With Donald Trump winning the presidency, the popular vote, the Senate, and the House, in what The New York Times has described as a “crushing electoral rebuke” of the Democrats, there is a lot of soul-searching going on in the party. Our guest on the program today tried to warn the Democrats in his previous book. He says the progressive moment in American politics is now over — and the Democrats are going to have to face that fact if they want to win again.Ruy Teixeira is a cofounder and politics editor of The Liberal Patriot newsletter on Substack and a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. His latest book, with John B. Judis, is Where Have All the Democrats Gone? The Soul of the Party in the Age of Extremes. Throughout the election, we heard one warning, repeated ad infinitum: A Donald Trump victory would precipitate a fascist dictatorship, and the United States would soon resemble Nazi Germany.  But Democrats didn't take up arms to defend the ramparts of democracy. They didn't repel Trump's storm troopers who descended on Washington. Instead, something more. . . traditional happened. President Joe Biden welcomed Donald Trump to the White House, congratulated him, and promised a “smooth transition.” (A courtesy, we should note, that Trump did not extend to Biden in 2020.) But now that Democrats have lost power—both in the White House and Congress—what changes should they make to regain it?  Here to answer that question today are Freddie deBoer and Ruy Teixeira. Freddie is a writer, self-described Marxist, and longtime critic of “social justice” identity politics. Ruy is a political demographer, Democratic strategist, and co-author of the book, Where Have all the Democrats Gone?   We talk about how Democrats became the party of elites, whether Kamala Harris's loss is the death knell of identity politics, why abortion wasn't enough to save the Democrats, and whether the party will learn any significant lessons from this historic defeat.  Learn more about your ad choices. Over two decades ago, Ruy Teixeira predicted that America was on its way to a bright blue future, thanks to an inevitable demographic shift that would deliver the Party a dominant, durable political coalition. “Demography is destiny” became the mantra of the Democratic Party—proven out by Obama's decisive 2008 electoral college win. But then, in 2016, Trump upended that coalition, and, consequently, anti-Trumpism naturally became a defining feature of the Democratic Party. But—beyond its opposition to Trump—what does the Democratic Party stand for today? With the Republican Party infected with extremism and so embarrassingly unable to govern, why aren't Democrats winning sustainable majorities? And why is the Democratic party still losing ground with some of the core parts of its base? President Donald Trump made gains among nearly every single demographic group in his historic victory, particularly with Hispanic and young voters. As the Democratic Party asks itself how it lost to Trump – a man they cast as a dictatorial threat to Democracy itself – it will have to look inward and realize it has moved from being the “party of the kitchen table” to the “party of the faculty lounge.” Working middle-class voters don't identify with a party that spends more time criticizing anyone who disagrees with them as bigoted than working to make peoples' lives better. Will Democratic leaders learn from their mistakes and move to the center on cultural issues? Or will the Democrats continue to pander to their progressive base? Ruy Teixeira is a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where he focuses on the transformation of party coalitions and the future of American electoral politics. Before joining AEI, he was a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress. The Democratic Party has been hemorrhaging nonwhite and working-class voters. There are a lot of theories about why that has been happening, blaming it on the party's ideas or messaging or campaign tactics. But I think the problem might be deeper than that — rooted in the structure of the Democratic Party itself.Michael Lind is a columnist at Tablet magazine, a co-founder of New America and the author of “The New Class War: Saving Democracy From the Managerial Elite.” He argues that the Democratic Party in recent years has become more beholden to special-interest nonprofits, which claim to represent large constituencies but actually reflect the interests of the donor class. In this conversation, we discuss why he thinks the nonprofit complex became so powerful, how that might have led to a disconnect between the Democratic Party and its core voter base and what he thinks Democrats could do to course correct.Book Recommendations:Where Have All the Democrats Gone? by John B. Not only has Harris been less popular than Biden throughout his presidency, but she's entering the general election with a dismal electoral track record and will be forced to defend the current administration's unpopular policies. Teixeira, currently a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, worked from 2003 to 2022 as a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning public policy research and advocacy organization.Teixeira explains that Democrats were not always proponents of the open-border agenda. The Democratic party used to see illegal immigration as a threat to low-wage workers and unions. In fact, in the 1980s, organized labor was the main group pushing for more hawkish immigration policies.Teixeira stresses the importance of including the people at the center of the American electorate in policy debates, stating that the Democratic leadership is way off where the public is not. Many issues have become “culturalized” and reflect the agenda of what he calls a “shadow party” that includes activist groups, donors, academics, et al. who view issues, especially immigration, through a good-versus-evil lens, which does not foster productive debate or compromise.Today, he said, Democrats refuse to even acknowledge a problem at our southern border and have generally alienated the working class, which once made up a significant part of their base. Additionally, they often categorize their opponents as evil rather than merely mistaken. Teixeira sums up the view of the Democratic “shadow party” on immigration as “more is better and less is racist.”In his closing commentary, Mark Krikorian shares what he saw on a recent trip to the Del Rio and Eagle Pass areas of Texas, which has been “Ground Zero” for the border crisis. However, almost overnight the illegal immigration flow has virtually stopped in this area, thanks to a Mexican army crackdown on illegal migrants that followed December visits to Mexico by President Biden and other senior officials.HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestRuy Teixeira is a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.RelatedRuy Teixeira AEI profileCould Immigration Hand the 2024 Election to Trump?Where Have All the Democrats Gone?: The Soul of the Party in the Age of ExtremesHow Biden Could Act on the Border and Help Himself in NovemberFollowFollow Parsing Immigration Policy on Ricochet, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts.Intro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. Political analysts used to say that the Democratic Party was riding a demographic wave that would lead to an era of dominance. But that “coalition of the ascendant” never quite jelled. The party did benefit from a rise in nonwhite voters and college-educated professionals, but it has also shed voters without a college degree. All this has made the Democrats' political math a lot more precarious. And it also poses a kind of spiritual problem for Democrats who see themselves as the party of the working class.Ruy Teixeira is one of the loudest voices calling on the Democratic Party to focus on winning these voters back. He's a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and the politics editor of the newsletter The Liberal Patriot. His 2002 book, “The Emerging Democratic Majority,” written with John B. Judis, was seen as prophetic after Barack Obama won in 2008 with the coalition he'd predicted. But he also warned in that book that Democrats needed to stop hemorrhaging white working-class voters for this majority to hold. And now Teixeira and Judis have a new book, “Where Have All the Democrats Gone?: The Soul of the Party in the Age of Extremes.”In this conversation, I talk to Teixeira about how he defines the working class; the economic, social and cultural forces that he thinks have driven these voters from the Democratic Party; whether Joe Biden's industrial and pro-worker policies could win some of these voters back, or if economic policies could reverse this trend at all; and how to think through the trade-offs of pursuing bold progressive policies that could push working-class voters even further away.Mentioned:“‘Compensate the Losers?' Ruy Teixeira is a political scientist, the co-founder and politics editor of The Liberal Patriot, and the author, with John Judis, of The Emerging Democratic Majority and, most recently, Where Have All the Democrats Gone?: The Soul of the Party in the Age of Extremes.  In this week's conversation, Yascha Mounk and Ruy Teixeira discuss how Democrats lost the working class and what it might take to win it back; how Teixeira's theory that demographic change would favor the Democratic Party has been misinterpreted; and why Democrats, despite Trump's unpopularity, have failed to open up a decisive lead in the polls. Distinguished political analyst John Judis returns to The Commonwealth Club to share his wake-up call for Democrats, who he feels have lost sight of their core principles, endangering their own political future. For decades, American politics has been plagued by a breakdown between the Democratic and Republican parties, in which victory has inevitably led to defeat and vice versa. Judis says both parties have lost sight of the people at the center of the American electorate, leading to polarization and paralysis. In their book Where Have All the Democrats Gone? The Soul of the Party in the Age of Extremes, Judis and co-author Ruy Teixeira reveal the tectonic changes shaping the country's current political landscape that many pundits and political scientists have missed. Judis says that the Democratic Party, once the preserve of small towns as well as big cities, of the industrial working class and the newly immigrated, has abandoned and even actively alienated many of those voters. He issues a clarion call for common sense and common ground, revealing the transformation of American politics and providing his critique of where the Democrats have gone awry and how they can avoid political disaster in the days and years ahead. In 2002, Ruy Teixeira co-authored The Emerging Democratic Majority. Now, two decades later, his new book is out – Where Have All the Democrats Gone? So what happened to the Democratic Party in those intervening years? A couple of major factors stand out. First, the Democrats have bled working-class voters – once the party's base. This means that your average Democrat today is not a UAW union worker, but probably a middle to upper-class post-grad student at Harvard. Or Colombia. Or U Penn. Second, the party's mission has been captured by extreme versions of wokeism, making progressivism synonymous with total agreement with the far Left. And while the Dems' recent winning streak is attributable to the specific alchemy of special and off-year elections – in 2024, it will be a much bigger challenge to see how coastal elites and college grads sustain the party.Ruy Teixeira is a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he focuses on the transformation of party coalitions and the future of American electoral politics. Before joining AEI, he was a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress from 2003 to 2022. He coedits “The Liberal Patriot” blog. His new book is Where Have All the Democrats Gone? In the past few decades, the Democratic Party has undergone a seismic shift. Kitchen table issues like the economy and public safety have been overshadowed by more elitist topics like identity politics, gender ideology, defunding the police, climate change, and the vaguely defined yet rigidly enforced ideology of anti-racism, which sees white supremacy as the force behind every institution in America. But while activists, lobbyists, and pundits were busy reshaping the Democratic Party, ordinary voters—including the working class, middle-class families, and ethnic minorities—were simply leaving. All of which has stranded a large group of Americans on an island, voters in the center of nowhere. Two people who have spent years thinking about how the Democratic Party lost its vision are our guests today, political analysts Ruy Teixeira and John Judis. Their new book, Where Have All the Democrats Gone?, offers up a map to help us understand how liberals lost their way. On today's episode, guest-hosted by Michael Moynihan, Teixeira and Judis trace the influence of big money forces behind what they call the Democrats' “shadow party,” and offer a path forward away from the radical cultural issues embraced by party elites and back to core economic issues that matter to the working class, a group that Democrats need to win back if they want to win in 2024. Twenty years ago, the Democratic Party seemed poised to dominate American politics. But having alienated many of their traditional working class voters, that dominance didn't come to pass—and the party could be on the precipice of a political disaster. To understand how we got here, Jonah invites Ruy Teixeira—senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and author of The Liberal Patriot on Substack—back on The Remnant for some white hot wonkery on the shifting demographics of America's major parties. In his new book, Where Have All the Democrats Gone? Ruy explores the Democratic Party's evolution and what it should do to get back on track. Why did the working class turn on the Democrats in the first place? What will it take for the party to embrace a more moderate policy platform? And why is everyone so determined to make the perfect the enemy of the good? In their new book, an essential guide to the trends that roil the Democratic Party and threaten its national standing, the authors forthrightly acknowledge that they had underestimated “the defection of the white working class” from party ranks. Our conversation focuses on a core reason for this defection: the rise of a “shadow party” of elite donors, activist groups and media voices that is alienating the white working-class vote with an unbending, culturally-left posture on hot-button matters like race, immigration, climate change and sex and gender. This self-appointed “vanguard” possesses a quasi-religious mindset of a neo-Puritan stamp—an outlook that many Democratic voters, and not only in the white working class, reject. On this episode of the Free Expression Podcast, political scientist Ruy Teixeira and co-author of a new book, "Where Have All the Democrats Gone?" tells Wall Street Journal editor at large Gerry Baker that the Democrats have lost touch with their core voters over economic and cultural issues, how some Democratic activists' support for Palestinian terrorists underscores their extremism and how the party risks forfeiting the votes of many of its former supporters to the Republicans.  Learn more about your ad choices. This week's podcast interview (audio above) is with Ruy Teixeira, about his new book with John Judis, Where Have All the Democrats Gone?: The Soul of the Party in the Age of Extremes. It is an argument that both parties have been co-opted by big business. It spends all its time blaming the Democrats for their part in this, but that's because the authors believe the Democrats used to be the party of the working person, and that it can and should be again. They also view the Republican party, or at least large swaths of it, as a threat to democracy. They are interested in Democrats winning elections, and winning elections is an issue of math. And they believe, based on quite a bit of statistical evidence and history, that the Democratic party has alienated key elements of the country that they need to win elections, both by losing touch with working class people on economics, and on social issues.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

American politics are evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans. But our guest argues that it doesn't have to be this way. He tells fellow Democrats: "Given the problems the Republicans have, why aren't you beating the hell out of these people?"Political scientist and author Ruy Teixeira says that recent election results have been a lost opportunity as the left pursued identity politics instead of focusing on class. While more white college-educated voters have abandoned the Republicans in the past decade, Democrats have lost ground among white and hispanic working class voters. "That's a fundamental question that Democrats should be confronting, but don't," he tells us.Ruy Teixeira is among America's best-known political thinkers. He's a senior fellow at The American Enterprise Institute, where he writes and does research about changing party coalitions and the future of electoral politics. He calls himself a social democrat. He is co-author with John Judis of "The Emerging American Majority" that was published two decades ago. The highly influential book argued that Democrats would gain a lasting advantage in twenty-first century America. But the party has not made significant gains. Their next book, out this fall, is called "Where Have the All Democrats Gone?: The Soul Of The Party In The Age of Extremes".In this episode we hear about a wake-up call for Democrats. Teixieira argues for a return to policies of growth, prosperity and economic abundance that enabled the left to dominate American politics in much of the second half of the last century. Recommendation: Richard has read James Wilson's critically acclaimed and profoundly moving book "The Earth Shall Weep: A History of Native America." Hosted on Acast. Live from the Heart of America—I'm Steve Gruber—ready to deliver an inclusive and diverse discussion on the most important topics of the day—giving you better analysis and insight that anyone else—shining a spotlight on the cockroaches of the swamp—and delivering truth and justice just when hope was starting to fade—   Here are the 3 Big Things you need to know to start today—   Number One— In California—several communities in the San Bernadino mountains have been cut off by massive snowfalls—in some areas—8 feet of new snow in just one week!   Number Two— The supporters of forgiving billions in student debt are demanding the Supreme Court do their bidding and if not there will be hell to pay—   Number Three— Dear Democrats—where have you gone? I mean it—where have the real Democrats gone?   Ivey and I spent time in Arlington National Cemetery—and if you have never stood there and looked around—it is something as an American it is something you must do—   You read the names of the famous— and the names of those from West Virginia, New York, New Mexico and every other corner of our nation you have never heard of—that served with distinction to protect our God given inalienable rights—that we still enjoy today—but are also threatened more than ever—   We stood at the eternal flame burning at the tomb of John F Kennedy—and I reflected on who we were as a nation in 1963—and who we are today—   When JFK delivered his inaugural address—we were staring down the barrel of the Soviet Unions growing nuclear arsenal—Cuba was hostile and antagonistic just 90 miles south of Florida—the Berlin Wall divided the Capitol of the German people—half in the west and the other half under the iron fist of Nikita Kruchev and the communists—   Democrats didn't call America names and accuse her people of being victims and oppressors—we knew exactly who we were no matter which side of the aisle we stood on—we were Americans—proud Americans—willing to fight and die for this nation—black and white—rich or poor, from all backgrounds and all walks of life—   JFK pointed out—how few in human history had the God given opportunity to fight for the freedom of all men—and all women—and the honor of doing so was quite special—   Hearing that is truly remarkable—I mean honestly I can barely remember when the Democrats were villainizing someone or some group of people while screaming racism—or some other cheap smear job—   There was a time when they could still tell the difference between men and women—and more importantly there was a time when they could still tell the difference between right and wrong—   Sadly today—those on the left have turned victimhood into an industry to harvest hundreds of millions—and sometimes billions of dollars— and harvest votes with taxpayers' money at the same time—   Its all about power and control—and it appears more often the destruction of freedom— The Freedom of speech—the right to keep and bear arms—the right to think whatever you want to think and to worship freely—all of these foundational principals are now in jeopardy—   That is not the world JFK was looking at as he addressed the crowd on cold clear January 20th 1961—he was looking at the awesome responsibility he had been given—and in fact all Americans had been given by those that had gone before us—many who were then and are now interred in Arlington National Cemetery—the 35th President could not conceive that he would join them in our nation's most sacred ground less than 3 years later—   But he certainly knew the dangers we faced from a hostile communist nation—   Once again, America is facing a hostile communist nation—BUT this time, regardless of what we are fed each day—our most dangerous enemy is not Russia and it is not the war in Ukraine—it is without a doubt the Chicomms in Beijing—BUT this challenge is not unique today—nor was it in 1961—the players may change but the game is very much the same—    At Arlington National Cemetery—just a few steps from the eternal flame that burns over the grave of JFK and his family—are inscriptions from his inaugural address—but none that seem so profound today—as the one in the middle—    So I ask you Democrats—where is that Democrat Party today? Have you gotten so lost in pronouns, political correctness and being woke that you have simply lost your way— that you have simply forgotten or worse ignored the truth about American exceptionalism—    Today Democrats don't ask what they can do for their country—instead they demand of their neighbors fealty to their religions of climate change and racism—they don't ask but rather demand that they be paid for the color of their skin—or for the college education they voluntarily received—they demand that we kneel at the foot of their beliefs and abandon our own—they demand that we renounce America as an awful, unfair and cruel place—   When nothing could be further from the truth—   So I ask my fellow Americans that call themselves Democrats—where have you gone—but more importantly why?   What would John Fitzgerald Kennedy say to you today—if he saw what had become of his once proud party—and what they are saying about his beloved country—

Democrats are certainly showing their lunatic side, what with all the protests in the streets about Roe v. Wade, and the verbal assaults on the Supreme Court justices, and the storming to justices' homes in Maryland and Virginia, and the storming into Catholic churches in certain spots of the United States, and all. But why are they so lunatic? The leaked draft ruling doesn't do anything to Roe v. Wade but hand it to the states to decide. And in many states, legislators are busily working right now to guarantee that abortion stays free and unfettered for women. Other states, of course, are doing the opposite -- clamping abortion, restricting abortion, setting their sights on doing away with abortion altogether. And that's why the left is up in arms: they can't stand the idea of America taking a law and order and constitutional approach to abortion -- they want it to stay the privacy issue it was ruled, and they don't want the accountability and transparency that a duly legislative process would bring. Legal experts Victoria Toensing and Joe DiGenova have quite a few things to say about the matter.
