EPISODE 26 is ready to set your speakers ablaze with the sonic tapestry of Topiary Creatures and the mastermind behind their latest opus, Bryson! Today, we're peeling back the layers of indie rock's shimmering new gem with Topiary Creatures' frontman Bryson, as he unravels the journey to their newest album, "The Metaphysical Tech Support Hotline." With a sound that pierces through the veil, this record has already carved its place as a contender for this year's favorite, standing shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Hotline TNT and Prize Horse. Listeners are in for a treat as Bryson shares the alchemy of their music-making, from the spiritual lineage of emo icons to the hands-on production with industry gems. Discover the serendipitous connections that catapulted their sound into the DIY stratosphere and the creative kinship that anchored them in Nashville's vibrant scene. Bryson opens up about the band's process, where genre-defying tracks flow seamlessly, and the art of songwriting becomes a matching game between poetry and melody. He also touches on personal growth, from the loss of faith to finding peace, and how these themes subtly weave into the record's narrative. We also delve into the balancing act of dual lives – the day job that fuels capitalism by day and the maximalist rock that feeds the soul by night. Bryson reflects on the evolution of his artistry, the embrace of creative freedom, and the importance of keeping the passion alive in the grind of DIY music. So, if you're ready to dive into an episode that's not just a conversation but a journey through the heart of indie rock's lush landscape, hit play and join us. A Trinity Hall Christmas Available Now Digital: https://www.scillycoverecords.com/sto... Physical CD: https://www.scillycoverecords.com/sto... At just 16 years of age, Summer hails from Paradise, NL. Two years later she was named as a 2021 Top 10 Indigenous Emerging Artists of Canada. That same year, Summer won the 2021 Newfound Talent Contest from MusicNL where she was able to record her debut single “Carsick”. This past year “Carsick” won the 2022 Arts and Letters Award and was recently listed as one of the top 125 songs in the 2022 CBC Toyota Searchlight competition. Today, we revisit a conversation Tom had in May with John Waters. He's the director of 16 films, a visual artist with museum shows to his credit, a spoken word artist who performs in venues around the world, an actor, and a pitchman for haute couture.  He is also a Son of Baltimore and one of America's most original and enduring voices in the arts, with a deep artistic palette. Waters is the author of several books of non-fiction, including his memoir, Mr. Know it All, a road trip diary called Carsick, and Role Models, his compendium of profiles of people who have influenced his work. Waters' non-fiction commentary is fascinating, funny, insightful and often a bit outrageous. His latest book is his first novel, a book that dials up the outrageousness in a big, wild way. His protagonist is as despicable as they come, and the entourage of people in her orbit are as odd as anyone we encountered in the cult classic movies John Waters made more than 50 years ago. It's called Liarmouth, which Waters describes as a “feel bad romance.” John Waters joined Tom on our digital line from his home in Baltimore. Because our show was pre-recorded, we can't take any new calls or comments, and before we listen to the conversation, we want you to know that John's book makes more than a few explicit sexual references, and he and Tom refer to a few of them.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Filmmaker John Waters has long been a fixture in San Francisco. After a very rough week, a conversation with him gives us a few moments of levity courtesy of his sometimes twisted worldview. The 76-year-old writer, director, and curator of bad taste has made a career of showing us the weirdest of human behavior. In films including "Pink Flamingo," "Mondo Trash," and "HairSpray" and books such as "CarSick" he's made us laugh or at the very least taken us briefly out of the day's reality. He's now written his first novel, "Liarmouth," which continues the John Water legacy.

Demented. He is also the author of Shock Value, Crackpot, Role Models, Make Trouble, and 2014's Carsick, in which-armed with his trademark loud suits, wit, and pencil-thin mustache-Waters mingled with America's denizens as he hitchhiked to the West Coast. In his new book, the ''Pope of Trash'' offers lessons on failing upward, developing wide-ranging cultural and sartorial tastes, loving without emotional peril, and cheating death itself. (This program was originally broadcast on October 5, 2018) Tom's guest for the hour is John Waters. He’s a filmmaker, actor, and writer -- not necessarily in that order. Early in his career, Waters established himself as an enfant terrible who was affectionately dubbed the ----King of Sleaze.---- His filmography spans 40 years and 16 films, some of which are cult classics, while others, like Hairspray, are revered as popular icons.John Waters is also the author of eight books, including Role Models, a collection of essays of people who have shaped his life in important ways; Carsick, his journal of a hitchhiking trip from Baltimore to San Francisco; and Make Trouble, adopted from a speech he delivered at the Rhode Island School of Design. What is perhaps less well known by the general public is that John Waters is also a prolific and insightful visual artist. On Sunday, the Baltimore Museum of Art will open a major retrospective of John’s work, in a show that includes 160 examples of art that show Waters to be a trenchant observer and analyst of popular culture. The show is called Indecent Exposure. John and BMA curator Kristen Hileman will have a public conversation about the exhibition on the first of November. And on Friday night, Nov. 9, the BMA will screen 18 hours of John Waters movies. There will be prizes for folks who complete the entire Waters film marathon.Baltimore is also one of the stops on the John Waters Christmas tour this season. ¡¡Pasen y escuchen!!

This will happen to every parent. You're partway through a long drive, or even a short one, and your kid will be carsick. If you're lucky, you'll only have to deal with the complaining. Your just as likely to be cleaning up vomit. In this episode, Ethan Millard and his guest co-host Rebecca Cressman of FM100.3 will give you everything you need to know when your kid sings out from the back seat... "why am I carsick?" Carsickness is just a type of motion sickness, and motion sickness brings nausea and eventual vomiting- to everyone. Here's why: You sense motion in two ways, you see it with your eyes and you sense it in your inner ear. If those two inputs give you conflicting information, you get carsick. For example, if you feel the motion of the car but your eyes are fixed on a stationary book, boom! Carsick. It works the other way as well. If your eyes see motion but you don't feel it, you can also feel sick. That's why you may feel motion sickness at an Imax film. The good news is, there are ways to deal with it. You can try looking out the window. Looking at something in the distance is supposed to be particularly helpful. Closing your eyes might help as it removes one of the conflicting inputs. You can also try chewing something or rolling down a window. If all else fails, get out of the car and walk around. At least you won't puke on the upholstery! Stuff Your Dad Knows is hosted by Ethan Millard.  What do you do when your children hit you up with crazy questions?  Do you know the answer?  Do you just pretend?  Kids are smart, so this podcast empowers parents to answer those tough questions and stay at the top of the family food chain.  If you want to be more efficient, just listen to the podcast with your children present.  Then you don't have to be the information middle man.  Family harmony is our goal! If you want to ask a question, use #stuffyourdadknows and Ethan will answer it for you!  Follow him @EthanMillardKSL on Twitter.

Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America (Farrar Strauss Giroux) Skylight Books is over the moon excited to welcome one of our favorite directors, writers and all-around cultural icons,John Waters for the launch of the paperback edition of Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America, his wild and wonderful memoir about what happened (and what might've happened) while hitchhiking across this great nation of ours. NOTE: As with all Skylight Books events, this reading is free and open to the public (first come, first served).  But because we're expecting a large crowd at this event, we'll be giving out numbered tickets to the signing line to keep things organized.  To get a ticket to the signing line, you must purchase a paperback copy of Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America here at Skylight Books.  Tickets will be available starting May 12, 2015, the official release date for the paperback version of Carsick.  They will be available in-store, or you can order on our website and leave a note in the "Order Comments" field.  We will also hold a ticket for you if you order and pay for a book over the phone.  In addition to books, John Waters will sign memorabila and will pose for photographs with individual attendees. Thank you! From acclaimed filmmaker and cult artist, John Waters, comes a cross-country hitchhiking journey with America's most beloved weirdo. John Waters is putting his life on the line. Armed with wit, a pencil-thin mustache, and a cardboard sign that reads "I'm Not Psycho," he hitchhikes across America from Baltimore to San Francisco, braving lonely roads and treacherous drivers. But who should we be more worried about, the delicate film director with genteel manners or the unsuspecting travelers transporting the Pope of Trash?  Before he leaves for this bizarre adventure, Waters fantasizes about the best and worst possible scenarios: a friendly drug dealer hands over piles of cash to finance films with no questions asked, a demolition-derby driver makes a filthy sexual request in the middle of a race, a gun-toting drunk terrorizes and holds him hostage, and a Kansas vice squad entraps and throws him in jail. So what really happens when this cult legend sticks out his thumb and faces the open road? His real-life rides include a gentle eighty-one-year-old farmer who is convinced Waters is a hobo, an indie band on tour, and the perverse filmmaker's unexpected hero: a young, sandy-haired Republican in a Corvette.  Laced with subversive humor and warm intelligence, Carsick is an unforgettable vacation with a wickedly funny companion--and a celebration of America's weird, astonishing, and generous citizenry. Praise for Carsick: “Waters idiosyncratically cuts to the core of American diversity, finding the good (and bad) in any situation with biting wit…Waters devotees take note: this is required reading.” –Publishers Weekly, starred review “Waters has made a funny engaging and—of course—occasionally outrageous book . . . All in all a cool trip and a delightful book." - Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post “Fantastical and plush . . . Carsick becomes a portrait not just of America's desolate freeway nodes — though they're brilliantly evoked — but of American fame itself.”  – NY Times Book Review   “Travel—uh, hitchhiking—book of the year?" —Ray Olson, Booklist   "A flavorful book, with the same cheeky sentimentality we experienced in Water's memoir Role Models plus a Divine-sized dose of kitsch. John Waters fans like me will be ecstatic." —Annie Coreno, Publishers Weekly “Waters gives full rein to his trash roots with fictional creations that rival anything he's ever put on screen…Waters, in short, discovers Middle America, somewhere safely between his imaginary world of trash and the glitz of high culture.” –Norman Powers, New York Journal of Books   “A good helping of unbridled lewdness is surely to be expected, and no doubt cherished, from the man known as the king of filth and the pope of trash.”—Geoff Nicholson, San Francisco Chronicle   “Waters doesn't bore us with theories as to why the open road has become so much less open; he allows his nasty nostalgic fantasies to hint at the abandon so absent from our lives.”— Michael Andor Brodeur   “Waters offers readers an outlandish glimpse into his mind in vintage Waters fashion…the book is also an homage to a lost American pastime of getting into cars with strangers.”—Justin Snow, Metro Weekly   “The book, a kind of ode to America, fits with Mr. Waters's belief that New York is no longer the creative center of the universe” M.H. Miller, New York Observer   “The novellas read like short stories that could be made into films… Funny and shocking…yet fans of the filmmaker's work will likely be more amused than shocked.”—Gary M. Kramer, Frontiers John Waters is an American filmmaker, actor, writer, and visual artist best known for his cult films, including Hairspray, Pink Flamingos, and Cecil B. DeMented. He is also the author of a memoir, Role Models. He lives in Baltimore, Maryland.
