With an unprecedented four Juno awards for songwriter of the year, Jim Vallance is one of Canada's pre-eminent songwriters and the creative force behind top tracks for artists like Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Joe Cocker and Glass Tiger. He played drums with the Vancouver band Prism, and wrote their first single, Spaceship Superstar (which was played on the Discovery Space Shuttle). After touring with Prism,  he became a session musician before a chance meeting with 18-year-old Bryan Adams determined his songwriting career direction. The two began a fruitful decades-long songwriting collaboration.  Adams's album, Cuts Like a Knife, yielded three hit singles co-written with Vallance, and reached platinum. The follow-up album Reckless cemented the Vallance-Adams writing partnership in the annals of rock music. No. 1 on the Canadian and U.S. album charts, it sold five times platinum, with six Vallance co-writes in the Top 15, including the duo's first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, Heaven; and the No. 1 Mainstream Rock tracks Run To You and Somebody. Vallance concentrated on songwriting, penning a non-stop stream of hit rock ballads, including the now-famous chart-topping charity single Tears Are Not Enough, a collaboration with Adams and fellow Canadian producer David Foster. Jim's creative talent has benefitted top international acts like Pat Benatar, Roger Daltry, Neil Diamond, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Joan Jett, The Go-Go's, Rick Springfield, Tina Turner,  Rod Stewart, Anne Murray, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Chilliwack, Loverboy, Toronto, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, KISS and The Scorpions. Vallance went on to collaborate with Adams on songs for the Broadway show Pretty Woman: The Musical. He has served on the boards of SOCAN, the Songwriters Association of Canada, and FACTOR, is a member of the Order of Canada, and boasts 22 SOCAN Classic awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award.

I was booking the Rock 'N Roll Café on Bleecker Street, Ricky was already a rockstar, center stage as lead guitarist with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, playing those iconic riffs in the fab MTV Music Video Days... when there were ashtrays on restaurant tables, and MTV played music videos. Just found a great pic of Ricky and Elliot Easton sitting in on our tiny stage in '87ish. All those years ago, and yet how fun to have seen Elliot play live last week with The Immediate Family and Zoom tonight with Ricky. One big difference, both Ricky and I are sober. 36 years for him, and the last many, being of service and giving back with his time, and his music. His current passion, partnering with AllSober.com to aid those struggling with addiction to gain inspiration from their sober heroes. He treated us to his Ain't Gonna Live Like That No More to punctuate the point. Ricky received the Drug-Free Heroes Award, presented by the Foundation For a Drug-Free World, The Faces and Voices 2019 Voice of Recovery Award, and the 2019 Italian American of Distinction Award, presented by Governor Cuomo, for his work in recovery. This Rockboy walks his talk. Old friends, it was an easy breezy walk down memory lane, littered with one-liners, and rim shots. Ricky may be a rocker but he's a Borscht Belt comic at heart. Fabulous stories about touring with Graham Parker, Roger Daltry, and Ian Hunter, the thrill of playing THAT riff from All the Young Dudes, having Simon Kirke of Bad Company behind him hitting those beats, backing Brian Wilson, sitting next to MeatLoaf watching his hero Jeff Beck, both of them weeping. We talked quite a bit about Beck, and Townshend, Eddie Van Halen, John Mayer, Albert King, the old days of the Filmore East, The Academy of Music, the Humble Pie, J Geils Band, and Black Oak Arkansas show we both were at when we were babies. Speaking of the Babys, we talked John Waite, Ricky's old, my new friend, and his hysterical speech whilst being inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. Why she didn't much react behind him, and looking past the front row where Paul and Ringo, his raison d'etre for becoming a musician sat with Funk 49s, Joe Walsh. And then, sharing the stage with them - and his great interactions with both Paul and Ringo. Ricky's fan love for his heroes is so relatable and fun to witness. Ricky's Rhapsody in Blues - An Instrumental Tribute to Jeff Beck is spectacular as are his other WIcked Cool released singles, Louanne, Alien, and Glamdenic Blues, and they're available here: https://www.rickybyrd.com We got the story behind each and why he requests we download rather than stream. I did as soon as we got off the interweb. I adore my old friend. I so enjoyed every second and every word of this conversation. It was such a treat to spend time again in his great company. Simon Kirke of Bad Company Live on Game Changers With Vicki I was Live with Simon Kirke, co-founder of Free and Bad Company, two of the greatest rock bands in history. A huge lifelong fan, it was a thrill to sit down and hear how it all went down, including how Snuffy, a guitar player kinda close to my heart, ended up playing on Free's Heartbreaker. We heard about Simon's very humble beginnings with neither running water nor electricity, talk about building character, his transistor radio, listening to big bands, pre-Beatles, making his own drumsticks, and finding his way back to London from the countryside with a time limit to make it and joining Paul Kossoff's Black Cat Bones just under the wire. How they formed Free, All Right Now, the song that made them, and perhaps, destroyed them. The unrelenting touring, and then Kosoff's unrelenting drugs. How the band evolved before imploding. Ultimately, in part, morphing into Bad Company, one of the greatest straight-up rock bands of all time with Simon co-writing its anthem. He's the only member of the band to be in every lineup since its inception, including the band's last tour. We heard about them all. Thrilling! I so love Simon's solo effort, All Because of You, written for Maria, his wife of 6 years. Reminiscent of Roger Daltry for me, it's in heavy rotation in my kitchen. He's guested on recordings by Wilson Pickett, Jim Capaldi, and Ron Wood, and has toured with Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band. The best with the best. We heard great stories about Chuck, Ringo, Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce, Dave Mason, and of course, Kossoff and Rodgers. We talked at length about addiction––the drinking, the drugs, the debauchery, some great stories there, and recovery, tried more than once, and how it was too long ago for Kossoff. But, has gratefully stuck for Simon, who is doing much to give back. Simon works with Road Recovery, aiding teens to get and hopefully stay sober, is on the board of a Rehab facility, Right Turn, and is in the process of writing a Rock Opera about recovery with its CEO. Simon fears with Paul Rodgers' health issues, this is the end of Bad Company after 50 years. He's scored a few films and looks forward to a lot more of that in his future, mirroring another musician turned composer we know who's fared pretty well. They say, be careful meeting your heroes. No worries here. Simon Kirke exceeded all my very high (but sober) hopes, as a person and a rock star. What fun! Can't Get Enough! Chic with Nile Rodgers, People, CNN, ABC, BET, FOXMusic & Munchies is My Show Theme This Week: Soul Snacks Cookie Company! Music for this Segment: CHIC featuring Nile Rodgers - Let's Dance(Live At The House Sídney 2013)Everyone wants to be a leader in a world where people don't often possess the experience or expertise to be in the lead. That is gained from mastering the skills and learning to follow. Ralph Rolle is a prime example of learning to follow becoming born to lead.Ralph followed his older brother in learning the drums, but that he led him to becoming a premier musician, who has created music with everyone from super producer Nile Rodgers and his iconic disco/R&B group Chic, pop legends Sting and Bono, the 1st woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Aretha Franklin, hip-hop giants Biggie Smalls and Queen Latifah, jazz superstar Chris Botti, the queen of Neo-Soul Erykah Badu, Vanessa Williams, soul crooner D'Angelo, songstylist India Arie, Lady Gaga, Dolly Pardon, Bono, Roger Daltry, John Legend, Joss Stone, Elvis Costello and playing in the resident band for N.B.C. ‘It's Showtime at The Apollo' for over 15 seasons. Ralph has also served as the musical director for syndicated “The Caroline Rhea Show” and he served in the same role for Japanese R&B/soul superstar Toshi Kubota. Ralph stepped out into the world of music because he was following his brother, who was following the lead of his mother, who brought a set of drums into the house to keep her rambunctious sons out of the streets and out of trouble. Ralph's brother Howard told him that he couldn't disturb the set-up of the drums, even though Ralph was left-handed and his brother was not. But they both listened to every kind of music, from gospel and jazz, and for Ralph, Motown's heyday of music, with the Supremes and the Miracles and the brilliance of the Temptations blew his mind and lead him on a path that took him around the world, playing on stages and in clubs that were the site of some of the greatest moments in music history. He followed him passion around the world and then followed his heart when a new dream, a new vision, rose up in him and began to change his course in life.Ralph took the time, any time he had the time, to stop and cook and enjoy life. It helped him to come down from the tension and time on the road that was always in motion. Cooking, another gift he received from his mother, gave him the peace of mind he needed to slow down and breathe. And in learning his way around the kitchen, he started to bake. He followed his grandmother in and around the kitchen while she cooked but being a smart young boy, Ralph paid attention. He watched the details of making his favorites, including rushing to lick the bowl after she mixed her famous cake and over time, he mastered baking. It soon became his happy place, but also his calling card. If he liked a girl, he didn't sing her a song or show off his drumming skills. He would bake for her. That stayed with him and when he was hanging out with his musician friends, he would have his signature cookies. At first they laughed, but quickly the request became “please bring those cookies with you!”Over time, his cookies found their way into the hands of clients such as Westside Market, Franks Market, and many more. Good Morning America host chose Soul Snacks for her holiday gifting in 2011. In 2015, Bette Midler and Ralph met when Nile Rodgers and Chic were the guest artists and Ms. Midler's annual Hulaween Charity event. Ralph had his “cookie calling card” with him. Ms. Midler loved Soul Snacks so much that she placed orders for her family and friends. Soon, he was selling his cookies at Melba's, a legendary soul food restaurant in Harlem. That arrangement became a business that quickly took off because one night someone from BET's YSB Magazine did a story of this musician who worked at the Apollo Theater and was also a baker. The only number he could post was his sister's pager number. She didn't think he would get too many calls to handle. They were both wrong. The orders poured in and soon, he was featured in CNN, BET, ABC and FOX networks, in New York Times newspaper and in The Source and Vibe magazines. From there, Ralph gave birth to “SOUL SNACKS.”SOUL SNACKS offers a variety of delicious cookies such as Georgia Oatmeal Raisin, Peanut Peanut Butter, Down Home Double Chocolate Chip, Ebony and Ivory Almond Cookie, Grampy's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie, French Cocoa Chocolate Chip, Miami Raisin Walnut, Chunked Up Chocolate Walnut, Cranberry Oatmeal Raisin, Joyful Gingerbread and the most recently added, but now #1 seller, Sweet Potato Cookies. “Inside of every cookie is years of heart, soul and lots of pride that has been the main ingredient of SOUL SNACKS Cookies for over a decade.” The company has recently upgraded into a new and larger facility and is now being sold in nearly 800 Walmart stores. Soul Snacks have also satisfied customers in Japan, Europe, Africa, The West Indies, Canada, and throughout The United States.“There is no expiration date on passion and there is no Plan B!” Ralph offers, with a smile on his face, realizing that it takes a lot to maintain the business while still loving music and working on new and innovative ideas, like a history project that is becoming his newest passion. “Passion is not predicated on how much money you make. Passion is about whether you finish the thought. The completion of the task and making it happen is the truth of passion. Making it happen. You've got to learn from where you failed and get up and keep going from here.”Now, he speaks to entrepreneurs and creatives in his Master Class series and empowers them to dream and keep dreaming, even when they are already working on their gifts. “When people get in their own way, when they build their own wall, I am trying to get people to see the value in (YOU). I am always talking to people about getting out of the way. That is when they start to see the world and the possibilities of everything. I've got 24 hours in a day and this is all Plan A!” The music journey is Ralph Rolle's peace place, a creative thing that he gets to do from the seat of the drummer, on his own. As the CEO of SOUL SNACKS, Ralph gets to bring others forward, including his wife Hiromi and his community. “SOUL SNACKS is about my wife and my manager and my P.A. who believe in the work and we work collectively on the dream! SOUL SNACKS was never done alone and cannot be.”All Rights Reserved © 2023 Building Abundant Success!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Face Dances is the ninth studio album from the Who, and the first release after the death of drummer Keith Moon three years earlier.  During those three years the Who would release the film Quadrophenia and the concert retrospective film The Kids Are Alright.  Front man Roger Daltry would try out acting, and Pete Townshend would release his second solo studio album.  When the group got back together for Face Dances, Phil Collins expressed an interest in joining the band.  However, Kenny Jones (Small Faces, Faces) had already been asked to join.  John “Rabbit” Bundrick also contributed keyboard work on this album, and would eventually join as a full time member of the Who.  These joined previous members Daltry, Townshend, and bassist John Entwistle.  The album was highly anticipated, and was a commercial success, reaching number 4 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and number 2 on the UK Albums chart.  Critical reviews were mixed at the time, and the band has expressed some friction with producer Bill Szymczyk who conducted the final mixing without the full band's input.  Regardless, the album is a staple of early 80's rock and many of the songs have achieved a timelessness about them.Brian brings us this album for today's podcast. You Better You BetThe first single and lead-off track to the album was a staple of the new cable station - MTV.  It was the Who's last top 20 single, reaching number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Townshend developed the song during a period of clubbing with the daughter of a friend.  The video was a black and white studio session.  Don't Let Go the CoatThis deeper cut was the second single, and was inspired by Townshend's guru Meher Baba and his statement that his followers “hang fast to the hem of my robe,” meaning to stay true to his teachings.  It also may have been inspired by Townshend's parents who would pick him up after his binges on drugs and alcohol. The Quiet OneBassist John Entwistle takes an unusual turn as lead singer on this self-referential deep cut.  It was the B-side of the single “You Better You Bet.”  Entwisle said it was a song trying to explain that he wasn't really quiet, but that he started being quiet and got stuck in the pigeon hole of that label.Another Tricky Day“This is no social crisis, just another tricky day for you...fella!”   John Bundrick inspired this song, and it claims that what we're going through is nothing unique, but is just another tricky day.  The song is the final track on the album, and the video is in the same style as the first single - a black and white studio session. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Dynasty” John Forsythe, Linda Evans, and Joan Collins starred in this prime time soap opera. STAFF PICKS:Skateaway by Dire Straits Bruce brings us a song about a girl who skates around the city, ticking off the drivers, weaving in and out of traffic, and listening to the local rock and roll station on her headphones.  This is the lead single from the Dire Straits album Making Movies,  and the album title is pulled from the lyrics of this song.Precious to Me  by Phil SeymourDrummer, singer-songwriter, and guitarist Phil Seymour wrote this song with a throwback doo-wop feel.  This is the first single from his first solo album.  It hit number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Seymour also contributed backing vocals to Tom Petty's “American Girl” and “Breakdown.”He Can't Love You by the Michael Staley Band Wayne features a one hit wonder featuring saxophonist and E. Street Band member Clarence Clemons.  It made it to number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the 40th song played on MTV.  The Michael Stanley Band is big regionally in Ohio.I Love a Rainy Night by Eddie RabbitBrian's staff pick is a crossover country hit.  It hit the top of both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Country charts.  It describes the feeling that comes from a good rain at night.  Rabbit started writing the song in the 60's, but didn't develop it until this album.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Toccata by SkyThis prog rock group covers the classical piece "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" by J.S. Bach made it on the British singles charts.

Old Movies For Young Stoners

In our terrific tenth episode, we delve into the hallucinogenic possibilities of the most surreal movie genre of them all -- the musical! And as strange as the musical is, it was the most normie form of entertainment for a good chunk of the 20th Century, and is still capable of giving us the utter batshit weirdness of CATS from time to time. For our first film, we go back to the height of MGM and the technicolor musical for ON THE TOWN from 1949 where Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin are a trio of horny sailors looking for love and destroying brontosaurus fossils while on 24-hour leave in New York City. Along the way, they meet Ann Miller as a beautiful woman scientist who's smitten with Munshin because he looks like a neanderthal; Betty Garrett as an aggressively amorous cabbie with a hankering for Frank; and Very-Ellen as "Miss Turnstiles," the object of Kelly's affections and the subject of the movie's dreamlike dance sequences. With satire that still lands and groundbreaking location cinematography, this one was a big hit with young stoners Cory & Philena. In our second feature, British director Ken Russell and Roger Daltry of The Who, fresh off their success in TOMMY, get even weirder with the rock opera for LISZTOMANIA (1975), an anachronism-heavy take on the life of Hungarian composer (1811-1886), a long-haired heartthrob who sent young women into fits of hysteria. Russell's obsessions with sex, paganism and Third Reich iconography are all on display here as this movie is chock full o' towering dicks, bare breasts and Nazi vampires. Plus we have the lead singer of The Who being enveloped by a mammoth vagina, Ringo Starr as the Pope, AND Nell Campbell from Rocky Horror Picture Show completing her mission to be in the weirdest musicals of 1975. And Rick Wakeman converted the music of Liszt into its prog rock synth score and plays Thor in a way you'll never see the thunder god portrayed in the MCU. Weed recs are definitely essential for this one. Both movies are currently streaming on HBOMax. I just checked and they're still there but watch 'em while you can before HBO is nothing but Ghost Adventures spinoffs. Sorry for some of the audio hiccups here. Loren Gold Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Sitting down with Loren Gold, keyboardist for The Who, and Chicago, both, currently (WHAT!), not to mention a close treasured friend, was win, win, win. Such easy fun. In the coming days, Loren will be out with both bands. Talk about a bounty of riches. Deserved. We talked about how this craziness came to be, from auditioning for Roger Daltry in 2009, and then, after 3 years of touring with him, being invited to join The Who. Great stories here. Seeing Loren with them at The Hollywood Bowl at the end of 2019, was arguably the best, or at the very least, one of the greatest concerts I've ever been lucky enough to see made better still because of Loren. COVID wreaked havoc with both those gigs, only to find it created an opening with Chicago. That whole journey was great to hear. From 6 yr old Loren, forced to take piano lessons, to 15 yr old Loren, knowing that was all he wanted to do, high school bands and day jobs to touring with Tiffany, Hilary Duff at the height of her fame, becoming her musical director, then in kind for Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, and Taylor Hicks, opening for Kelly Clarkson, and The Doobie Brothers to name but two. All roads leading… to The Who. Who knew! A pop culture junkie, he still thrills meeting his musical and television heroes and seems to become best friends with all of them. Only knowing Loren for 3 1/2 years, it's easy to see why. I already count him as one of my nearest and dearest. Insanely talented, he treated us to a couple of musical interludes, great stories, and to his fab company. I love Loren, and by the outpouring of messages from his fans and fan clubs (plural), I'm not alone. If you're a Loren, Chicago, or Who fan, and who isn't, check your local listings, he'll be here, there, and everywhere. I wait with bated breath for his return with The Who, to the Bowl on November 1st. Hope I'll see some of you there. CNN, ABC, BET, FOXMusic & Munchies is My Show Theme This Week: Soul Snacks Cookie Company!Everyone wants to be a leader in a world where people don't often possess the experience or expertise to be in the lead. SOUL SNACKS was never done alone and cannot be.”All Rights Reserved © 2022 BuildingAbundantSuccess!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Radio @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBAS

"I hope I die before I get old" zong Roger Daltry op Woodstock. Hailing out of Canvey Island the band are widely acknowledged as the best band on London's pub rock scene in the mid 70's which heavily influenced the birth of punk rock. The band were riding high after their live album Stupidity topped the UK charts in 1976 but Wilko left the Feelgood's after a spectacular bust up with frontman Lee Brilleaux whilst recording the band's fourth album Sneaking Suspicion the following year. Wilko was later invited to join the Blockheads by Ian Dury and recorded the Laughter album with the band. During his time with the Blockheads Wilko formed a friendship with bass player Norman Watt-Roy who still plays in his 3 piece band today together with drummer Dylan Howe. There was a resurge in interest in the Feelgood's in 2009 when Julien Temple released his excellent documentary film, Oil City Confidential. On the back of the film Wilko landed his first acting role with a part in Game of Thorns as House Lancaster executioner See Ilyn Payne. In 2013 Wilko was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given less than a year to live. He refused chemopathy and crammed into what he thought was his last year; trips to Japan, a farewell tour, recording a best selling album with Roger Daltry and making another film The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson with Julien Temple about his own mortality. However, a fan who happened to be a cancer specialist perseuded Wilko to take a second opinion and Wilko underwent a major operation which cured him from cancer. In 2016 Wilko published his autobiography Don't You Leave Me Here and in 2018 he released Blow Your MInd, an album of new material. Wilko was still gigging until Covid stuck.

On this special episode of The Projection Booth we're looking at Ken Russell's Tommy. Released in 1975 this is an interpretation of The Who's Rock Opera of the same name which stars Roger Daltry as the titular Tommy. After witnessing a scene of his mother and her lover killing his father, Tommy is rendered psychosomatically blind, deaf, and mute. He becomes a wiz at pinball, starts a religion, and is eventually brought low as a false prophet.Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
