It took nearly six years for bestselling author Daniel Handler to sell his first book, a satirical novel called The Basic Eight. When his agent sold it in 1998, it was “for the least amount she had ever negotiated for,” laughed Handler, who spoke at a UC Berkeley event earlier this month. More than two decades later, Handler has published seven novels. Under his pen name Lemony Snicket, he has written dozens of books for children, including the 13-volume series A Series of Unfortunate Events. His most recent book, And Then? And Then? What else?, is part memoir, part inspiration for aspiring writers. Handler was the keynote speaker at the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life's inaugural Jewish Arts and Bookfest, a day of events held on May 4 in celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month. Throughout the day, artists and authors came together for panel discussions, workshops and other programming that showcased the Jewish experience through art, culture and storytelling. In episode 226 of Berkeley Talks, Handler, joined in conversation by J. The Jewish News of Northern California's editor-in-chief Chanan Tigay, discusses how his Jewish identity shapes his worldview and storytelling, where the name “Lemony Snicket” came from and how a great mentor taught him to read work by authors he admired in order to hone his craft.“When you suggest that we create our own canon, you don't necessarily mean a list of books that are the most significant to us,” Tigay said to Handler at the event, “but actually, the moments in books, turns of phrase and plot twists that are, in some ways, significant. “And I'm wondering if you could take us through a bit of your own canon, in that regard, the moments and turns of phrase and plot twists in books, specific books that have been most impactful to you as a writer?”“For writers, I try to encourage them to seek out what they're enthused by,” Handler replied. “ … So instead of saying, ‘Gosh darn it, Toni Morrison is sure a great writer,' that you think, ‘What is it about Beloved that I return to, that I think about all the time?' … Then, you can go back and find that scene, and look at it, and study it for what it is that you're trying to do, what you're trying to take from it."Handler went on to describe how a scene from the 1958 film Vertigo, when an important character named Midge leaves halfway through the story, inspired the structure of his second novel."My second novel Watch Your Mouth has two parts," he said. "I remember thinking, 'I want ... to have that feeling of like, OK, some things are gone. What in the world can happen in the second half of this story?' That was exciting to me, and I lifted that from that scene in Vertigo. No one in a million years would think that, there's nothing in the novel that reflects that plot or anything like that, but that was what it did for me." Pam Conner, city manager of the City of Powder Springs, joins host Carol Morgan for this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. In this podcast segment, Conner discusses methods for developing one of Atlanta's fastest-growing cities. Events + Gatherings Events and gatherings are a driving force for city growth, according to Conner. The City of Powder Springs works diligently with residents to host diverse events that represent its larger population. The city plans yearly holiday celebrations, including Independence Day fireworks, Veteran's Day celebrations, chili cook-offs, and Hispanic Heritage Month activities in October. Other community events include the Brown Bag concert series, 5K running events, Bookfest, health and wellness workshops and meet-and-greets with local law enforcement. Listening to Residents Listening to residents' concerns and suggestions is another essential element of city planning. Whether it is a dog park or better roads, it is crucial for city planners to give residents a platform to voice their concerns. It is even more important to put those ideas into action. “We are also developing and planning to develop more parking and transportation improvements,” said Conner. “The city's a small city, and its geography is what it is. There are opportunities for some intersection improvements to help move people along, and, you know, the folks who do live here have valid comments and concerns about the traffic.” Adding Rooftops How does a city like Powder Springs grow its population? The City has added multifamily and townhome developments and strives to boost its population during the day. This means businesses and attractions invite residents to engage throughout the day through dining, recreation, shopping and more! Conner notes that walkability is especially attractive to new and younger residents. Situated on the edge of Thurman Springs Park Square, a new multifamily development is nearly complete with 220 units. These homes put residents within walking distance of city events, with some that include balconies overlooking the square. A second housing development is underway about two blocks from the downtown area. “I think that with all the apartments downtown and the multifamily, you're going to see that a lot of people work from home and that's going to boost the population during the day too,” said Conner. “Because you can work from home two or three days a week, run out and grab your coffee, or run out and grab your lunch and you can walk there.” Tune in to the full interview above to learn more about the City of Powder Springs or visit www.CityOfPowderSprings.org. About the City of Powder Springs Located in southwest Cobb County, Powder Springs boasts a small-town atmosphere complemented by booming developments in housing, community engagement and recreation. What does city growth look like for Powder Springs? Recently, the City of Powder Springs recreated its City Center, once known as the “heart and soul of the community” during the city's beginnings. Other recent additions to Powder Springs include Thurman Springs Park, a town square area with an amphitheater and splash pad, Powder Springs Park and its renovated City Hall. “Grand ideas are grand, but they don't help you if they just stay on paper or on the shelf,” said Conner. “So, the city worked really hard with the Downtown Development Authority to make those changes downtown, and you can start to see that revitalization with more people down at the events that we have.” The Silver Comet Trail, a paved rail trail running from Smyrna, Georgia, to Alabama, passes through Powder Springs and is a recreational staple for residents. The Linear Park trailhead provides access from Powder Springs, forming connections across Cobb County. Powder Springs is also home to the Seven Springs Museum, full of rich local history. A special thank you to Denim Marketing for sponsoring Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio.

Teatime with Miss Liz on June 11th, 3 pm EST, Bringing you all an important message on the Elephant Matriarch Project and her book “Terriers in the Jungle” The best-selling author and Co-Founder George Umano Meet My Guest: Georja Umano is an animal activist who has organized, spoken and written about animals and animal causes in the US, Italy and Kenya, especially in the fields of elephant and wildlife conservation. She is also a film, TV and theatre actress, stand-up comedian, teacher and journalist. She has earned a B.A. in English Literature at LeMoyne College and an M.A. in Educational Theatre at New York University. Her acting career started in New York, and she always leaned toward comedy. She appeared on all the episodes of a sitcom with Ed Asner, “Off the Rack,” played the title character in an award-winning short film, “The Godmother,” and was nominated for awards for her theatrical performance in “Kaballah” with Avery Shriver. She has performed stand-up comedy in Los Angeles, San Diego, and ten other states. Things changed when she got a dog, and she quickly became an avid animal advocate and feature journalist. She produced and starred in a cable show/web series with her dog, “The Georja and Marcello Show.” Soon afterward, she got involved with elephants. She went to Africa six times. The last time she decided to move there was when she brought her two rescue dogs and her husband, author Gerald Everett Jones. In her new novel, TERRIERS IN THE JUNGLE, she wrote about many of their adventures, including her plans to create “The Elephant Matriarch School” in Kenya. The novel is narrated by her dogs! As a young woman, Georja experienced a vivid past-life regression in which she was a young child whose mother was killed by an elephant hunter, and she was raised by elephants. While staying in Kenya, she realized that she was an elephant in that past life. Now, she knows many elephants in Kenya, has adopted many orphaned elephants, and has hugged many of them. TERRIERS IN THE JUNGLE won First Prize in Animal Fiction at The BookFest 2022. Many people say this book should become a movie, and Georja is working on that project now.Georjaumano.comElephantMatriarach.org#teatimewithmissliz #misslizteatime #makingadifferencetogether #animalactivist#elephants#kenya #actress #awardwinning #author #joinus #livestreaming #podcastshow #likefollowshare

Ways Humans Can Write Better, in the Era of Artificial Intelligence This episode is a follow-up to the one where we discussed how AI—or artificial intelligence—is affecting the writing and reading community. That first episode came out just a few months ago, eons ago in terms of this technology. Yet there is something very timeless about the act of writing that we believe will never be surpassed by machines, and that is indeed the very important topic we'll dive into deeper today: ways humans can write better. The book beautifully chronicles their private moments of tenderness, as we reconcile ourselves to the fragility of childhood innocence, and the reminder that control is an illusion. In their struggle, the Texeira family discovered the most essential ingredients in surviving great hardship—their unwavering faith, gratitude for every day, and the strength and power found within every family member. In this episode of Hilary Topper on Air, Hilary interviews Steven Joseph, author of the new book, Snoodles, Kidoodles, Poodles and Lots and Lots of Noodles. Hear from Steven as he talks about his book and how adults and kids alike should embrace crankiness to achieve goals. In addition, learn about Steven's own journey as a marathon runner and what motivates him to continue to push himself and cross those finish lines as well as how he gets his writing ideas while running. About Steven Joseph Steven Joseph is a first-generation American, son of a Holocaust Survivor, speaker, and 5-time Boston Marathon and 17-time NYC Marathon runner. He is a humorist who likes to marry therapists in his spare time and has spent nearly a lifetime going back and forth between schuckling at the synagogues, and sitting in stillness staring at the blank wall in the Zendo. Steven Joseph is a BookFest award winner and a Mom's Choice award winner. His first book, the award-winning children's book The Last Surviving Dinosaur: The TyrantoCrankaTsuris, was the start of his crankiness journey. His second book, The Crankatsuris Method: A Grownup Guide to Effective Crankiness, also an award-winner, helped adults around the world embrace their crankiness. Now, his third book, Snoodles, Kidoodles, Poodles and Lots and Lots of Noodles seeks to inspire kids, parents, educators, and everyone still feeling a little cranky with humor, insights, and of course plenty of those all-too-necessary noodles. About Snoodles, Kidoodles, Poodles and Lots and Lots of Noodles Steven Joseph is back with a new book for kids and adults to help them laugh a little while embracing crankiness. We are all naturally cranky and the pandemic has made us even more cranky than normal. But with a sense of humor and the delightful metaphors found in his new book, Snoodles, Kidoodles, Poodles and Lots and Lots of Noodles, Steven gives us all a new perspective on embracing our crankiness. As an attorney and negotiator, Steven knows a thing or two about shifting one's point of view to see things anew. Snoodles, Kidoodles, Poodles and Lots and Lots of Noodles casts fresh light on how we handle everything from mask-wearing to distance learning, to the climate and environment. Book festivals are the highlights of the year for book lovers around the world. In Los Angeles there is the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, which is the largest book fest in the country. It often draws more than 150,000 book lovers, book industry professionals, organizations, journalists, businesses, speakers and thought leaders. There is also the annual Beach Bound Book Bash, of which Books That Make You helps present each year. It is an annual literary tea that features authors reading from their books as well as snacks, prizes and other festivities. Unfortunately, that even isn’t happening in 2020, which would have been the 5th annual BBBB. In New York there is BookExpo and BookCon which draw thousands of fans and literary professionals. Across the United States, as well as around the world, ComicCons, pop culture conventions, writers conferences and other expos and fairs that feature books are either cancelled or postponed because of Covid-19 and social distancing rules. There is a solution for people who crave this bookish community. For those who want to come together in unity, there is an option. The LA BookFest is that event. On Saturday May 9th the event will live stream and feature panel discussions, conversations with authors, publishing industry experts, thought-leaders, activists, creatives, journalists and more. Plus, there will be author AMAs, videos of authors reading from their books, a huge bookish giveaway presented by Books That Make You, a music-infused after party, and of course, lots and lots of books. The guests in this episode join host Desireé Duffy to talk about the LA BookFest. KJ Matthews is an award-winning media and entertainment journalist and regular contributor to BBC News, DW News, and previously was with Extra News and CNN for more than a decade. She is also the founder of Traveler Confidential--an eco-luxury website for travelers. Deborah Kobylt is an award-winning journalist as well. She is best known for her work on CNN, Fox11 LA, KCAL9 News, Turner Entertainment and her successful podcast Deborah Kobylt Live and president of Kobylt Media. KJ and Deborah have joined forces to bring together a panel of journalists for the LA BookFest. It is about Integrity in Journalism during the Covid-19 crisis and beyond. Find out more on LABookFest.com and check out this and other exciting panels.
In this episode we interview Stephanie Scott, author of Tokyo-set crime novel What's Left of Me is Yours, we chat about books featuring long walks, put John Lennon on trial, and chat to Alex Hawley, blogger and one of the organisers of an online bookfest.
Are puțin peste 20 de ani.
This week’s podcast was recorded at BookFest Windsor 2019. Today, we’ll talk with Ben O’Neil and Jessica Bromley Bartram. Illustrator, artist, and screenwriter Ben O’Neil is currently based in Toronto, but was born and raised in London. He counts Matt Groening (The Simpsons) and Greg Capullo (Spawn) among his influences. It wasn’t until Ben attended OCAD for Curatorial Practice and Art Criticism that he rediscovered comic illustration. From there, Ben began self-publishing comics and zines. He also works as a freelance illustrator. His book, Apologetica is described as a sign of the times, a letter of regret, a feeble attempt, a collection of comics dealing with guilt, shame, martyrdom, jaguars, bad meat and fashion.Jessica Bromley Bartram is an illustrator, and graphic designer who lives in Ottawa. Her collection of illustrated short stories, Ghost Water Kiss, published in 2019 by Popnoir Editions. She has illustrated two picture books for Fitzhenry & Whiteside, Charles, published in 2018, and Summer North Coming. She has a BA in English and History from the University of Guelph (2003-2007) and a second Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from the Ontario College of Art & Design (2010-2015), where she won the Graphic Design Medal for her final thesis project at the 2015 Graduate Exhibition. Both authors are with POPNOIR EDITIONS, a publisher of graphic novels based in Toronto. Together, they led an awesome workshop on Graphic Storytelling, and then they stopped by to talk about their own personal work. http://popnoir.ca/https://www.benoneil.com/http://jessicabartram.ca/about/

Before she became a household name for her internationally acclaimed illustration work, Mary Engelbreit was a typical young adult finding a way to make a living in St. Louis. In her late teens and early 20s, she worked at a local art store and an ad agency — and then landed a job as an editorial artist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. But she was let go during her probation period, as she tells host Sarah Fenske in this episode, after she challenged the fact that men were paid much more than women. Leaving the daily newspaper gave her the time to develop greeting cards, and from there, what would become a wildly popular company bearing her name. Throughout her career, her lifelong love for drawing has remained central. She continues to call St. Louis home, and she talks about her journey and her craft ahead of her appearance at this weekend's BookFest in the Central West End.
We are broadcasting from Radio Kingston on a new FM signal and its HOT HOT HOT! Please have patience with this episode as it may have some crackle, ok ... Today we have a quick conversation with Martha Frankel about the Woodstock Bookfest. She talks about why she writes, the importance of stories and books and all the goodness of this weekend's festivities! Our 3 guests today are Shawna Dunworth of Duo Bistro, Erica Brown of Kingston Landtrust, and Ani Kaiser of Birch Body Care . We talk about the recent upstate lifestyle branding on social media, specifically city based social media influencers blogging and instagramming about our neighborhoods, and we ask the question "is it exclusionary and classist" or is it what our struggling economy needs? From the outsiders perspective it looks as though they're capitalizing on the ‘lifestyle' in ways that are possibly not ethical and verging on classism and racism. Harsh words, but we want to talk about this! Self Care time! Talking safe spaces, mental health and hugging trees. Today's show was engineered by Manuel Blas of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org. We heard music from Shana Falana, http://www.shanafalana.com/, audio from an interview with Glennon Doyle, and Martha Frankel. We were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves at a promotional event for In Pieces, the Sally Field autobiography, but escaped with our lives from the white-women fury that somehow erupted at a book festival in St. Louis.

Kris Kleindienst need only glance out toward the entrance to her bookstore at the corner of Euclid and McPherson avenues for some solid reminders of St. Louis’ literary legacy. The busts of four canonical writers adorn the intersection. But she's just as enthusiastic about St. Louis’ contemporary writing community as she is about the region’s historical claims to writerly fame.
Ryan M. Place is the creator and chairman of the Detroit Bookfest. This festival of books is a huge event on July 15, dedicated to everything bookish with a major focus on used and rare books. We ask Ryan about the Motor City's book culture, John King's epic bookstore and how the festival began.
LARB Radio's Kate Wolf, Medaya Ocher, Eric Newman spoke with authors Joyce Carol Oates, Morgan Parker, and Fiona Maazel at this year's LA Times Bookfest held recently on the USC campus. Morgan Parker is the author of There are More Beautiful Things than Beyonce. Fiona Maazel's latest novel is A Little More Human. Joyce Carol Oates remains one of the leading figures in contemporary American letters, a status she has held for many decades. All three reflect on their writing processes, on contemporary literature and culture, as well as our troubled political times.
On June 3rd from noon to 2pm Eagle Harbor Book Company will host its 3rd annual Seattle7Writers Summer Bookfest. This year 20% of bookfest sales will be donated to the Bainbridge Schools Foundation. In this 10-minute podcast, Suzanne Selfors, Bainbridge Island bestselling author of many beloved children's books, and Mairead Shutt, Executive Director of the Bainbridge Schools Foundation talk with BCB host, Channie Peters about this year's bookfest. It's a terrific pairing: with their common missions to cultivate a love of reading in students, Eagle Harbor bookstore's choice to benefit the Bainbridge Schools Foundation with this year's Seattle7 earnings is a perfect fit for all. Seattle7Writers (www.seattle7writers.org/) is a nonprofit collective of Pacific Northwest authors whose mission is to foster and support a passion for the written word in our community and everywhere. Authors participating in the June 3rd bookfest include Bruce Barcott, Dave Boling, Terry Brooks, Megan Chance, Claire Dederer, Kevin Emerson, Waverly Fitzgerald, Laurie Frankel, Brent Hartinger, Linda Johns, David Lasky, Donna Miscolta, Boyd Morrison, Suzanne Selfors, Garth Stein, Susan Wiggs, and David B. Williams. In previous years proceeds from the Bookfest have gone to the Bainbridge Island Library and to establish a library at the Boys and Girls Club. This year proceeds will go to the Bainbridge Schools Foundation (bainbridgeschoolsfoundation.com/), which provides three critical areas of support to Bainbridge Island Schools: supporting teachers (e.g., professional development & training, classroom grants); academic support in reading and math, Achieve program & homework clubs; and Innovation through STEM initiatives, edible education in partnership with EduCulture, Circle of Friends for students with disabilities, and high school arts and lecture series. Best of all, the entire community will enjoy meeting and talking with the authors -- so come on down! Get to know some of these terrific authors, enjoy the edible treats provided by the bookstore, and know that you're supporting the Bainbridge schools! Clearly this is a win-win! Special guest Kayla Cagan joins us as we review 1968's He's Your Dog, Charlie Brown, in which Snoopy is an irredeemable sociopath with little to no consequences. Don't believe us? See for yourself! Topics of discussion include: a nesting doll full of bad decisions; what NOT to do when your dog is setting sink fires & kicking people in the taint; the first appearance of Roy (the light of Molly's life); Peppermint Patty's unflinching certainty that Snoopy is not a dog, but a human boy with a big nose; the problem of holding Snoopy accountable for his gratuitous and violent outbursts when he lives as both dog and person, and can therefore not be strictly held to either set of social mores; a round of expressed glands, on the house! This week's guest Kayla Cagan is on Twitter as @KaylaCagan. Kayla can currently be found running social media for the LA Festival Of Books (April 9-10), at @LATimesFOB and #Bookfest. Her novel Piper Parish will be available from Chronicle Books in the spring of 2017. Questions? Comments? Dump them into our asking box. He's Your Dog, Charlie Brown is available for your home viewing on DVD, iTunes, and YouTube. This episode was reblandished in May 2017 by Ken Plume - asitecalledfred.com/kenplume
