What the Riff!?! delves once again into the great (and not so great) Christmas songs to add a little cheer as you rock around the Christmas tree this year. WSB Radio host Eric Von Haessler joins us for the fun!“The Holly and the Ivy” by Jon AndersonJon Anderson's fourth solo album came out in 1985, and was a mixture of traditional Christmas carols and original material.  This is a traditional British folk Christmas carol.  Though it can't be traced any further back than the 1800's, the association between holly and Christmas dates back to medieval times.“Please Come Home for Christmas” by the EaglesDon Henley, Glenn Frey, and the rest of the Eagles put out this popular sad Christmas track in 1978, though it was a cover originally performed by blues pianist Charles Brown in 1960, and co-written by Brown and Gene Redd.“The First Noel” by Crash Test DummiesFront man Brad Roberts puts his distinctive bass voice to work on this traditional Christmas tune.  This carol originated in Cornwall, England and dates back to at least the early 1800's, using the French "Noel" as a synonym for the Christmas season“The 12 Days of Christmas” by  Straight, No ChaserThis acapella group from Indiana University puts some comedic musicianship to work on this Christmas round.  We know you'll like it, sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus from the Serengeti.  “Nut Rocker” by Emerson, Lake & PalmerELP puts a prog rock spin on the classic Nutcracker Suite.  Russian composer Tchaikovsky wrote the original Nutcracker as a two-act ballet in 1892, and is a fantasy taking place at the foot of a Christmas tree.“Christmas All Over Again” by Tom Petty and the HeartbreakersThis original song was penned by Tom Petty on a ukulele in 1992.  It was used in the motion picture "Home Alone 2:  Lost in New York," and also appeared in "Jingle All the Way."  Jeff Lynne co-produced the song, played bells, bass, timpani, sang background vocals, and wishes for a Chuck Berry Songbook in the song.“The Christmas Song” by WeezerThis is not the one you're familiar with.  The more famous "The Christmas Song" was first performed by the Nat King Cole trio in 1946.  Weezer did this introspective original song with the same name in 2000 on a fan club Christmas LP.“Minnie and Santa” by Cyndi LauperLauper released this light hearted Christmas song in 1998 which tells of a fling that Minnie (not the mouse!) had with old Kris Kringle.  This may sound like a cover of a classic song, but it is an original written by Lauper and Jan Pulsford.“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Frank SinatraYou can't go wrong with Old Blue Eyes and a crooner Christmas classic.  This song originated in 1943 and was in the musical "Meet Me in St. Louis," where it was sung by Judy Garland.“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen/We Three Kings”  by Barenaked LadiesThis Christmas medley also features fellow Canadian singer-songwriter Sara McLachlan joining in with the Barenaked Ladies.“Listen, The Snow is Falling” by Yoko Ono & the Plastic Ono BandHear us out - this is an Ono piece that is actually quite good!  It was released in 1971 as the B-side to the better known "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," sung by John Lennon.“If It Doesn't Snow On Christmas” by Joe PesciChasing Macaulay Culkin isn't the only association Pesci has with Christmas.  He put this cover of an old Gene Autry song out on his 1998 album "Vincent LaGuardia Gambini Sings Just for You."(and there might be a bonus ending related to the Beatles...)We at What the Riff?!? wish every one a blessed and Merry Christmas! After surveying all of the available new Christmas and holiday themed music that I could find, I came up with a tidy playlist of nine noteworthy songs to share here in an episode that departs from our usual artist interview format. Here, we play full songs in several sets, with some back stories on each artist and song. Ranging from the elegant, folky take on “Coventry Carol” by The Milk Carton Kids to country leaning Americana in “Layaway Momma” from Adam Chaffins, to previous Southern Songs and Stories guest The Get Right Band and other fellow western NC artists, this episode celebrates an array of styles and perspectives on the season. With list in hand, little Joey Kendrick sits happily on Santa's lap across from sister Leigh, who ponders the validity of the this oddly formal and forced tradition. Circa 1976. Included here is a special from Christmas past, from my days producing the radio show What It Is on public radio WNCW, with founding panelists Jeff Eason and Fred Mills. We celebrated Jeff's life and many contributions to music and journalism after his passing in 2018 on this podcast, in the episode “Remembering Jeff Eason”. Following the music portion of this episode, we take you back fifteen years, to a time when What It Is was just two years old. You will hear a younger version of me (with a cold) talking by phone with Jeff and Fred in two short episodes, detailing some of our favorite holiday music as well as the Christmas and holiday music we would love to do without. Songs heard in this episode: Dulci Ellenberger “Colorful Christmas”Ana Egge “Silver Bells Ring” John Doyle and Mick McAuley “Gleann na-Ean”The Get Right Band “Christmas As A Kid”The Pinkerton Raid, “Happy XMas (War Is Over)”, from Winter Songs By Other PeopleAdam Chaffins “Layaway Momma” JD Clayton “Your Favorite Christmas Song” The Milk Carton Kids “Coventry Carol”, from Christmas In A Minor KeyJenn Grant “Bells Are Ringing”Thanks for listening! We hope you can help spread awareness of what we are doing. It is as easy as telling a friend and following this podcast on your platform of choice, so easy! You can find us on Apple here, and Spotify here — hundreds more episodes and many hundreds more artists await you. From there it takes just a moment to give us a top rating, and where it is an option, a review! It makes a great difference because the more top reviews and ratings we get, the more visible we become to everyone on those platforms, which means that more people just like you connect with artists like The Get Right Band, Dulci Ellenberger, John Doyle, and literally hundreds more we have profiled that are at your fingertips. Speaking of Silas Durocher and The Get Right Band, their episode from 2023 stands the test of time, and you can find that by looking up “Psychedelia in the Carolinas Then and Now With The Get Right Band and Ken Friedman” on southernsongsandstories.com, as well as the search feature on your podcast platform of choice. This series is a part of the lineup of both public radio WNCW and Osiris Media, with all of the Osiris shows available here. You can also hear new episodes on Bluegrass Planet Radio here. Thanks also to Jaclyn Anthony for producing the radio adaptations of this series on WNCW, where we worked with Joshua Meng, who wrote and performed our theme songs — you can link to his music here. Hi Folks!  Christmas is the winter holiday we choose to celebrate and this year for our Christmas bonus episode we wanted to cover John Lennon and Yoko Ono/The Plastic Ono Band's song 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)'.  We ask the question: is this a protest song, Christmas song or both?  We discuss the history of the song and artists as well as talk about Miley Cyrus and Sean Ono Lennon's version. And of course we talk about Celine Dion's truly bombastic version.  Wherever you are this holiday season we thank you for listening and for your support this past year.  Thank you!Intro/Outro Music:Upbeat Forever by Kevin MacLeodLink: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5011-upbeat-foreverLicense: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

Is Over)”, do John Lennon. Happy Tuesday, Christmas fanatics! Welcome to the thirty-seventh official installment of “Another Christmas Story”! Due to some unforeseen scheduling confusion last week, this episode is a few days late - so apologies for that! In addition, this installment will not be read by our very own Thom Crowe. Instead, it will be read by Matt Spaulding of "2 Broke Geeks", "The F.B.I.'s Most Unwanted", and "Green Mountain Santa", who brings to life this installment of our tale: Chapter Thirty-Six, entitled, "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)"! We hope you like it! If you do, make sure to share this episode and our website, upon which the text of this installment is posted, to get it in front of as many ears and eyes as possible! Coming up on the show this upcoming Monday, October 18th, we will be continuing our journey through Spooky Month by covering the beloved, 1985 cartoon, “Garfield's Halloween Adventure”! And dropping in your feeds on Monday, October 25th, will an episode we're recording on Wednesday, October 13th, in which we will be joined by Ron Hogan (a.k.a. PresidentHotdog) and Jay Skipworth of "Film Strip Podcast" to talk about the iconic, 1978 horror film, "Halloween"! Meanwhile, this upcoming Thursday, October 14th (which just so happens to be the birthday of Anthony's mom, so Happy Birthday to her!), you'll get to hear Chapter Thirty-Seven of “Another Christmas Story” entitled “Fairytale of New York”, which - due to some confusion with the schedule - will be brought to life for you by both Kim Cooper of "Planning for Christmas" and our very own Thom Crowe! So, keep your eyes on your podcast feeds because there's lots of great stuff coming up! Enjoy, y'all!

Happy Monday, Christmas fanatics! Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day and, to our Canadian friends and family, Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! Join Julia, Thom, and Anthony as they continue their journey through Spooky Season by traveling back in time to the fictional town of Woodsboro, California - 1996 - to cover the satirical-horror film, "Scream"! While this is one of Anthony's favorite movies of all time, Thom hasn't seen it since it came out and Julia has never seen it in full despite it being such a cultural zeitgeist! What do our two Oklahomans think of it? Does it stand the test of time or is it outdated? And did the film set out to fulfill its mission of not only deconstructing the most iconic scary movies that everybody knows, but also becoming one of the greats itself? Tune in to find out the answers to all of these questions and much, much more in this fun episode full of well-researched (for once!) trivia and a wide-ranging discussion! Also in this episode, the elves read listener feedback regarding the following questions: 1. Who would you cast in a "Sesame Street" version of "A Christmas Carol"? 2. What is the worst Christmas gift you've ever received? 3. What are the "rules" to survive an episode of "Tis the Podcast"? So, settle in with your favorite Autumn-flavored drink, open those windows to let in that Fall breeze, and enjoy! This is one spooky episode you want to be sure not to miss! And if you want even more "Tis the Podcast", check your podcast feeds this upcoming Tuesday (tomorrow!) to hear Chapter Thirty-Six of “Another Christmas Story” entitled “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”, which Matt Spaulding of "2 Broke Geeks", "The F.B.I.'s Most Unwanted", and "Green Mountain Santa" will be reading to you! The delay comes after a bit of confusion in which both our very own Thom and Kim Cooper, of "Planning for Christmas" both ended up reading Chapter Thirty-Seven, so Chapter Thirty-Six wasn't ready to release next week as it wasn't recorded! Never fear though, in addition to Chapter Thirty-Six dropping tomorrow, check your feeds this upcoming Thursday to hear a mash-up of both Thom and Kim reading Chapter Thirty-Seven of our tale, entitled, "Fairytale of New York"! Quest for the truth (The Ken Rick podcast)

From 1968 to 1972, Lennon produced more than a dozen records with Ono, including a trilogy of avant-garde albums, his first solo LP John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, and the international top 10 singles "Give Peace a Chance", "Instant Karma!", "Imagine" and "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)". In 1969, he held the two week-long anti-war demonstration Bed-Ins for Peace. After moving to New York City in 1971, his criticism of the Vietnam War resulted in a three-year attempt by the Nixon administration to deport him. In 1975, Lennon disengaged from the music business to raise his infant son Sean and, in 1980, returned with the Ono collaboration Double Fantasy. He was shot and killed in the archway of his Manhattan apartment building by a Beatles fan, Mark David Chapman, three weeks after the album's release. As a performer, writer or co-writer, Lennon had 25 number one singles in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Double Fantasy, his best-selling album, won the 1981 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. In 1982, Lennon was honoured with the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. In 2002, Lennon was voted eighth in a BBC poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. Rolling Stone ranked him the fifth-greatest singer and thirty-eighth greatest artist of all time. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (in 1997) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (twice, as a member of the Beatles in 1988 and as a solo artist in 1994). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/kenrick-rampersad/message

When we did our Rock-and-Roll Christmas "rabbit hole" episode last year we realized that there are just too many Rocking Christmas songs to be held in a single podcast. So we're coming back to you this year with another selection of Christmas songs that rock!“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” by- Ronnie James Dio This selection from the former Rainbow and Black Sabbath front man puts a metal twist on a 16th century carol.“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” by The Barenaked Ladies A more mellow take on the same song features stripped down acoustics and harmonies. Sarah McLachlan is featured in this cover.“Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” by John Lennon Brian features the well-known original piece from John Lennon and Yoko Ono from 1971. They are joined by the Harlem Community Choir“Christmas” by The Who, from “Tommy”Rob brings us a deep cut from the rock opera Tommy. In this vignette, Tommy's father questions how Tommy can be saved given his inability to see, hear, or speak.“Do They Know It's Christmas?” by  Band Aid This 1984 compilation was created as a means of providing support to famine victims in Ethiopia. Bob Geldof and an all-star cast of singers was assembled including Sting, Bono, Bananarama, Boy George, and Simon Le Bon.“Stone Soul Christmas” by Binky Griptite Wayne puts the soul in Christmas with this 2011 effort. Binky Griptite is a DJ in New York and was the guitarist for the Dap-Kings.“Christmas Presents Blues” by Jimmy Reed Wayne keeps the funk going with this rousing bass line and double entendre laden tune from 1971.“I'm Your Santa” by Lil' Ed and the Imperials We drift into the blues with this New Orleans-style cut from Alligator Records.“Celebrate Me Home” by Kenny Loggins Bruce features one from Loggins' debut solo album in 1977. While this has now become a Christmas standard, it was not released as a single at the time, and was not intended to become a standard.“Baby It's Cold Outside” by Frank Loesser Brian's pick is the Dean Martin 1959 cover of this classic. Loesser originally wrote this as a housewarming song. When MGM bought the song, Frank's wife was furious that he had sold it.“All I Want for Christmas Is You”  by Mariah Carey Bruce took a little heat from the boys when he brings us this original piece from 1994 that has become a best-selling modern day Christmas song. Its Carey's biggest international hit, and the best selling Christmas single by a female artist overall.“Oh Tannenbaum” by Vince Guaraldi Christmas wouldn't be the same without “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” This piano jazz cover of the classic Christmas carol takes you to that show, and a rather dinky tree.“Come Home for Christmas” by the Eagles This 1978 cover is the first Eagles song to feature Timothy B. Schmit on bass after Randy Meisner left. The original version was released in 1960 by pianist Charles Brown.“Same Auld Lang Syne” by Dan FogelbergBrian features an autobiographical story from Fogelberg. This happened when he was returning home to Peoria when Jill went out for Egg Nog and Dan went out for whipping cream. Fogelberg did not reveal the name of he old flame, but she came forward after his death.LAUGH TRACK:“Walking Round in Women's Underwear” by Bob Rivers Wayne brings us into our "Laugh Track" part of the podcast with this comical take on Christmas and cross-dressing.“Hanukkah Song” by Adam SandlerWe finish off with this comical take on the Jewish holiday from Adam Sandler, where we find out that David Lee Roth, Henry Winkler, William Shattner, and Leonard Nimoy are all jewish. Harrison wrote "Try Some Buy Some" in early 1971, in an attempt to relaunch the singing career of former Ronettes lead singer Ronnie Spector. Ronnie was married to Phil Spector at that time, who produced the record. The track featured star performers: Harrison played guitars, Gary Wright (Spooky Tooth) keyboards, Klaus Voormann (Manfred Mann) bass, John Barham string arrangement, Jim Gordon (Derek and the Dominos) on drums, Pete Ham (Badfinger) guitar. The song would be included on a planned comeback album on the Beatles' Apple Records. Harrison wrote the song on an organ, while he used to compose on guitar. This may explain the strange harmonic structure of the song. Klaus Voormann recalls that he had to step in so that Harrison could hear the entire piece played through: "He played the song on the piano with his right hand, just with three fingers. He couldn't play with five fingers and he couldn't play the whole song with two hands on the piano. I had to play the left hand part so he could hear how the whole song sounded." Also note that the song is a waltz (3/4 rhythm), which is unusual for a pop song. It includes some rhythm patterns that are derived from Indian music. It was released as an Apple Single in 1971 (and included on the CD “Come and Get It: The Best of Apple Records” in 2010). The single flopped and the critics were not forgiving for this Harrisong, or Ronnie’s singing…The whole thing turned out to be a huge disappointment, in particular for Phil Spector, who had put enormous effort in producing his trademark ‘Wall Of Sound” backing track for the song. Phil was proud of his achievement and expected that it would be hailed as a masterpiece. However, it appears that the Wall of Sound concept had outlived its days, and the song was far too ‘deep’ for Ronnie’ audience. The whole come-back album was scrapped, and Ronnie and Phil divorced…… In 1973, Harrison added his own vocal onto the 1971 instrumental track and included the result on his album Living in the Material World. Some critics find it doesn’t fit on the album, and Harrison may be singing in a key that was a bit too high for him (because he used a backing track made for Ronnie). Lennon liked the song and later said that the descending melody played by the string section was an inspiration behind his 1974 song "#9 Dream". The lyrics may also have something to do with “Buy Some Try Some”, as both songs begin with a reference to the past: "Way back in time / Someone said try some…. Compare with #9 Dream: “So long ago, was it in a dream, was it just a dream?” Earlier, Lennon already based the musical backing of his 1971 single "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" on that of "Try Some Buy Some". In recent years, "Try Some Buy Some" has won more acclaim, and its unique musical structure is recognized. Paul-René Lee alerted me to Ronnie’s 1971 version, and making a duet with Harrison’s 1973 version was straightforward, since both used the same backing track. The Best of Both Worlds?
