Los Angeles (L. A. ) is renown as a City of sunlight, a place of gorgeous topography from the mountains to the desert to the Pacific ocean. And yet, Writers for the last hundred years have been attracted to finding out what is lurking in the shadows of L. A. Daniel Weizmann in his second mystery novel, follows in that long tradition of what is called, “crime noir”, with an added bonus. The Author is a native of this sprawling global locale who is gifted with a curiosity and a keen sense of observation taking the reader to corners of diverse neighborhoods that he can write about with special detail. He introduces us to an amazing variety of characters from a couple living in a trailer park to some low life types who have come to own a mansion, to an Attorney who hides away living on a boat docked in the Marina at the mouth of the ocean. The story is set in Los Angeles in 2024, and in the mid- 1980s, full of the rock and roll music scene at that time, which Weizmann covered back then as a Music Reviewer. At the very opening of the book, we meet Adam Zantz, the hero of the story, and we learn about the mystery of a long ago crime that he must solve. As a Private Investigator (P. I. ) in training he has the passion for his assignment which is also fueled by complicated family relationships. It all brings color to this beautifully written tale of suspense and surprise. Once you finish CINNAMON GIRL you will know Los Angeles in its true mosaic, a magnet for all people of the world with dreams for a better life underneath all that sunshine. TO PURCHASE: Penguin Random House and Amazon - The Author is available via zoom to speak at Book Groups.

Neil Young's second solo album, 1969's Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, marked the first time he made an album with Crazy Horse as his backing band. Created in a rush of musical output from Young, concurrent with his work with Crosby, Stills, and Nash, it set the stage for the type of sound Young wanted to make as a solo artist: stripped back, without any fancy studio-created bells and whistles. Three of the songs on that album were written while Young had a fever from the flu, and one of them, “Cinnamon Girl,” led to Young earning the nickname “The Godfather of Grunge” decades later when bands like Nirvana embraced the the innovative way he downtuned his guitar. Johnny Cash's “Hurt“. Soft Cell's “Tainted Love“. Jimi Hendrix‘ “All Along The Watchtower“. But also Travis‘ “Baby One More Time“. Type-O-Negative's “Cinnamon Girl“. Clem Snide's ”Beautiful” Or even worse, The Calling's ”London Calling”. U2's ”Fortunate Son”. Limp Bizkit's ”Faith”. Yes, I know that you know – all of these are cover versions. Of course you, as the title to this special already implies. Today we want to have a look at cover versions and what makes them good or when do they turn sour? There is also a cause for us to do so, the release of a really great EP by some friends of ours. Årabrot from Scandinavia, whose Heart-EP is out today. We have a lot of goodies, so just move along and enjoy! When we heard about Kjetil and Karin doing an EP full of cover versions it manifested right before our eyes - 'We gotta do a bit more than just a review, we gotta dissect the art of cover versions!' Well, of course the ONE question always connected to cover versions is a simple and simultaneously most difficult one – what is a good cover version? Must it be a complete homage not changing too much, like Peter Gabriel did it with The Magnetic Fields' classic ”The Book Of Love” or the Faith No More cover of ”Easy” (which only differs in that remarkable ”uuurrghhhhhhhnnn” moaner Patton gives at 1:54)? If covering artists want to show their respect for a song which, in their opinion, is perfect – then this way is the way. Listen to Nirvana's version of the Bowie-classic ”The Man who Sold the World” and you can hear that the only thing they changed is the tuning more or less. Nevertheless, the track gains a completely unknown quality when performed by Kurt Cobain who at that point already had suicidal tendencies. And to make it clear, even if a band like In Flames covers Genesis' ”Land of Confusion” there is not that much of a change, in my opinion, only because they riff it out much harder, speed it up one notch and switch the vocals into Melo-Death-mode. It's basically the same structure just in a different notion. A good cover, even if it is not a real change to the song; however, converting a song's genre is not always easy, because the novelty factor only goes such a long way.

Several years ago, I wrote a time-travel film treatment called “Song Trippers” about a quartet of lonely, damaged people who found solace through music. Each lost soul connects to a song that transports them back in time to the place in their youth when they were the happiest. Of course, we all know that music has magic power. There are songs that can trip my memory far from the here and now to earlier states of joyful wonderment, and sadness, too, if that's what's called for. It's strong medicine. For each episode in this series, I'll take an 8 Track down from the shelf and share it with you, along with some special memories, bonded by that spiritual epoxy that has forged the framework of my life's scaffold. -Bill "Captain Billy" MesnikFROM THE DIG THIS ARCHIVES- THE VERY FIRST EPISODE OF CAPTAIN BILLY'S MAGIC 8 BALL! -AFTER THE GOLD RUSH, by Neil Young, (Reprise, 1970)This allusive, abstract ballad, inspired by a screenplay by fellow Topanga resident, Dean Stockwell, was lambasted by critics, and loved by the record buying public, making the album of the same name Neil's second biggest seller. Few people care to parse out the thorny meaning of the lyrics, which take us from a knight's festival, to a squalid junkie's basement, to an alien spaceship coming to herald a new world.Maybe it was all the acid I was consuming, but the thing made perfect sense to me – I simply flowed with the imagery, and bathed in the keening vocalism of the protagonist, an acquired taste to be sure. I also fucking loved that flugelhorn! If you're a fan you might prefer Heart of Gold, Cinnamon Girl, Old Man, The Needle and the Damage Done, or many of his other myriad time trips. All good, all good. All I know is that I love Neil dearly, and I'm glad he's been with us all this time. Through it all, he has remained Neil. He has always demonstrated a stubborn independence, and made his own way against a sea of antagonistic forces and voices, corporate and artistic – a level of integrity which I so admire, and, from which I often fall so short. For years, Tell Me Why, and Only Love Can Break Your Heart were on my set list. One reviewer covering my act wrote that when I sang high I was an ersatz Neil Young, and when I sang low I was a bargain basement Cat Stevens. Of course I did; I was finding my voice, asshole!

In this episode we go back to our year long hometown series celebrating the best shows in the band's 30-year history emanating from their Seattle residence. This week we look at another important show in the lineage as this surprise Showbox show from 1996 was the tune up for that fall's No Code tour. We get EIGHT, yes, EIGHT song debuts from this night from the No Code record so there will be a lot of discussion about the earliest renditions of these songs and how they'd evolve. Sure, the first half of this show is No Code and as mentioned, basically everything is a debut (outside of previously played Habit and Red Mosquito) but we also get some important moments during the 'jukebox' set. We get the first ever extended Immortality intro and the first time Cinnamon Girl was tagged on I Got Shit. We'll also get into a larger discussion about how some of the Ten, Vs. era songs weren't clicking at the time the way they once were and also how Ed was considering new vocal changes that strayed from his mid-90s primal screaming. “I was really influenced by punk bands in the 80s and 90s. I liked they were screaming about things I had in my head,” said Philip Harder, who got his start as a music video director. Working with artists like The Cranberries, Foo Fighters, Incubus, and Prince, he learned how to tell stories and capture emotions in short formats. “I joined a band, bought a Super 8, and that led to a music video career.” In Harder’s latest film, ‘Tuscaloosa,’ college graduate Billy Mitchell (Devon Bostick) finds his plans change when he falls in love with an inmate who has multiple personalities (Natalia Dyer), who lives at his father’s mental institution. Based on the novel by Glasgow Phillips, the story stood out to Harder because of the way it “weaved a love story with humor during a pretty intense racial time period in the early 1970s.” He added, “This was something I felt would make a fascinating movie.” In this interview, the writer-director talks about involuntary spontaneity on set, how Prince’s “Cinnamon Girl” influenced ‘Tuscaloosa,’ how to work in “overtime mode,” the importance of total immersion, how to survive the “witching hour,” and why casting is everything. If you enjoyed this interview, look for the print version on Creative Screenwriting’s website, and join thousands of viewers for the new YouTube video essay series, Creative Principles, which dissects new films, series, and more: bit.ly/2FARJz5

In this lesson, Dan and I take a look at some of the songs which I am performing with my band and so we focus on the dual guitar parts. I bring several songs which I am learning with other musicians in our covers band ready for a gig we will be performing in Brighton. We first look at American Girl by Tom Petty, with some talk about inversions and effects. Secondly, Dan gives me some feedback on some dual parts I came up with for Neil Young’s Cinnamon Girl. Next we pay the Smith’s What Difference Does it Make? a quick bit of consideration. We finish this lesson off by some discussion with usable ideas for the solo in Substitute by the Who and the outro solo for Feel Like Makin Love by Bad Company. As always, there are plenty of other examples thrown in to assist Dan’s explanation of his ideas and ways of approaching dual guitar situations and a good improvisation session towards the end of the lesson. Our next lesson 15 will return to the solo at the end of Feel Like Makin' Love as we look at some tips on transcribing. We have asked this on Facebook & Twitter What was the most disappointing game that you've ever played. So myself, Merovingian, and Cinnamon Girl all have some different ideas about this question, it's a very individual topic that can have thousands of different answers depending on who you ask. So your answer might vary from ours, which doesn't mean we're wrong, it just means you're not right. All joking aside, The Merovingian admitted that I was the better gamer, personal win. Reason being that he finally submitted to all of my pestering about playing Dark Souls, and his need of my guidance and tutelage. We also discuss some TV shows & movies, Merovingian and Cinnamon Girl went to see Lucy at the movie theater, so a spoiler free review about it. Rockers Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have just released their third album together. "Under The Covers Vol.3" is their third album of covers that the duo put together from the songbooks of other artists that they both feel passionate about. Susanna returned to The Time Machine Radio Show last week to share the latest batch of songs. The gifted artist discussed the inspiration behind some of the songs off of the new album. She also discussed with The Time Machine's radio show host, Michael McCartney, the previous two albums from the duo known affectionately as Sid 'n' Susie (Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs), as well as her 2012 album "Someday", which became the most played album on the air for The Time Machine out of all of the records released in 2012. If you're not familiar with the album series that Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs have been recording and releasing, what you essentially need to know is that the first album covered sixties material (with the exception of the early seventies classic Bee Gees song "Run To Me"). The second album "Under The Covers Vol. 2" dove into the seventies and this latest album naturally dips into the eighties. Dips may not be the correct choice of wording. This new album plunges into the eighties and both Matthew and Susanna's song choices are so inspired that this collection of songs are a must have for your music collection. Susanna is a core artist of The Time Machine's radio format going back to the eighties with her fellow band mates Vicki Peterson, Debbi Peterson and Michael Steele of The Bangles. The band, along with The Traveling Wilburys, were the most played act on The Time Machine and helped define a sound for the radio broadcast that embraced a sixties musical sensibility with the modern music scene of the time. All four albums from The Bangles in the eighties solidified their status as radio core artists on The Time Machine and their return in 2003 with "Doll Revolution" was welcomed with open arms. The domination of that album's airplay was so strong that it became the most played album of the decade followed by Rachael Yamagata's debut album "Happenstance", "Not Ready To Make Nice" by The Dixie Chicks, Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising", Alice Peacock's self titled sophomore album, "Come Away With Me" by Norah Jones, John Mayer's "Room For Squares", "Mondo Magneto" by Brian Ray, "Lurch" from Mike Viola, "Brainwashed" by George Harrison, Nushu's "Nevermind Lullabye" and Rilo Kiley's "More Adventurous". Susanna found this old flyer to share for a June 13th, 1981 performance of The Colours, before the band became The Bangles, in the basement of the Echo Park Methodist Church Other artists heard on this Maui afternoon FM broadcast include The Bangles, Rachael Yamagata and Ronnie Spector.
