The Superhero Show Show #581Spider-Man the Animated Series: Mysterio's ReturnThe Superhero Show Show: Unmasking Mysterio's Return in “The Haunting of Mary Jane Watson”!This week on The Superhero Show Show, your hosts swing back into the eerie heart of Spider-Man: The Animated Series with season 4, episode 9 — “The Haunting of Mary Jane Watson.” And no, you're not imagining things — Mysterio's Return is real, it's theatrical, and it's just as mind-bending as you'd hope. The team dives deep into this episode's ghostly twists, romantic tension, and one of the show's most atmospheric villains staging a comeback like only he can.Illusions of the Past: Mysterio's Return and the Fracturing of RealityThe conversation kicks off with the hosts marveling at the bold reappearance of Quentin Beck, a.k.a. Mysterio, who was presumed dead but now haunts Mary Jane's dreams—and possibly her reality. They discuss how Mysterio's Return flips the show into near horror territory, with trippy hallucinations, supernatural scares, and MJ slowly unraveling under the weight of visions she can't explain. The podcasters dissect how the show smartly uses Mysterio's talent for illusion to blur the line between psychological thriller and superhero adventure. Is MJ really seeing ghosts? Or is this just another one of Mysterio's elaborate productions? Either way, the hosts agree: it's an episode that plays like The Sixth Sense meets Spider-Man, long before that was cool.Spider-Man, the Protector... and the HauntedAs MJ starts doubting her own sanity, Peter takes center stage as the concerned boyfriend and relentless investigator. The podcasters discuss how the episode deepens Peter and MJ's relationship, showing his emotional support and vulnerability as he tries to shield her from a past neither of them fully understands. The haunting leads to revelations about MJ's missing memories and mysterious disappearance earlier in the series—a thread the hosts are thrilled to see finally tugged. They also spotlight how the episode makes excellent use of gothic set pieces, ghostly lighting, and Danny Elfman-esque music cues to sell the haunted-house vibe. And when Mysterio's Return is finally confirmed, it's a grand, dramatic moment that sends chills — not because he's physically imposing, but because of how well he manipulates fear.Curtain Call: The Phantom of the Soundstage Lives OnIn the closing segment, the hosts give big praise to The Haunting of Mary Jane Watson for raising emotional stakes while honoring its comic book roots. They applaud the decision to bring Mysterio back in a way that feels fresh, emotionally loaded, and uniquely suited to animation's surreal potential. The haunting isn't just about ghosts — it's about trauma, memory, and unresolved loss. And with Mysterio's Return, the show delivers one of its most hauntingly human villains.Links and ResourcesMissed our previous episodes of Spider-Man the Animated Series? We talk about Spider-Man: Far From Home and the things you missed if you don't read the comics. Hear about Quinten Beck, Mysterio, Earth-616, Earth-833, Night-Monkey, and more! Talk with us on Twitter and Reddit. Links from the discussion… Mysterio is named Quentin Beck and in the comics he got his start in special effects for movies. Spider-Man and Tony have some strong connections in the comics, but Tony would never give Peter the EDITH power in any universe. More fun with Spidey's costumes. All you need to know about Peter's Spider (or Spidey) sense. News you can Abuse! The Wasp is an anti-vaxxer! The Moon Knight has some horror movie roots. The third movie will mean bye bye to the Guardians of the Galaxy. Pip the Troll's CGI looked horrible at the end of Eternals, and there was a reason for that. Kevin Smith's top ten Marvel movies!

In the aftermath of Endgame, Peter finds himself at odds with everything he's ever wanted in a world he doesn't understand. Running away from his responsibility as Spider-Man, wanting to spend the summer with his friends in Europe and impress MJ along the way. Being the next leader of the Avengers after losing Tony Stark is the last thing on his mind. However the dreaded Parker luck is a universal constant and the mantle he is about to inherit comes with much more than he knows...and even less that he can see.
The Madames discuss the first half of Spider-Man: Far From Home. They talk about how Quentin Beck, a.k.a. Mysterio, had them completely fooled thanks to a stellar performance by Jake Gyllenhaal. They dive into the maturation of Peter Parker and how his struggle differs from what he dealt with in Homecoming. They share their appreciation for all of Spider-Man's European scenery while theorizing about Aunt May and Happy's budding relationship, as well as wondering if anyone else has ghosted Nick Fury & lived to tell about it. And of course, they shed a few tears for Tony Stark as they explore his relationship with Peter that carries on even in death. Spider-Man: Far From Home is the 11th & final movie of MCU Phase 3. Overall, it is the 23rd & final film of the Infinity Saga. The movie stars Tom Holland, Jake Gyllenhaal, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, Zendaya, Jon Favreau, Samuel L. Jackson, and Cobie Smulders. The Madames discuss the second half of Spider-Man: Far From Home. They rave about Jake Gyllenhaal's manic performance as Quentin Beck, ak.a. Mysterio, and fangirl over all the Elemental effects. They praise the writing of Peter & MJ's relationship, as well as the chemistry between Tom Holland and Zendaya. And they talk about their frantic initial reactions to what they feel is the best stinger scene in the MCU, which features the return of J. Jonah Jameson and Mysterio's reveal of Spider-Man's identity as Peter Parker. To wrap up, they discuss multiverse possibilities for Spider-Man: No Way Home and the upcoming Disney+ show Secret Invasion, featuring Nick Fury. Phase 3, Episode 11 Peter Parker is back and. he's on vacation? It's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man:_Far_From_Home (Spider-Man: Far From Home). Directed by Jon Watts. Starring Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau and Jake Gyllenhaal. After coming down from the high that was the last 45 minutes of Avengers: Endgame, this palette cleanser isn't what the doctor ordered, but we're getting it anyway. Mike works through his dislike of the character that is Ned, through no fault of the actor, Jacob Batalon. Pat finds very little to like in this movie with exception of the action set pieces. But they both agree that Quentin Beck is played extremely well by Jake Gyllenhaal, even if they don't understand his reasons for unveiling Spider-Man's true identity during the end tag. This also marks the end of the Infinity Saga as well as the end of Yet Another MCU Podcast. Mike and Pat bid farewell at the end of the episode, reflecting on the 30 episode adventure they took together. Thanks for listening! But don't despair, we'll still be around...in video form. Quentin Beck aka Mysterio's debut in Spider-Man: Far From Home stole the show and Jake Gyllenhaal's performance as the master of trickery and illusions was praised by fans and critics alike. There is no doubt the MCU already has a slate of awesome villains such as Thanos, Loki and the Vulture (and also a lot of bad ones such as Kaecilius and Malekith), but how well does Mysterio contend against them for the spot of best villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (oh while ignoring the recent news)?

@caracoldepeli

The second installment of Holland’s web-slinging hero brings back the heart, humor, and spectacle of the first whilst turning the knob on the stakes way up. Now that MCU's Spider-Man has swung back into theaters and into our hearts, was the film any good?FFH follows Tom Holland aka Peter Parker tries to navigate life post Avengers:Endgame. For the first time since his introduction, Spider-Man seems to not want the responsibility placed on him as the “next Tony Stark”, he just wants to be a regular kid. Luckily, on a tour of Europe, he finds a mentor in the form of Quentin Beck’s Mysterio, but as we learn in Far From Home, things are more than likely not what they seem!
Jake Gyllenhaal gets to don the "fishbowl" as Quentin Beck, the interdimensional savior of Venice when a giant water monster surfaces to try to destroy the city. Peter Parker (Tom Holland) happens to be there at the time, as he has traveled to Europe for a week-long class trip. Peter, of course, is gifted with superhero powers, but doesn't have the "great responsibility of other incarnations of the character, and would rather just be a teenager and do teenage things, like trying to find a way to express his feelings to his major crush, MJ (Zendaya), doing it atop the Eiffel Tower.. With the Avengers in a sort of disarray, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) assembles Beck, dubbed in the press as Mysterio, with Spider-Man who sees the new hero as a surrogate mentor to live up to in the wake of Tony Stark's demise, in order to stop future scary elementals from coming out of the woodworks again to destroy a major city. Jon Watts directs this MCU release.
Mini review! It's finally here, SPIDER-MAN FAR FROM HOME! The perfect follow up to the smash hit, Avengers Endgame. Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker/Spider-man, as he takes a summer vacation with his school friends; but when Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) comes a callin', Peter finds himself wrapped up in a world ending event. Lucky for Peter, Quentin Beck is here to help...or is he?

Watch out, Theophiloi -- we've got some high voltage coming your way as we dive into the apocryphal Acts of Paul and Thecla. For the first time, we have a real female protagonist who has agency... to the extreme. Join us for an astounding piece of Biblical fanfic, a discussion of why Thecla was left out of the canon (hint: thousands of years of entrenched misogyny), and get ready to be thirsty for virtue when you meet your new favorite semi-Biblical figure. Plus: a very good story about a very large lion. Topics of discussion: "The Lost Scriptures" by Bart Ehrman, a brief divergence into Santa Claus Canon, the real Patron Saint of the Internet, St. Isadore of Seville, Tertullian, Constantine (not that one) and the Hell Bible's version of Corinthians, various apocalypses, Paul's Bulk and Skull, AO1, a stack of virginity pledges reaching to the ceiling of the Flavian Amphitheater, Adrian Toomes, the hat guy, Holy Musk, Quentin Beck, man-eating seals, a surprising substance to see at a beheading, and a litany of podcast recs. Hymnal: "Danger! High Voltage!" by Electric Six Offertory: If you enjoy the show, head to ko-fi.com/apocrypals and send us a love offering! We absolutely appreciate it!
