KOSMIC! Novelist, comics writer, and historian Stuart Moore joins the podcast to discuss his new book for the Marvel Age of Comics critical series from Bloomsbury and Marvel, Doctor Strange: A Decade of Dark Magic. As the title promises, Moore's book looks at the first ten years of the character - from its start as a supporting feature in Strange Tales from artist Steve Ditko and writer Stan Lee through multiple reimaginings and adjustments in the hands of writers and artists like Roy Thomas, Gene Colan, and Steve Englehart. In this discussion with bookseller Justin Remer, Moore talks about the dialogue Doctor Strange created with the '60s counterculture, the tumultuous publishing history of the title, and his own prior interactions with the late Ditko and Lee. We welcome back Stuart Moore to discuss his new Marvel Age of Comics book, Doctor Strange: A Decade of Dark Magic. Stuart explores Doctor Strange's first ten years from his 1963 debut through the early '70s, examining how the Steve Ditko/Stan Lee stories' trippy, philosophical approach influenced 1960s counterculture, and how that counterculture in turn shaped the minds of later creators like Steve Englehart and Frank Brunner. We dive into his research on the East Village location of the Sanctum Sanctorum, the succession of writers and artists including Roy Thomas, Gene Colan, Gardner F. After winning the Eisner Award for Best Editor in 1996, while at Vertigo, Stuart was wooed to Marvel Knights, where he edited many titles for the bestselling imprint. Eventually, he moved into writing, including comics like Firestorm, Wolverine: Noir, JSA Classified, Batman: Siege, The 99, and Namor: The First Mutant as well as prose novels based on Marvel's Civil War and Dark Phoenix Saga and Valiant's X-O Manowar and Shadowman. More recently, Stuart's written a series of Marvel's Crisis Protocol novels and the middle-grade series The Zodiac Legacy.
