This month the Devils have been watching movies full of cackling witches, flying heads, magic spells and, erm, mayoral elections. It's a quintet of quite bizarre Indonesian horror movies from 1980-82, including Mystics in Bali and Queen of Black Magic. Along the way our discussion takes in surprising BBFC ratings, our Great Lord Willy Wasser, unnecessarily aggressive Carter USM fans, Yeti spaff, and the Mannequin Pis of Piss. And under the spotlight in this month's Horror Helpdesk segment: a question of continuity in the Alien franchise. We've got you covered...nah. Duck and cover...nope. Maybe you can judge a song by its cover...forget it, that's dumb. Well, after laboriously trying to find the right "cover" pun, we'll just leave it at this: This week, we're talking about cover versions. In short, versions of songs that were originally recorded by another artist. And there were oodles and gobs of brilliant cover versions during the O3L era, including many by the wildly popular British '90s band Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine. Hey, maybe we're better at segues than we are at puns, because our Third Lad this week is Jim Bob from Carter USM! With his musical partner Fruitbat in Carter, Jim racked up four Top 10 albums, 14 Top 40 singles, including a string of classics like 'Sheriff Fatman,' 'Bloodsport For All,' 'After The Watershed,' and 'The Only Living Boy In New Cross,' and headlined Glastonbury before calling it a day (for the first time) in 1997. Carter defied categorization, with an anything-goes juxtaposition of styles of punk to dance, with biting wit, keen social commentary and a knack for clever wordplay. But Jim Bob couldn't stop there, and has become one of pop's renaissance men. Since Carter, he has written two memoirs, six novels, a stage production, and released 12 solo records, including his latest, Thanks For Reaching Out, out from Cherry Red on 30th June. The album contains 38 minutes of pop, punk rock, devastatingly moving ballads and more topical than an episode of Newsnight, with songs about Putin (‘The Day of Reckoning'), the Taliban (‘This is End Times') and whoever ‘Billionaire in Space' is about. It's not all doom and gloom though (it's mostly doom and gloom). ‘Sebastian's Gone On A Ridelaong' is a hilarious psychobilly romp and the pre-coronation written ‘The Prince of Wales' is like a pub lock-in, it's Bowie's ‘Kooks' for older people. During this episode, you'll also get a first listen of Jim's cover of The Psychedelic Furs' 'Pretty In Pink,' which is featured on a covers bonus disc available with the CD version of Thanks For Reaching Out. Among the topics "covered" during this episode: Power ballads! Duck Hunt! Interior decorating! The brilliance of Mark Reynolds aka Stuff by Mark! Serial killer chic! Music video controversy! Milwaukee! Drowning bands! Stevie Wonder in a sock! Jim entering his Young Americans period! And loads of British enthusiasm! There's an album I've really enjoyed this year. It's called Here's What You could Have Won and it's by the Hastings born punk band Kid Kapichi. It's shouty and funny and its songs do a pretty good job at squewering the grizzled mess that is England right now. I've always been a sucker for that kind of thing. Late era Gallows, Slaves, Carter USM, Sex Pistols, Billy Bragg. Englands bleeeeeeding. That sort of thing. And so I thought I'd check in with singer Jack Wilson before the year was out to talk gentrification, America's opiod crisis, corrupt politicians… and The Beatles. Because whatever shit we might have to endure, we've always got The Beatles. My gut is telling me that 2023 is going to be a big year for them. Not The Beatles, Kid Kapichi. All you need is love. And hate. Which is sometimes the same thing, I think...Join the Substack, won't you?

For Jim Bob is an eloquent and thoughtful musician with very good insights and understandings on the music scene with experience in the game. Carter blew up on the UK pop scene back in the late 80's / early 90's, and you may remember Jim Bob rocking that wildly influentional haircut if nothing else, but it's fascinating to hear about his time in the scene back then and to draw parallels with Pip about the game now, and what's happened in between. Including run ins with The Rolling Stones and Philip Scofield. A ton to enjoy, and maybe now's a great time to go back through the back catalogue with fresh ears... Sonaron. S*M*A*S*H special with Ed Borrie in conversation with David Eastaugh Ed Borrie and Salvatore Alessi formed S*M*A*S*H after meeting at school in the mid-1980s - Salvatore had previously been in a band called GLC.Rob Hague joined soon afterwards. The band's sound recalled the late 1970s and early 1980s punk and new wave bands. The Britishmusic press were enthusiastic about the band creating a scene called New wave of new wave, along with similar UK bands of the time such as Echobelly, Sleeper, Compulsion and These Animal Men.[3] The band's second single was a tribute to feminism called "Lady Love Your Cunt".[1] It appeared on their debut mini album "S*M*A*S*H" which was a compilation of their first two limited edition 7" singles, and was well received by critics. The band made some appearances on UK TV programmes such as Naked City, as well as live performances, including a collaboration with Billy Bragg during an Anti-Nazi League rally. With a recording contract, the band toured tirelessly, increasing press coverage and attention from fans. The trio still found time to laugh at themselves, occasionally performing under the name S*H*I*T*E. The trio made an appearance on BBC Television's Top of the Pops, singing "Shame". They became the first to appear on the BBC's flagship chart show without officially releasing a single - their debut EP having reached number 26 in the UK Albums Chart. Their only hit single was "(I Want to) Kill Somebody", which was only available in the shops for one day in 1994. It reached number 26 in the UK Singles Chart. Its controversial subject matter eventually lead to its banning. Their debut full-length album, Self Abused, was not a commercial success, although the group remained a favourite of the critics. The band recorded a single for the Seattle based label Sub Pop, but S*M*A*S*H remained virtually unknown outside the UK, despite a whistle-stop tour of the United States and support slots across Europe. The EP "Another Love Song E.P." followed in 1995, before the group released their final single, "Rest of My Life", a year later. The band split up in 1996. In 1997 bass player Salv joined Carter USM as a full-time member, but in 2004 the trio reformed, recording a number of tracks for a forthcoming EP and playing several gigs around the UK.

Strange as it may seem to us nowadays, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine had an actual official number one album back in 1992. Grebo is an oft-overlooked genre from the time: is that for the best or are we unfairly overlooking what it had to offer? With opinions ranging from "not really bothered" to "actively disliked them" between Krister and Dave will this album win them round? We talk about loads more in this episode as well including the likes of En Vogue, R. Kelly and Aphex Twin. You can hear all of the songs we discuss in our companion Spotify playlist and immerse yourself more fully in 90s goodness with our ongoing "best of the albums we've featured" playlist. A broad genre we know but that's the nature of good music and we here at Riff Monkeys HQ are not shy of stepping outside the box. On the show are such luminaries as Skunk Anansie, Mansun with 808 State, Daisy Chainsaw, The Super Furry Animals, Carter USM, Compulsion and the Senseless Things. So join us and let us shine a light on some of the music you may have missed from the musically wonderful 1990s in the U to the K.
