Gather ‘round, witches and wanderers and welcome to another exciting episode of Three Witches and a Druid! This week, Margo, Mauve, Gwen, and Brian are back at the kitchen table, drinks in hand and minds wide open, diving into one of the spookiest, most intriguing topics yet—where do ghosts, aliens, and cryptids fit into modern paganism?Do spirits of the dead exist alongside our gods and ancestors, or are ghosts something entirely different? Are aliens ancient deities, cosmic travellers, or just figments of our collective imagination? And what about cryptids—are beings like Bigfoot, the Mothman, or the Loch Ness Monster misunderstood nature spirits, magical entities, or creatures science just hasn't caught up with yet?Expect exciting debates, personal stories of the unexplained, and a deep dive into folklore, mythology, and modern pagan practice. Whether you're a skeptic, a believer, or somewhere in between, this episode will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about the supernatural. So grab your favourite brew—tea, mead, or something a little stronger—and pull up a chair. Hear about the somewhat new genre of "witchy" romance novels and related "witch heist" (or magic heist) books, as recommended by Laurie Dreyer, manager of the Lansingburgh branch of Troy Public Library. Also hear short reflections on how romance novels may provide new approaches to examining women's power and roles in society, as well as family and "found family" relationships. Laurie also talks about the rise in interest in romance novels, even among men. Books discussed: "The Ex Hex: A Novel" (Sterling, aka Rachel Hawkins, 2021); "Payback's a Witch" (Harper, 2021); "Witches of Moonshyne Manor" (Marais, 2022); "Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches" (Mandanna, 2022); "Mr. and Mrs. Witch" (Bond, 2023); "A Letter to Three Witches" (Bass, 2022); "Witch Please" (Aguirre, 2021); and "Witcha Gonna Do?" We make a point of setting goals every year—and, even more importantly, actually looking back to see whether we achieved them, and why. We've talked a lot in past years about the importance of setting the right kind of goals (you can get a short PDF on goal-setting and a worksheet below)—by which we mean goals you can control. You can't sell your book to a publisher—that's not a goal within your control. Get an agent, make a best-seller list, same. But you can finish the book, get help with the query, revise, edit, spend X time, write X words, write the proposal—without anyone else having to make a choice that fulfills your dreams. We try to make our goals mostly dreams we can fulfill ourselves, and then add in the big, out-of-control payoffs in sort of a different section. But even given that, we make mistakes. My goals last year were weirdly TOO specific (a more usual problem is that they be too vague) and as it turned out, in several cases although I still wanted to achieve the overarching goal, the specific goal I set didn't interest me any more. This year I plan to give myself a little more leeway.Jess's WOTY (word of the year) last year was Evaluate. Mine was Play. Sarina's was WIP. Jess and Sarina nailed theirs. I… kind of forgot mine. But looking back, I lived up to it. I traveled more for fun than I have in many many years—partly because post-Covid and older kids, but still, it would have been easy to just go no, that's TOO MUCH WORK. But I didn't, I got out there, and I have the memories of the camel ride, the vintage shopping trip, the hike outside San Fransisco, the baths in Asturias, the road trip down the East Coast, the heat in Austin and the crowds watching the World Cup in the plaza in Marrakech to prove it. Thinking of it all makes me think of the new rule form fave guest Laura Vanderkam's Tranquility By Tuesday: Effortful before Effortless. Sometimes “Play” is also kind of hard work. But it's worth it.I'm sending out a discussion thread for next year's WOTYs. You'll get a preview of mine there (I'm already living by it) and hear from Jess and Sarina on the next episode! Or come chat—details below.Links from the PodGifts for WritersEpic (short story by Sarina and Elle Kennedy)Jezebel's Creepy Stories for HalloweenRachael Herron's 90 Days to Done Masterclass@katherineroystudio's reel on how picture books are made#AmReadingSarina: Every Last Fear, Alex FinlayJess: Desert Star, Michael ConnellyKJ: A Letter to Three Witches, Elizabeth BassHEY NOVELISTS—Did you finish NaNoWriMo? Snobs On Film is a monthly movie podcast, exploring one theme per season. This season: love in its strangest forms, across classic and contemporary film. 1. On this episode of Snobs On Film Power, Prophecy and Paranoia - ‘The Tragedy Of Macbeth' In Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth, a tale of paranoia begins with a prophecy, and the road from one to the other is littered with treachery, ambition, and the tragic results of a strange love. Denzel Washington is Macbeth — Shakespeare's ‘man who would be king' — and Frances McDormand is Lady Macbeth; the wife who sparks her husband's lust for power, fanning it into a murderous flame. After Macbeth is told by three witches that he is fated to sit on the throne, Lady Macbeth helps fulfill his destiny by committing an act of betrayal so grim it threatens to drive them both insane. Amidst the ruins of Macbeth's nobility and honor are the urgent words of his wife, steadily encouraging his doomed ascent; using her affection to sweeten her demands as the couple watches their love devolve into conspiracy. When the film ends, Macbeth's tragedy is steeped in lingering questions and blood-soaked regret. But what's done, is done. 2. Background listening from Snobs On Film Last season on Snobs On Film, we explored the theme of redemption in the 1946 film ‘Notorious', starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. Oh jeez - this is a wild one...... Stephanie and Russell are back with another serving and boy, is it a _ROMP_. This week, join them as they head further back into Art History than ever before – to the 16th century to introduce El Greco, a catalyst of Modern Art. Looking to make it big, El Greco left the island life of Crete for the bustling Italian cities of Venice and Rome. There, he picked up traits from Renaissance and Mannerism styles and added some hometown Post-Byzantine spice – resulting in a bizarre yet stunning combination of colors and dynamic compositions never before seen in art history. He also made some friends - and enemies - along the way. Despite the Counter Reformation's harsh grip on Europe, EG was still able to thrive utilizing his strange style (that echoed his eccentric personality) to continually score commissions while managing to stand out amongst his contemporaries. After his death, he was mostly forgotten about until his rediscovery in the 19th century. Modern artists of the 20th century claimed him since he laid the groundwork for breaking visual tradition. And it was famous works like The Annunciation (1597) that caught the eye of Remedios Varo and Pablo Picasso among other art giants like Paul Cezanne. Stephanie and Russell discuss the first iterations of abstraction present in The Annunciation (1597) in which a teenage Mary is receiving heavenly news from towering angels and a turbulent celestial cloud column with floating cherub heads. Topics include: the rebranding of the Catholic Church (RC²), a lotta olives, trash talking Michelangelo (not us), long babies, miniature galleries for rats, time travel, and a plushie Remedios Varo mascot. There is no Art Pantry this week because Bean is missing. The song featured in this episode was “A Forest for me and You” by Komiku from the album A Tale is Never Forgotten which can be found here. THE SWORD is truly a blessing. Blending the crushing heaviness and urgency of their own cutting-edge brand of doom metal with the cosmic feel of classic 70's style prog-rock, THE SWORD has carved out their own place in the pantheon of modern metal. For Shakespeare, although their role doesn't go beyond that of agents and witnesses, the Three Witches represent evil, darkness, chaos, and conflict. Their mere presence (a group of women who are “different”) communicates treason and impending doom. In Shakespeare's day, witches were seen as worse than rebels as they were not only political traitors, but spiritual traitors as well as they were not governed by husbands or politicians. In the case of his three witches, much of the confusion that springs from them comes from their ability to straddle the play's borders between reality and the supernatural. They are so deeply entrenched in both worlds that it is unclear whether they control fate, or whether they are merely its agents. Unlike what women were “supposed” to be a the time, the three women are not being subject to the rules of the real world. What it's All About: This is nothing against all the metaphysical or pagan stores, but more towards the big brand stores (Both online and off) that don't understand the meaning behind the witchy stuff that they sell. This is something new as Paganism grows in popularity. I came about this topic when searching for a niche in my soon to be a freelancing business. Plus when I was on a Pagan Zoom meeting, someone mentioned something that got my attention. I will also be talking about the portrayal of witches in popular culture. I'll explain more about this topic in the show. The Spirit Guide of the Week is Mercury and the Dream Symbols are Chicken, Ocean, Glacier, Lynx, and Coyote. Songs Feature: 1. We will never be without problems in this life. If, in the midst of all the challenges, you cannot learn to thrive in the situation in which you find yourself, you will never find contentment.
