The former CEO of the parent company that owns the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils has agreed to take the same position for London-based Merlin Entertainments. Scott O'Neil will be responsible for overseeing the business operations and global growth for Merlin Entertainments across its 147 attractions in 24 countries. O'Neil's appointment, effective Nov. 15, comes following outgoing CEO Nick Varney's decision to retire after 23 years. Merlin's attractions include 10 Legoland Resort Theme Parks and hotels, six Resort Theme Parks including Alton Towers, Heide Park and Gardaland, as well as Sea Life aquariums, Madame Tussauds, Peppa Pig World of Play, the Lastminute.com London Eye and Sydney Tower Eye. Merlin is continuing to expand, with three Legoland Resorts in China under development and further openings planned across the US and Asia. The 52-year-old O'Neil resigned in June 2021 from Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment after he helped lead scores of projects under the HBSE banner, such as the Grammy Museum at the Prudential Center and the creation of a state-of-the-art Sixers complex, both in New Jersey. O'Neil, a Villanova graduate, also previously led Madison Square Garden Sports. He oversaw the business operations of the Knicks, New York Rangers, and New York Liberty. “My experience in the NBA, NFL and NHL in building teams, my passion for guest experience, cultivating, reviving and building brands, and driving growth in a business that is similar and consumer focused seemed like a natural next step,” O'Neil said. Though it's far from a household name, Merlin has become the undisputed, second-largest visitor attractions operator on the planet based on attendance. Disney has a comfortable lead in the No. 1 spot. “Scott has significant experience in the entertainment industry, a proven track-record of delivering business transformation, and the vision and ambition to lead Merlin through the next exciting stages of its global development,” said Roland Hernandez, chair of Merlin Entertainments. “The board has every confidence in him, and we look forward to working closely together over the coming years.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Hugh Weber, President at Harris Blitzer Sports Entertainment, didn't envision himself someday running professional sports teams, but he did set out to have an impact. Hugh instead thinks of blunders as honing your craft and finding your authentic self. In the chat, he shares some failed moments from his early days running teams at a food industry startup. Hugh literally weathered the storm of Hurricane Katrina to help bring the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans) back stronger and more successful. He draws some parallels between how the organization had to adapt to that challenge to the pandemic we are all experiencing. After rebuilding the team and making it successful, Hugh was fired. Learn why being let go was a great experience and how it led him to HBSE. Hear some failures from handling the COVID crisis in a business where gathering people together is core to what they do.

With a roster consisting of multiple international players, the 76ers capped their three-day trip to England by facing the Boston Celtics in the NBA London Game 2018, the franchise's first-ever regular season game played outside of North America. On the night of the event, January 11th, Sixers.com's Brian Seltzer sat down with Sixers Co-Managing Partner David Blitzer, a former London resident. During their conversation, the two discussed the significance of the Sixers' visit overseas, the state of the organization, and the philosophies that guide how the Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment group runs its various properties.

Who owns your favorite sports team? There are still the Jerry Joneses and MarK Cubans of the world that drive their team with cult of personality, but more and more family owned teams are being replaced by corporate ownership for financial stability. The owners of the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils, and Crystal Palace of the English Premier League created a new organization called Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment (or HBSE)with the goal of acquiring and growing sports franchises and venues. Owning one franchise is difficult but owning several across different sports and in different countries all over the world presents it own set of problems and opportunities. I sat down and spoke with Scott O'Neil and Hugh Weber of HBSE to find out what it's like combining sports and business.

Apollo's Josh Harris and Blackstone's David Blitzer this week established Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, a holding company that'll guide their sports investments. The man in charge at HBSE is Chief Executive Officer Scott O'Neil, who talks about a host of topics, including cable television and new media, what presiding over ``Linsanity'' taught him and whether the Philadelphia 76ers strategy of stockpiling draft picks was a good one. O'Neil also discusses esports and his penchant for being first.  O'Neil oversees HBSE, which includes the 76ers, NHL's New Jersey Devils, the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, where the hockey team plays, English Premier League team Crystal Palace and an eSports team. He joined the 76ers as CEO in 2013, and was charged with rejuvenating the franchise's business operations.
