This Decision Inspired (and Challenged) Me! | Washington Commanders Hire Campbell's CEO Mark Clouse

the Joshua Schall Audio Experience

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 9, 2024 11:17

About a year ago, Campbell Soup Company CEO Mark Clouse made that statement during a keynote presentation to student leaders saying, "I like to seek out experiences that challenge me. I like to do things that make me a little uncomfortable and that put me in positions where I was learning…where I was trying something that I might not have been great at.” And he's right…as putting yourself in positions where you're a little uncomfortable (but where you can learn and develop as you move forward) is an essential part of what sets leaders apart. No matter what stage of your career, you must have that thirst to keep learning…looking for more inspiration, more knowledge, more mastery. And while some enhance their knowledge and skills through reading, listening to podcasts, or learning from mentors…Mark Clouse prefers a different more challenging method. Last week, Mark Clouse decided to leave The Campbell's Company (where he served as President and CEO since 2019) to become team President of the Washington Commanders. So, in essence…one day Mark Clouse is overseeing a $13 billion CPG brand portfolio, and the next he will be leading all facets of my lifelong favorite NFL team's business operations. Because even if Mark Clouse had an extremely impressive almost three-decade journey climbing the ranks of a highly competitive multitrillion-dollar industry…major U.S. pro sports organizations hiring a team president from the corporate world in general is a very rare occurrence. How does this even happen, right? It doesn't matter that Mark Clouse has no experience in professional sports…the team owner Josh Harris believes that being an accomplished business builder with a proven track record to strengthen both the organizations he leads and the communities he serves will translate successfully. But there is something that I believe is worth mentioning here…because while admiring (respecting) professional accomplishments (or personality traits) can happen from a distance in today's connected world, it's even more noticeable up close and personal. In that same keynote, Mark Clouse shared a story from early in his CPG career at Kraft Foods where he made a commitment to his future self…stating that he would be all in (showing up ready to play) regardless of what he was doing in life. And my assumption is that the leadership team at Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment saw Mark Clouse consistently show up in that “all-in” manner when they were negotiating a unique marketing partnership with The Campbell's Company that was announced about 1.5 months prior. This leadership pivot happened at the intersection of my passions for CPG and sports (aka the right place), but it also happened at maybe the right time. I wholeheartedly believe that the more you learn, the more you realize that there's still so much more to learn. And while I've continued to be passionately curious everyday…I've unintentionally put limitations to my learning. With the world changing rapidly today…I believe your ability to learn new things and adapt to new circumstances is more important than ever. So, while I'm not saying that I'll be professionally pivoting to such a degree like Mark Clouse (that is unless he needs a right-hand man) haha…his decision did inspire (and challenge) me to rediscover aspects of my lifelong learning quest that I know will provide me with an even greater fulfillment. The former CEO of the parent company that owns the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils has agreed to take the same position for London-based Merlin Entertainments. Scott O'Neil will be responsible for overseeing the business operations and global growth for Merlin Entertainments across its 147 attractions in 24 countries. O'Neil's appointment, effective Nov. 15, comes following outgoing CEO Nick Varney's decision to retire after 23 years. Merlin's attractions include 10 Legoland Resort Theme Parks and hotels, six Resort Theme Parks including Alton Towers, Heide Park and Gardaland, as well as Sea Life aquariums, Madame Tussauds, Peppa Pig World of Play, the Lastminute.com London Eye and Sydney Tower Eye. Merlin is continuing to expand, with three Legoland Resorts in China under development and further openings planned across the US and Asia. The 52-year-old O'Neil resigned in June 2021 from Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment after he helped lead scores of projects under the HBSE banner, such as the Grammy Museum at the Prudential Center and the creation of a state-of-the-art Sixers complex, both in New Jersey. O'Neil, a Villanova graduate, also previously led Madison Square Garden Sports. He oversaw the business operations of the Knicks, New York Rangers, and New York Liberty. “My experience in the NBA, NFL and NHL in building teams, my passion for guest experience, cultivating, reviving and building brands, and driving growth in a business that is similar and consumer focused seemed like a natural next step,” O'Neil said. Though it's far from a household name, Merlin has become the undisputed, second-largest visitor attractions operator on the planet based on attendance. Disney has a comfortable lead in the No. 1 spot. “Scott has significant experience in the entertainment industry, a proven track-record of delivering business transformation, and the vision and ambition to lead Merlin through the next exciting stages of its global development,” said Roland Hernandez, chair of Merlin Entertainments. “The board has every confidence in him, and we look forward to working closely together over the coming years.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

At the time, Scott was CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, but he stepped down over the last few weeks to recharge and spend time with his family.  This actually makes the fact that we spent more time talking about his book, Be Where Your Feet Are, that much more relevant.  We cover a lot of ground from teaching and leadership to the power of coaching kid's sports. We talk about the importance of relationships, being a mentor, and making mistakes.  I found this conversation personally powerful and I really enjoyed getting to talk with Scott because at the end of it, I felt you will know both of us better.  Get Scott's book. Scott O'Neil, CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, takes a break from celebrating the Philadelphia 76ers cruising into the 2nd round of the NBA Playoffs to discuss the release of a brand new book called, BE WHERE YOUR FEET ARE. The conversation wasn't about the 76ers success, but instead whether the team is learning as much this year at the top of the Eastern Conference as what the franchise learned when it only won 10 games in a single season. O'Neil explained that he primarily wrote the book to help create the next generation of leaders. He found that the Instagram life we live in that looks perfect is actually not so perfect. O'Neil wanted to share that it's okay and that life is messy; everything will be fine. He opened up and talked about how he has been fired from a high-profile job, ran a company into the ground, was flat broke, and getting foreclosure notices on his house in his life. When bad things happen, there's an incredible opportunity that presents itself. "I'm not ashamed of the failures or the falls or the slips because it's a part of who I am." It was great to hear how important being present is to Scott and why we all need to do a better job putting our phones down from time to time and keep our heads up. Scott also points out that is okay to ask for help and it is important for us to check in on people to make sure they are fine. He even drops a good line from Caddyshack. He also drops the gem that you should keep picking incredible people to work for and that you should not only dream but dream bigger. We finish with a quick chat on blockchain, crypto, and NFTs. Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp, VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkInSports.com and this is the Work In Sports podcast.  Over the last year, I, like many others, have spent time contemplating my own preconceived notions and unconscious biases in every walk of my life.   We all have them, it is a part of the human condition, but where do they come from, and why are they allowed to stay?  This question has perplexed me as I've tried to open up my lens and question myself every time an instinctive thought comes into my psyche.   While the social justice issues of 2020 may have sparked my internal curiosity, it would be naïve to think bias only comes into issues of race, gender and culture. When you pay attention to it, and the way your mind processes information, unconscious bias and preconceived determinations are everywhere.   I did some digging, and studies indicate that many children by five years of age have entrenched stereotypes about various social groups. The world we are exposed to forms our foundational beliefs and hen becomes a tool to make snap judgements and conclusions on sight.  Kind of spooky right? It's like our brain is hardwired by societal influence.   We watch Saturday morning cartoons and don't see any black or asian children, OK, white people hold more important statuses, got it.  We don't see women in positions of power, OK, men are more powerful, got it.  But it can even be simpler and more pervasive than race and gender, we see a hard charging, demanding CEO on TV and start to lump information together, OK, CEO's are smart, but mean and cutthroat, got it.  We see sales people represented in pop culture as in your face buy, buy, buy, and we think, OK, that's not me.   Our belief structures become formed, not out of some nefarious agenda, but because we as children are trying to make sense out of our world and the easiest way to do that is draw conclusions from what we see and hear.   As children we have no choice, we lack the cognitive ability to evaluate the validity of our assumptions.   As adults we do, if we pay attention to their existence.   I'll use a personal example. A couple of weeks back I had on Dr. Bill Sutton, one of the absolute best people in our industry. After our interview was complete we chatted a bit, and he suggested today's guest Scott O'Neil CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment as someone he could connect me with.   My instantaneous reaction was hell yes, but my subconscious notion was – he's the CEO of the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils, he's going to be tough, he's not going to have time to really do this, I'm going to get canned answers that aren't authentic, he's not going to be all that interested to talk to me, and this may very well sound better than it is in practice.  This is what ran through my head immediately!  Within a day the session was booked. Dr. Sutton came through. Scott and his team were kind, gracious, courteous and attentive. He sent me over a copy of his new book, Be Where Your Feet Are: Seven Principles to Keep You Present, Grounded, and Thriving...and I was blown away.   I really like meditation, being intentional, paying attention to your mind and the energy you throw off to others around you – but to learn Scott, this Harvard educated, top of class, wildly successful guy was contemplating true happiness alongside me?  I was blown away and read his book from beginning to end.   And there it is, preconceived notions, drawing unfair conclusions about people or evens before you KNOW a damn thing.   It's all I've been able to think about since I concluded the interview with Scott. In this episode of Follow Your Different, we continue our run of legendary authors with today’s guest, Scott O’ Neil. He is the author of a hot new book called Be Where Your Feet Are: Seven Principles to Keep You Present, Grounded, and Thriving. Scott O’Neil is the CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment. Which makes Scott the CEO of: The Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA The New Jersey Devils of the NHL The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey Dignitas, a pioneer in eSports A number of minor league teams A Venture Fund Real Estate developer / investor An Innovation Lab Today, we get to hear what it takes to manage not one, but two of North America’s elite professional sports teams, and how they have dealt with COVID and its effect on the category. We also dig in to Scott’s view on what sports role is in society, and how leaders should deal with social change and justice. Of course, we’ll have Scott pop the hood on how they turned the 76ers around and make them a winning team again. So if you love taking the long term in business and trying to figure out how business can make a difference as well as be successful, you're going to love everything about this episode.   The Role of Sports in Society Scott talks about his enthusiasm on work, and being able to do so in areas that could use the work generated by his businesses. Though at the end of the day, he says that he is more of a “run to work, run home” type of guy. He also shares his thoughts on the role of sports in a society. While there are some that argue that it shouldn’t have that much of an impact and influence, it is undeniable that it’s there. The question now is, how do you use that influence to make the world a bit better than before. “The argument is, sports shouldn't have this kind of influence and impact. And I say, great, it does. I actually have an opportunity to help people and drive change in communities and bring people together and create community. Coming off a pandemic, where we've had a year of being isolated, I don't think there's a better platform to build and deliver what we need more than anything else in the world right now, which is connection, and a bit of escapism, and community. And to do that where I get to do it every day is quite a blessing.” - Scott O’Neil   The New Roaring 20’s When asked about how some companies are already gearing up for the end of the pandemic, Scott thinks that we are on the verge of a new Roaring 20s, much like what happened in the 1900s. He is not far off the mark on this. Wall Street Journal has reported that companies today have more cash on hand than at any point in history, and the US consumer is wealthier now than at any point in US history. Which sounds so insane in the heels of this pandemic. As the desire of people to reconnect and the mental health strain of being isolated escalates, there will be a huge demand for the category that builds up community and togetherness in the future, as everything opens up again.   “So you can imagine to watch an NBA game and be the only fan which I was at the game. I had this incredible boost of mental health, which I think is going to be the next great challenge over the decade. I think all this isolation and separation and anxiety that that we are feeling is going to put quite a bit of strain on us as leaders, as dads and moms, and people in the community. As we've set out to define what that new normal is, I just felt the boost of of kind of happiness and energy and connection. I will say that I think these roaring 20s are going to be coming at us just like they were in the 1900s.” - Scott O’Neil   Being Role Models Scott then shares his insights on players and executives as role models for the future. While he thinks that our Frontliners make for better role models, players should not disparage themselves in this regard. Being in a sport that has a massive reach, whether you are an NBA player or an eSport star,

The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers

Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkInSports.com and this is the Work In Sports podcast...  For those of you who haven't listened to last week's podcast with Zach Maurides, go listen to it. Seriously, now. Stop listening and start there first.   Zach is the founder and CEO of Teamworks an athlete engagement platform that is currently working with over 100 professional sports teams and 200 full college athletic programs to be their student-athlete hub, managing their schedules, communication, itineraries, academics, nutrition and so much more.   They are growing massively, and Zach, as a former student-athlete, an offensive lineman at duke, is so incredibly informative.   Not convinced – I'll give you one nugget, one concept of many that Zach shares during this awesome podcast interview.  “I want to hire confident people. Confident people put in the work, and know they are going to win because they put in the work. Arrogant people just expect to win. We don't want arrogant people.”  Now picture this coming out of a 6'6” 290 lb. former offensive lineman, trust me when I say this --- you are going to feel fired up and ready to put in the work.   Ok, Wednesday – the godfather of sports business, seriously, I think you must kiss his ring before getting into the sports industry, Dr. Bill Sutton.   For those of you who don't know doc Sutton, he is the smartest most connected guy in the #sportsbiz I know. And more importantly, the most passionately supportive of his people. He has trained the best in the industry from GMs to sales directors, and he's not just an academic, he's worked for David Stern in the NBA and countless other organizations as part of his side hustle consulting business.   One quick story – he and I really hit it off, it's a great interview, and at the end, he said, "that was a lot of fun, I loved your questions and the way our conversation went, who else can I help you get to be a guest on your show?”   Figuring I could aim high since he is offering, I said: “Would you happen to know Scott O'Neil, CEO of the Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, the owners of the Sixers and Devils, I really like his style and would love to interview him?”   Within 30 minutes of the completion of our interview, Scott O'Neil emailed me to book a time.   Now that is legit power.   Sports Career Question from Amy in Boston: Let's get into today's question, which comes from Amy in Boston. Fun Fact, if I was a girl, I was going to be named Amy.   “Hey Brian, big fan of the podcast and your various articles, I feel like I've gone back through your archive so many times to answer my pressing career-focused questions. What I think is great is that your show isn't just about sports, it's about culture, and decision-maker and planning and strategy...I find it so informative.   Amy – you get me. Continue.   “My question is pretty simple: I got pretty good at the career fair circuit in late 2019, I had a good flow, made lots of contacts, felt like I was on the edge of getting hired... and then, you know, stuff. I've seen and heard a lot about virtual career fairs but am yet to attend one. Do you think they are worth it, and do you have any strategies surrounding them?”  Amy, I'll be honest, at first, my initial impression of virtual career fairs was that they felt like a pivot for companies that used to rely on in-person career fairs, and they just to keep themselves busy and active. That they weren't focused on the participant getting value, either as an employer or candidate.   But oh, how wrong I was.   See I can admit it, I have flawed theories sometimes. Neither Ivan Drago or I am machines. Yes, that was a Rocky IV reference which is about 20 years past its relevancy date...but I love it so.  Benefits of Virtual Career Fairs  The data is in, more people attend virtual career fairs than in-person career fairs,

Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkInSports.com and this is the Work in Sports podcast…First Super Bowl Monday in a long time that I'm not hungover, so thanks to that.  Quick take before we get into the stat line, and today's fan question. So far 42 emails, texts, and DM's all asking me how I feel about Brady and Gronk winning a Super Bowl as non-Patriots.  For those of you not in the know, I'm from Boston, a big Patriots fan, and a lover of all things Gronk.  Well, not the GRONK branded football that doubles as a bluetooth speaker -- that was one of the dumbest inventions I've ever seen -- you're playing music in your football, and then you throw it away from you… not well thought through.  Don't believe me -- search Gronkball on amazon. You'll see what I'm talking about. It also proves review can be manipulated since it has a 4.4 out of 5. Seriously, a $90 football Bluetooth speaker with Gronk's name on it. Off track. So how do I feel? Thrilled to be honest.   Look, there is always context needed. I wanted the Pats to keep Brady for his entire career, but in a way that was selfish, and no one expected that to happen. From 2014-2019 the Patriots have had terrible draft classes. Terrible. This means their current roster is depleted of talent and depth.  They were not built to win, even with Brady. If you go back and look at the 2018 season, there is no way that teams should have won a Super Bowl. They were 3-5 on the road that year, 11-5 overall, lacked any punch, looked old...and then dialed it up in the playoffs. 2019 - lack of talent, 12-4, incredibly weak schedule - lose in the wild card round vs the titans.  This roster didn't make sense to keep Brady. If you sign him to a multi-year deal, it delays the fact you really need to rebuild the roster from scratch… and you still aren't good enough to really win. Brady makes you way better than Cam Newton, but not Super Bowl good.  It made sense for him to move on. Both sides needed this. Forget all the tough love, personalities, and drama -- they were no longer made for each other from a football sense.  As for Gronk - the Patriots tried to trade him to the Lions prior to the 2018 season, so they already sent the message they no longer valued him. He helped them win the 2018 super bowl and retires. Took a year off, a different team values him more than the Pats did, he could play in his comfort zone with Tom. Deal. Bottom line, I hold no grudge against either. I wish it would have worked out better -- but if the Pats had developed a better supporting team around Brady over the previous 5 seasons… it may have. If they still valued Gronk, it may have. This is just people making football decisions that make sense all around. In 100 years we'lll talk about Brady like we talk about Babe Ruth… and I got to see a whole hell of a lot of him playing. Pretty cool. Congrats Goat. Ok, the stat line… Three stats to keep you updated and in the know on sports employment -- provided by workinsports.com the leading job board for the sports industry. I'm also laying in pieces of advice and strategy for your job search throughout this segment so don't you dare skip oover it. #1 -- 19,971 active sports jobs on WorkInSports.com -- now, I promised you last week we'd eclipse 20k, and we did earlier in the week, Right now we are at 19971 which is pretty flat week over week. And that includes a little over 300 active sports jobs in florida right now -- once you are done celebrating.  #2 - WorkInSports.com added 2,828 sports jobs over the last week, which is pretty much flat... #3 But means we added 404 sports jobs on average every day of the last week -- that's a lot of opportunity. OK, now three jobs that stood out for all the right reasons...to me. Job #1  Corporate Communications Coordinator for Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment -- if you are wondering who in the heck is Harris...

In this Locked on Sixers podcast, Keith Pompey talks about how Monday and Tuesday was a horrible look for Josh Harris and David Blitzer, the cochairmen of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, which owns the 76ers and New Jersey Devils. On Monday, the Sixers’ and Devils’ at-will employees making more than $50,000 were informed of temporary salary reductions of up to 20%. The reductions were to start on April 15 and run through June 30. But only after a lot of bad publicity, Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment decided not to recoup some of its lost revenue because of the coronavirus pandemic and the uncertainty of the NBA and NHL’s suspended seasons. In addition to talking about that, Pompey discusses how Joel Embiid stepped up for COVID-19 relief and was willing to help the Sixers employees. Learn more about your ad choices. Just how transformative will Alibaba's Olympic deal turn out to be? Why is DDMC Fortis's capture of AFC rights a milestone moment in the evolution of the global sports industry? And how, exactly, can you shift your Chinese strategy from engagement to monetisation? These were a few of the questions posed to the speakers at the Leaders Sport Business Summit in Beijing on 25th July. 250 senior international executives gathered at Sina's headquarters in the 'Beijing Silicon Valley' in the north west of China's capital to discuss strategies for growing sport and sports businesses in China, and to forge some valuable connections along the way. Backstage, we spoke to a selection of the speakers to get the inside track on their activity in one of the most beguiling but challenging markets in world sport. On the podcast: - Leon Xie (9:00) – the GM of Olympic Business at Alibaba on plans to activate the biggest deal in Olympic history; Alibaba's objectives and how it intends to measure success; and whether there are other major international sponsorship deals in the pipeline; - Scott O’Neil (21:15) – the CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment on the Philadelphia 76ers upcoming two-game trip to China; and what teams can do for their own commercial ends within a tightly controlled league environment; - Yu Hang (28:28) – the Executive Director of DDMC Fortis on how the deal for all AFC commercial rights from 2021 to 2028 came about; revenue targets and execution goals; why it represents a breakthrough moment for Chinese sports business; and his thoughts on international media rights values and consolidation in the Chinese market; - Victor Cui (40:45) – the ONE Championship CEO on the series' dominance in Asia; and why a China-specific strategy is imperative for cracking the market; - Kevin Sim (52:45) – the new Head of Asia Pacific at Bundesliga International on why China is on the verge of another huge growth cycle; and how the Bundesliga is going about trying to unearth the Yao Ming of football; - Kylie Rogers (1:01:39) – the Commercial GM of the AFL on playing the long game in China; and plans to supercharge China's participation in contact sports; - Alex Kaplan (1:07:21) - the President and GM of golf for Discovery on the gigantic new deal with the PGA Tour and why Asia - and China specifically - is key to its success; - Sam Li (1:13:02) – the Head of International Business for Sina Sports on why the organisation's burgeoning offline events business is providing a valuable new revenue stream distinct from the pure advertising media model that its competitors rely on.

"Have a passion for the business, have a great management team, and then search for real opportunity." Scott O'Neil is the CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment (HBSE), a group that manages the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils, and English Premier League's Crystal Palace. Their ongoing vision is to focus on acquiring sports franchises, sports venues, and sports and entertainment properties. Scott and I talk about the state of the teams in his current portfolio, then dive deep into the operational team at HBSE, the culture they've built, and the sales metrics (or what he calls "touches") they study to improve things like season ticket sales, digital impressions, and sponsorship opportunities.  I asked Scott two questions that I'm constantly working through, as well as observing others' management techniques. First, what does he look for in a qualified candidate, and second, how he balances oversight of multiple properties, strategy, and interpersonal relationships at the office. What he discloses is fascinating (hint: he's big into mindfulness and gratitude).  Hosted by professional athlete and entrepreneur, Suiting Up Podcast is a show that explores the psychology, playbook of tools, and strategies of the most influential people in sports, entrepreneurship, and entertainment.

Would you trust the process behind 'Trust the Process'? If you worked with Philadelphia 76ers CEO Scott O'Neil and his indefatigable CMO Katie O'Reilly you would. (Arguably, you'd have no choice.) O'Neil is one of the most forward-thinking senior leaders in sport, and he’s renowned for the inspiring working cultures he builds around him - a working culture at the 76ers that has resulted in the franchise consistently topping various NBA commercial tables even with a historically bad team on the court. As CEO of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE), he leads the 76ers organisation in the NBA, as its Prudential Center arena, the New Jersey Devils NHL team, the new Sixers Innovation Lab, and esports outfit Team Dignitas. On the conversational agenda: - Onboarding and the the working culture at HBSE and the 76ers; - The importance of language in the business of sport, 'Trust the Process', and what it means to be 'palms up'; - The nuts and bolts of an NBA international trip, and what the 76ers did with the 200 people they brought from Philadelphia to London last week; - Building an international content plan around a cosmopolitan team that is finally coming good; - Forging the next generation of sporting leaders; - NBA China trivia; - The Sixers Innovation Lab - what exactly is it? With a roster consisting of multiple international players, the 76ers capped their three-day trip to England by facing the Boston Celtics in the NBA London Game 2018, the franchise's first-ever regular season game played outside of North America. On the night of the event, January 11th, Sixers.com's Brian Seltzer sat down with Sixers Co-Managing Partner David Blitzer, a former London resident. During their conversation, the two discussed the significance of the Sixers' visit overseas, the state of the organization, and the philosophies that guide how the Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment group runs its various properties.

Who owns your favorite sports team? There are still the Jerry Joneses and MarK Cubans of the world that drive their team with cult of personality, but more and more family owned teams are being replaced by corporate ownership for financial stability. The owners of the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils, and Crystal Palace of the English Premier League created a new organization called Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment (or HBSE)with the goal of acquiring and growing sports franchises and venues. Owning one franchise is difficult but owning several across different sports and in different countries all over the world presents it own set of problems and opportunities. I sat down and spoke with Scott O'Neil and Hugh Weber of HBSE to find out what it's like combining sports and business.
