Summer Holidays!Lenten Hymns are my main preoccupation at the moment. I have a special bunch of Masses around the feast of the Annunciation this year.Turns out there are quite a few arrangements of Audi Benigne Conditor on CPDL.org, some of them for 3 parts and designed to alternate with the chant. I love this hymn. It's one I didn't know back when I assembled A New Book of Old Hymns.Back to the Little Office, January is still Christmas time or Office 3. The feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, now known as the Presentation of Jesus, 2nd February is the last day for Office 3. The beginning of the changeover to Office 1 comes at the end of Compline. Instead of finishing with the Christmas antiphon Alma Redemptoris, you change to the next antiphon, Ave Regina Caelorum. Then the next hour, Matins, is Office 1.I often describe Ave Regina Caelorum as the Lenten antiphon, though that isn't strictly accurate. Purification to Sacred Triduum is a better description, but it's a bit more wordy. So this change doesn't catapult us into Lent or even Septuagesima. Septuagesima Sunday falls on 16 February this year, so your last Alleluias happen at None of Saturday 15 February. From Vespers Saturday 15 February, use the “Laus tibi Domine” options. With regard to my own Little Office PDFs and reprints, a keen reader found that I had left out the third collect for Compline, so that has been remedied. The up to date PDFs are always at https://littleoffice.brandt.id.au/#bookletsSomeone else noticed that a shop description of my truncated Benziger Brothers Little Office had a misleading description. It is a bit confusing. I have four variations of the Benziger 1915 Little Office:* The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary - 257 pages, paperback - lulu or shop.jubil.us* Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary with Office of the Dead - 433 pages, paperback - lulu or shop.jubil.us* Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 1915 - 257 pages, hardcover - lulu or shop.jubil.us* The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 1915, blue hardback - 257 pages, hardcover - lulu or shop.jubil.usSo only one of the four gives you the complete book with the extra commemorations and the Office of the Dead. The other three have been shortened to just the Little Office and they share a listing on Shop Jubilus - there's a drop down menu there to select which one you're after. As the school year resumes here in Australia, I have a new list of projects to work on:* a course on singing Roman Compline according to the 1962 rubrics* a video (or two) going through the rubrics section of the Benziger 1915 Little Office book* an explanation of how to sing PsalmsThese are responses to queries from kind readers like you. I live in a lovely bubble where I can go to the Latin Mass on Sundays and sometimes even on weekdays. My family sings Compline together most evenings. I've learned so much about chant over the past two decades, often volunteering for things way over my head - you don't know what you don't know. When you ask questions, it helps me reflect on my assumptions and track down the reasons for how I sing. It's still frustrating that a conventional Catholic education completely overlooks these aspects of the treasures of Catholic music. But again, you don't know what you don't know. It's by learning and passing on this information that one day maybe a good majority of Catholics will be able to sing together confidently, transcending boundaries of age and language with timeless repertoire. It will take a while for our Catholic education systems to catch on.So, I hope this message finds you well. Let's pray for each other that we may accomplish our goals in 2025!God bless. Welcome to part 7 of Gyles reading from the diaries he has kept since he was 10. Gyles is now 14, and a pupil at Bedales, a progressive Hampshire boarding school populated by many CND-supporting teachers and the children of liberal-minded, artistic parents. In this episode we hear about Gyles's summer holidays, spent on his own in Paris, learning French and staying in a boarding house. We hear about his success in the school production. We hear about his teachers - many of whom are "very CND" and some of whom are, shock horror, vegetarian. We hear Gyles's review of the best bits of 1962 and about the records he's enjoyed listening to that year. If you've only just discovered these episodes, you can either start here, or go back to episode 1 of the diaries and start at the beginning (when Gyles was at prep school). Enjoy this. Trenčín, a charming city in Western Slovakia, is gearing up to become the European Capital of Culture in 2026. However, planners have identified a significant gap in participation among residents of different generations. To bridge this divide and ensure that every voice is represented, the 2026 team launched an innovative initiative called Generácie spolu (Generations Together). RSI visited Trenčín on the final day of this weeklong project to engage with its participants. In the second half of the show we help you plan your summer holiday with two reports on visiting Slovakia's vast natural landscapes. First, we speak with Matej about his website snptrail.com, a place where English speakers can find vital information on Slovakia's only thru-hiking trail. Then we speak with Iveta Buraľová, Poloniny National Park's environmental education officer, to uncover the treasures of this unique natural paradise.
Exciting news: it's time for the next instalment of Gyles's schoolboy diaries. In this episode, the young GB goes on his holidays, to Germany and then, unaccompanied, to Paris. We also hear about his attempts to smuggle a copy of Lady Chatterley's Lover into his boarding school. P.S Harriet got a bit of ahead of herself and released this on a Monday instead of a Tuesday by mistake! Enjoy it a day early, your special Rosebud bonus. Learn more about your ad choices. Our MGM 1948 Studios Year by Year episode is a Freed Unit double feature: the great Irving Berlin musical Easter Parade, starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire, and Summer Holiday, a Mickey Rooney coming-of-age story based on a play by Eugene O'Neill, directed by studio-era "art director" Rouben Mamoulian. We discuss Easter Parade as a vehicle for presenting Judy Garland's "problematic" anti-star star persona and Summer Holiday's envelope-pushing leftist politics and middle-class sexual repression plot, wrapped up in cozy turn-of-the-century nostalgia. In the beginning of June we decided to make our summer premium episodes free for everyone for the whole summer and try monetize our podcast with ads. Now that the summer's almost over we have decided to make a few changes to how we release new content. 1. First of all, all premium episodes will still be released for free on all podcast platforms. However, a month after their initial release, they will be removed from the free feed and added to our paid episode archive which will be available on our Patreon page. For example, an episode released on the 1st of September will be removed from the feed on the 1st of October, etc. 2. After they're removed from the free feed, those of you who decide that they want to continue having access to our premium episodes (old and new) or have some extra materials to prepare for IELTS can sign up to our Patreon page and binge-listen to all the episodes that we've released since 2020 without any interruptions from ads. 3. These changes will allow US to have a more sustainable revenue stream and at the same time will allow YOU to continue listening to all our premium episodes for free ❤️ We think it's a win-win

Summer 1992 didn't yield much in the way of Stock and Waterman productions. But in August that year, there was a sudden rush of releases, kicked off by a curious novelty record: a remake of "Summer Holiday" by Fat Slags, characters from Viz. Former PWL engineer Pete Day helps us get to the bottom of who exactly performed on the track. Meanwhile, Kylie Minogue got one step closer to departing the Hit Factory with new single "What Kind Of Fool (Heard All That Before)", which was included on her Greatest Hits album. Mike Stock and Terry Blamey tell us about the song, which sounded like classic SAW. Speaking of classics, Nancy Davis had another shot at success with a cover version of Jackie Wilson's "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher". And the new-look Bananarama returned to work with Mike and Pete Waterman on "Movin' On", their first single as just the duo of Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward.
