In this episode of the Rokcast, Jaden Bales sits down with Aquila Brown, a BC hunter who flat-out earned a monster timber giant mule deer the hard way. This wasn't some glass-a-basin-and-pick-a-buck hunt. This was thick, steep, nasty timber on an over-the-counter tag, with almost no visibility and plenty of pressure. Aquila spent close to 20 days scouting and hunting one specific buck and made the decision early that he was either killing that deer or eating the tag. We dig into how he hunted mule deer where glassing barely works. Trail cameras became his eyes in the woods, snow tracks kept him in the game, and still-hunting was the only real way to make something happen. Aquila breaks down how slow is actually “slow enough,” how he handled missing the buck by hours or a couple hundred yards, and why believing the deer was still there mattered more than anything. If you hunt dark timber, pressured OTC units, or country that just feels hopeless most days, this episode will hit home. It all comes together on the very last day of the season with a fast, offhand shot through a tiny opening in the trees. We talk about passing good bucks late in the season, trusting the process, and what it feels like when everything finally clicks after weeks of grinding. This is a real look at killing a giant mule deer on purpose, not by luck, and why sometimes the hardest hunts are the ones that stay with you forever. Today we discuss arguably the most important topic facing our working forests, that of the excess supply of small-diameter timber. Shaun and Brady are joined by Dr. Matthew Pelkki, Director of the Center for Forest Business at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. He discusses the consequences of not finding market outlets for this material, both economic and ecological, and walks us through several alternative futures that could help in dealing with this wicked problem that will require multiple solutions to ultimately bring our forests back in balance in the near and longer term. The purpose is to provide the listener with items that they promote to their policymakers and legislators to help smooth the expansion of existing and creation of new end use markets that utilize already developed technologies that are ready to scale. Druk neemt toe nu Xabi Alonso clubloos is. Quinten Timber debuteerde bij Marseille, Dzeko (39) redde Schalke en Nani (39) maakt een comeback. Forestry experts are warning that the UK needs to plant more trees for timber. We import around 80% of the timber we use, but there are fears of a shortage of wood for house building, pallets or fencing if more conifer plantations aren't created. MPs on the all party group on forestry are discussing the issue. We speak to the industry body Confor which says we can grow they type of wood we need.Feijoas are a popular fruit in New Zealand but a bit of a mystery to most Brits. The fruit isn't really imported and until now it wasn't grown here. Well, that changed when a New Zealander in Sussex had an idea. We meet the couple behind a new growing enterprise. All week we're focusing on sustainability in farming, whether that's from an environmental point of view, resilience in supply chains or from a financial perspective. Farming is seasonal and unpredictable, which can make it hard to plan financially - veg growers for example find it hard to predict how much they'll earn from one month to the next. Margins are tight and prices don't necessarily reflect the cost of production. We speak to a producer and campaigner who's part of a cooperative which would like to see a basic income for all farmers.Presenter = Charlotte Smith Producer = Rebecca Rooney

Top Stories for January 22nd Publish Date: January 22nd PRE-ROLL: Gwinnett County Public Schools From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Thursday, January 22nd and Happy birthday to Sam Cooke I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. A winter storm is coming, but its impact remains unclear Jeff Foxworthy to tape comedy special at Gwinnett's Gas South Theater Struggling Georgia timber industry could receive big tax break Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on breads All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Sugar Hill Ice Skating Rink STORY 1: A winter storm is coming, but its impact remains unclear Gwinnett County, keep your eyes on the skies this weekend—forecasters are still piecing together just how hard Georgia will get hit by the winter storm barreling across the East Coast. Here’s what we know: a storm is coming. The National Weather Service in Peachtree City confirmed Tuesday night that north Georgia is in its path. “Significant impacts from ice and snow are anticipated,” they said. But the details? Still fuzzy. How far south will it reach? How much snow, ice, or that dreaded wintry mix? Timing? All TBD. Earlier Tuesday, forecasters weren’t even sure if the storm would touch Georgia. By nightfall, they were calling for an 80% chance of winter weather in the north Georgia mountains, tapering to 50% in middle Georgia. FOX 5 meteorologist Jonathan Stacey explained it’s all about Arctic air slamming into Gulf moisture. North Georgia? Likely stuck on the messy line between snow and ice. And with the ground already frozen from days of cold, conditions could get ugly fast. STORY 2: Jeff Foxworthy to tape comedy special at Gwinnett's Gas South Theater Jeff Foxworthy—Grammy nominee, comedy legend, and Atlanta’s own—is coming home to tape a live comedy special, and it’s happening right here in Gwinnett. Two nights only: April 15 and 16 at Gas South Theater. These shows? They’re gonna be up close and personal, packed with brand-new material. Tickets? Artist pre-sale started Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 10 a.m. (use code “JEFF”). General sales kick off Friday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. at GasSouthDistrict.com. Foxworthy isn’t just the king of redneck jokes (though, let’s be honest, they’re iconic). His humor dives into family life, human quirks, and the everyday absurdities we all know too well—think Mark Twain, but with a Southern drawl. With the best-selling comedy album of all time, 26 books, and a spot in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, he’s a comedy powerhouse. His latest special, The Good Old Days, is streaming now on Netflix, and his SiriusXM channel, Jeff and Larry’s Comedy Roundup, keeps the laughs rolling. STORY 3: Struggling Georgia timber industry could receive big tax break Georgia lawmakers are pushing to end sales taxes on timber—a lifeline for an industry that’s been hit hard by mill closures and devastating storms. House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration says the bipartisan effort is about protecting rural Georgia’s backbone. “Timber is a cornerstone of our state’s economy,” he said. “But between sawmill closures and Hurricane Helene’s destruction, timber farmers are struggling. This tax cut could help save livelihoods.” Georgia’s forestry industry, once the nation’s largest, has taken a beating. Hurricane Helene alone wiped out 1.5 million acres in 2024, costing $1.28 billion. Mill closures in Savannah, Riceboro, and Cedar Springs haven’t helped. The proposed tax cut would cost the state $18 million annually, but local governments would be reimbursed. Clint Mueller of the Association County Commissions of Georgia says counties reliant on timber need this industry to survive. If two-thirds of the legislature approves, voters will decide in November. Meanwhile, Gov. Brian Kemp’s budget proposal includes $14 million to boost timber tech in industries like auto manufacturing. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Kia Mall of Georgia - GCPL Passport STORY 4: Norcross man arrested after disturbance at Social Security Office Gwinnett County Police arrested a Norcross man last week after back-to-back disturbances at two different locations. It started on Jan. 14 at the Social Security office on Shackleford Road. Witnesses told police that 65-year-old Robert Burke was yelling, making threats, and hurling insults—right in front of kids, no less. Employees said this wasn’t his first outburst there. Someone even had video, which helped officers identify him. But by the time they arrived? Burke was gone. An arrest warrant for disorderly conduct was issued, and, well, it didn’t take long to find him. The very next day, Jan. 15, police were called to a Courtyard Marriott in Duluth for—you guessed it—another disturbance involving Burke. No one was hurt in either incident, but the investigation’s still ongoing. STORY 5: Millender's three-point play in final seconds lifts No. 21 Georgia past Missouri 74-72 Marcus “Smurf” Millender stole the show Tuesday night, dropping 18 points and sealing No. 21 Georgia’s 74-72 win over Missouri with a clutch three-point play in the final 5.5 seconds. Missouri thought they had it when Jacob Crews nailed a wild, off-balance three with 21 seconds left, putting them up 72-71. But Millender—just 5-foot-11 and coming off the bench, as always—drove hard to the rim, took the hit, and somehow got the layup to fall. Oh, and he sank the free throw too. Crews had one last shot at the buzzer, but his deep three clanged off. Georgia, who usually lights up the scoreboard (96 points per game!), struggled offensively, shooting just 36.9%. Jeremiah Wilkinson added 14 points, and Kannon Catchings chipped in 12. Up next: Georgia heads to Texas on Saturday, while Missouri hosts Oklahoma. BRAVES: Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones are headed to Cooperstown, two center fielders who dominated their eras with a mix of power, speed, and jaw-dropping defense. Born just a day apart in April 1977, they’ll now share the stage at the Hall of Fame induction on July 26. Beltrán, in his fourth year on the ballot, finally crossed the 75% threshold, earning 84.2% of the vote. Jones, in his ninth year, got 78.4%. Both had to climb uphill—Beltrán’s path clouded by the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal, Jones’ by a slow start in Hall voting (just 7.3% in 2018). Beltrán, a nine-time All-Star, hit .279 with 435 homers and 1,587 RBIs over 20 seasons. He was a postseason monster, batting .307 with 16 homers in 65 playoff games. “The Mets are a big part of my identity,” he said, though his career spanned stints with Kansas City, Houston, St. Louis, and others. Jones, meanwhile, was a defensive wizard, winning 10 Gold Gloves and smashing 434 homers. He’s now the sixth Braves legend from their 1990s dynasty to make the Hall, joining Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Chipper, and McGriff. We’ll be right back. Perry Partain was raised in the L'Anguille River bottoms of East Arkansas, tagging along with his Depression-era grandfather on squirrel hunts and growing up in a time when ducks were abundant, unpressured, and limits could be taken without a duck call or a single decoy.Fast forward 40 years, and the world he knew has changed almost beyond recognition. In this episode, Partain offers a steady, clear-eyed look at what's happening in Arkansas's public flooded timber, what's driving the decline, what's being misunderstood, and what practical steps could help turn things around.>>>Thanks to our sponsors: Tom Beckbe, Lile Real Estate, Perfect Limit Outdoors, Purina Pro Plan, Sitka Gear, Greenhead: The Arkansas Duck Hunting Magazine, Noah Perry-Raymond James, and Ducks Unlimited.Send us a textAll Rights Reserved. Episode 163 – Missing In The ForestArsenal leave the City Ground with a point, but not without frustration. In this episode of The Non-Negotiables Podcast, the panel break down a goalless draw that felt defined by control, territory, and chances that never quite turned into goals. The conversation begins with Mikel Arteta's selection choices, rotation decisions, and how Arsenal approached a Nottingham Forest side set up to sit deep and limit space. From there, attention turns to the pattern of the game itself — early pressure, sustained dominance, and a growing sense that the first goal was becoming increasingly important.Missed chances become the central theme, with detailed discussion around key moments in both halves, decision-making in the final third, and whether Arsenal's attacking structure is giving the right players the right types of opportunities. The panel also assess individual performances, physical match-ups, and how certain moments shaped the rhythm and confidence of the side.Focus then shifts to the midfield balance, exploring the roles of Rice, Ødegaard, and Zubimendi, and whether Arsenal's current setup is providing enough fluency, control, and threat against low-block opponents. There's also reflection on substitutions, game management, and how fine margins can quietly define results like this.Beyond the Forest match, the episode widens out to the bigger picture — Arsenal's scoring output, historic context around title-winning teams, and what separates very good sides from truly elite ones. Despite the frustration on the night, rival results mean Arsenal extend their advantage at the top of the Premier League, prompting a broader discussion about mentality, pressure, and navigating a title race.Part two features a full Whip Around the Grounds from Matchweek 22, VAR decisions that dominated the weekend, and a look ahead to Arsenal's upcoming Champions League trip to Inter Milan, including selection questions and fitness considerations.Chapters:(00:00) - Arteta's Non-Negotiables Intro(00:51) - Nottingham Forest Setup, Rotation & Selection Debate(02:42) - Missed Chances Theme & Early Frustration(04:17) - Zubimendi Decision-Making & Wasteful Moments(06:11) - Gyökeres vs Murillo & Physical Limits(08:50) - Second-Half Pressure & Rice's Poor Contact Volley(09:54) - Saka Header & Goalkeeper Save(10:37) - Set-Piece Chances & Merino Blocking Gabriel(11:39) - Handball Shout, VAR Frustration & Perspective(13:21) - Arteta Substitutions & Game Management(16:48) - Midfield Balance, System Issues & Tactical Fit(20:30) - Ødegaard Form, Captaincy & Physical Games(25:42) - Rice vs Ødegaard Axis & Structural Questions(28:11) - Eze Debate & Timber at Left-Back(29:18) - Arsenal's Scoring Problem & Historic Context(30:46) - Top-End Talent Debate & Title Ceiling(32:20) - Mentality vs Margins Discussion(37:08) - The Champions Difference & Elite Match Winners(39:34) - Recruitment Philosophy & Building Champions(41:41) - Match Stats, xG & Defensive Control(43:26) - Part Two Intro & Zinchenko Joins Ajax(45:15) - Whip Around the Grounds – Matchweek 22(52:42) - VARse: Manchester Derby, Anfield & North London(01:00:26) - Studio Debate & Weekend Fallout(01:01:01) - Champions League Context & Inter Milan Preview(01:05:29) - Havertz Fitness, Rotation & Forward Options(01:10:50) - Closing Thoughts
Ajax verspeelde een 2-0 voorsprong tegen Go Ahead Eagles (2-2). Considering using mass timber for the first time? IMEG's Robert Norton provides key considerations in this episode of The Future Built Smarter. A senior structural engineer working out of IMEG's San Francisco office, Robert has more than a decade of experience designing with mass timber. He says the material is more than a trend—it transforms how a building is experienced. “Being in a wood building makes you much more comfortable. The wood provides a lot of warmth and it feels homier.” Mass timber also changes how a building is designed and constructed, he adds. “It becomes part of the architecture.” Unlike steel or concrete buildings, where beams are often hidden behind ceilings, mass timber showcases every structural component. “Everything you do as an engineer is on display. All the connections, all the columns, the beams, the floor systems—they're visible for people to either enjoy or not enjoy, depending on how well of a job you do.” This emphasis on exposure means early collaboration is critical. “We really want to be as integrated as possible with the architect and engineers, so when we do get drawings from the fabricator for the mass timber panels, it's definitely ready to be installed.” Robert's team has also developed specialized connections. “Most of those off-the-shelf connections don't work, so we've done a handful of specialized details that create that really seamless look in the building.” Thanks to its prefabricated panels, mass timber also speeds up construction,. “The mass timber product is assembled in pieces that come to the site and are dropped in place. You're saving up to 30 percent off your schedule just in the floor system alone.” The material also is highly sustainable, having much less embodied carbon than steel or concrete, he adds. And contrary to widely-held misconceptions, mass timber is fire-retardant. Unlike typical framing lumber, Robert says, “mass timber chars on the outside, forming a protective layer that insulates the core. That allows us to meet one-hour, two-hour, and even higher fire ratings—often without additional fireproofing.” While upfront costs can be higher with mass timber, early planning can help overcome that, Robert says. “If you have designed for steel or concrete and then ask the team to ‘convert it to mass timber,' you will almost certainly see a 25 percent to 30 percent cost premium. That's the wrong way to approach it. To make mass timber competitive, it needs to be part of the project from day one. Doing that, you're going to find the mass timber prices really drop dramatically.”

Overview The buildings and construction sector accounts for approximately 37% of global carbon emissions (UNEP). According to the UN Environmental Programme, much of this impact is derived from the operational aspects of buildings including heating, cooling, and lighting. However, building materials and their production also play a major role. Construction materials include cement, steel, and aluminum. Timber and wooden materials play a major role as well. According to Plantd co-Founder Josh Dorfman, “The global economy produces and transports 4.1 gigatons of concrete, 1.9 gigatons of steel, and 0.8 gigatons of timber products every year.”The UK Green Building Council highlights that timber harvesting (logging) can be conducted with varying degrees of sustainable forest management, “from clear-cutting to regenerative forestry.” While the timber industry has been focusing on more sustainable practices, the process often leads to soil erosion, habitat loss, negative impacts on the water cycle, and potential harm to indigenous communities. Further, trees can take several years to grow and harvest. What is Plantd?Plantd, a startup dedicated to creating sustainable construction materials, seeks to solve this issue. The company has developed its own material: a grass species similar to bamboo and sugarcane with high fiber strength embedded into the plant itself during growth. The plant can grow on large plots of land, is ready for harvesting two to three times per year the year after it is planted, and is not subject to wildfire in the way that forests are. When the plant is harvested, the fiber can be extracted and reoriented to create a wood-like product according to different specifications with an electric press invented by Plantd. It is fully certified as a durable construction material, meeting both strength and moisture requirements. According to Plantd CEO Nathan Silvernail, “ if you take a timber-based material and you fully submerge it in water to the point where it can no longer take on any more water and you dry it out and you strength test it, it loses 70% of its strength. Our material under the same exact conditions and exposure loses only 1% of its strength.” Ultimately, with the new natural material and more efficient press, Plantd hopes to develop construction materials that are far more cost-effective and scalable. Potential DrawbacksIn order to overcome potential dubious consumers and encourage widespread adoption of their product, Mr. Silvernail is optimistic that the company will attract buyers with a lower price point for the product. According to Mr. Silvernail, “ Our bottom line is not counted in dollars. It's counted in tons of CO2 captured. I tell all of our investors that. So we are not sitting here trying to just make the biggest margins we can. We're trying to make an impact. And again, the only way that I'm gonna do that is through price and volume.” Mr. Silvernail also hopes that the government can subsidize costs for buyers to buy their carbon-negative product, allowing it to penetrate the longstanding foothold of the traditional timber industry over construction. However, many government programs aimed toward assisting sustainable companies are being cut, presenting a potential challenge for Plantd to build its market and appeal to consumers. Further, once Plantd is able to encourage demand for their product, their biggest challenge is scaling to meet demand. While they are sold out at the moment, the company is working to optimize their build processes to create enough panels to eventually sell in stores for home builders. About our guestEntrepreneur and engineer Nathan Silvernail is the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Plantd Materials. While working at SpaceX, he led the team that built life support systems for astronauts aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft, and made history by building the first payload fairing recovered from space and reused on a later mission. In addition to his work at SpaceX, Nathan founded a company that designed, built, and flew reduced gravity experiments onboard NASA's zero gravity simulation aircraft. He has received recognition for his work in the industry, including the Emerging Space Leaders Grant and the First Suborbital Research Flight with Virgin Galactic.ResourcesBuilding Materials And The Climate: Constructing A New Future, UN Environmental ProgrammePlantd Raises $10M, Pioneering Carbon-Negative Building Materials, ForbesEmbodied Ecological Impacts: Timber, UK Green Building CouncilFurther ReadingPlantd MaterialsPlantd Raises $22M to Scale Carbon-Negative Materials and Transform Waste Stream Into New Market GrowthFor a transcript, please visit https://climatebreak.org/plantd-with-nathan-silvernail/.
