In this episode of The Digital Marketing Podcast, brought to you by TargetInternet.com, Daniel, Ciaran, and Louise revisit the age-old question: “Is SEO dead?” This time, they look ahead to 2025 and beyond. The hosts examine how search engine optimisation has evolved—and why it's far from obsolete, despite the rise of AI, generative search, and changing user behaviours. The Big Question: Is SEO Dead in 2025? The team reflect on how this debate has reappeared time and again over the years. Daniel recalls delivering “Is SEO Dead?” presentations for more than a decade. Each new development—like Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE)—prompts marketers to wonder if SEO, as we know it, is on its last legs. The consensus? While the landscape is changing, SEO is definitely still alive. The Evolution of Search Search Everywhere Optimisation (SEO?) Daniel mentions a Neil Patel reference to “Search Everywhere Optimisation,” suggesting marketers need to ensure their content is discoverable across multiple platforms—search engines, social media, and beyond. While Ciaran pokes fun at the buzzword bingo, this concept points to the wider reality that people no longer rely solely on Google for answers. Search Journey Optimisation (SJO) Daniel also sarcastically floats another acronym—“Search Journey Optimisation”—to emphasise that effective SEO now involves guiding users throughout their journey, from discovery to conversion, across numerous touchpoints. Whether it's a blog, social channel, or AI-driven tool like ChatGPT, the goal is consistent: be where your audience is searching. Generative AI and the Future of Results Google's Business Model A student on Daniel's MSc programme queried whether Google's focus on generative AI answers might undermine its core income from search ads. Daniel counters that because advertising revenue is so vital, Google will simply evolve how it integrates AI responses in order to preserve those crucial ad clicks. AI is more likely to be blended with paid search than to replace it. User Behaviour in Social and AI From Instagram's rise as a “second largest search engine” to ChatGPT's quick-fire Q&A approach, people's searching habits are increasingly diversified. Still, the principle of discoverability remains paramount: marketers must ensure their content can be found wherever potential customers are looking. Why SEO (Still) Matters While AI-driven summaries and direct answers may reduce clicks for basic queries, the hosts point out that deeper engagement and conversions happen when people actually visit a website or platform. Organisations that offer in-depth, high-quality information will continue to attract meaningful traffic. In other words, SEO is still fundamental—just with a renewed focus on user-centric, valuable content across all relevant channels. If you're intrigued by the latest acronyms (SJO, SEO, SGE) or want a clearer understanding of how AI might reshape our industry, this episode is a must-listen. Join Daniel, Ciaran, and Louise as they discuss AI's influence, Google's motivations, and practical steps to stay competitive. Listen now to find out why SEO keeps being declared ‘dead'—and why, in reality, it's more vital than ever. -- You'll find all links on TargetInternet.com Show notes: https://targetinternet.com/resources/how-to-rank-in-chatgpt Have any feedback on the show? Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.05.14.095828v1?rss=1 Authors: Lowe, A., Sjödin, S., Rodrigues, F., Byrne, L., Blennow, K., Tortelli, R., Zetterberg, H., Wild, E. Abstract: Molecular markers derived from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) represent an accessible means of exploring the pathobiology of Huntingtons disease (HD) in vivo. The endo-lysosomal/autophagy system is dysfunctional in HD, potentially contributing to disease pathogenesis and representing a potential target for therapeutic intervention. Several endo-lysosomal proteins have shown promise as biomarkers in other neurodegenerative diseases; however, they have yet to be fully explored in HD. We performed parallel reaction monitoring mass spectrometry analysis (PRM-MS) of multiple endo-lysosomal proteins in the CSF of 60 HD mutation carriers and 20 healthy controls. Using generalised linear models controlling for age and CAG, none of the 18 proteins measured displayed significant differences in concentration between HD patients and controls. This was affirmed by principal component analysis, in which no significant difference across disease stage was found in any of the three components representing lysosomal hydrolases, binding/transfer proteins and innate immune system/peripheral proteins. However, several proteins were associated with measures of disease severity and cognition: most notably amyloid precursor protein, which displayed strong correlations with composite Unified Huntingtons Disease Rating Scale, UHDRS Total Functional Capacity, UHDRS Total Motor Score, Symbol Digit Modalities Test and Stroop Word Reading. We conclude that although endo-lysosomal proteins are unlikely to have value as disease state CSF biomarkers for Huntingtons disease, several proteins demonstrate associations with clinical severity, thus warranting further, targeted exploration and validation in larger, longitudinal samples. Experiences You Should Have Podcast Show Notes: Traveling to the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica with Lynn Smith Interview with Lynn Smith: I interviewed Lynn Smith who is an inspiring adventurer and traveler and I love how she travels! Check out her travel blog for more ideas and also listen to the interview above by pressing the play button or listening wherever you listen to podcasts! Also, check out her post about her trip to the Osa Peninsula here. Where is the Osa Peninsula and What Makes it So Special? Located in the remote and lush Southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, the Osa is approximately 700 square miles, or a bit larger than the city of Houston, TX which is approx 600 square miles. The Osa is bound on the west by the Pacific Ocean, and on the east by the Golfo Dulce (a tropical fiord, over 600 feet deep!) and on the northwest by Drake Bay. Just a few bullet points on what makes the Osa so amazingly unique: You can encounter all four species of monkeys found in Costa Rica (spider, white-faced, squirrel and howler), Poison Dart frogs, Morpho butterflies, anteaters, agouti, coatimundi, agoutis, sloths, parrots, toucans, forest turkeys, exotic waterfowl, jaguars, ocelots, and margays. We saw all but the cats (we did hear a margay at night!), and we also saw many of the more than 460 species of birds, as well as a few snakes, lots of insects, and the footprints of forest peccaries (wild pigs) down on the beach. 2-3% of flora found nowhere else in the world The largest remaining tract of lowland rainforest in Pacific Mesoamerica More than 700 species of trees (which is more than all the Northern temperate regions combined) 140 mammals, including 25 species of dolphins and whales 4 species of sea turtles The largest population of scarlet macaws in Central America ...and the only known place on our planet where populations of both Northern and Southern Humpback whales meet to give birth to their young- in the Golfo Dulce. Lynn's travel plan to the Osa Peninsula Why Go Visit the Osa Peninsula? This is one of the richest and most diverse tropical areas on the planet, known (or not so well known yet!) for its fragile ecosystems and enchanting beauty. The Osa is wild! It's estimated to house 2.5% of the biodiversity of the entire world â while covering less than a thousandth of a percent of its total surface area, earning it the title of the most biologically intense place on earth, according to National Geographic. The Osa Peninsula offers breathtaking, untouched scenery, secluded beaches, and abundant wildlife encompassing lush primary rainforest and a complex system of freshwater and marine resources. These primary and secondary rain forests hold stunning biodiversity, which for us translated to being well off the grid, very remote and removed, and what we most desired--wildlife encounters literally every day we were there! Photo by Lynn Smith When is the Best Time to Visit the Osa Peninsula and What is the Weather Like? The weather and time of year will determine just how relatively easy it is to get to the Osa, and your experience there. I chose early March, just after the tourist "high season" ends and when the costs to get there and stay can be lower. March is still the dry season, and it can be quite hot during the day, with highs well into the 80s. How Do You Get to the Osa Peninsula? Most people fly into the international airport (SJO) in San Jose, the capital. You can rent a car and drive the 5-6 hours on well-paved roads (some are tolls, pay in $US or CR Colons). Lynn planned for them to get to their chosen resort and use it as a base for the day and nighttime excursions into the rain forest. They knew a car wouldn't gain them anything. Plus the driving along those steep, slippery and rough jungle roads was bone-crushing! They scheduled a flight to the Osa from SJO via Sansa Airlines to Puerto Jiminez on the...

On this episode, we dive into the continued chaos incited by Bennett’s violent departure from the church and his expose. Bennett gives voice to the voiceless and Jo slays the character of Sarah Pratt for allegations she made against his character. On this episode, we broach the Bennett meltdown of spring 1842. We read through the first of his exposes published in the Sangamo Journal July 8th. The public explodes at the revelations contained therein. We track everything as it develops chronologically and exhaustively. This marks part 1 of a multi-part series on Bennett and the impact his expose had on Mormon history and doctrine. On this episode, the Sangamo Journal compiles a massive expose of Joe Smith and the Mormons in preparation for Bennett’s serial expose letters. We set the stage by reading a few letter exchanges between Jo and Governor Carlin of Illinois, in a bid to gain total protection from Missouri “persecution”. Carlin’s advice? “Run”! We conclude with reading a number of articles published prior to Bennett’s actual expose which provides a window into Illinois politics circa 1842. “While givers and takers may have equally large networks, givers are able to produce far more lasting value through their networks, and in ways that might not seem obvious." - Adam Grant, author of 'Give and Take: Why Helping Others Drives Our Success'What is something you have done for someone lately with no expectation of anything in return? Do you tend to have a predictable reaction to a problematic situation, or do you tend to respond more pragmatically? How do you define vulnerability, and how is it different from authenticity? Join host Chris Schembra in this week's episode of his podcast series, 7:47 Conversations, as he welcomes entrepreneurial philanthropist, cookie connoisseur, and Editor in Chief of SJO.com, Sol Orwell, whose natural curiosity about and genuine interest in humanity has provided him with many unique and memorable experiences through the interesting people he has met. Am I writing an interesting chapter in my life?"A self-proclaimed "digital nomad," who seeks to do good in the world through knowledge sharing and charitable initiatives, such as his annual Cookie Challenge, Mr. Orwell expresses his views on what makes for an interesting conversation, why he prefers pragmatism over idealism, and his deep appreciation for the value of expertise.Learn about his influences, including Clay Hebert, an inspiring speaker and New York Times bestselling author who has developed a simple framework around 'The Perfect Intro[duction],' and Adam Grant, of the 'Give and Take' principle. It is no exaggeration to say that Sol Orwell knows everyone in fitness. He is on the advisory board for Schwarzenegger.com, has built Examine.com into the world’s biggest supplement information site, and yet, he has only been in the industry for five and a half years. This success is no accident. From SEO to online gaming, Sol has been building and selling businesses based out of his interests since he was 16 and retired twice now. How did he achieve this and what lessons are there for us in the fitness industry? I spent the last week hanging out with Sol in Toronto, and took the opportunity to record an interview on the last day before leaving for the airport. We get stuck into the following topics: Building a business and network through cookies, the importance of letting employees shine, the importance of expressing gratitude daily. Controversies, the importance of seeing the bigger picture when looking to make an impact, and where Sol feels fitness professionals get it wrong. Show notes: - Sol’s entrepreneur journey. – “I make businesses around my interests.” [2’30] - What is examine.com? “We analyze research in nutrition.” [4’30] - On the sensationalistic headlines in the media. [5’15 ] - At what point did you monetize your site? – “For the first 2.5 years, we didn’t make a dime in revenue.” [6’30] - How the business was born out of Reddit. – “There’s a big problem and you do your little bit to solve it.” [8’30] - The business case for staying in the background and letting employees take the limelight. [11’30] - On the insane questions they get asked. [17’30] - Sol’s background and first businesses. From Pakistan to Saudi Arabia to Houston, USA to Toronto. [18’30] - The mistakes people make when networking. How to go about it in a better way. Sol is a truly inspiring example of a guy who’s been working hard to create his own life, according to his terms, since he was very young. His first entrepreneurial venture came at 19 years of age when he started a website focused on web games and he hasn’t looked back since. A handful of failures and a load of successes have proven to Sol that anything he wants to achieve can be achieved with the right kind of hard work and attention to learning the things needed to get it done. You’ll not only hear Sol’s journey from beginning entrepreneur to skilled businessman and website developer, you’ll also get to hear him share his philosophies on things like site layout, utilizing user feedback, what matters most on conversion pages, determining pricing on products and monthly membership subscriptions, life work balance, and much more. The practical tips he shares on the addition of staff while keeping a positive cash flow are worth the time it will take you to listen to this episode, no doubt. And be sure to stick around until the end where Jeremy asks Sol to share his lowest point as an entrepreneur - which turns out to be one of the most dreaded things that could happen: A business partner defrauded him. Jeremy and Sol chat about what it takes to push past something like that, and how he thinks about it today. Sol’s journey out of that dark time and into a better place is inspiring. You won’t want to miss it. As usual, Jeremy’s got a great guest with loads of expertise and a generous heart. Sol unpacks so much on this episode, there’s no way this short post can do it justice. This Week in Costa Rica - Expats Living, Working, and Traveling in Costa Rica
This week I had the pleasure of speaking with Arun (Ernie) Nagratha, CPA, CA, CPA of Trowbridge Professional Chartered Accountants and Tax Advisors to discuss Canadian taxes for expats and those living abroad. Some of our questions and topics include: I understand Canadians can be seen as non-residents. What is a non-resident for tax purposes, how does this effect my citizenship or legal status in Canada? What criteria does one need to met to become a non-resident? What if there is a tax treaty between Canada and the country I go to? How does that impact me? What type of tax return is filed if you intend to become a non-resident? Do Canadians need to pay tax on foreign earned income abroad if one does not become a non-resident? How are Canadians taxed on their assets such as investments in Canada while living abroad? Can Canadians continue to use their Canadian bank accounts after expatriating? What if I live abroad and want to own property in Canada, can I? What if I rent it out what implications does it have? I want to bring my savings back to Canada from abroad, will Canada tax me? Dan Stevens from the Costa Rican times joins me this week to talk about the FATCA delay, Miss Costa Rica 2014, the Chikungunya Virus, a conclusion to the Cuban in limbo in SJO airport, and the possibility that the new presidential jet may have been used by a drug cartel.
