The American economy revolves around credit. We use credit cards for everyday purchases like gas and groceries, but we also take out major loans to pay for school, homes and automobiles. But what if we lived in a world without credit? How would this affect our financial system and our daily lives? Would it reshape human history? On the last episode of this season of Downside Up, Chris Cillizza considers these questions with sociologists Sarah Quinn and Monica Prasad, and New York Times business reporter Emily Flitter. Greg Bach co-hosts. American adults are in a friendship recession but, why? Madison's vibrant Night Market. Wisconsin's historic love of beer and the UW nurse strike is coming. Hour 1 TBD if America is in an economic recession but turns out we are in a friendship recession. Especially men.  One small thing you can do to change that? Check in on an old friend.  Tiffany Kenney talks to us about the return of the Madison Night Market September 8th starting at 4pm on State Street. Hour 2 Who does the American Flag belong to these days? It's National Beer Lovers Day - a deep seated tradition in Wisconsin.  So deep that Old World Wisconsin debuted an entire Brewing Experience in 2022. Rob Novak joined to talk about what it's like to brew beer like is 1899.  They have plenty of events you can attend this fall and kids get in free in September (but you still have to be 21 to drink the beer). Hour 3 Evers announced an unlikely education budget wishlist and we ask "What's really news in Wisconsin when you have a divided government?" We never claimed to be a pop culture show, but we can't even escape the 'Don't Worry Darling' drama. UW Health nurses, Will Kiesling and Sarah Quinn, join to talk the pending nurses strike. Sarah began her career as a Direct Marketing superstar, going on to become a proven high-impact turnaround sales strategist in the B2B and B2C enterprise space, helping increase both her employer's and client's bottom line.Key Quotes:“It's not what people like that's the most important. It's what they don't like that might be the most important…When people love you, they love you. Like political parties, if I'm a Democrat or Republican, I'm going to vote one way or the other. It's easy to find people firmly on this side or that side, but it's not easy to find people that might go on either side. That's also a part of a marketer's struggle. To understand what they don't like, to me, is as important as what they do.”“When I say the comment, ‘The customer's always right,' we know they're not always right. But, it's how do you make them feel like you hear them and you understand, and how do you sway them to maybe understand they're not right?”“If the last two years didn't prove to marketers that you just can't depend on the environment or history or anything, then I don't know what will. Those that come to the top will come to the top, and the two words I keep saying are agility and flexibility.”Time Stamps:*[1:15] Sarah's role at TELUS International*[3:50] Biggest changes in CX from the past decades *[6:33] Tools for getting to know your customer better*[14:57] Outdated CX techniques *[16:438] Times regression-modeling worked wonders*[20:57] What's next for TELUS International *[21:49] The future of CX trends*[26:50] Engaging across generations with the same message*[35:40]  Advice to staying agile and flexible during cultural change LinksConnect with Sarah on LinkedInConnect with Phil on LinkedInFollow Phil on TwitterThanks to our friendsThis episode is brought to you by IBM. When I was a kid, riding my bicycle up and down my block was one of my favorite things to do. We had a little creek at the end of the street that served as a gathering spot for all of the neighborhood kids… I guess it was a little like gathering around the water cooler that adults do in the workplace. From our bikes, we'd swap stories, make up games, and just be kids. I haven't really thought much about biking as an adult. It's just not part of my life nowadays.  However, that's not true for this week's guest. Sarah Quinn is Membership & Outreach Manager at BikePGH, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to making Pittsburgh's streets safer for bicyclists and pedestrians. As someone who didn't own a car until she was 25, Sarah understands the need for equitable transportation options. Giving us insight into her book, Quinn shows that since the Westward expansion, the U.S. government has used financial markets to manage America's complex social divides, and politicians and officials across the political spectrum have turned to land sales, homeownership, and credit to provide economic opportunity without the appearance of market intervention or direct wealth redistribution.  Check out the links below for more info on Sarah Quinn and a link to her book!  https://soc.washington.edu/people/sarah-quinn https://www.amazon.com/American-Bonds-International-Comparative-Perspectives/dp/0691156751 Want to contact the show? We tend to think of the market and government as separate spheres, related to one another, perhaps regulating one another, but rarely do we track the long-term ways in which both have created and shaped one another. Sarah Quinn, in her new book, 'American Bonds: How Credit Markets Shaped a Nation' tells a different story - one that positions the government's construction of credit markets in order to achieve policy ends - especially in housing - produced entire fields of finance in the market, while making government unaccountable and invisible within these processes and policies we tend to associate with the private, rather than public sector. This week, on The Civic Sociologist podcast, we talk with Dr Quinn about her fascinating and revealing retelling of the American story.

"After all of that glory, all of that triumph, it was a short walk back to my room. Hundreds of parents and professors and coaches and students were still milling about as I stepped in and closed the door. I had already packed up most of my things. The walls were bare concrete blocks again. My bed was stripped. My desk was cleaned off and my duffel was full. I suddenly felt incredibly sad. I sat down on the edge of the bed and took a big deep breath. I didn’t want to leave. What the heck am I going to do now? I thought. For all of my big dreams, big goals, big hopes, I hadn’t spent any time thinking about what I was going to do once I graduated. I guess some part of me, right up until that moment when I stood up and cheered and threw my hat in the air, maybe some part of me didn’t fully believe that it was ever going to happen. I prayed for it to happen. I convinced myself that I knew it would happen. I willed it to happen. But now that it had, I sat there dumbstruck. I felt so happy, so fulfilled, so overwhelmed, so proud – and so lost. What am I gonna do now?" -Rudy Ruettiger, Rudy: My Story When I graduated college and my track and field career ended, I had no idea who I was and what I was going to do for the rest of my life. Did I peak at 22? Would I have to get a real job? That felt like giving up on everything I’d ever dreamed of…it felt like I was accepting the fate of disappearing into the world, being someone who would always be less than. I thought my one true calling in life was to go to the Olympics in the triple jump. That one thing I dreamed about every night, set goals for, focused on, never lost sight of. When reality set in, I was nowhere near that caliber of athlete. The furthest I’d ever jumped was five feet short of Olympic qualification.  I believed, though, that like Rudy, I could will this dream to come true. But, as my graduation from Oglethorpe University loomed closer and with real life fast approaching, I had to come to grips with the end of my organized athletic career and prepare to enter the corporate world. Going on job interview after job interview after I graduated, I was both unexcited about the prospect of getting a real job and simultaneously overlooked by every employer I sat in front of. I believed that I would be set apart from other applicants simply because of my athletic background, but I wasn’t. Oglethorpe provided me with all the tools I needed to succeed post-grad, but I lacked any experience off the track and out of the classroom, because I chose to solely be a student-athlete. I didn’t have the necessary internships or jobs that would qualify me for the next phase of my life. These rejections had me feeling ill-equipped to even set foot on the path I was apparently supposed to be on next. The truth of the matter was, I didn’t even want the jobs I was applying for. The only thing I ever wanted to be was an athlete. I felt valueless, lost, and completely ashamed, believing that what I had to offer the world died with the competitor I once was when I jumped my final triple jump. I set on a long, painful, tear-filled, journey toward rediscovering myself, and it lead me to the world of entrepreneurship, the world of podcasting, and into the calling I realized I was meant to fulfill all along: to relentlessly keep moving forward through my life by helping those individuals stuck in the same rut I was in along the way. To do this, I created the Keep Moving Forward podcast, where I have the remarkable opportunity to interview current and former collegiate and professional athletes who successfully made the transition out of the sporting world and into the real world. Their paths there are riddled with obstacles, filled with tears and pain, but most importantly, their stories are marked with the undeniable truth that every single thing they learned as an athlete helped make them who they are today as a person and sustained them through whatever career path they’ve found themselves on. From Mario Andretti to Sarah Quinn, the moral of the story holds true: your identity is not rooted in the athlete you are, but everything you’ve learned has helped shape you into the capable, driven, goal-oriented, passionate, valuable individual that you’ve become. Which brings me to you, Mr. Johnson. At the release of episode 80, I made the public declaration on social media that I wanted to interview you for episode 100 of my podcast, to be released on Wednesday March 14, 2018. Every single day since then, I have tagged you, commented on your posts, tried to gain your attention in any way possible. Since I began this pursuit, the incredible community that surrounds me has taken it upon themselves to help me. From my closest friends and family, to loyal followers of my podcast whom I’ve never met, these wonderful people have taken to social media and tried to reach you, simply because they want to see me succeed. When it feels like one dream is shattered, one you believed you were always meant to achieve, if you learn to change your perspective and see the other doors opening up around you, you will find yourself on the path you were actually meant to walk. And your own journey through athletics, Mr. Johnson, is a testament to that fact. You’ve said that your apparent failure to make it into the NFL was in fact the greatest thing to never happen to you. I feel the same about what was (at the time) the biggest let down of my life in recognizing my own athletic shortcomings when I graduated from college. What I desperately want, what I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I was called into this world to do, is to help those student athletes just like me. Those who are about to graduate college, those whose worlds feel like they’ve come crashing down because they didn’t achieve the biggest goal of their lives. I am here to share the stories of individuals who can help the people struggling to transition into whatever life has in store for them next, going confidently forward knowing that everything they learned as an athlete will sustain them into whatever it is they choose to do next. I am asking for 1-hour of your time to share the part of your story where you discovered how to use your athlete mentality to manufacture yourself into the unbeatable entrepreneur you are today. I sometimes still can’t believe the people I’ve had the opportunity to speak with because of the Keep Moving Forward platform…people whom I’ve looked up to my entire life. From Rudy Ruettiger to Evander Holyfield, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever be able to have conversations with these incredible human beings. But I have. So, the way I see it, I have a chance to get this interview with you if I work hard enough for it. At least, that’s something I’ve learned from watching you grow in your own career since I was young…because, as I preach to anyone who might take the time to listen in, giving up is for rookies. And even if episode 100 doesn’t work out, I will find a reason to keep going, to keep pursuing you, until you finally relent and allow me to help share your story. Mr. Johnson, to say it would be an honor to speak with you is an understatement in the highest form, because it would be a dream come true not only for me, but for the community I am blessed to be supported by. Thank God He crushes some dreams, because that means those dreams are too small…and this truth lead me here. When you are ready to share your journey with my listeners, I am ready to hep tell it. Just say when and, together, we can show the world how to keep moving forward.   Sincerely, Katy Galli www.keepmovingforward.us Instagram: @keepmovingforwardpodcast Facebook: @KeepMovingForward Twitter: @KMFpodcast

In the 92nd episode of Keep Moving Forward, I interview MIT All-American Cross Country Runner, Musician, and Entrepreneur, Sarah Quinn   “Work ethic is something everybody can give.” Talent is beyond your control. Work ethic, though? That’ entirely on you. You simply have to decide how badly you want it...and if it means enough to you, you will do whatever it takes to reach your goals. Sarah Quinn is living proof of this fact.   A breakout high school cross country star turned NCAA Academic All-American at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sarah Quinn was an unstoppable force. But when faced with an unexpected bout of anxiety and depression that running could not fix, she rediscovered a new piece of herself in music. Through a trying journey strewn with obstacle after obstacle, Sarah refused to give up. She always figured out a way to keep moving forward, and with the support of her family and the unbreakable mental fortitude that shaped her as an athlete and a student, Sarah would not be beaten. Today, she continues to press on in her life in huge ways as a musician and entrepreneur.   I had the privilege of going to high school with the Mighty Quinn and to say I am honored that she chose to share her story with me is an understatement. I hope you are inspired and moved by the story of the unbreakable Sarah Quinn.   If you want to learn more about Sarah and stay up to date and everything she is doing, you can follow her on Facebook and Instagram at the links in my show notes. For her latest music, follow her on SoundCloud and Spotify.   We are in week 12 of trying to get The Rock, so if you want him to be a guest on KMF as badly as I do, then let’s get to work. Just start tagging him on social media and telling him that he has to be a guest; tell him how much you want to hear his story.   If you guys enjoy Keep Moving Forward and want to tell me so, I would love for you to leave me a review on iTunes. And if you really like my show and would like for me to give you a shout out at the beginning of my next episode, you can donate as little as $1 to my podcast and become a loyal patron at Patreon.   Always remember, you can beat the odds and go the distance, if only you keep moving forward.

Susan Daffron talks to Sarah Quinn of the Humane Society of Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League about a dog she is fostering named Lucy. A 6 year old merle female Great Dane with natural (not cropped) ears, Lucy is a friendly girl who takes about 10-15 minutes to warm up to you and after that she's "Velcro dog." Lucy has been in foster care for a while and has made great progress. She is playful and loves her daily walks, but would do best in a home that has no small kids, dogs, or cats. She is fine with larger dogs and seems to particularly like women. As far as training, she had learned sit, stay, and lay down. Her foster mom says Lucy is quite the "cuddle bug" and thrives on attention from humans.
