It's October - which means we are contractually allowed to venture away from classic kaiju and into the realm of human-sized monsters and horror! But we won't stray too far, as we are staying with Toho and the 1963 classic, Matango (aka Attack of the Mushroom People)! This is an in-depth conversation on the genre-bending film based on the 1907 William H. Hodgson short story, The Voice in the Night, and brought to life by a "who's who" of Toho legends - Ishiro Honda, Tomoyuki Tanaka, Eiji Tsuburaya, Hiroshi Koizumi, Akira Kubo, Kumi Mizuno, Yoshio Tsuchiya, and many more! But how did the hallowed horror historian, Jacob Walsh, feel about this foray into early Japanese body horror? Is he even awake yet after his whirlwind trip to New York Comic-Con? Also on the episode, Jake and Jay review their recent sofubi pick-ups that included a nice array of subjects - from the custom cat kaiju, Negora, to the beautiful Shobijin to yet another Titanosaurus for Jay's collection. Fire up the maser cannons, gas up the Moonlight SY-3, and polish your space titanium, because it's time to get a little kaijuontheside with YHS on Monster Island!

Hello, kaiju lovers! An artsy Japanese horror film about mushrooms based on a British short story? That's sounds insane enough to work! Despite getting slapped with the schlocky English title, “Attack of the Mushroom People,” Matango ranks as one of director Ishiro Honda's greatest achievements in tokustasu filmmaking. Screenwriter Takeshi Kimura considered it to be his magnum opus. It's a story replete with subtlety and symbolism, an indictment of Japan's newfound opulence and decadence in the early 1960s, and it's as relevant now for any audience as it was back then. It's such an important film, Nathan and his intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, interview the only scientist on Monster Island's who's brave and/or crazy enough to study the Matango—with frightening results!  Featuring Daniel DiManna as the voice of Dr. Dante Dourif. This week on The Spectator Film Podcast… Attack of the Mushroom People or Matango (1963) 4.12.19 Featuring: Austin, Maxx Commentary begins at 19:12 — Notes — Plant Horror: Approaches to the Monstrous Vegetal in Fiction and Film Edited by Dawn Keetley, Angela Tenga — This is a truly special collection of essays. It’s amusing to think of a serious and insightful critical examination of the “Vegetable Horror” subgenre, but make no mistake: this is one of the most engaging and intelligent essay collections I’ve read on horror recently. I intend to finish reading this book. While this book doesn’t address Matango directly, a lot of what’s discussed still applies. This book is highly recommended to any fans of horror. Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men: The Fantastic Cinema of Ishiro Honda by Peter H. Brothers — While informative on the film’s production and the various actors involved, I found this book’s chapter on Matango to be a bit lacking in substance. Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film, From Godzilla to Kurosawa by Steve Ryfle, Ed Godziszewski — A perfect introduction to Honda’a life and career. This is our recommended resource for learning more about this director. We’ll include some interesting passages from the chapter on Matango below. “The 1950s malaise and the political protests that had begun the 1960s were by now largely forgotten. Upon taking office in 1960, Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda introduced his Income Doubling Plan, spurring rapid economic growth fueled by Western-style consumerism. An emerging middle class now coveted lifestyle items previously beyond reach, such as refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, and washing machines, while more upwardly mobile citizens owned sports cars and expensive luxuries” (197). “‘Around this time, there were people who started to be Americanized, or have a very modern lifestyle,’ recalled Honda. ‘There were rich people who sent their kids to school in foreign cars, that kind of thing. We tried to show that type of social background in this film.’ Honda was inspired by a headline-making story about thrill-seeking rich kids who took their father’s yacht far out to sea and had to be rescued. Early drafts featured characters mirroring the incident, spoiled young sons of the moneyed class” (197).

Miyamoto wanted to create a Popeye game that featured a love triangle between Bluto, Olive Oyl, and Popeye, but Nintendo couldn’t secure the rights. Miyamoto decided to keep the love triangle idea and Donkey was born. One of Donkey Kong’s defining features was that fact that the game had a plot and cutscenes to move that plot. Donkey Kong would kidnap Mr.Video’s Girl and Mr.Video, a carpenter, would have to scale the construction site to rescue his girl. Mr. Video Soon became Jumpman and thanks to an angry land named Mario Segale his final name would be Mario. Fast forward five years 1985 and Mario and his brother Luigi embark on an adventure to save Princess Toadstool. Here’s the story from the instruction manual.    One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom People were turned into mere stones, bricks, and even field horse-hair plants, and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin   The only one who can undo the magic spell on the Mushroom People and return them to their normal selves is the Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is presently in the hands of the great Koopa turtle king.    Mario, the hero of the story (maybe) hears about the Mushroom People’s plight and sets out on a quest to free the Mushroom Princess from the evil Koopa and restore the fallen kingdom of the Mushroom People.    You are Mario!
