W/C 8th July 2024Of the random things I have done this week I put together a 'kind-of-britpop' mixtape on Spotify, mainly for Josh actually, and I have been enjoying some guitar-drenched nineties bangers as I have been sat behind my screen. Totally independently of that I mentioned Thea Gilmore on this week's Corona Diaries podcast and when I realised I had put Cast on my playlist, I happened to say out loud that I thought Thea's version was my go-to.So I have put links below for both, so you can have your say. And of course I hope JB gets to walkaway with the dignity that befits his service.Stay safe.Walkaway - Thea GilmoreWalkaway - CastTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. W/C 16th January 2022There is a (welcome) return to rantiness this week, and it probably doesn't take a genius to work out what has got my dander up.I happened to listen to the The Counterweight this week, which is a really great Thea Gilmore album from 2017. The War is the final track of the album proper and begins as a lyric in response to the senseless killing of Labour MP Jo Cox, a few miles down the road from where I am sat.It talks to culture war, and social media and the preoccupation we have to sow division in the quest for power. And do you know what I fall for it every time, because as I rant away and scream into the void I am doing exactly what they want.I need to look up, and be better. We all do.'in a time of hate, throw down the counterweighttear up that flag and say, you're worthy of more'Stay safe. The War - Thea GilmoreTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. New year, new requester! As suggested by a first-time requester, we listen to two songs off of an intriguing album by a new-to-us artist. "Listen the Snow is Falling" makes its third apperance on the show, this time as hauntingly performed by Thea Gilmore. Then we shoot the shit with Gilmore's "That'll Be Christmas", which is, you know, pretty good! The ranking music in this episode is "Christmas Unicorn" by Sufjan Stevens. “Kiss Off, Kiss Off” The Virginia -born Erin McKeown is best categorized as un-categorizable.Whether she's playing guitar with the Mountain Goats, tearing through big band music in a tailored suit or writing an off-Broadway musical, McKeown pretty much does it all. A graduate of Brown, McKeown, over the course of her over 20 year career, has put out almost 15 solo albums, toured with Andrew Bird, Thea Gilmore, Josh Ritter and the Indigo Girls, played Bonnaroo and Glastonbury, had her music appear in commercials and TV shows, was a resident artist at Providence, RI's revolutionary community arts organization AS220 and she was the 2011-2012 fellow at Harvard's Berkman Klein Center For Internet & Society. Yes, she's busy. The recipient of a 2016 writing fellowship from The Studios of Key West and a 2018 residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. McKeown is currently a 2020-21 Professor of the Practice at Brown University. Her new album KISS OFF KISS OFF is a raw blast of nervy rock and roll that's got street smart grooves and real poetic grit. It's fast and catchy and it swerves with all the lippy snarl of early Joan Jett. In this chat, McKewon talks to Alex about sports, creativity, self-preservation and why she won't answer emails after 6pm. www.erinmckeown.com www.bombshellradion.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Are you familiar with the phrase ‘pretty privilege'? A new trend on Tik Tok is seeing young women sharing stories about when they first realised good looks can get you far in life. From relationships, to work, and even within the legal system – the association between beauty and talent, social success and health is a real thing. Anita Rani talks about the issue with model Marike Wessels, and Caterina Gentili from the Centre for Appearance Research. A new report investigating the serious harm or death of babies is calling for midwives, health visitors and social workers to provide more support to fathers. The Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel has looked at the lives of 23 babies who were known or suspected to have been seriously harmed or killed by their father, step-father or male carer, with the aim to understand what led the perpetrators to do it, and what could be done to prevent similar incidents. Panel member Mark Gurrey and working NHS midwife in Scotland, Leah Hazard discuss the issues. Rebecca Currie has won a High Court battle to limit the stench coming from a landfill site near her home which she says was damaging her son's health. We hear about her campaign and her reaction to the victory And there'll be music from Thea Gilmore who talks about her new album Afterlight Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Lisa Jenkinson Studio Engineer: Duncan Hannant

Written, produced and performed by Afterlight, the album spans the brutal truth of the opening track – an account of all the damage wrought upon one small life – through the slow, painful realisation that her entire world was built on control and lies, on to the emergence of a woman learning for the first time who she really is, making new connections and, finally, finding her own voice.Afterlight, the album, by Afterlight is available via afterlightsings.com on 1st October.Presented by Stephanie MerrittProduced by Jasper Waller-Bridge for Mighty Village LimitedEdited by Gareth IlesRecorded at Spiritland Studios, LondonSupport the Show.

Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan

Kathryn Williams, singer-songwriter, laughs like the flowers as she talks about Dylan as inspiration and Cat Stevens as her secret crush. Outsiders and identity are themes; she listened to Janis Joplin every morning to get through school. Kath confesses to some ”wild” teenage years: listening for hours to tapes of Dylan in a Liverpool pub car park. Lay Lady Lay was “a wakening into the adult world”, her “massive daily song: saucy and sexy”. Her songwriting is illuminated: “how to make truth ring”. Kathryn Williams has released 14 studio albums. She has written and arranged for a multitude of artists and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize for her second album, Little Black Numbers. She has collaborated with artists including John Martyn, Chris Difford, Thea Gilmore, Ed Harcourt and The Magic Numbers.
