We've had a few guests on the show who have sold their businesses, but this case study is the first time we've explored what it looks like to buy your business back post-exit. After building BestSelf Co. to $45 million in sales, Cathryn Lavery sold her company to private equity in 2022 for 7 figures. She remained involved in the company as a brand ambassador, but watched as they made big changes that did little to grow the business. Then last year, she was given the once in a lifetime opportunity to buy the business back for pennies on the dollar - a six figure sum - when the private equity firm decided to close down. Now with a second chance to rebuild more sustainably, Cathryn is applying what she learned from her first go-around and taking notes on what the private equity firm did well and where they fell short to fix the mistakes she's inherited. Was it worth it? Here's the full scoop. View the transcript for this episode at: https://otter.ai/u/7q9URJWpWve5ZPDkpQJML7VBe-E?utm_source=copy_url Thank you to our sponsor! After accepting a job as an architect in NYC, the company delayed Cathryn's start date by 6 weeks, so she sold products on Shopify to make ends meet and continued after her full time job started. To organize her busy life, she designed a productivity journal that raised over $322,000 in 34 days on Kickstarter, and BestSelf Co was born. The company has expanded into a brand of carefully curated journals and conversation card decks designed to help you live the life you want. Endorsed by Shark Tank's Daymond John, BestSelf Co won Shopify's Build a Bigger Business competition, received mentorship from Tony Robbins, and sold over $45 million in product before being acquired in 2022. Cathryn just repurchased the company earlier this year and is looking forward to having a do-over and applying the lessons she's learned over the years.
How often do entrepreneurs get a second chance with their first love? In this episode, join me as I converse with Cathryn Lavery, the founder of BestSelf Co., who navigated the unusual path of selling her business to a private equity firm, only to buy it back after seeing its potential falter under new management. Cathryn shares her initial reasons for selling, the insights from stepping away, and what drove her to reclaim control and re-inject her vision into the brand. Listen in as Cathryn discusses the strategic maneuvers and negotiations involved in reacquiring her company, how she leveraged AI technology to streamline operations, and the lessons learned from viewing her business through the analytical lens of her buyers. She also dives into the tactical changes implemented post-acquisition to revitalize the brand, ensuring its alignment with her entrepreneurial spirit and long-term objectives. Cathryn Lavery is the founder of BestSelf Co., a productivity tool-based business that sells journals, planners and conversation decks to help people achieve their goals and be their best selves. Cathryn moved to New York City from Ireland with only $758 and after the challenges she faced in her role as an architect and not making a livable wage, she was forced to find other means of income on the side. Despite having 7 years under her belt she realized this line of work was not the path for her. She eventually decided to go off on her own and transformed herself into an 8-figure founder. Going back to the early days, her side hustle eventually grew into something much bigger and that's when Cathryn launched her Kickstarter campaign in 2015 to crowdfund her first product. BestSelf Co. sold $45 million in products before getting acquired in 2022, but recently Cathryn repurchased back her company to do things differently. In this week's episode, Cathryn walks us through how she was forced into entrepreneurship because of necessity when she received a massive pay cut and the steps she took to figure things out when it was the most challenging for her. Cathryn shares how the idea for BestSelf was born, what she did to build up her confidence to take the leap, the early days of the business, and how she and her team managed to raise over $300,000 on her Kickstarter campaign with the goal only being $15k. We talk about her top productivity tips and lifestyle hacks that can help all of us be our best selves. She tells us about steps to take to make sure you're finding the right business partner, why she decided to repurchase her company after 2 years of it being acquired, what it's like to juggle being a new mom and founder, and so much more. I've got an incredible interview to share with you all today that you do NOT want to miss! I recently sat down with productivity guru and journaling sensation Cathryn Lavery for a raw, uncensored chat that has never been heard before. As the founder of BestSelf Co and the creator of the wildly popular Self Journal that has taken over social media, Cathryn has built an empire empowering people to unlock their full potential through goal-setting and intentional living. But there's so much more to her story that you likely haven't heard. Trust me when I say Cathryn's journey has been anything but conventional. This rebellious entrepreneur was running full-fledged business operations in elementary school out of her mother's kitchen (I'll let Cathryn tell you exactly what those were). But flashforward from baking up a storm to studying architecture for nearly 7 years in college and grad school. Yup, you read that right! Listen in as Cathryn gets vulnerable about the uncertainty she faced and the calculated risks that eventually paid off in unimaginable ways. And this episode is jam-packed with so many golden nuggets of business, mindset and manifestation wisdom as Cathryn reflects on the major inflection points along her journey. You'll discover the unlikely way she met her business partner, the failures and wins they faced together, as well as the one game-changing piece of advice Cathryn received that completely transformed her relationship with her customers. I found myself furiously scribbling down notes during our exchange because Cathryn brilliantly broke down the exact templates and frameworks she's created for others to succeed. From morning rituals to unlocking productivity, sales funnels and minimalist marketing strategies, she generously shares the details other "gurus" often keep hidden behind paywalls and closed doors. So pull out your journals and prepare to have your mind blown as we uncover the secrets behind BestSelf's meteoric rise and the unlikely serial entrepreneur who started it all! Cathryn brought the straight fire and kept it real the entire conversation - if you're ready for pure inspiration and non-BS business advice from a self-made queen, press play NOW! "Having tools to lean on and support yourself when things get tough can be reassuring and empowering because you feel as though you're doing something proactive." Life is an up-and-down spiral. As a result, we get to experience the full spectrum of human emotions, which is both beautiful and challenging. But as we walk through life, we get to discover more about who we are because of the way we dance through the highs and hold ourselves through the lows. The lows can be challenging and complex because they can evoke feelings of overwhelm, uncertainty, chaos, stress, anxiety, and even burnout. So how can we stay grounded and clarify our thoughts during these times? Let's find some answers in this episode... In this week's episode, we explore: The power of supporting ourselves through pressure. The fear of losing the ground beneath our feet. What does it mean to stay grounded? Why overwhelming emotions stifle our decision-making skills. Using stream-of-consciousness journaling to articulate the turmoil within. "Are the things you're chasing the things YOU want… or are they desires you've inherited from society?"Do your activities in the outside world leave you feeling fulfilled? Or do you feel a sense of emptiness, a lack of fulfillment, and a nagging feeling that surely, there must be more to life than this?If you feel any of the above, know you're not alone. It's not uncommon to feel confused either. After all, you thought you were headed in the right direction!Fortunately, there is a solution. How childhood experiences can make us lose trust in our self-expression. My personal story of reclaiming fearless self-expression. The power of the edit. And more...Deep down we all have a deep need to be seen for our truth. We're drawn to authenticity because there's a part of us that wants to experience life without the social mask. We want to feel that feeling of being uncensored and untamed. It can take huge courage to show your full self. One of the reasons I journal is to access and claim the truth of who I am. This type of journaling is deep work - sacred work even...But I'm fully aware that there are times I don't go deep enough. When we stay in the shallows with our inner inquiries, we limit the wisdom we can uncover. In turn, we miss out on the full potential that journaling has to offer. In this episode, we unpack the most common reasons why we get stuck in superficiality. Then reveal some proven, powerful practices for going deeper than we've ever gone before. Enjoy! When we encounter unexpected change, the shift in experience can knock us off our centre. Certainty is replaced with unpredictability, and that can leave us feeling exposed, vulnerable, and even unsafe. When our emotions are high, intelligence can be low. In turn, it's harder to think clearly. This can lead to inertia and a feeling of stuckness. The spiral gets reinforced! "When there's chaos in our lives, being able to come back to ourselves, recalibrate, and feel grounded in who we are is a powerful way to navigate life's ups and downs." Journaling is a powerful tool that can help you empower yourself in moments like these. In turn, you can connect with your inner wisdom, clear your head, and get clarity on what to do next.
