Happiness Solved with Sandee Sgarlata. In this episode, Sandee interviews Sonia Lewis. Sonia Lewis has been described as fearless and unflinching; driven by the integrity of hard work; a dreamer and problem solver; and a bully to the bullies with power and influence. Sonia Lewis co-founded ASCRIBE Educational Consulting on February 13, 2009, while sitting in a booth at Stage Coach Restaurant in Sacramento, CA, while having birthday brunch with a friend. They wrote a mission and vision statement on napkins. Sonia channeled how supported she felt at age 7 when she daringly challenged liberty and justice for all. Core to her dream for ASCRIBE was to lean on equity and resources for the most marginalized in community. A former high school Social Studies teacher and Program Director, Sonia took a leap of faith into the world of entrepreneurship. She is a visionary and isn't willing to accept the norm, as the standard we are forced to accept. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge talks to anti-racism impact strategist and the CEO of https://www.ascribesuccess.com/ (Ascribe Educational Consulting), Sonia Lewis. Sonia shares that she has done this work for over ten years – and the last two years have seen quadruple the work for her, understandably.  Diversity, equity, and inclusivity should be a part of each and every organization, no matter how small. Every team member should feel a part of the whole, and Sonia works strategizing and developing how to make an inclusive space for every member of a team. Sonia shares that they facilitate a lot of conversations – and do a lot of listening. Sonia also talks about what doesn't work and they collaborate with these organizations to help develop that team inclusivity. Josh shares his take – we all have blind spots. Sonia shares some ways to educate yourself. Individuals who have worked hard and worked their way up to achieve their goals sometimes don't realize how many others missed out on those opportunities. The United States is a talent-resource rich country. No one is coming to take what you have, which is a primary fear that many groups feel, Sonia shares. That's just not reality – equity comes with having perspective on your own situation.  Equity is about meeting the needs of those who are most marginalized, disenfranchised, and most vulnerable in an organization. More often, those individuals are black, indidgenous, female, LatinX, LGTBQ+, and/or a lower socioeconomic status. Equity means creating opportunities for those in these marginalized groups. The truth is, it will never be an even playing field, and that's what equity is all about.  Josh and Sonia also discuss how they've heard entrepreneurs struggling to hire a diverse team. It's all down to how you treat people and the world around you. Everything you say and do impacts how you're perceived, and if your company culture isn't dialed in, having a truly inclusive and diverse team just isn't possible. Positive messages of inclusion are absolutely essential. Sonia also shares some of her incredible background. She shares that her experiences have helped her to spread the message that children should be seen and heard. Encouraging children to be open about their struggles, especially those in marginalized communities, is critical to fostering a better future generation.  According to her website, Sonia Lewis's debut children's book focuses on encouraging children to trust their voice and adults to do the same. In this episode, I'm joined by an anti-racism specialist and founder of ASCRIBE Educational Consulting, Sonia Lewis, to talk about racism in healthcare.  Inequality in our hospitals Sonia is a trained doula and mom so she knows a lot about childbirth. She shares how many people of color find it challenging to articulate their needs when they seek medical treatment. She recommends people articulate their needs and make sure they document anything that happens during a consultation.  What does a 'just' health system look like? Sonia describes a just health system as one where everyone has access. Equality means it does not matter what your status is, you are treated with the same level of care as everyone else.  She also believes bedside manner is key, if a healthcare professional listens to their patient it creates a far better experience. Being your own advocate and feeling like you have agency are also important components to a fair system.  Don't miss this important conversation about what we can all do to create a fairer system. Sonia shares one of her most challenging situations in a hospital and what she did to demand a good outcome.  Sonia's Link https://www.drlesliek.com/ About The Adulting With ADHD Podcast It's not just you – we aren't talking enough about ADHD and hormones. Episode: Continuous Improvement and Getting to the Root of Belonging with Sonia Lewis Sonia Lewis joins me to delve into what it really takes to get to the roots of belonging and how to improve belonging within an organization.  You'll find Sonia on the frontlines of many social justice movements as she works to change the many systemic, institutional and structural inequities. For over a decade, Sonia has been on a mission to marry equity/humanity work with social justice/cultural shifting of mindsets. At the end of the day, her battle cry is "The Future is Anti-Racist and we all have a part to play." We're talking about the part continuous improvement professionals have to play in anti-racism and improving belonging in the organizations they have a chance to impact. SONIA WILLIAMS LEWIS  Sonia is an experienced Chief Executive Officer with a demonstrated history of working in the professional training & coaching industry. She describes herself as an Anti-Racism impact strategist and her mission is to create a society that values equity and humanity. She works at the intersection of anti-racism work and belonging within organizations.  Sonia wants the fight against racism to take into account present-day realities rather than just rely on history lessons. CONNECT WITH SONIA LEWIS LinkedIn :https://www.linkedin.com/in/sonia-williams-lewis-m-ed-0b166b50/   Website: https://www.ascribesuccess.com/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/soniasaidittho?lang=en          Key topics in this podcast: What is racism and how does it impact Black people overall and specifically within organizations? What is Sonia's advocacy within diversity and equity all about and what has driven her since her childhood? How have the twin pandemics of COVID and racism come together to create urgent problems organizations must solve? Why “belongingness” is vital in organizations and how organizations can improve. What are the ways in which organizations can change to make sure that everyone's voice is being heard? Why mission and vision statements are important foundations for an organization's goal alignment.  How to differentiate between equality and equity?         KEY TAKEAWAYS Racism is ubiquitous but there are multiple ways to improve belongingness in your organization. Leaders must work on equity and belonging within the company – and what we already know about features of lean culture – like respect for people and the need for psychological safety can also be used to improve belonging.  Belongingness helps organizations to improve their bottom line and increase productivity. Equity, belongingness, and humanity are important. Humanity is important and if humanity is important, that means everyone who shows up is important and should be valued. The Continuous improvement professional has a key role and key opportunities to increase belongingness in an organization.   Words of wisdom or Tweet-ables  Sonia Lewis' advice for a young person ‘'Trust your gut… your gut is very intuitive as to who you are and you should trust it.''

Earning degrees in History and Psychology, a Master's degree in Education and teaching for nearly 20 years were all foundational to the mission and vision of ASCRIBE Educational Consulting, LLC and EDIFY Humanity 501c3.   From age 7 to now, at the center of Sonia's motivation is humanity and belonging. She is on a mission to rectify the harm and oppressions of racism....and is unflinching in asking the tough questions, facing uncomfortable truths, and building on equity driven outcomes. Acknowledging that we all have perpetuated norms based on conditionings from a white supremacy lens has divided our collective ability to stand in solidarity and has fostered an oppression Olympics mentality.   In building a future that is anti-racist, humanity must matter, and equity needs to be at the center of the equation. There is no better time than the present to fight for those most marginalized and disenfranchised by a system with the intend to deny access to wealth, life, liberty, and justice. Sonia Lewis joins me on this conversation on race to talk about race, racism, inequity and critical race theory in education. She is a consultant and speaker in diversity, race and education. Key topics: Sonia's decision to not salute American Flag when she was seven Sonia's experience growing up in Richmond, California with a father who was one of the founders of the Black police officer's association Historical background of the US educational system and the perpetuation of systemic racism Why it's essential to be able to talk about race in schools What really is Critical Race Theory How white supremacists are playing on the ignorance and fears of many white people and distorting the definition of critical race theory The history of racism in the US includes racism against, Asians, Latinos, Native Americans and also antisemitism Jim Crow laws that stopped Black people from voting, owning property, getting education and keeping segregation Could some of the pushback against Critical Race Theory be   due to shame that some people feel about how people of  color have been treated? Or is it just hate? Three ways people can help dismantle racism If you like this episode of “Everyday Conversations on Race for Everyday People,” please share it with two other people. Help us disrupt the way people talk about race in order to stop hate, eliminate fear of differences and spread love across the globe. Remember to subscribe to the show. Conversations across race are sometimes hard but always necessary for the health of our organizations.

Relationships Struggle While Competing   By competing, we all strive to gain victory when we step out of that stage. However, the prepping process is not always easy. It’s a difficult plight. While your attention shifts to prepping for the competition, your relationship with family and friends is at risk of going down the drain. As a matter of fact, when you immerse yourself to competing, things are going to change. Relationships will be affected either negatively or positively depending on how well you address the foreseeable change. So, how do you strike a balance between your relationships and competing? I had the pleasure of speaking to Sonia, who’s will share how she lost relationships while competing.  Sonia Lewis is an IFBB Bikini Pro. She was the overall Bikini Winner in the 2018 Arnold Amateur where she turned pro. Dues to her outstanding performance, she has been invited to go to the Arnold in 2019. Her goal is to compete in the Olympia.  In this episode, we’ll dive deep and talk about relationships: how we've lost relationships in the past and how things change when we're deep into competition prepping. Sonia talks how she has absolutely no balance when she's in prep, as well as her love life.  Additionally, she will share on how relationships with her friends and her family are just so stinking hard to manage.  I’m sure you struggle with this too. So let’s go!    Takeaways Always stay ready so you don't have to get ready Talk to your family and friend about what competing takes Find a balance between competing and your relationships  Even if you have stretch marks, you can still compete Just like it takes time to build your muscles, it takes time for your skin to tighten up  Be confident with yourself  The more shows you do, the more comfortable you get on stage Compete with yourself, don't compete with other people Competing definitely teaches you great practices of health Do thorough research on your coaches, you just can’t trust everyone     Important Questions [00:06:46] How many years have you been competing? [00:07:33] What is your favorite quote that keeps you going? [00:10:12] What exactly keeps you motivated? [00:12:36] How did you start your bikini journey? [00:23:24] Can you quickly explain the Arnold to everyone just in case they don't know what it is? [00:26:09] How exactly were you able to balance being in this negative energy, having a child, and going into this competition?  [00:27:50] What exactly gets left behind when you start competing? [00:29:43] How did the relationship with your child change? [00:31:40] Do you ever regret growing out of some of the old relationships that you had? [00:37:09] What's your remedy for stretch marks? [00:42:10] If you could change anything about the sport, what exactly do you think you would change? [00:48:53] What exactly would you tell someone who's struggling through their first competition? [00:50:56] What do you think has been your biggest struggle?
