Where am I going in life? This tends to captivate the modern mind. Qohelet, the author of Ecclesiastes, says that is our very source of pain. Workism is making us miserable, oppression is widespread, and people are lonely. Even wisdom fails in securing fame. In this chapter (4), we're offered a new question to ask. For our hearts to be indexed away from me, and to focus on we.
In today's episode, we're joined by Simone Stolzoff, author of “The Good Enough Job”. Simone brings incredible insight into redefining our relationship with work and finding balance in a culture obsessed with productivity. Workism: Where did America's obsession with work come from? Why it's crucial to rethink tying our purpose, identity, and worth to our work. The truth about “do what you love” – is it all it's cracked up to be? How diversifying our identity and sense of worth can transform our lives. Finding meaning and identity beyond “what you do.” Redefining success for true happiness. + SO MUCH MORE! About Simone: Simone Stolzoff is an author, journalist, and workplace expert from San Francisco. A former design lead at the global innovation firm IDEO, his work has been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, and various other publications. His debut book The Good Enough Job: Reclaiming Life from Work was the #1 bestselling work-life balance book of 2023 and has been translated into over a dozen languages. Welcome back to the summer re-run series! I'm pulling out some of my older episodes that I still get the most positive feedback on. And they happen to be related to slaying ideas that keep us miserable. Sometimes we have to pop the bubbles of ideas that we are supposed to agree with or keep up with so that we can make businesses (and lives) for ourselves that are supportive and satisfying. So- especially if you feel a little lost, hopeless, or like you are on the road to, or already deep into, a burnout stage listen in to Workism, Frankenstein and the Passion Principle. Be prepared to let go of cherished ideas that circulate in the self-employed worlds. simpleprospering.com/hapi

Working really hard and being super invested in reaching your goals is NOT the path to your dream career. That's just some bad Kool Aid you've been drinking. This ethos, also known as Workism, is a fast track to burnout. If you really want to feel fulfilled, try these tips to add more joy to your life and watch your career (finally) take off with your quality of life intact. Eliminate tasks that don;t have a high ROI for your time investment. Remember that self care is also a high ROI investment. Care less. Leave your ego and its hyper-vigilance for anything that might threaten you behind. Assume positive intent and get more positive responses back. Reframe situations to see lessons learned or clarity gained instead of focusing on what you might lose. Stop defending your perspective and let everyone be right. Arguing wastes energy that could be spent on creative pursuits. Ask yourself what the most fun thing you could do- and give yourself permission to do it. This resources you and helps you maintain healthy boundaries. What up, Beasts? Welcome back to the show. Today I'm hanging out with Andee Scarantino. This woman is a BEAST!! She genuinely gives a shit about helping humans resist standardization, reprogram from Workism ethos, and eliminate compulsive behavior and overthinking. She created Get the F*ck Off because when she was making her own transformation, she was insanely put off by inspirational content that seemed completely and utterly inauthentic. She's a multi-passionate, swearing, highly spiritual (non-religious) life coach, and she helps her clients transform their lives, behaviors, bodies, and circumstances by coaching their unconscious minds, and teaching them present moment awareness. Andee earned her M.A. in Sociology from Columbia University in 2013. Her work incorporates how macro-level systems contribute to individual arrested development. Since a very young age, she has always had a fascination for knowing and understanding people. She spent 20 years working in the food, beverage, and hospitality industry; 11 of those years were at a restaurant in Times Square. Through that time, both while bartending and training staff members, she honed the incredible skill of active listening. Now, Andee uses her powerful voice to connect to the “greater story of us,” showing readers and listeners alike how so much of our human experience is dictated to us by things outside of our awareness. Andee is the creator and leader of a women's coaching community, “The Day 1. Experience” The community is based on the concept that everything happens now. One of her members described it as a “beautifully powerful container full of trust, vulnerability, laughs, a few cuss words, and a whole lot of exploration.” Day 1. is a reminder that every day, every moment, is an opportunity for a fresh start. Who you are today is not contingent on yesterday. A former 18-year cigarette smoker, Andee now is an avid runner and has run many full marathons since 2018. Quitting smoking was the fulcrum that shifted her understanding of how perceived identity contributes to people staying in what they believe are unmovable scenarios. Andee lives in New York City. In her free time, she enjoys running by the East River. As always, I hope something lands with you today. I hope something you hear tugs on your heart strings and/or, I hope you laugh. Workism has been named the religion of millennials. Young adults in our country work more than ever before, taking fewer vacations than ever before. Our temptation is to find our purpose in our work. But as followers of Jesus, our purpose is not something to be found, it is assigned.
Today is part 2 of 4 in my series on the core values, or compass points, that Simple Prospering orients as its True North, and values that I think can be mighty helpful for all businesses. I talked about value 1, make progress, in the last two week's episodes. Today we are talking about value #2: how to keep it simple! Simple is in the name of my business, so obviously it's important to me, but “keep it simple” is often thrown around like trite advice and it's easier said than done when you are in business for yourself. In this episode I focus on 2 common barriers I see to effective simplicity in one's work. Really I am sacrificing 2 sacred cows in this week's episode: Barrier number one/aka Sacred Cow number one (especially in service-based businesses): Workism and The Passion Principle. Barrier number two/aka Sacred Cow number two (for nearly all entrepreneurs) Frankensteining your offerings until you've created, you guessed it. a monster. Come? Anzi le cose stanno esattamente all'opposto.

Do you live to work or work to live? In Spain they live to live, work is just an aside. On this episode, we dive into work culture in Spain and try to make sense of its aspects that are starkly different from the US. For example, is it normal for work colleagues to follow you on Instagram? And is being late to work really acceptable? Tune in to hear what we've discovered! Also, why Spaniards may sometimes come across as blunt. In this episode, Tesa references a Pew Research Report that is discussed in the following article: "Workism is Making Americans Miserable" by Derek Thompson

Has "workism" and obsession with achievement replaced religion? In a new book, Justine Toh challenges the market-driven idea of meritocracy, saying it has created a culture of smugness for the successful and a politics of humiliation for those left behind.

If you only had _________ life would be so much better, right? In a culture flooded with newer, better versions of everything we already have, we've all fallen victim to the desire for "just a little more." Today we continue our message series, Smoke & Mirrors: Deciphering Truth in a World of "truths," by looking to the book of Ecclesiastes, where we'll explore what it looks like to have it all, but realize it still isn't enough. Listen with us in today's message, Fallen Demand: Materialism, to enjoy the generosity of the God who shares His prize with His children!

Have you ever answered the question of "How are you doing?" as, "Good, but I've been really busy." Or have you ever had the feeling of being "burnout?" Austin and Tyler take on some good questions about the modern nature of work, the workplace, and our approach to our vocation. Join us as we look to re-enchant the culture, one where the norm is to find ourselves unhealthfully attached to the products of our work and seemingly unable to find a way to distinguish our work from our life outside of our work. The inspiration for this episode comes from a recent sermon at Bridge Town Church titled A Community of Contribution in a Culture of Careerism. To help critique the current state of affairs we also reference a great article from Church Life Journal at Notre Dame: A Catholic Response to Workism. Lastly, we seek inspiration from the words of the monastic mystic, Thomas Merton. His musings reorient our minds and hearts around how we should approach work with pure and simple attention. Whether you are a mechanic, an accountant, or a gardener, we hope you find this conversation thought provoking and life giving. “We must be content to live without watching ourselves live, to work without expecting an immediate reward, to love without an instantaneous satisfaction, and to exist without any special recognition” (121). - Thomas Merton (No Man is an Island)

Workism is the twisted notion that your value is tied to employment and that work can serve as the primary (if not sole) source of meaning in your life. If that idea sounds outlandish to you, well, it is. But it's a very real phenomenon and it is having devastating consequences on people's mental health and well-being. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/stophatingmondays/message

For this week's episode, we decided to social distance from our guests and talk to some numbers instead. As much as we've loved talking to real people working jobs they really love, and as excited as we are about having even more of those conversations, we wanted to take a step back to frame the "thesis" for this podcast in light of the available data. This podcast started with a simple idea: meaningful work is a necessary component of a meaningful life. But is that really true? Is it just something Millennials say to justify their pathological inability to stay in a job for longer than 24 months? Are there other macro trends at play that make it challenging (but no less essential) to structure our work in a way that provides purpose beyond a paycheck? This episode attempts to answer those questions while also unpacking the uniquely-Millennial hangups and neuroses that make meaningful work especially challenging in 2020. Like most of these early episodes, this conversation was recorded months ago and, therefore, has no knowledge of the impending COVID calamity. (Ah, December...such a simpler time.) But it doesn't make the data any less relevant or any less true. Give it a listen! And let us know what you think. Articles and data points referenced in the episode: Workism is Making Americans Miserable (The Atlantic)How Millennials Became The Burnout Generation (Buzzfeed)Life purpose is significantly correlated with all-cause mortalityEmbracing community leads to longer, happier lives (HBR)Millennials value paychecks over purpose (Gallup)The Enormous Cost of Unhappy Employees (Inc.)Millennials and loneliness (Vox)Millennials are poorer than previous generations (Financial Times)95% of teens say having a job they love is extremely or very important to them (Pew)Why are young people pretending to love work? "Sleep, Part 1 - Why Aren't We Sleeping?" Americans aren’t sleeping as much as we used to. In fact, we now sleep an average of 1.5 – 2 hours less per night than we did in the 1960s. And this is not a good thing! Sleep is essential to living a healthy, balanced, and God-glorifying life, and we are arrogant to neglect proper sleep. In this episode, Josh and Betsy dig into the reasons that we modern Americans aren’t sleeping, and why it matters more than we think. You spend a third of your life asleep, why not spend a little time with Josh and Betsy exploring this vital topic? The big work question used to be "Do you live to work, or work to live?" Now, it's "Can you ever work hard enough?" In February 2019, Atlantic staff writer Derek Thompson wrote a viral article about workism - that "work has morphed into a religious identity—promising transcendence and community, but failing to deliver." How widespread and cult-like has this become? Helen speaks to a workplace wellness expert, those trying to define success, and a 'workism reformist', to find out.
