fWotD Episode 2743: Starship Troopers (film) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 7 November 2024 is Starship Troopers (film).Starship Troopers is a 1997 American science fiction action film directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Edward Neumeier, based on the 1959 novel by Robert A. Heinlein. Set in the 23rd century, the story follows teenager Johnny Rico and his comrades as they serve in the military of the United Citizen Federation, an Earth-based world government engaged in an interstellar war against an alien species known as the Arachnids. The film stars Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Muldoon, and Michael Ironside.Development of Starship Troopers began in 1991 as Bug Hunt at Outpost 7, written by Neumeier. After recognizing similarities between Neumeier's script and Heinlein's book, producer Jon Davison suggested aligning the script more closely with the novel to garner greater interest from studio executives. Despite these efforts development was slow, with studios hesitant to fund the costly project right up to the start of filming. Principal photography took place between April and October 1996 on a $100–110 million budget, of which nearly half was spent on the extensive computer-generated imagery (CGI) and practical effects required to vivify the Arachnid creatures.Released on November 7, 1997, Starship Troopers faced critical backlash, with reviewers interpreting the film as endorsing fascism and disparaging its violence and cast performances. Despite initial box office success, collections slowed down amid negative reviews and unfavorable word of mouth, culminating in a $121 million total gross against its budget, which made it the 34th-highest-grossing film of 1997. The disappointing performance of Starship Troopers was blamed, in part, on competition from a high number of successful or anticipated science fiction and genre films released that year, its satire and violence failing to connect with mainstream audiences, and ineffective marketing.Since its release, Starship Troopers has been critically re-evaluated and is now considered a cult classic and a prescient satire of fascism and authoritarian governance that has grown in relevancy. The film launched a multimedia franchise that includes four sequels—Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004), Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008), Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012), and Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars (2017)—as well as a 1999 animated television series, video games, comics, and a variety of merchandise. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 15:06 UTC on Friday, 8 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Starship Troopers (film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

Entering Greta Base proper, the specialists sent by ARIES Corporation find a deathly silent research station. The first common room they inspect is a horror show, covered in debris, blood, and spent bullet casings. Yet most concerning to the team is the makeshift barracade across the hallway, restricting movement deeper into the base. At least is is the most concerning issue until strange noises begin echoing from down the hall... We continue Another Bug Hunt, a Mothership adventure. After radio silence for several months, ARIES, the Corporation responsible for the Samsa VI mission, dispatches a crew to find out what happened to the team of scientists, researchers, and company marines they sent to investigate the planet for biological and pharmacological opportunities. Starship Troopers (1997)- based on the book by Robert Heinlen from 1959, follows Juan Johnny Rico in a futuristic fascistic society on Earth as they go to war with the Pseudo-Arachnids aka bugs. Notable for being the first work of science fiction to use “power armors” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarshipTroopers(film)?wprov=sfti1 The film, directed by Paul Verhooven (Robocop) acts as a propaganda piece following the rise of a soldier and his roughnecks. We are keeping this flying saucer spinning until the damn tractor beam falls off here for 2001: A Space Augusty. All month we are doing alien content and we hope you think it's... out of this world. ...don't worry, the jokes on the episode are better than that. This week, Producer C.H.A.D. swings by to talk about Paul Verhoeven's sometimes misinterpreted masterpiece, Starship Troopers. Verhoeven is obviously a master of satire, but it seems audiences mistook Johnny Rico as the American Jesus instead of a cautionary tale of the follies of fascism. Writer, Ed Neumeier, previously worked with Verhoeven on Robocop and this reunion is nothing short of gory, tongue in cheek bliss. We talk all about how Neumeier allegedly was working on an idea called, "Bug Hunt at Outpost 9," which was retconned to be an adaptation of Robert Anson Heinlein's 1959 novella. The film stars Casper Van Dien as the citizen hopeful, Johnny Rico. Van Dien uses the "Freddy Got Fingered" defense in explaining why the film was a financial flop. Find out why his reasoning is rather sound in the episode. Denise Richards plays Carmen Ibanez, who does not play any kind of guitar despite her namesake. Luckily, there is still a stringed instrument played by Jake Busey. That's right. It's the neon violin, which is tacky, terrible, and tantalizingly schlocky. Clancy Brown and Michael Ironside deliver what Jake contends are their top tier performances. Basil Poledouris does the music, and while not his most rousing score, it gets the job done. His daughter also gets a cameo. We talk about the sequels which vary wildly in quality from super bad to just kinda bad. Neumeier continued to direct, but even legendary effects maestro, Phil Tippett, helmed an installment. Did you ever watch Roughnecks? Because we briefly talk about that show too. Briefly. We spend a bit more grey matter and time on the Starship Troopers comic books, one of which was written by Transmetropolitan writer, Warren Ellis. It all started as a simple error message from a piece of software that had run seamlessly thousands of times over the past two years. And yet, once a week in late 2016, this error message would rear its ugly head. At first, it was thought to be a user error. But after some testing, it was clear that we were dealing with a software bug. Thus began a month-long hunt for this elusive bug, becoming as much a personal vendetta as a solution to an intractable problem.Software bugs are a fact of life; born out of the ever-increasing complexity of our world. Humans work hard at reducing their frequency and effect, but they can never be eliminated. In our case, what complicated matters was our inability to replicate the problem, which would have allowed us to reliably test and fix the issue. No matter how many times we tried, we simply could not reproduce this bug, and yet, it continued to haunt us week after week. The problematic code was only 8 lines long. After several weeks of chasing, these eight lines were re-written and simplified. This should have been the end of the hunt, but instead of using the re-written code, it was decided, perhaps foolishly, that the hunt must go on.Eventually, the whole company was pulled in to aid in the hunt. The source of the bug was eventually discovered, but at what cost?Listen to your bug-hunter host Hany Fahim explain how it all went down.Connect with Hany at his company stack.io and LinkedIn. Rob Zdybel, Atari (Part 2) Hello, Atari fans, and welcome to another interview episode of Antic, The Atari 8-bit Computer Podcast. My name is Randy Kindig. This interview is a bit different in that it’s the second interview with someone that we’ve interviewed before - Mr. Rob Zdybel. The reason for this is that Rob worked for Atari so long, and was involved in so many projects, that I felt like some information was left undiscovered in the first interview. At the request of some listeners, I decided to do a follow-up interview and Rob was kind enough to agree. Rob Zdybel was a very long-time employee at Atari, having worked there beginning in 1979 all the way to 1996, when the Tramiels left. Rob has a long line of credits including Pigs in Space, Real Sports Football, Stellar Track and Star Trek for the Atari 400/800, SOS for the Atari 2600, Missile Command for the Atari 5200, and Bug Hunt for the Atari XE. He also designed the system BIOS for the Atari 5200. Please note that this interview does have some profanity, although I did beep out the most obvious instances. This interview took place on July 10, 2016. Welcome to Still Growing's first double feature! Our first guest is Laura Eubanks from Design for Serenity. Laura's work on succulent plants has been featured all over the country and she is an absolute master on creating beautiful and creative succulent designs. I was blown away by Laura's succulent pumpkins when I first saw her work in the 2014 August edition of Country Gardens. Our second guest on this week's podcast is Benedict Vaheems of The Big Bug Hunt. He is also my first guest who is based out of the UK! The Big Bug Hunt is a citizen science project that reports pests in the area. It is also a fantastic app for gardeners who want to deter these bad bugs from reaching their garden in an organic way; as many organic control methods need to be place on the plant before the pests arrive. Author information Jennifer Ebeling Producer & Host at Still Growing... Gardening Podcast Jennifer Ebeling is a proud Minnesotan and U of MN alumni. Gooooooo Gophers! Each week, Jennifer produces and hosts Still Growing - a gardening podcast dedicated to helping you and your garden grow. The show is an in-depth interview format. Guests featured on the show share a passion for gardening and include authors, bloggers, professional gardeners, etc. Listeners and guests of the show can join the Still Growing community on Facebook. It's a place to ask questions, share garden stories, interact with great guests featured on the show, and continue to grow and learn. Jennifer and her husband Philip have four children, a big golden lab named Sonny, and live in lovely Maple Grove, Minnesota. P.S. When she's not teaching her four kids a new card game - or teaching them how to drive a car - Jennifer loves inspiring individuals and groups to maximize and personalize their home & garden. Rob Zdybel, Star Trek, Missile Command, Bug Hunt Rob Zdybel was a long-time employee at Atari, having worked there from 1979 to 1996, when the Tramiels left. He also designed the system BIOS for the Atari 5200. Rob mentions the SYLVIA game system in the interview, although he couldn’t remember the name of the system at the time. It was the machine that was supposed to come between the 2600 and the 5200 and which Doug Neubauer worked on. Niles Strohl and Doug Neubauer are both mentioned in the interview, both of which I’m working to get interviews. Please note that this interview does have some profanity. This interview took place on January 17, 2016. Teaser Quotes: “I said Good Lord, Man, I don’t know if I can stand the idea of using computers to kill people more accurately.” “They were going to give us a free Atari 800 computer. That’s one of things you got for signing on with the Atari crew.” “I signed on to the Atari 2600 program at the time. I was not actually interested in writing 2600 programs, but where my heart was really at was the Atari 800 computer because it was so much more powerful.” “The lights had come on: you CAN’T win at Marketing Adventure.” “You’re talking to the man who’s responsible for Chris Crawford being in the game industry. It’s my fault.” Links: list of Rob’s games at AtariMania PRGE 2013 - Bob Smith, Rob Zdybel, Joe Decuir - Portland Retro Gaming Expo - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmqzybUe9m4 “Once Upon Atari” - http://www.onceuponatari.com/
