Carlos Texeira es un profesor brasilero y director de un programa de doctorado en el Instituto de diseño en Chicago, EEUU. Dr. Cannas presented a Real Science Lecture webinar on October 17, 2023, titled “Diets of Productive Sheep & Goats: Performance & Health.” You can find the webinar recording at balchem.com/realscience.  Dr. Cannas outlines the topics he covered in his webinar, including nutritional requirement differences between small and large ruminants, particularly in late gestation. Small ruminants have a shorter gestation and are more prolific than cattle, for example, and this means they have more nutritional challenges in late gestation. Dr. Cannas covered supplementation, basal diet quality, and sorting ewes or does by number of fetuses. He also discussed how high milk-producing sheep and goats partition nutrients. (10:36)Many people treat sheep and goats like smaller, low-producing cattle. Dr. Cannas considers this approach a big mistake. During pregnancy and lactation, sheep and goats are highly-producing animals that garner the same attention given to high-producing dairy and beef cattle. Dr. Texeira agrees and reminds the audience that just because sheep and goats are very adaptable animals doesn't mean you should feed them low-quality diets. Jessica mentions that providing poor-quality feed may not allow the ewe or doe to meet her genetic potential. (21:51)The panel discusses the importance of record keeping and data to evaluate management changes. (27:31)Jessica asks about how Antonello fed rumen-protected choline in his experiments. They fed individually to ensure each animal received the correct dose but recommended to mix it into a TMR or mineral supplement for on-farm feeding. (33:12)Izabelle asks how many groups most farms sort ewes or does into before lambing or kidding in Sardinia. Antonello says it depends on the individual farm because they are so diverse, but at least two groups, singles and twins. They may also sort based on the number of days pregnant as well. He describes some experimental results from feeding rumen-protected choline to ewes carrying singles versus twins. (35:35)Dr. Teixeira describes some of the challenges sheep and goat producers face in her native Brazil due to heat stress. Jessica gives examples of management strategies to help manage heat stress based on her work at Cornell. (41:14)The panel discussed challenges with body condition scoring goats using a sheep scale since goats store more fat internally or in other locations like the tail. They also discuss recommendations for target body condition scores at different stages of the production cycle. (48:00)In summary, Jessica recommends that sheep and goat producers focus on what they do well, make small changes to improve their operation, and collect data to see what is working and what is not working. Izabelle encourages producers to understand what is happening physiologically in each stage of production to best manage nutritional challenges. Antonello reiterates that sheep and goats should be given the same attention and care as high-producing dairy cows. It is a complex business and there is much room for improvement in the management of small ruminants. In 2008, Allan Schoenborn killed his three children, a crime for which he was judged to be NCR or Not Criminally Responsible because of mental health issues. Since then Schoenborn has been held at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam, B.C. The hearing was attempted in April of this year but proceedings devolved into chaos. The hearing will resume this coming week and what should we expect? AND: Not Criminally Responsible. Allan Schoenborn, who killed all three of his children, Kaitlyn 10, Max 8 and Corden 5 years of age 16 years ago, was declared 'not criminally responsible' because of mental illness and has been held the last 14 years at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam, British Columbia. Schoenborn's first hearing before the'annual' review board in two years this week descended into chaos, including seeing his lawyer walking out of proceedings. Schoenborn has also changed his name and wants a publication ban on his new name placed into effect. Meanwhile, according Dave Texeira, family friend and representative for the children, Schoenborn remains violent, but with already granted 28 days unescorted passes into the community. What's next? Justice issues in Canada: The Supreme Court of Canada has refused to hear the appeal from Calgary mass killer Matthew de Grood who killed five fellow U of Calgary students at a 2014 house party. De Grood declared NCR (not criminally responsible) because of mental health issues. - As well the scheduled for this Tuesday hearing for another NCR killer, Allan Schoeborn, found delusional after having stabbed and smothered his 10 year old daughter and 8 and 5 year old sons to death has been postponed to possibly April or May. Break 1: GCPS   STORY 1: Thirty-seven Cars Were Broken Into at Gwinnett Schools Tuesday. Here's What We Know. Gwinnett County Public Schools Police are investigating a series of car break-ins at Archer High School, Trip Elementary School, and Brookwood Elementary School. A total of 37 cars were unlawfully entered or broken into within an hour and a half. The incidents involved theft of personal items, including electronics, driver's licenses, credit cards, and purses. The police are reviewing security camera footage and collaborating with local and state law enforcement agencies to determine any patterns. Although the thieves encountered various levels of vehicle security, the police emphasize the importance of securing valuables, locking car doors, and reporting suspicious activity. The investigation is ongoing. Chief Tony Lockard urges reporting at 770-513-6715 or via the GCPS Tips app. STORY 2: Gwinnett Commissioners Urge Legislators To Reconsider Mulberry Cityhood Proposal Gwinnett County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution urging state legislators to carefully consider the implications of creating the proposed city of Mulberry in the northeastern part of the county. State Rep. Chuck Efstration introduced legislation for a referendum on Mulberry's incorporation, responding to concerns about a 700-unit apartment development. County officials emphasize the current service delivery model's efficiency and comprehensive nature. The commissioners argue that Mulberry's structure, relying on Gwinnett for services like police and fire protection, may negatively impact the proposed city, the existing 16 cities, and Gwinnett as a whole. A fact sheet outlining concerns has been sent to Gwinnett legislators.   STORY 3: Premature birth can affect children's development in later life: study A new 13-year study, following over a million births, reveals that children born moderately (32-33 weeks) or late preterm (34-36 weeks) face higher long-term risks of neurodevelopmental difficulties. These difficulties include conditions like epilepsy, autism, ADHD, and cerebral palsy. The study emphasizes that children born in these windows constitute 80% of all preterm births, and the risks should not be underestimated. The research, published in The BMJ, examined 1,281,690 children born in Sweden between 1998 and 2012, concluding that compared to full-term births, those born moderately or late preterm showed higher risks for various neurodevelopmental impairments.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Kanekoa Texeira, a former G-Braves pitcher, will manage the Gwinnett Stripers, joined by pitching coaches Kevin McAvoy and Mike McCarthy, hitting coach Dan DeMent, and coach Wigberto Nevarez. Texeira, the eighth Gwinnett manager, has prior coaching experience and managed High-A Rome and Double-A Mississippi. McAvoy, returning to Gwinnett, served as the Stripers' interim pitching coach in 2022. McCarthy joins from the Oakland Athletics as the bullpen coach. DeMent, with 15 years in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, becomes the hitting coach, and Nevarez continues as coach for Gwinnett. The staff also includes strength and conditioning coach Tyler Enns and athletic trainers Greg Harrel and Joel Wiggins. Gwinnett Stripers' Opening Night is on April 2 against Louisville. STORY 5: Georgia Begins Work on Sanford Stadium Hedges The University of Georgia's football team is revitalizing the iconic hedges around Sanford Stadium, known as "Between the Hedges," a tradition since the stadium's dedication in 1929. The current hedges, installed during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, are reaching the end of their typical lifespan. The university has been growing replacement hedges, and the Athletic Association will start proactive revitalization work in February. This project involves full soil replacement, irrigation, drainage work, and replanting with the same lineage of hedges that have been part of the Georgia sidelines for 95 years. The revitalization is set to be completed by the 2024 G-Day Game.   We'll be back in a moment.   Break 3: INGLES 2   STORY 6: Atlanta Falcons Announce Raheem Morris as Head Coach The Atlanta Falcons have appointed Raheem Morris as their new head coach. Morris, who spent the last three seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, takes over as the 19th head coach in Falcons history. In addition, Terry Fontenot will continue as the general manager, reporting directly to team owner Arthur M. Blank on football matters. Rich McKay remains the CEO of AMB Sports and Entertainment but will no longer be involved in day-to-day football operations. Morris brings 26 years of NFL experience and recently helped the Rams secure a Super Bowl title. His tenure officially begins as the head coach for the 2024 season. STORY 7: Kenneth Eugene Smith executed by nitrogen gas in Alabama for 1988 murder-for-hire scheme Kenneth Eugene Smith was executed in Alabama for the 1988 murder-for-hire of Elizabeth Sennett, marking the first-ever use of nitrogen gas for execution. The process began at 7:56 p.m., and Smith was pronounced dead at 8:25 p.m. He made a final statement through a mask, expressing love and peace. Smith's execution was initially halted in November 2022 due to a failed lethal injection attempt. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected appeals arguing that the nitrogen gas method violated the Eighth Amendment.
