The school year is in full swing and although we are thrilled that students across the country and the globe are back in person, there is undoubtedly a lot of trepidation as educational and principal leaders navigate this difficult time. Not only are there ongoing, daily issues that we wrestle with because of Covid19, school leaders are simultaneously acclimating students and staff back to schools when much has changed. We are not the same as we were when Covid19 struck and the pandemic took hold. Here at TheSchoolHouse302, we would like to think the educational community has grown. These months have revealed our resolve and our willingness to go to great lengths to reach and teach our students. We also recognize that in order for us to continue to grow and build a network of support, we need to fully immerse ourselves in social and emotional learning (SEL). The great news is that SEL is not new. The challenge, though, is making sure that it is integrated seamlessly within our school cultures and not a stand alone. To do so, we created The SEL Blend to remind educators of the balance that must exist between the curriculum and the care side of our work. . The SEL Blend highlights four primary areas that are linked to SEL priorities and behaviors. For example, as much as we focus on our curriculum and adopt accelerated learning best practices, we need to be sure that they are coupled with care and kindness. The Blend serves as a nice reminder about how we can weave SEL into our daily practices. But, we cannot be satisfied with just having this knowledge. The critical step is in making sure that what we are doing is having an impact. As John Hattie always says, “know thy impact.” To that end, we've created 6 ways to ensure that you're building the SEL culture that your students and staff need. In this episode, we break down the key areas that stuck out to us and why. Listen to the podcast to hear more about our 6 surefire strategies to develop a thriving SEL culture. Assemble a Core Team Improve Self-Awareness Complete Certificate-Based Courses Use a Table for Lesson Organization Connect to Other Meaningful Work Tap into Established Systems T.J. further discussed the great work from Loreah Martinez and her Heart In Mind blog and book is an incredible resource. Our goal is to connect you to people and resources, outside of our own, to learn to lead better and grow faster. With this in mind, Joe tackled the benefits and sophistication of earning a credential or certificate. This is a powerful way to develop a train-the-trainer model. Key Thoughts from Our Interview with LaVonna Roth LaVonna discussed how the pandemic didn't come with a manual and how we should be careful with the language we use, such as lost year, lost learning. “We need to take a step back and understand what just happened over the last year and a half. We need to survive to thrive, and we need space to transition.” Don't miss the key strategies she provides for when students return. This reminded us of Dan Sullivan's book, Who Not How. LaVonna clearly establishes who should be at the table. Lavonna talked about how educators need to have age appropriate conversations. Check out her free SEL resources. LaVonna uses a structured way to look at situations, and she asks very specific questions: “What was the lesson, benefit, or takeaway?” LaVonna talks about psychological sciences and cognitive psychology. She points to books from ASCD. We also recommend taking a look at Make It Stick, Powerful Teaching, and a company called TeachFX. Don't miss LaVonna's personal hacks for self-care. Become aware of your thoughts. Check out, also, a great book on this topic, Chatter, by Ethan Kross. LaVonna wants to slow down a bit...listen to what she says about it. It reminded us of Essentialism. LaVonna combines learning with self-care to continue to grow as a leader. You'll want to hear this. “Pivot, essential, shift, social distancing, testing, herd immunity.” These are all buzz words we are sick of hearing, but the fact is we have to learn how to live in the digital word. If you have been to a Reach Live event, most likely one of your favorite parts of the event was the Speak Off. We like to say it’s like the “American Idol” of speaking. The energy is high, the crowd is buzzing and ten speakers fight their butterflies as they go head-to-head with only five minutes to speak to prove they are the best.  Earlier this year, when we decided to have a digital-only event, Advance 360i, we had to reimagine the way we did the Speak Off. How could we bring that same energy to a digital stage? Thanks to the AYR dream team, SAGE Events, and countless other people, we did it.  In today’s episode, Blair interviews Liza Millan, Susie Beaty, Kera Wasserbach, Lea Woodford, Dolores Hirschmann, and LaVonna Roth, who were just some of the incredible judges that determined this year's winner. Before they judged the Speak Off, they joined us in our private Facebook Group to give us the best practices and tips you need to know to learn how to bridge the gap between a pre-covid and post-covid world, what works, what doesn’t work, and how to show up powerfully on every digital stage as a speaker in 2020. In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast, I had the pleasure and honor to interview Dr. Louisa Moats. She pioneered the science of reading and is the leading authority on the planet on how to teach students to read. It was not only my honor and pleasure to interview her, I was able to connect Louisa with three of our educators, Stephanie Kieffer, Amy Quillen, Morgan Siefke, and our primary principal, Kendra VanDoren, to learn about Louisa's work and how we can improve literacy at our district. Our teachers got to ask Louisa questions! Our teachers and principal are part of the interview. Amazing. Dr. Moats has been a teacher, psychologist, researcher, graduate school faculty member, and author of many influential scientific journal articles, books, and policy papers on the topics of reading, spelling, language, and teacher preparation. After a first job as a neuropsychology technician, she became a teacher of students with learning and reading difficulties, earning her Master's degree at Peabody College of Vanderbilt. Later, after realizing how little she understood about teaching reading, she earned a doctorate in Reading and Human Development from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Dr. Moats spent the next fifteen years in private practice as a licensed psychologist in Vermont, specializing in evaluation and consultation with individuals of all ages and walks of life who experienced reading, writing, and language difficulties. At that time, she trained psychology interns in the Dartmouth Medical School Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Moats spent one year as resident expert for the California Reading Initiative; four years as site director of the NICHD Early Interventions Project in Washington, DC; and ten years as research advisor and consultant with Sopris Learning, obtaining two Small Business Innovation Research grants from the NICHD. Dr. Moats is most well known for her research and writing about the need for improvements in teacher education. Her more recent publications have focused on helping teachers understand the language basis for reading and writing. They include LETRS Professional Development (Voyager Sopris), LANGUAGE! Live blended literacy intervention (Voyager Sopris), and Speech to Print: Language Essentials for Teachers (Brookes Publishing), as well as a series of articles and books for the International Dyslexia Association. LaVonna shares her message of Ignite Your S.H.I.N.E. and it will seriously make a difference in how you teach and how your students learn.  She breaks down the Acronym of SHINE for us and so much more. This is a great interview. LaVonna Roth is the lead illuminator, creator and founder of Ignite Your S.H.I.N.E.®  Self. Heart. Inspire. Navigate. Exceptional. These words capture the path that LaVonna Roth uses to challenge others in discovering how to ignite the S.H.I.N.E. in their students, others and self.  LaVonna will push your thinking and personal reflection to challenge you to grow personally and professionally. Her mission is to help individuals discover who they are, what they can become, and to build self-motivation to see how far they can go. She will passionately stretch the status quo in education and invite you to join her so “shifts happen”. One way to be involved is through social media, using #igniteyourSHINE. LaVonna has a deep passion in using brain research as a fundamental foundation to help students, educators, parents, and the community to honor and value each other so we unite and become unstoppable in what can be achieved. By using these fundamentals, she identifies how to reframe adversities and use those moments to become the exceptional person you really are. This enlightenment will occur throughout but be brought to light as she shares parts of her own personal story. LaVonna Roth is passionate, driven, successful, and accomplished. Yet, following what has become a theme among the women I've interviewed, she's human and thus, is challenged at times by her own self-doubt. As the founder of S.H. I. N. E. (an acronym for Service, Heart, Inspire, Navigate, and Exceptional), LaVonna engages teachers and students in “funshops” where they work to reflect on their passions and make plans to accomplish work motivated by the same. LaVonna refers to the dynamic educators with whom she works as Edustars (Educational Rockstars) and works to help inspire teachers while also advocating for teacher self-care — which together leads to exceptional educators. Sitting down to interview LaVonna, I could hear the passion she speaks to in her voice. Lavonna and I covered a series of topics.  Some of the highlights include: (1:11) Our responsibility and obligation as teachers and leaders to put students first and think about what's best for kids when making decisions. (3:58) Facing the challenge of self-doubt and understanding that limiting beliefs only do us a disservice in the long run. (7:00) The need to take a step back and ground yourself in your “WHY” when facing challenges or entering into challenging conversations. (16:45) The need to surround yourself with supporters so you can take risks, knowing that people will be there to support and encourage you no matter the outcome. (20:00) Having a friend who is willing to tell you the truth, even if the truth hurts or is painful to hear. Listening to LaVonna, there is a sense of urgency in her voice. An urgency to listen to the narratives of students, an urgency for teachers to become inspired by being engaged with their most passionate interests, and an urgency to overcome self-limiting internal dialogue to rise above the challenges we face. It's also clear that LaVonna speaks from personal experiences as she acknowledges that we're all just trying to find our own path — herself included. As you listen to LaVonna, think about your path ahead and what actionable steps you can take to further your own passions. Once you reflect, reach out to someone from your support group to engage in a conversation about your plans.

How do you change things when change is hard? First, you should read Switch, by Chip and Dan Heath ... Or if you're strapped for time, listen to my Mini-Monday episode that focuses on this topic. According to the Heath Bros change centers on 3 elements: Rider (logic) Elephant (emotion) Path (necessary steps for change) Leaders need to be aware of each of these 3 elements to effectively instill change in their organization. Make sure you listen to the entire episode for a few anecdotes and examples of what you can do in your school or district to more effectively be a change agent.
