical aspect: what the various customer segments are willing to pay. This means that more often than not, companies are doing customer segmentation based on pure demographics—consumer demographics or business-to-business demographics. That's simply not good enough. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/diane-winbush/support

The Relationship Between Value, Customer Experience, and Price Shep Hyken interviews Per Sjöfors, aka "The Price Whisperer," Co-founder of Sjöfors & Partners and author of The Price Whisperer - A Holist Approach to Pricing Power. He shares how companies can use pricing to drive higher growth, sales volume, and profits by providing a great customer experience. Top Takeaways: · There is a direct correlation between how much a company can charge a customer and the level of customer experience. · How you present your product or service, and your value messages drive customer satisfaction, customer experience, and how much customers are willing to pay. · Any company has profitability based on three variables: total cost, sales volume, and price. Out of the three, price has the highest leverage on profitability. · Pricing drives satisfaction. Often higher prices lead to more satisfied customers than lower prices. Many companies compare themselves to others in their industry and start doing the same. But, if you give a compelling reason why your price is more than theirs, you're going to win customers over. · And Pers talks about the mistakes companies make when pricing affects the customer experience. Check it out! Quote: "A satisfied customer with good experiences is more likely to be willing to pay higher prices than somebody who is dissatisfied (if that customer ever comes back)." Pricing has always been an interest area for Per. As a serial entrepreneur, running companies in Europe and the US, he did pricing experiences. Some of these worked spectacularly well, some did not work at all. As a result, Per founded his company out of his frustration that what business schools teach about pricing is too abstract, too academic for a business executive to act on. Likewise with books about pricing. Consequently, he set out to make pricing practical and actionable, and this stems from a deep understanding how the 4 Ps of marketing interact and how changed in one of the Ps affect Price. Since then, he has been at the forefront as thought leader in everything pricing and he is a sought-after speaker for a variety of conferences and business circuits. Per appears regularly on podcasts and business radio shows and gets quoted regularly in the financial press, including Forbes, Fortune Magazine, Inc., Industry Week, Business Insider and the Financial Times. Prior to Atenga, Per had more than 25 years of executive management experience where he gained an appreciation for the importance of optimal pricing.
