Today's episode, “Anna Moffo und die leichte Muse,” continues the delicious theme of opera singers “letting down their hair” begun with “Hadley in Wien,” and it also forms a complement and a supplement to the “Anna Moffo Reappraised” episode that I published exactly two years ago. Anna Moffo's recording career divides into three separate eras and markets: Italy in the late 1950s and early 1960s; which overlapped with the US in the 1960s; and finally Germany in the 1970s and beyond. Each of these eras in the Moffo career was represented on disc in different ways: jazz arrangements of standards from the Great American Songbook in her earliest (and rarest) Italian recordings, followed by breathy Italian pop songs (some even composed by Moffo herself); early twentieth century Broadway operettas and MGM movie musicals in the US when her voice was at its peak; and Viennese operetta for the German-speaking market, as her vocal instrument became more fragile, while it still represented her finest work of that period. Each of these eras and genres is thoroughly explored in this episode. She is partnered in all of this repertoire by some impressive co-stars: Sergio Franchi, René Kollo, Rudolf Schock, and Robert Merrill as duet partners, with musical direction by Ennio Morricone, Henri René, Lehman Engel, and Skitch Henderson. Recordings range from 1960 through 1983, with the vast majority coming from the 1960s. In spite of the vocal and technical frailty displayed in the later recordings, Moffo's ability to communicate in this repertoire never flagged. And of course throughout her entire career, no singer so consistently presented a more striking image of vocal and physical glamour than did Anna Moffo. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Yesterday was World AIDS Day and many of the people I admire and follow on various social media platforms made beautiful and heartfelt posts in commemoration of this day and all the many souls that have been lost over the decades to this hideous disease. I want to weigh in today with my own tribute: to the exceptional American baritone John Reardon, who died of this disease in 1988 at the age of 58. This is an expanded version of a bonus episode I published more than four years ago which constituted a deep exploration of his recorded legacy, in both live or studio recordings, of musical, opera (especially contemporary works), and art song. You'll hear guest contributions from the two Judys, (Raskin and Blegen; sorry, no Garland today), as well as Jo Sullivan, Beverly Wolff, Anja Silja, Evelyn Lear, and James McCracken, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, Thomas Beecham, Sarah Caldwell, Erich Leinsdorf, Frederic Waldman, Lehman Engel, Jorge Mester, as well as that great stage director Bliss Hebert doing a guest turn tickling the ivories in two song cycles. If you listen extra closely, you may even hear a line or two from Beverly Sills, Robert Merrill, Cesare Siepi, and Jussi Björling! The episode also includes a birthday tribute to Maria Callas and, as a memorial to all who have succumbed to AIDS, “When Angels Cry,” a song by Janis Ian.   JOHN CLAUDE GUMMOE I suppose it's usually not done, but I've decided to write this biography of myself in the first person, so actually, it's my autobiography. It just felt too odd to be writing about myself as though I were someone else. So here goes. I was born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 2nd, 1938 to John Corwin Gummoe and Beulah Foy Harris. John, my father, was the son of James Alfred Gummoe who came to America from Cornwall, England about 1880. I'm told that he jumped ship in New York, but did eventually become a naturalized citizen about 20 years after coming here. My mother also came from English ancestry and her side of the family goes all the way back to the early 1600's and The New Haven Colony and The Massachusetts Bay Colony. Seems like so many people today are searching for their roots and I'm no exception. I've been bitten by the bug and along with music, genealogy has become one of my passions. As a young lad, I first began singing at the kitchen sink with my much older sisters. My mother had me at the ripe old age of 38. When I arrived, there were already three sisters in thier teens. They were very much into the big band sound. Later on, in the sixth grade, I joined Mrs. Clark's Boys Chorus. She seemed to like me and my voice (boy soprano), and she often had me doing solo efforts in school pageants. One year, a touring company from The New York Metropolitan Opera came to town with the opera "Carmen". It starred Risa Stevens and Robert Merrill and Richard Tucker and Mrs. Clark's boys were chosen to be the street urchins in the first act. Very exciting stuff for a 6th grader; costumes, make-up, big stage. It was truly awesome. We had to learn our part in French and we were to be sort of mimicking the soldiers in that scene. On into my teens, I drove my friends and family crazy as I was always singing with everything on the radio, on records or whatever. They were always telling me to keep quiet so they could hear the music. Little did they know, or I for that matter, that I would one day compose one of the biggest and most successful pieces of music in pop/rock history and actually record it with my own group, The Cascades. Last year, Broadcast Music, Inc. named my song "Rhythm of the Rain", the 9th most performed song of the last century. My sincere thanks to radio DJ's everywhere for all the plays. You are all much appreciated. At 18 years of age, fresh out of high school, I had always dreamed of going to Ohio State University to study Veterinary Medicine, but there was just no money to be had for that and my grades, though not bad, were not high enough for a scholarship. Fate had other "ships" in store for me as off to the U.S. Navy I went for four years. That turned out to be exactly what I was meant to do as in San Diego, aboard the U.S.S. Jason, AR-8 is where I met two talented and wonderful guys ; David Wilson and Leonard Green . I'm proud to say that throughout the years, we still remain fast friends, although just a few months ago, sadly, we lost David to cancer. Needless to say I will miss him very much. David was a drummer and singer, Len played guitar and also sang, but more than that Len was a talented composer and quite an inspiration to me to give writing a try. These two men helped me more than anybody I can think of, to drag a shy, insecure young man into the joys of creating music. To you both I'll always be grateful. Your encouragement and friendship has and will always be treasured. It's been an honor and a previlage to have had you in my life. My association with David and Len and the others that made up first, The Silver Strands, and then, The Thundernotes, and finally, The Cascades began with my taking over managing and booking the group. I was their biggest fan and at the point, had not done anything on stage. But, after much encouragement from David and Len, I began getting up on stage with David for some duets; mostly Everly Bros hits and similar two part harmony songs. I was frightened to death at first, but it was'nt long before I was performing solo with the group. Around that time, after watching Len create song after song, I though to myself, "Hey John, I bet you can do that too, if you try!" And so I began writing lyrics, and again with encouragement from Len and David, I began the process of learning to play a musical instrument. I'd had little music training and my first instrument was the vibes, or vibraharp. You know, that big thing with metal keys that you strike with mallets. Well, it has the same keyboard as a piano so it was a natural progression to go there as time went on. Thanks to good genes from Mom and Dad and ancestors passed, I was also blessed with a natural ear for harmony, thus, learning chords came easy to me. So it wasn't long before I was singing, composing, writing and performing as a full fledged member of the band. Shortly before signing our recording contract, we lost Len Green. He decided, for reasons that to this day remain personal, to leave the group to persue other endeavors including going on to become a staff writer with Acuff-Rose Publishing in Nashville and evenually being nominated for his composition of "Slow Country Dancing". You can read and hear all about it by linking up to his web page which you can do from here. Our then manager, Andy Di Martino came and told us that Valiant Records was interested in us, and so with new guitarist, Eddy Snyder we moved on without Len Green. Thus began our whirl-wind climb to the top of the record charts; a period that even now feels like it was all a dream. A dream come true though, none the less. It was magical!! The chemistry was perfect. The group had a perfect sound for the era. We were recording at the famous Gold Star Studios, home of Phil Spectors "wall of sound" with the legendary Stan Ross engineering, Barry De Vorzon producing, Perry Botkin Jr. arranging and behind our smooth vocal sound was probably the best group of studio musicians available; including Hal Blaine on drums, Carol Kaye on bass, Glen Campbell (yes, the now famous Glen Campbell) on guitar. How could we go wrong? And of course, as rock and roll history attests, we didn't go wrong. I'm still composing, still singing and I hope I always will be. Here in my 63rd year on this earth, I feel like I'm better than I've ever been and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the record buyers, all the Cascade Fans (and there are still many around) and radio, especially Oldies radio for keeping my little ditty on rotation at your respective stations. I'm very grateful!!. It's a great time to be alive and have this wonderful technology around so I can share my story and my thoughts with the entire world. WOW!! Hope those of you visiting my web site are enjoying this as much as I've enjoyed putting it together... With much appreciation......... John Claude Gummoe, Composer of "Rhythm of the Rain" and lead singer with The Cascades. Write to me with your questions and/or comments at RAINSONG4U@AOL.COM

While he is recognized as one of film's best-known tough guys, Robert Davi has been winning the respect and admiration of fans, critics and fellow artists with his expressive singing. His album, Davi Sings Sinatra: On The Road To Romance, produced by the legendary Phil Ramone, catapulted its way into Billboard magazine's top ten (#6) traditional jazz chart. While Davi Sings Sinatra: On the Road to Romance and his dynamic performances may have surprised some of his fans, Davi's love of music and entertaining began at an early age. At 15, he won First Place in the prestigious New York State School Music Association Solo Competition. As a young adult, he studied under several top vocal teachers including the legendary Tito Gobbi, Dan Ferro of Juilliard, Samuel Margolis (who taught Robert Merrill) and renowned vocal coach Gary Catona. From the memorable villain, Colombian drug lord Frank Sanchez, in the Bond film "License to Kill" (voted one of the top Bond villains of all time) to his stand-out performances in "The Goonies," "Die Hard," "Kill the Irishman," "The Iceman" and many other films to the respected series "Profiler" and "Stargate: Atlantis," Davi has appeared in over 100 movies and many television programs. He has garnered praise from critics, directors and co-stars, including Steven Spielberg, Richard Donner, Blake Edwards, John McTiernan, and Paul Verhoeven. He has acted opposite Marlon Brando, Roberto Benigni, Bruce Willis, Clint Eastwood, Benicio Del Toro, Danny Glover, Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, James Franco, and Val Kilmer, among others. GQ Magazine has compared him to silver screen classics Robert Mitchum and Lee Marvin. His tough exterior masks an inner sensitivity, which he has brought to his roles as a Palestinian terrorist in the award-winning TV movie, "Terrorist on Trial: The United States vs. Salim Ajami," and in memorable appearances in "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "Without a Trace," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," "Criminal Minds" and many more. In 2007, Davi produced, directed co-wrote and starred in "The Dukes," the story of a successful Doo Wop group who falls on hard times. At the Monte Carlo Festival of Comedy, Davi was awarded Best First-Time Director and Best Screenplay for the film and he was the only first-time director in the Premiere Section of the International Rome Film Festival, with films by Sean Penn, Robert Redford, Sidney Lumet and Julie Taymor. Hailing from Astoria, Queens, NY, Davi attended Hofstra University on a drama scholarship. He moved to Manhattan to study with legendary acting coach Stella Adler, who became his mentor. He subsequently became a lifetime member of the Actors Studio, studying with acting teacher Lee Strasberg and also studied under Sandra Seacat, Larry Moss, Milton Katselas, Martin Landau, Mala Powers, and George Shdanoff, the creative partner and collaborator with the influential Michael Chekhov. His first screen appearance was opposite Frank Sinatra in the telefilm, "Contract on Cherry Street." Besides working in music, film and television, and raising his five children, four dogs, and two cats, Davi is an active supporter of The Dream Foundation, Exceptional Children's Foundation, Heart of a Child Foundation, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Youth Foundation, The Humane Society of the United States, Heart of a Horse, NIAF, The Order 'Sons of Italy' in America (OSIA), and UNICO National. Since its inception in 1998, Davi has been the National Spokesperson for i-Safe America, which is regarded by many internet experts as the most complete internet safety program in the country and is available in grades K- 12 in all 50 U.S. states. Davi has received numerous awards for career achievement and community involvement, including the George M. Estabrook Distinguished Service Award from the Hofstra University Alumni Association (past recipients include Francis Ford Coppola and William Safire). He has received the FBI's Man of the Year Award in Los Angeles and was also named KNX radio's "Citizen of the Week" for saving a young girl from a fire in her home. Other public service awards include the Sons of Italy's Royal Court of the Golden Lion Award and the 2004 STEP Award (Science, Technology and Education Partnership), whose past recipients include Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 2007, Davi received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Italian Board of Governors in New York, and in 2008, he received the Italo-Americano Award from the Capri-Hollywood Festival. In 2011, Davi was awarded the "Military Order of the Purple Heart" (MOPH) Special Recognition Award for dedication and service honoring America's service members and veterans. In 2015, Davi appeared in a music video for Bob Dylan's recording of "The Night They Called It a Day" from Dylan's album Shadows in the Night, , a collection of songs which had been recorded by Frank Sinatra. Rolling Stone suggested that Davi's role in the video may have been a nod towards Davi's having made his acting debut alongside Sinatra in the crime film "Contract on Cherry Street," and Davi's release of his own album of Sinatra covers.

Despite its disastrous premiere in 1816 — complete with raucous heckling, a bloody nose and a stray cat scampering across the stage — Rossini’s The Barber of Seville quickly joined the ranks of the best-loved and most-performed operas in the world. Based on the first of a trilogy of plays by the French writer Pierre Beaumarchais (the second of which is The Marriage of Figaro), Barber is full of characters and tunes that have delighted audiences for centuries. In this episode, the He Sang/She Sang team talks with WQXR morning show host Jeff Spurgeon about why Figaro’s memorable aria “Largo al factotum” is a baritone’s “calling card” aria and how Rossini’s music has found its way into movies, TV commercials and everyone’s favorite Saturday morning cartoons. Jeff Spurgeon's YouTube pick: (Note: this podcast was recorded shortly before we learned of the death of soprano Roberta Peters. Arias in the Arena: Are Sporting Events Good for Opera?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2014 16:04

We're halfway into 2014 and opera has already worked its way into three of the year's biggest athletic events. For those keeping score, there was Renée Fleming's pop-tinged version of the national anthem at the Super Bowl; Anna Netrebko's take on the Olympic Anthem during the opening the Sochi Olympics; and on July 11th, two days before the finale of the World Cup, longtime soccer fan Placido Domingo will perform a concert in Rio de Janeiro with soprano Ana Maria Martinez (and pianist Lang Lang). This is reportedly Domingo's sixth World Cup appearance, the first being at the 1990 World Cup in Rome with the Three Tenors (with Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti). Other famous examples in the sporting canon include baritone Robert Merrill's regular anthem performances with the New York Yankees and soprano Montserrat Caballé's gaudy tribute to her hometown at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. So who gets the medal for best operatic performance in this year's stadium events? And just how did this happen? In this week's podcast we talk with two experts: Anne Midgette, the classical music critic of the Washington Post Joseph Horowitz, a veteran concert programmer and author of 10 books including Classical Music in America: A History of Its Rise and Fall Segment Highlights On the Similarities Between Opera and Sports Fandom: Midgette: I would say opera and sports are a natural pairing. Being an opera fan is very much like being a sports fan: you're looking for the highs and lows, you're rooting for your favorites, you're waiting to see if they're going to trip up. There's a real element of fandom, as everyone who love opera knows.      Anna Netrebko at the Olympics vs. Renee Fleming at the Super Bowl: Horowitz: I was kind of surprised that [Fleming] sang with such exaggerated sincerity. I thought the whole thing was pretentious and over-the-top... I was reminded of seeing Pavarotti at Madison Square Garden. I thought they both sounded a little dutiful and self-conscious. Midgette: I was of two minds. In a way, [Fleming] pulled it off but in a way I do agree that it certainly wasn't her best self. Neither was an example of those singers at their vintage best. They were fine at what they did but neither struck a great blow for classical music.   The impact of the Three Tenors: Midgette: Whatever you thought of the Three Tenors phenomenon, it had a lot of spark and oomph and it was fun and irreverent and a little trashy. That's why the Three Tenors took off the way they did.   On whether televised sporting events can take over the role of promoting opera to the masses: Horowitz: There was a time when NBC and CBS had their own orchestras. NBC had an opera company, very different from what we associate with Great Performances on PBS. It did opera in English, it did adventurous stagings, it commissioned operas. So if you're looking back as far as the '40s and '50s, it's a different world and in many ways, a much more inspiring world for culture. Listen to the full segment above and tell us what you think: What's been the greatest stadium performance by an opera singer? Please leave your comments below.

The album is a mix of originals and standards. Ron has two of his own originals, Sophia and For Pete's Sake ,for the late bassist & close friend Pete Chivily. Although none of the 12 cuts are tunes that Blakey recorded, Ron confesses that in writing for this project Blakey's Jazz Messengers kept popping into his head. when drummer Vince Cherico came to the session and asked Ron "what type of feel do you want?" Ron said one word "Blakey!"  Ron is currently working on an album with vocalist Tony Yezzo. The producer is bassist Al Cardillo, who collaborated with Ron on the writing.
