624. Part 2 of Ed Branley's return to the porch to talk about the 200th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette's visit to America in 1825. Fifty years after the Revolutionary War, Lafayette returned for a triumphant tour of the United States. Nowhere was he more welcome than in his visit to Louisiana. Ed is a volunteer docent at the Cabildo Museum in Jackson Square, and the Museum has a fantastic eshibit commemorating the occasion. "Bienvenue Lafayette. Thu, April 10, 2025 - Sun, January 18, 2026. Commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette's Visit to Louisiana. Lafayette's tour was marked by public celebrations, music, and the creation of commemorative items, making him a precursor to modern celebrity. One notable stop was his five-day visit to New Orleans in April 1825, where city officials spared no expense, spending the equivalent of $450,000 to transform the Cabildo into lavish accommodations for Lafayette, symbolizing the city's growing significance in the United States. "To commemorate the bicentennial of Lafayette's tour, the Louisiana State Museum presents Bienvenue Lafayette from April 10, 2025, to January 18, 2026, opening on the exact 200th anniversary of his arrival in New Orleans. The exhibition features artifacts, documents, and works of art from local and national collections, and offers visitors insight into Lafayette's legacy as a champion of liberty, democracy, and the abolition of slavery. This exhibition deepens the public's understanding of Lafayette's impact on both the United States and France and highlights New Orleans' role in the broader historical narrative" (Cabildo). In some ways, there are two Louisianas. There's the one the tourism marketing folks sell to visitors, centered on New Orleans on one side of Baton Rouge and Cajun Country on the other. And then there's the Louisiana that we live in, which is Baton Rouge. Maybe to tourist salespeople it looks like there's nothing very exciting going on here, but that is far from the truth. Baton Rouge is anything but a civil-service seat of government town like other state capitals. Though we do have a decent number of people who work in government departments, we also have people who create a unique Louisiana culture that's a tapestry made up of all kinds of threads that are drawn together here. This tapestry is created by people like Stephanie's two lunch guests: Oscar Tickle and Kimberly Szuszka. Oscar is a multimedia producer and content editor at Melara Enterprises, which publishes the Baton Rouge Business Report and 225 magazine, among other publications. And in his job there, Oscar gets to help tell some of those interesting Baton Rouge stories through videos and podcasts. Oscar joined the company in 2023, after graduating from the LSU Manship School of Mass Communications as a journalism major with a focus on environmental reporting. He also has made his own documentary – a fascinating 45-minute film about the Hunt for Louisiana’s Swamp Cows. Kimberly Szuszka is adding to the unique cultural tapestry in Baton Rouge with Okki Tokki, the city’s only Korean restaurant. Kimberly opened the restaurant in 2024 in the heart of downtown and specializes in a casual, build-your-own bowls model, with a focus on exposing customers to the kinds of authentic Korean ingredients diners from around here may not be accustomed to seeing. Kimberly grew up in Baton Rouge and opened the restaurant because she said she always wanted to have a Korean restaurant in her city and after graduating from LSU, decided to fill the void herself. She is also active in promoting Asian culture through organizations like the Asian Night market, which we talked about on this show previously. Out to Lunch is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard. The Ocean State is pretty far from Louisiana, but the sound of Cajun country can be found all around Rhode Island – thanks in part to Alan Bradbury and Michelle Kaminsky. They've been dedicated to playing and teaching Cajun, Creole and Zydeco music here for decades, bringing back what they've learned from master musicians in Louisiana. They're two members of the Cajun band Magnolia, which has been playing together throughout New England since 1989. For this week's episode of Artscape, they joined morning host Luis Hernandez in the studio for this interview and live performance.

Welcome to this explosive episode of “Light ‘Em Up” — actively being downloaded in 108 countries!Thank you so much for your enormous response to our previous multiple record-setting episode! As we continue to speak truth to power and shine an intense spotlight on the error-filled autopsy report and the unsubstantiated claims of the coroner, as well as the shoddy, crooked, backwoods investigational practices of the West Carroll Parish Sheriff's Department and the shady, collusive actions on the part of the 5th Judicial Circuit District Attorney Ms. Penny Douciere — we offer this brand new fact-based, investigatory episode to you.We submit that those involved in the “investigation” of this case willfully have chosen to look the other way. THAT is a text-book definition of corruption and a dereliction of official duty under the color of authority. We ask, why? Why wouldn't the Louisiana State Police open an investigation? Why the rush to judgement on the part of the coroner? On February 9, 2023 in Oak Grove, Louisiana (population 1,441), Crystal McCrory Jones was found dead in her home from what was reported to be a “self-inflicted” gunshot wound to the head. Her husband, Tony Jones (who reportedly at one time was an employee with the same W. Carroll Sheriff's Department charged with “investigating” the case) was reported to be the last person who saw her alive, at or around 8 am on the day of her death.Within 1 hour and 45 minutes of the knowledge of Crystal's death, the case was ruled to be a suicide. The fact pattern shows that there was extensive bruising on her hands, inner thighs, and a fingernail was broken off of her left hand: evidence of a pre-mortem struggle.Bruising is bleeding into the surrounding tissue and there's no bleeding if the heart isn't pumping. Bruising is indicative of clear signs that there was an intense struggle, before she died — as once the heart stops pumping blood --- there can be no bruising. As education is always a foundational pillar of Light ‘Em Up, in this fact-packed episode we drill down on:♦ What is a medico-legal death investigation — and why it is of the utmost importance that it takes place in a timely, professional and painstakingly thorough manner. It didn't!We define:♦ What an autopsy and autopsy report are, the cause and manner of death and criteria for determining a suicide. We ask:♦ Who called in a “welfare check” on Crystal in her home, and why? Were they trying to establish an alibi? We investigate:♦ The difference between a suicide and a homicide. We highlight:♦ specific Louisiana laws governing coroners' duties, autopsies and investigations — which expose officials as derelict in their duty.We clarify:♦ the 4 major problems in conducting death investigations.♦ And we instruct on the 5 objectives of an autopsy and a ton of other compelling aspects of this mysterious case. How is it that every aspect of the criminal justice system and those officials charged with honoring their oath to protect and serve and do their sworn duty failed Crystal?Crystal loved life — her presence blessed everyone who encountered her.The sad truth is that if this can happen to her — it can happen to you! We're in this fight! We'll continue with this case until we see some form of “justice” delivered to Crystal's surviving family members.Follow this link to the Change.org petition for Crystal as well as the Facebook page remembering her here. All persons are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.Visit our sponsors Newsly & Feedspot
During the 1990's, a sports phenomenon took hold in South Louisiana that was impressive yet unexpected. In the part of the country where football is king and the other sports are fighting for relevance, the sport of hockey fired the imaginations of passionate sports fans in the heart of Cajun Country. Host and native of South Louisiana Dana Auguster is joined in this episode by longtime friend and six year ticket holder of the Louisiana Ice Gators Shane DeRouen. They will remember and reminisce about time hockey and not football, was the most popular sport in an area that was not known for pucks. Later in the show we will send a shout out to former hall of fame head coach of the then San Diego Chargers, Don Coryell. The very day that he was hired, Sept 25, 1978 was both the best day in the sports history of San Diego California but also the darkest day that city's history. We are staying in the Softball world this week - today's guest comes to us expressly recommended by TPP alum Jamie Henk (ep.85) and when Coach Henk talks we listen! We've also got a Team Player Podcast 1st today, as our guest is our first one who is currently serving as both the Head Softball Coach AND Head Principal of Liberty High School! Welcome Karen Slack to the show! - Growing up in Cajun Country, the small town of Jeanerette outside of Lafayette, LA with sugar cane fields and crawfish ponds all around you. It was in 5th grade however that Karen moved to Liberty, and she's been in love with that community ever since. - Coach explains what is was like playing on the 1st ever Liberty High School Softball Team when the sport was offered for the 1st time in 1995, and describes how when she started at UH that there was no softball team. It seems crazy now given the extreme popularity of softball at the college and high school levels but Softball didn't even start at a major university like Texas until 1998. - Karen is an outlier in that she is a coach who has ascended to the highest levels of leadership academically as well. During the course of her storied career she has advanced to serve as both a Department Chair and is currently serving as Head Softball Coach and Head Principal! We discuss how oftentimes coaches get a bad wrap in the classroom, but how in order to be a great coach you really need to be a great teacher, and how she has found that coaches are often amongst the best classroom teachers on her staff, and how there are some excellent classroom-only teachers that she would add to her coaching staff any day! - Karen isn't our 1st TPP alum to win a state championship, heck she isn't our 1st to win multiple championships as Jessica Tully-Mitchell Bragg won 2 state volleyball championships at Denton Calvary Academy. But she is our first to win THREE state titles bringing home the gold in 2018 as well as back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023! Coach tells us what has gone into the tremendous success of late at Liberty High School. - Finally as someone who has dedicated their entire adult life to her beloved Liberty High School, we are treated to Coach Karen Slack's all-time Liberty Panther Softball Mt. Rushmore!! Join the Team Player Revolution! The biggest help is to leave a 5-star rating. This is what moves us up the rankings so more people can hear the stories of coaches changing lives Follow on Twitter @coach_kovo Hit us up at teamplayerpodcast@gmail.com - we lift up our own inside Team Player Nation, all guest suggestions/feedback is welcome! Blair Broussard, owner of Bee Positively Social, a social media consulting firm, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss effective digital marketing tools for small business owners in today's market. Blair has also been an active real estate agent with District South by Real Broker in Lafayette since 2017. A chance to play middle blocker for the UL - Lafayette women's volleyball team lured Blair to Lafayette. Transferring from Centenary College after her freshman year, Blair recounted her first trip to Lafayette down I-49 with her dad and spotting a dead alligator on the side of the road. As a native of Mesquite TX you would think she would have been scared by this, but Blair thought it was cool and such a different experience from her years growing up in Dallas. The deal was sealed upon arriving at UL, where she was given a tour of the swamp on campus and of course, another chance to see an alligator! Blair Claypoole Broussard was lured to Lafayette LA to play middle blocker for the Ragin Cajuns' volleyball team. Noting the vastly different cultural experiences (including the alligators!), Blair says that "Volleyball is how I came to know and love Cajun Country!" While Blair graduated in Education from UL - Lafayette and also earned an MBA from the university, she was self taught on how to market her real estate services to garner effective social media presence. She is a big fan of organic activity on social media, i.e., posting experiences as they happen rather than relying solely on scheduled posts, so that the social media algorithms don't pick up your activity and identify it as a 'robot.' With that said, she does recommend that you schedule posts to occur daily and consider using paid ads for important messaging. Blair is driven to help others tell their stories, especially small business owners who don't know how or where to start in marketing their business. While we may wish we could just print a paper flyer and post it at the local coffee house or restaurant, the days of that being an effective marketing strategy are long over. Blair Broussard is the proprietor of Bee Positive Social, assisting small business owners in systemizing and automating the appropriate social media tools to effectively grow their business. Today, people "post" their flyers and other advertising materials on social media. The particular platform you should select for your business is dependent upon your target business clients as every social media platform has its own demographic. Facebook and Instagram are by far the most popular but again, your preferred platform will be tied to the referral network you want to tap into. Millennials and younger people will gravitate more to Tik Tok and YouTube, especially YouTube Shorts. "YouTube shorts (short 20 second video clips) are a great way to expand your reach and grow your business. You can use that link on so many other platforms." For clients that are new to social media promotion, Blair will have them just pick one to start and "get their user friendly ability up." But most businesses today have at least one medium where they post and she will help them expand their repertoire to two. Blair advises that your social media page should answer the most FAQ's such as, "Where are you located? How can I purchase or sign up? How can I contact you?" "Small business word of mouth referral networking is changing dramatically. Millennials are not going to leave a Google review. They will share the Instagram profile of your business. Not just your phone number. That's how small business word of mouth is happening." Blair recommends utilizing Linktree or Milkshake apps that optimize your social media traffic by streamlining all of your info, products and links (website, blogs, social media platforms, etc.) to be accessible in one click in your bio. Blair is a proponent of blogging as it establishes your credibility as an expert in your field. Plus,

Our guests are Ari Dolegowski and Jenée Naquin, husband and wife, as well as adventurers who have lived in Lafayette since 2020. The couple moved from New York City with their son, Noam, to be closer to Jenee's family members who live in Eunice. Jenee is a brand stylist and digital content creator with vast experience in bringing luxury brands to life through digital marketing. A native of Eunice, she graduated from Loyola in New Orleans and then moved to NYC to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She worked in corporate design, has experienced living in a handbag factory in China in order to learn the ins and outs of the accessory manufacturing process, and was part of the team that built Jessica Simpson's iconic handbag line. After 13 years in fashion design, Jenee founded her branding company, JSQ Creative Agency, in 2017. Ari is a Bio-Performance Therapist, offering transformative massage sessions with a tailored approach rooted in Physical Therapy and Eastern medicine through AriD Therapy & Training. He had the good fortune to apprentice as an assistant to a doctor of physical therapy and a Chinese medical practitioner. He attended traditional Chinese medical schools and studied massage therapy for a month in Thailand. A fellow who has walked an incredibly interesting life journey, Ari played pro soccer in Chile, Tel Aviv and the U. S. Along the way, he studied at Yeshiva University in Jerusalem. Ari taught high school Physical Education in New York City before settling on his career as a bio-performance/massage therapist. Ari and Jenée met and married in NYC after their early career international travels. While they both had strong ties to New York, they had decided it was time to move in order to pursue a different lifestyle than offered by the Big Apple. Pre-Covid, they had traveled to several places looking for a Utopian site. The onset of COVID and its shutdown of city life brought things to a head, as Jenée recalled, "If you were on the 15th floor of a highrise, like us, riding an elevator was a challenge. New York became intense and nervous. Much of the population moved out and a troubled, homeless population remained....all of a sudden taking a walk to the Park to get outdoors wasn't fun." Ari and Jenée took out a whiteboard and listed all the things they wanted in a good place to live. Louisiana fit the bill, and particularly Lafayette, as it was close to Jenée's family. Ari was a bit nervous about the big move to Lafayette, in part because of mosquitoes, but also because of our very small Jewish community. "Thank goodness for the Temple Shalom in Lafayette!" About a year after the family settled in Lafayette, Ari turned to Jenée and shared how happy he was to be be here. Interestingly, Jenée also came to realize how important Judaism had become in her life. In NYC, there was vibrant Jewish community and they were surrounded by many other Jews, even sending their son to a Jewish school. She had fallen in love with the Jewish faith and lovely traditions. "It took me coming back to Cajun Country to realize that I was a Jew!" While she had initially resisted converting her faith from Catholic to Jewish while living in New York, Jenée began studying Judaism and has now converted and is an active member of Temple Shalom. Jenée Naquin and Ari Dolegowski in their backyard Sukkah (hut) talking about their Jewish faith during the weeklong festival of Sukkot in October 2023. Photo by Brad Bowie of The Acadiana Advocate. Jenée and Ari's young son, Noam, whose nickname is "Kiki," is also showing signs of being a creative entrepreneur. Learning how to juice satsumas and other fruits by his grandfather, Noam has made the local news several times due to the popularity of his fresh squeezed juice, marketed under the brand name Kiki's Juice Box. "Noam is a born entertainer and this endeavor has been one of my favorite branding projects," Jenée says. With the help of his mother,

There are two principal ways of Carnival group ritual in Louisiana. One is the New Orleans style float parade with bands, marching groups and maskers flinging throws from floats. And the other is the Cajun style Courir de Mardi Gras in which mounted riders and runners go different places begging ingredient for a gumbo. Both have their own indigenous music and traditions. Dixie Poche joins Errol Laborde, executive editor of Louisiana Life, along with podcast producer Kelly Massicot to talk about her new book "Cajun Mardi Gras: Chasing Chickens and Making Gumbo." Learn how different communities along the Cajun prairie have different costume elements including cone-shaped hats and masks made from screens. We'll also answer the question, which town is the epicenter of the Courir culture?

Ronald Dominique confessed to raping and murdering 23 boys and men between the ages of 16 and 46 between 1997 and 2006 across six Louisiana parishes. When he was caught, investigators were shocked by... how harmless and unintelligent he seemed. How did THIS guy do what he did for so long? In part, he was able to do what he did because he targeted the poorest members of one of the poorest area of the nation. Law enforcement where and when he was killing didn't have much of a budget to dedicate enough resources to finding him, and also, the people he killed weren't people, typically, who kept regular social schedules. Police had a hard time, over and over, figuring out exactly where victims had been right before the died. Ronald was NOT a criminal mastermind. Not be a long stretch. He just figured out a simple con to get guys to tie themselves up so he could do what he wanted to do to them, and he got away with it because those guys typically lived high risk lifestyles in an area full of hard times and few resources. Despite how dark this subject is, I actually find a lot of humor to lighten it up because in addition to being a serial killer, AND an idiot, Ronnie Joe was also a Patti Labelle impersonator, a dude who had some super interesting rationalizations for why he had to do what he did, and a man with, apparently, the tightest, most fragile butthole on the planet. At 47 years old, Delhomme is now a Panthers team radio broadcaster, and a successful horse breeder in his native Louisiana. He and I spoke in The Observer's recording studio, and on Part 1 of our conversation, Delhomme discusses current quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Panthers' protects for the upcoming season; how Delhomme brought a taste of his upbringing in Cajun Country to Charlotte; and the legacy of X-Clown, the play that won the Panthers a double-overtime thriller in the 2003 playoffs. Part 2 of our conversation is available exclusively for subscribers on Apple Podcasts. Sports Legends of the Carolinas is hosted by Scott Fowler. It's produced by Jeff Siner and Kata Stevens. 478. Part 1 of our interview with Katy Morlas Shannon. Katy is returning to the podcast to talk about her new book, Antoine of Oak Alley: The Unlikely Origin of Southern Pecans and the Enslaved Man Who Cultivated Them. "The story of Antoine is emblematic of countless enslaved people whose lives and contributions have been overlooked. Antoine, the enslaved gardener of Oak Alley Plantation, was the first person to successfully propagate the pecan tree yet he exists only as a footnote in the bigger story of Oak Alley Plantation. His pioneering work enabled large groves of trees to be planted creating a lucrative commercial crop and though his horticultural achievement has long been legend, virtually nothing is known about his life. Historian Katy Morales Shannon utilizes extensive research and period documents to expose his story and explore the lives of the enslaved community in which he lived." Katy's first book The New Orleans Bee: Dispatches from the first year of Louisiana's longest-running French-language newspaper is available via Kindle on Amazon.com. Her work investigates the enslaved man who first cultivated pecans. This week in Louisiana history. July 17, 1795. Bob Pettit, despite being a little-known name nowadays, had a basketball career absolutely saturated with achievements. He was, for a time, the all-time leading scorer in NBA history; he was the first person to reach 20,000 career points; he is still the third greatest rebounder in NBA history; he won the All-Star game MVP trophy four times; and he won the very first overall MVP trophy the NBA ever gave. The story of this man is not one we should ever forget, and he deserves a spot in the conversation about the greatest power forwards in history. What if you're not toxic but are just surrounded by people who are allergic to your truth? Today's guest is a licensed professional counselor who specializes in assisting young adults (she even references memes in-session, y'all)! Practicing in the Deep South, Monet is a highly visible advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, Black Lives Matter, and sex-positivity despite her cisgender, heterosexual white-womanness in highly conservative Cajun Country. Due to her surroundings, she is often made out to be the one who is disruptive, wrong, or "toxic" due to her passion for these disenfranchised groups. And though Monet has been able to find other like-minded people in her area, it's still difficult for her to shake the judgments of the majority. Listen to this episode if you've internalized the worst of what people have said about you despite them not being shit, themselves. -- Follow Monet here on Instagram: @monetdavidlpc Visit Monet on Facebook by clicking here.
