52a - BBC Ghost Stories for Christmas: The Ash Tree

General Witchfinders

A Ghost Story for Christmas is a series of annual British short films first broadcast on BBC One from 1971 to 1978, and sporadically revived by the BBC since 2005. With one exception, the original films were directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark and shot on 16 mm color film. The series aimed to adapt classic ghost stories for television, echoing the tradition of telling supernatural tales at Christmas. So far, we've covered A Warning to the Curious and The Signalman in Episode 21, Whistle and I'll Come to You and Stigma in Episode 32, and The Stalls of Barchester along with The Treasure of Abbot Thomas in Episodes 41a and 41b.This year, we're bringing you Lost Hearts on New Year's Eve. But tonight, Christmas Eve—the traditional night for ghost stories—we'll be discussing The Ash Tree. Written for the screen by David Rudkin and based on M.R. James's short story, The Ash Tree was directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark. Looking back at Clark's credits, it's surprising we haven't mentioned that he also directed one of our favorite monkey-man TV drama events from the 1990s—Chimera. That's definitely something we should cover, assuming we can find a way to watch it. The Ash Tree aired on December 23, 1975, and featured Edward Petherbridge in the dual roles of Sir Richard and Sir Matthew. According to IMDb, Petherbridge began his career in 1961 and appeared in a wide range of film and TV roles. He's apparently best known as the sharp and snooty sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey in The Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries. Impressively, he kept working until 2017, with one of his final roles being the voice of a gentleman fish in one of Tim Burton's Alice films. The cast also included Preston Lockwood as Dr. Croome, Barbara Ewing as Anne Mothersole, and, happily for our status as a secret Doctor Who podcast (though perhaps less happily for James), Lalla Ward as Lady Augusta. Barbara Ewing had an impressive career on the small screen, appearing in shows like Peak Practice, Casualty, The Bill, an episode of Hammer House of Horror, and even the Pertwee-fronted game show Whodunnit?. She also appeared in Chiller, a British horror/fantasy anthology series from 1995 that Ross has somehow never seen but seems to pop up constantly on people's CVs. are you two aware of this and should we be covering it?) Beyond acting, Ewing is also an accomplished novelist, with nine books to her name. Her novel A Dangerous Vine even made the long list for the Orange Prize. Lalla Ward had a fascinating career trajectory. Her first film after leaving the Central School of Speech and Drama was Hammer's Vampire Circus. She was close friends with Douglas Adams, who famously took her as his date to a screening of The Empire Strikes Back in the early 1980s. Adams also introduced her to her second husband, Richard Dawkins (for whom she would later provide illustrations for his controversial books), at his 40th birthday party—they were the only two who showed up on time! Of course, her first husband was Tom Baker, with whom she starred in Doctor Who as the second incarnation of the Time Lady Romana from 1979 to 1981. There really should be a General Witchfinders drinking game where you take a sip every time we mention someone in this next bit: In 2019, a modern-day audio adaptation of The Ash Tree was released by Bafflegab Productions. Written by Matthew Holness, it starred Amanda Abbington, Reece Shearsmith, and John Sessions. Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. In 1690, the English county of Suffolk is wracked with a fear of witches. Many girls and women are accused of casting spells and causing mayhem. One such accused woman is a Mrs. Mothersole, a wealthier noblewoman who has property of her own. The only evidence of her witchcraft are eyewitness accounts by Sir Matthew Fell, the owner of a local seat named Castringham. Outside his bedroom window grows a monstrous ash tree, where on moonlit nights he would sometimes supposedly see Mrs. Mothersole climbing the trunk and snipping branches with a dagger. She always escaped and disappeared before he could catch her. Despite her pleas, she is found guilty and hanged. Before the noose is pulled, she dully intones "There will be guests at the Hall". She is buried in the local graveyard. A few weeks later, Sir Matthew and the local vicar are walking by the ash tree at dusk when they spy a creature in the branches that disappears before they can get a good look. As it is a warm night, the squire leaves his window open. The next day, he is found dead in his bed with a severe look of pain and terror on his face. Though a postmortem is performed, no cause of death can be found. Sir Matthew's son, Sir Matthew II, inherits Castringham and refuses to stay in his father's bedroom. Over forty years pass and he passes away in 1735. When the family plot in the local graveyard needs to be expanded to fit his remains, Mrs. Mothersole's resting place is exhumed to make room and the coffin is found to be empty, with no body. The locals are puzzled as to who could have robbed the grave. Sir Matthew II's son, Sir Richard, inherits the seat and also refuses to stay in the supposedly cursed bedroom. In 1754, however, he grows tired of the alternative chamber he chose, as it is cold and smoky. He orders his housekeeper to move his bed into the room where his grandfather died decades previously. That night, he keeps his window closed but hears something scratching on it. The next day, he is visited by the grandson of the vicar from all those years ago, now a vicar himself. They chat about Sir Matthew's death and discover an old Bible of his, where he has written down his desire for the ash tree to be felled. Sir Richard assures the vicar a man from the village will come the next day and dispose of it. He remarks on the strange scratching noises from the window the night previously, blaming the sounds on the branches scraping the glass. The vicar says this is impossible, as the branches don't reach the window. They conclude it must have been a mouse that climbed the ivy. That evening, several guests arrive for a weekend visit. After a night of pleasantries, everyone retires to their rooms. In the middle of the night, something climbs through Sir Richard's open window and bites him. The next morning, he is found dead in bed and the guests congregate to discover the secret of the tree. A gardener climbs a ladder and peeks into a hollow in the center, seeing something that causes him to drop his lantern in alarm and set the tree ablaze. The guests watch in horror as countless large, venomous spiders crawl out of the hollow on fire, dying on the grass. An investigation of the tree reveals a cave beneath it with a cavernous spider's nest and the withered skeleton of a woman (presumably the remains of Mrs. Mothersole), dead for at least fifty years.

Taking Tchaikovsky's ballet and in a set heavily influenced by the lavish Hollywood musicals of the 1930s, Bourne's production is a spectacle as it journeys between Dr. Dross' drab Orphanage, through a shimmering, ice-skating winter wonderland, and into the mouth-watering Sweetieland full of dancing sugar coated goodies. Complete with newly-refreshed delectable sets and costumes, combined with sparkling new choreography, Luke Whitlock explores with Bourne how this reinvention comes about. From preparations way ahead of the opening night of the tour, and then heading to London to light up the Christmas Season, the creative process for Bourne doesn't stop.

As a small child, Matthew Bourne used to put on shows in his parents’ living room in East London; by the age of eight or nine, he was staging musicals for the whole school, co-opting his friends to star in Mary Poppins and Cinderella. (He played an ugly sister.) Fast forward to today and Sir Matthew Bourne is now Britain’s most popular and successful choreographer and director, with a long list of awards for shows including Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Cinderella, The Car Man (based on Carmen), Edward Scissorhands, and The Red Shoes. Sir Matthew has become particularly associated with Christmas shows and he’s somehow nailed the essence of the Christmas “treat”. He attributes this to memories of the shows his parents took him to. But, despite their outings, it never occurred to anyone in the family that Matthew might make a living in the theatre, and he was twenty-two before he took his first dance lesson. This, he believes, has given him a strong connection with the audiences coming to see his shows. Despite this, there have been some bumps in the road: when he first staged Swan Lake with all-male swans and two male dancers dancing a love duet, some of the audience walked out. He reflects on the challenges of creating dances in which men dance together but are not strong enough to lift each other. Matthew Bourne is a profoundly musical choreographer: he talks about listening to famous pieces of Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev over and over again. Other choices include a Percy Grainger setting of an old Christmas carol; film music by Bernard Hermann; Mary Poppins; and his favourite song from his favourite musical, The Sound of Music: “Climb Every Mountain” – which could describe his own stellar career. On today’s show, our favorite Latin archeologist, known felon, prison-escapee, singer-stalker, and all-around amazing human we think, Raul pops in out of nowhere to regale us on his Flat Earth Theories, how Sir Matthew could be in an imposter and how he’s been living in Steve’s shed for past week. Honestly, this is friggin’ hilarious. You just have to listen.

Grognostics - Where craft beer meets the unexplained

Throughout history, dating back thousands of years humans lived in small groups called tribes. Each person had a designated role and was expected to sacrifice for the greater good of the group. If they didn’t, people may have died or suffered. The concept of tribe is so deep-rooted in the human DNA that soldiers would prefer to return to war with their fellow comrades instead of being members of the very society they longed for when they were fighting. It’s the reason that settlers who were captured by natives in the settling of our country snuck back to live with the natives once they were rescued. Could our lack of tribe in our modern world be the cause of the breakdown of our society? Depression, alcohol use, drug abuse, mass shootings, a breakdown of family, lack of community, a void of purpose- are at all-time highs. Truth is, there’s something is missing from our lives, we may just not realize what. What’s missing is our tribe. Join us for a tantalizingly fun episode where we need a whopping four beer reviews (Knee Deep, Sierra Nevada, and more) to explore how to arrive at humanity’s collective happiness, which is “just say Hi; hey don’t be an a-hole,” by the way. Jevon, George, and Nick guest with skit help from the amazing Amie. Sir Matthew regales us with a trip deep into South Central’s heartland. (28min)

2018 is in the books and we have a lot to be thankful for. We had some amazing guests this year on the show - Ira Pastor, CEO of Bioquark joined us to discuss the possibility of humans living forever. A new correspondent in the field Ada Pinkerton joined our cast of characters. We visited three amazing breweries; 101 North, St. Florian's and Steetcar 82 (coming soon). The Mojo sisters were back again, their whole family in full effect. Amanda Karr regaled us with ghost stories. Spiritual Medium, Evanne Jordan mystified us with her knowledge of Steve's inner workings. And then there was of course, the always entertaining, rarely serious Sir Matthew who finally discovered his porcelain-skinned crush was right in front of his nose the whole time. And what's up with that archeologist Raul? The one in prison? Will he be back? And lest we not forget the oft-obscure, always bizarre Trapper who leaves random voicemails which I'll be honest are quite bizarre and not just a little. Additional thanks to some of the regulars - the Producer, Amie, Jason Reedy, Kelly Stravers, Jevon, Nick, Gaby and of course Oisin, our Irish beer expert. Special thank you to first-timer Marc Ellis for his awe-inspiring knowledge on our Cosmic Queries shows. So what's next for 2019? Or more aptly, the next few months? Give this a quick listen and find out why dontcha?

We’ve all gazed up at the stars and wondered - what exactly is out there? The infiniteness of space is downright unfathomable. Then there’s those pesky black holes, believed to suck up everything in their path. And dark matter? Escape Velocity? Time dilation? What does it all mean man? As mere specks of flesh in the vast cosmos, we are no more than a metaphorical ant gazing up at a giant; unable to actually comprehend the significance of it all. On today’s show we do our best to figure it all out. Spoiler alert - we don’t. But exactly what are black holes? Are they a portals to other dimensions? How about the idea that you age slower in space than you do on earth? There are so many other cosmic questions we tackle as we sit down with the smartest man we know,  Marc Ellis, who will knock your space boots off with his knowledge of the universe. Today’s show will educate. Check back next week for a deeper philosophical dive into what it all means. Sir Matthew joins us at (26:30).

We don’t care if your plasma-alcohol level is above the legal space limit. We say, hop aboard the Grog rocket ship for the next installment of our extraterrestrial duet. On today’s show we hear from two alien experiencers who regale us with real-life alien encounters, Sir Matthew calls in from a lake in the northwest known for its alien sightings, and we do our best to intoxicatingly dissect ancient art depicting UFOs (and Popes with oddly shaped hockey sticks but that’s neither here nor there).

430 years ago, 88 men 17 women and 11 children left the only life they’d ever known in England to forge a new one in the new world. They were promised bounties, riches and a place in history. They got one, sort of. Soon after arrival, a colonist is murdered by natives so with food dwindling they send a colonist back to England for more supplies. When he returns, he discovers what no archeologist, historian or ballywhacker podcasters have been able to explain for centuries. On this Thanksgiving episode these turkey-like show hosts investigate the oldest mystery in American history along with the help of Sir Matthew (35:00) and a familiar friend.

The Virtual Reality craze is taking off.  VR is no longer just about teleporting yourself inside a video game to battle ferocious monsters and diabolic villains. In the not-so-distant future you might be able to take vacations, walk a day inside someone else’s shoes, viewing the world as they world, or share an intimate experience as you would in person – all from the comfort of your own home. Literally everything you do today could ultimately be inside a VR experience. But…what does that mean for humanity as people get more used to experiencing the world from their VR chair in their basement? What happens to the tangible world as we know it? Real human connections? Reproduction? Basic human needs? Life itself? Could this be the beginning of the end? Debut appearance from field correspondent Sir Matthew. Beer review from Ely Alexander and Oisin O’Reilly. Amie stops by.
