Extrait : « … In 1979, 2 Tone Records (formed by Coventry, England art student and Specials keyboardist/songwriter Jerry Dammers) exploded into the consciousness of music lovers in Britain, the US, and beyond, as albums by the Specials, the Selecter, Madness, the Beat, and the Bodysnatchers burst onto the charts and a youth movement was born. 2 Tone was black and white: a multiracial force of British and Caribbean musicians singing about social issues, racism, class, and gender struggles. It spoke of injustices in society and fought against right-wing extremism. It was exuberant and eclectic: white youths learning to dance to the infectious rhythm of ska and reggae, crossed with punk attitude, to create an original hybrid. This week's Third Lad, Daniel Rachel, has penned the definitive story of the label that, for a brief, bright burning moment, shaped British, American, and world culture. In this episode we welcome author and Guardian journalist Andy Beckett to RBP's Hammersmith HQ and ask him to discuss politics and pop from the late '70s to the present day. Andy talks about his first musical passions as a teenager in the early '80s, as well as about Rock Against Racism, Red Wedge and the politicised postpunk era in general. He recalls his first pieces for The Independent in the early '90s and explains how his broader interest in popular culture informs his perspective as an op-ed columnist and the author of When the Lights Went Out and Promised You a Miracle. In a week that saw Finland joining NATO and the indictment of Donald Trump, we ask what musicians can and can't do to change the world. The imminent new album from proto-Woke duo Everything But The Girl gives us an opportunity to address the enduring political ideals of Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn, plus we travel back to 1981 via clips from an audio interview with The Beat's David Steele and Ranking Roger, who talk to John Tobler about youth unemployment and the menace of nuclear weapons. After we've paid our respects to departed legends Seymour Stein and Ryuichi Sakamoto, Mark talks us through his new additions to the RBP library, including pieces about the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper, Joan Armatrading, Talking Heads and Sun Ra. Jasper then wraps up the episode with his thoughts on a 2002 live review of Queens of the Stone Age and a 2015 piece exploring the influence of Spaghetti Westerns on reggae. When I first started this podcast, I created a wish-list of potential guests. You would too right?. It's fair to say that Billy Bragg was one of those early entries in my notebook. A musician, author, broadcaster and left-wing activist who fronted the 1980s Red Wedge movement with, among others, Paul Weller. He'a also pretty active as a gigging musician, touring the world, and so tying him down to a recording was always going to be pretty tricky. Here's the other thing that I should mention... On the release of this podcast, Billy is actually the only guest to come on who I have actually interviewed in my former life as a radio presenter. It was one of my absolute career highlights when working at the BBC in the late nineties. He's a hugely talented singer and songwriter. To Have and To Have Not, The Milkman of Human Kindness, Levi Stubbs' Tears, Sexuality, A New England, You Woke Up My Neighbourhood, Between The Wars, We Laughed... I could go on... Billy continues to surprise and delight with his music, to my ears he never seems to repeat himself and much like Paul, is looking to try new things and push himself into new ways of working and creating music. We kick off our chat with his love of The Jam and the influence the band and Paul's lyrics had him as a young man. You'll hear about supporting The Style Council on an early Council Meeting tour to the Red Wedge project where you'll hear there is nothing but warmth and gratitude for Paul's input and collaboration throughout. We'll also chat about connections from the solo years from Go Discs label mates in the nineties to Jools Holland Later TV around A Kind Revolution for Paul and Billy's book Roots, Radicals and Rockers: How Skiffle Changed the World. Most of all throughout our hour-long conversation, you'll hear a man who respects Paul - as a fellow singer / songwriter - as an innovator and as a huge musical talent with an incredible work ethic, vision and back catalogue. In other words, very much like the contents of a mid-80s issue of Jamming! Some specific highlights:Tim Kelly talks about touring Northern Ireland at the height of the 'Troubles' with Crass and D.I.R.T.,Janine talks about being one of the few female fanzine editors of the era, the dark side of which she recounts in the poem 'Lighting Rigged',Richard Edwards talks about confronting Steel Pulse's anti-gay sentiments in an interview for Jamming!, noting that diversity does not always come with equality. And, all four discuss how the values they acquired in the 1980s have stayed throughout their adulthood - and how, despite occasional major setbacks, we have witnessed considerable social progress in our time.Janine Booth is at:www.janinebooth.comwww.youtube.com/janineboothRichard Edwards contributes regularly to:https://www.soul-source.co.uk/Tim Kelly is at https://www.facebook.com/tim.kelly.7330Tony Fletcher's One Step Beyond podcast on Equal Playing Field:https://shows.acast.com/onestepbeyond/episodes/ep-28-equal-playing-field-first-halfhttps://shows.acast.com/onestepbeyond/episodes/ep-29-equal-playing-field-second-halfThe Best of Jamming!: Selections and Stories from the Fanzine That Grew Up 1977-86 is published by Omnibus Press and available as of Sep 23 '21 in the UK/EU; Dec 2 in the rest of the world.TonyFletcher.netOmnibusPress.com 'The Jamming! My guest this week is the fabulous musician, turned award-winning author, Daniel Rachel. He wrote his first book, Isle of Noises: Conversations with Great British Songwriters after spending his twenties as the lead-singer in Rachels Basement. The book featured interviews with the likes of Paul Weller, Jimmy Page, Robin Gibb, Ray Davies, Annie Lennox, Noel Gallager and many more. His 2017 Book Walls Come Tumbling Down: the music and politics of Rock Against Racism, 2 Tone and Red Wedge - which won the Penderyn Music Book prize - charts the pivotal period between 1976 and 1992 that saw politics and pop music come together for the first time in Britain's musical history; musicians and their fans suddenly became instigators of social change, and 'the political persuasion of musicians was as important as the songs they sang'. The follow up in 2019 Don't Look Back in Anger: The rise and Fall of Cool Britannia was an Evening Standard and Metro Book of the Year. Daniel and I dig in to these incredible historical documents to talk about some key periods in the career of Paul Weller with stories of Red Wedge from the 1980s and Cool Britannia and his return to the top of the charts in the 1990s. My good friend Sarah Jane Morris is a singer with an astonishing vocal range. She is probably best known for her stellar recordings with Jimi Somerville in The Communards, but her 40-year career is so much more diverse than that… Over the decades she has developed a loyal and loving international audience (particularly in Italy), and her rich contralto voice goes from strength to strength. She has performed with a diverse range of groups, from rock to soul to African blues, with classical orchestras, a one-hundred cello ensemble, with acoustic guitars and jazz big bands. Her voice, her versatility, and her emotional intelligence - the absolute authenticity of feeling which she conveys - make her a world-class, treasured and highly compelling performer. Her guest appearances on various live and recorded BEF projects have been exceptional, and Martyn produced her 1992 album Heaven. She is a committed socialist and activist, and, like Martyn, was a member of Red Wedge supporting the Labour Party in the mid 80's Ladies and Gentlemen – I give you great Sarah Jane Morris…

Norman Washington "Junior" Giscombe (born 6 June 1957) is an English singer-songwriter (frequently known simply by the mononym, Junior) who was one of the first British R&B artists to be successful in the United States. He is best known for his 1982 hit single, "Mama Used to Say". CAREERGiscombe was born in Wandsworth, London, and was a backing vocalist with Linx between 1980 and 1982. When turning towards a solo career, he was first billed simply as Junior and he scored a #7 hit in the UK Singles Chart in 1982, with "Mama Used to Say". His follow-up single, "Too Late" also made the Top 20 in the UK. "Mama Used to Say" was also a Top 40 Pop hit and Top 5 R&B in the United States, earning him a "Best Newcomer" award from Billboard magazine. Sometime (most likely) around 1984 and 1985, Junior Giscombe recorded (and very possibly co-wrote) an unknown number of songs with Phil Lynott, the former leader, vocalist and bass player of hard rock band Thin Lizzy. Lynott died in January 1986 and the songs were never officially released. Most remain as demos, but one of the songs, "Lady Loves to Dance", was mastered and nearly released before being pulled by the record company. Some of the songs are available on YouTube, including "What's the Matter Baby" (Giscombe provides backing vocals) and "Time (and Again)" (Giscombe shares vocals with Lynott). After a period outside the charts, he made a brief return to the Top 10 in 1987 when he sang a duet with Kim Wilde on "Another Step (Closer to You)". He also became involved with the formation of Red Wedge in 1986 with Billy Bragg, Jimmy Somerville and Paul Weller, and had been a part of The Council Collective with The Style Council, Jimmy Ruffin and others for the 1984 fundraising single, "Soul Deep" and in 1992 appeared on stage at the 1992 Labour rally in SheffieldSheffield_Rally singing Curtis Mayfield's[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtis_Mayfield ([1])] 'Move on Up'. Later Giscombe became better known as a songwriter for various artists, including Sheena Easton. He is currently a DJ with internet radio station Solarradio.com, although he is not listed on their website. Giscombe is the uncle of British comedian Richard Blackwood, who sampled "Mama Used to Say" on his single "Mama – Who Da Man" in June 2000. www.juniorgiscombe.co.uk www.joekelleyradio.com Originally aired February 23rd, 2006

When most people think of Billy Bragg they probably think of the political firebrand who championed the miners' strike in Wales in '84/'85, and who in the mid-'80s founded Red Wedge, a coalition of musicians who aimed to engage a younger generation in politics in the hope of ousting Margaret Thatcher. But there has always been much more to Billy than his politics, and we talk about some of the misconceptions about his reputation in this interview. We also discuss fatherhood, his work with artists like Wilco, what it was like being around for the birth of punk rock, why he sticks clear of cynics, his involvement in helping rehabilitate prisoners in the UK and so much more.

Mariella Frostrup is joined by former personal assistant to Nelson Mandela, Zelda la Grange; comedian John Moloney and country-blues musician Rattlesnake. Zelda la Grange grew up in South Africa as a white Afrikaner who supported the rules of segregation. Yet just a few years after the end of apartheid she became Nelson Mandela's trusted assistant for the next 19 years. In her book, Good Morning, Mr Mandela, she tells the story of how a young woman had her life, beliefs and prejudices transformed by the President of South Africa. Good Morning, Mr Mandela is published by Allen Lane. Rattlesnake Annie - known as Rattlesnake - is a country-blues musician. Born of Cherokee heritage on a cotton and tobacco farm in Paris, Tennessee, she began writing songs at 10 and soon afterwards formed a trio with her cousins, The Gallimore Sisters. At16 she was lured to Memphis by blues and rock n' roll where she learnt her craft under the tutelage of Muddy Waters and Lightnin' Hopkins. Her latest album is called World Of Love. John Moloney is a stand-up comedian. He is co-founder of the Balham Comedy Festival which is celebrating 30 years of London's comedy club, Banana Cabaret. Acts performing include Reginald D. Hunter, Susan Calman and Milton Jones. A former language teacher before turning to comedy, John cut his teeth on the Red Wedge tour during the 1980s and became a regular at London's Comedy Store. His new series will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 later this year.
