Three hours of high drama, recorded live at Nowadays in New York. We know what you're thinking: why did it take so long to get Binh on the RA Podcast? There's no easy answer, especially given that he's been a favourite of ours for over a decade now. So to make up for lost time, the revered digger lands on the series with a tantalising three-hour mix, recorded live at Nowadays in New York earlier this year. Crammed with rare and unreleased gems spanning house, techno, and electro, RA.989 is heavy on drama, catching the Düsseldorf native in unbridled performance mode. This is Binh in 2025. But rewind across the past two decades and you'll find a DJ who excels in pretty much any situation, whether warming up for Zip or Margaret Dygas, going back-to-back with masters like Nicolas Lutz or rolling out solo sets that stretch across ten or even 12 hours. He's acted out all these scenarios most often at Berlin institution Club der Visionaere, the cosy canalside club that became a kind-of spiritual home. (He'd sometimes spend every night of the week there, before parenting duties got the better of him.) To play for half a day you need a lot of records, and the backbone of Binh's craft has long been a freakish passion for vinyl. Along with Lutz, Vera, and others in CDV's orbit, he approaches the pursuit of wax, new and old, with next-level dedication and a fondness for blind buys. That's true of RA.989, although among the un-Shazamables are many tracks that are either out or coming out on Binh's popular Time Passages label. The mix finds him on a house-y tip, luxuriating in roomy basslines, driving 303s and twinkly melodies—with just the right amount of evil. Lock in and savour a one-of-a-kind DJ, completely in the zone. @binh Find the interview at ra.co/podcast/989

Latvian duo Taran & Lomov present 'Semper Supra' – their debut LP on their own label Amber Muse; a refined and accomplish long player that showcases the tip of an iceberg patiently built across two dedicated and long-spanning careers in the music industry. Together, the pair have managed to earn the coveted stripes of 'jack of many, master of many' across a fruitful and symbiotic 20 years. They've turned their hands to promotion, production, remixing, radio hosting, music journalism and DJing. At this point, they have a gilded resume that includes support for their releases from the likes of Jane Fitz and Laurent Garnier, releases on W&O Street Tracks, Josh Wink's Ovum Recordings and Dense & Pika's Kneaded Pains as Queer On Acid and of course – their basecamp – the Amber Muse Radio show. Musically, 'Semper Supra' is a genre-flexing trip with its roots in early 2000s Minimal and late 90s Electronica. 9 tracks bearing flecks of influence from labels like Time Passages, Perlon and Warp as well as artists such as Black Dog, Metamatics, Binh and Jan Jelenik meld in a head-twisting brew - one that caters to listeners on any point in the spectrum between after-hours raver to armchair astronaut. The glue in the record is the subtly haunting energy omitted by the synths, sweeps and atmospherics that course through the album. The spectral glow these conjure hangs gently over a variety of bpms and intensities, keepings things suffused in a dubby fog that gives a living, breathing sense of space and atmosphere. Case and point being 'Nano Crab' - a patient, frosty recording that stacks energy in subtly folding layers of mangled, otherworldly signals and primal rhythms. 'Slow East' follows up with a skeletal Electro track that oozes with an ominous mood often clocked in Nicolas Lutz's extended sets. The warped robotics and cold sonics of 'Slickers' are given life and mobility via groove and clever sequencing while 'Corp' whips up into a more frenzied zone. Alarm tones burnt and bit crushed while drums move with the sort of urgency required for boiling point dance floors before the title track provides an allaying landing pad as it scatters pin-prick melodies across a wide, icy soundscape. ambermuse.com/taran-lomov-bio facebook.com/TaranLomov ra.co/dj/taranlomov soundcloud.com/ambermuse facebook.com/AmberMuseRec instagram.com/ambermuserec

Like far too many people across the world, Kyle Henry was forced to spend his mother's last days communicating from behind screens and PPE as the COVID-19 pandemic raged. But Henry — a prolific filmmaker and associate professor at Northwestern University — also saw an opportunity to shine a light on dementia, caregiving, and his own relationship with his mother. His film “Time Passages” stands as a tribute not just to one family struggling with the impending loss of a matriarch, but to all the caregivers and people living with dementia who have traveled similar paths. Al Stewart came to stardom as part of the legendary British folk revival in the sixties and seventies and developed the combination of folk-rock songs with delicately woven tales of the great characters and events from history. He has 19 studio albums between “Bedsitter Images” in 1967 and “Sparks of Ancient Light” in 2008, plus the live album "Uncorked" with Dave Nachmanoff in 2009. He is perhaps best known for his hits ‘Year of the Cat” from the Platinum album of the same name and the Platinum follow up album “Time Passages.” But his career spans four decades as a key figure in British music. He played at the first ever Glastonbury Festival in 1970, worked with Yoko Ono pre-Lennon and shared a London apartment with a young Paul Simon.

In this episode, Meo breaks down the basics of an astrological birth chart, including the houses, what they represent, how it's all a journey for us from birth to death, and what each of the planets represent when they show up in the houses of your chart. Join us for a casual tour through the magic of the zodiac and the energies of the planets that all work together to create the blueprint of YOU in this life. Meo uses several friends' charts (including Shannon's eeek) to give examples of how the planetary placements in the houses and alignments with each other create fascinatingly accurate descriptions of personality, interests, and life experiences. Easy astrology apps to use include: Co-Star Astrology, Astro Futures, and Time Passages. To access a free natal birth chart, check out cafeastrology.com and use the "Free Reports and Calculations" feature. You'll need your birthdate, birth time to the minute, and location of birth for an accurate birth report. This is a great place to start understanding your astrological blueprint, but keep in mind, it's just a framework to start from. Since it's computer generated, there will be some contradictions that occur - it's always a more thorough and accurate experience to have a trained astrologist run and interpret your chart for you! Al Stewart is widely known for Year of the Cat and Time Passages, but he has given the world so much more: Al taught us about the complexities and pitfalls of love; Al introduced us to interesting historical figures such as Nostradamus whose only book, first published in 1555, still captivates us today; and Most importantly, Al taught Paul Derringer enough about World War II to get him through high school history with a solid B. In this episode, The Derringer Brothers take you on a journey that goes beyond Al's big hits.  They connect Al to Kurt Vonnegut and Slaughterhouse Five.  They play snippets of Al's epic Love Chronicles featuring Jimmy Page and Jon Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin.  They even discuss the 450 year-old saying "All is Fair in Love and War" while tying it to a classic Al Stewart song. Will you be entertained? Hopefully, yes! Will Dave Derringer agree with any of Paul Derringer's Top 10 picks or will they need to invoke Dave Mason's We Just Disagree? Listen up and find out! Lipsitz is an intellectual pioneer and respected figure of the Black freedom movement.  Insight from this episode:Questions we must ask ourselves about self definition as the Black freedom struggle and crisis of the current movement passes to another stage. A reframing of “white allyship” and “white fragility” in the context of George Lipsitz’s scholarship on the possessive investment in whiteness. Details on the coordinated crimes of the Pentagon, Wall Street, and the police, specifically the connection between violence abroad and violence “at home.”A call to move beyond symbolic victories when structural changes are needed. Reflections from George Lipsitz on teaching in the prisons and the deeply cynical but astute critics he met there. A behind-the-scenes look at the origins of both Dr. West’s Race Matters and Professor Rose’s Black Noise.  Quotes from the show:“There’s a lot of spinelessness that goes with the polarization and gangsterization of our society. We need people to stand up. Not because they can do it alone, but rather because by doing it, they can inspire others to do it. And so we get enough folk [...] to create countervailing structures, countervailing institutions, along with the countervailing voices and the countervailing examples of the kind of decay and decadence we’re dealing with in the U.S. environment.” –Dr. Cornel West The Tight Rope Episode #11“It’s important for us to make sure we develop the courage and the clarity and the conviction to move the struggle along. This is a hard time for lovers of freedom. This is a hard time for lovers of social justice. This is a hard time for lovers of decency and dignity of humans. But the table is shaking, and the boat is rocking. We have meaningful work to do.” –George Lipsitz The Tight Rope Episode #11“It’s too easy to think about saving white souls or soothing white psyches and neglecting saving Black lives.” –George Lipsitz The Tight Rope Episode #11“You can’t have decent relations when the structure in which you’re operating is already a rigged game, is already meant that one party to this relationship has the power of denying, condescension, pity, and sympathy and the other person is scrambling for rights, recognition, and resources. So first of all it has to be about power and not just about prejudice.” –George Lipsitz The Tight Rope Episode #11On the leadership of the current Black freedom movement: “What we have today are people who are proud to be themselves. These queer, transgender, non-normative young people on the streets of Ferguson and elsewhere are resisting ruinous form of classification and insisting on an expansive and democratic notion of affection, sexuality, romance but also social membership. We have to applaud that. On the other hand, good intentions and spontaneity is not going to be enough in the face of a relentlessly oppressive and powerful, well financed, military, economic, and political system.” –George Lipsitz The Tight Rope Episode #11 “Many will be seduced and bribed into thinking that if they’re visual their politics are viable.” –George Lipsitz The Tight Rope Episode #11On institution building and making bridges for people: “This happens because people choose to take their time and put that kind of energy into each other.” –Tricia Rose The Tight Rope Episode #11“If we get too preoccupied with these symbolic gestures, they do become distractions. And the status quo says, you know what, you all change the monuments you want, but the class hierarchy, the gender-based hierarchy, the imperial hierarchy is just going to stay right in place.” –Dr. Cornel West The Tight Rope Episode #11“It’s hard to think of any human being who really deserves a monument.” –Dr. Cornel West The Tight Rope Episode #11“The monuments become monuments to ideas, and monuments to power relationships, to celebration of domination.” –Tricia Rose The Tight Rope Episode #11 Stay Connected:Cornel WestWebsite: www.cornelwest.comTwitter: @CornelWestFacebook: Dr. Cornel West - HomeInstagram: @BrotherCornelWest Linktree: Cornel West  Tricia RoseWebsite: www.triciarose.comLinkedIn: Tricia RoseTwitter: @ProfTriciaRoseFacebook: Tricia RoseInstagram: @ProfTriciaRoseYoutube: Professor Tricia Rose  George LipsitzUCSB Webpage: George LipsitzBooks on Amazon: George Lipsitz The Tight RopeWebsite: www.thetightropepodcast.comInstagram: @thetightropepodTwitter: @thetightropepodFacebook: The Tight Rope Pod This episode was produced and managed by Spkerbox Media in collaboration with Podcast Laundry.

What the Riff?!?
1978 — September: Boston “Don't Look Back”

What the Riff?!?

Back in 1976 Boston took the rock world by storm with their debut, and largely self-produced, album.  This highly anticipated second album made its appearance two years later, a span of time which would in retrospect be considered quite fast - no other Boston album would appear for eight years.  Don't Look Back was originally entitled "Arrival," until the band discovered that ABBA had already released an album with that name.  Guitarist and producer Tom Scholz considered the album to be rushed out by the record label, and believed it was too short and needed another song.  This would begin a multi-year legal battle with Epic Records that would eventually be settled in Boston's favor, but it would also be “a long time” until their third album was released, by which time only Scholz and front man Brad Delp were the only original band members in the lineup. The album was released in August and sold over four million copies in its first month, eventually being certified 7x platinum by the RIAA.  As with their first album, virtually every song will be familiar, as all received significant airplay on rock stations everywhere beyond the three singles released from the album.Join us as we explore this iconic album and the events of September 1978. Don't Look BackThis lead song is an iconic staple from the rock era.  It has a positive, future oriented feel to it.  It is the first song on the album and the first single released.  It was one of the most successful songs they released.  "I finally see the dawn arriving.  I see beyond the road I'm driving."  "The sun is shining, and I'm on that road."The JourneyIf it sounds like Don't Look Back is cut off on the radio before the song concludes, that's because there is no break on the album between it and The Journey.  This ethereal instrumental track transitions between the lead song and "It's Easy." Scholz considers this his favorite song, and wanted it to be longer on the album. It's EasyThis is a deeper cut from the album, and was not released as a single at the time.  "It's easy taking it day by day."A Man I'll Never BeThere's a big difference between Don't Look Back, the first single from the album, and A Man I'll Never Be, the second single.  This song is more pensive and less self-assured than the opening track, and presents a nice bookend to the first side of the album.  "If only I could find a way I'd feel like I'm the man you think I am.  And its getting harder every day for me to hide behind this dream you see a man I'll never be."  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from “WKRP In Cincinnati”Hugh Wilson created this comedy based upon his experience working at pop radio station WQXI in Atlanta. STAFF PICKS:She's Always A Woman  by Billy JoelBruce features the fourth single from Billy Joel's biggest hit album - The Stranger.  It was written for his wife Elizabeth Weber.  She had taken over management of Joel's career, and took a lot of grief from her adversaries in negotiation for being "unfeminine."  But Joel says here, "she's always a woman." She apparently got Joel's finances back on track.Song on the Radio by Al StewartWayne brings us a surprisingly chill staff pick.  This is from Al Stewart's eighth studio album, “Time Passages,” produced by Alan Parsons.  Wayne mentions that this is a cruising song on a hot summer night.  Stewart refers to his style as creating songs as cinema.Life's Been Good   by Joe WalshRob's staff pick is an autobiographical piece from Eagles alumnus Joe Walsh off his album “But Seriously, Folks.”  Like many of his songs, Walsh doesn't take himself too seriously in this song.  He had a house in Beverly Hills, but he was never there.  The line about “tearing out the walls,” references a real life incident in a hotel with Keith Moon.Miss You  by The Rolling StonesBrian finishes off our staff picks with a Rolling Stones piece from their disco days, though they referred to it as "R&B."  But Charlie Watts (drummer) embraced the disco setting.  Billy Preston was riffing on the bass guitar one evening after Bill Wyman had left for the day, and Mick Jagger encouraged Wyman to play in Preston's style. LAUGH TRACK:The Thanksgiving Episode from "WKRP in Cincinnati"WKRP in Cincinnati came to an end in September, 1978, so for our Laugh Track we feature one of the most well-known episodes...  “As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.”

2018 has been one wild trip around the sun. The onslaught of political news alone has been overwhelming, let alone the personal shifts and changes we all experience. There are many ways to approach a retrospective. In this final episode of the year, The Leftscape honors well-known and lesser known people who had an impact on the world, passed in 2018, and whose lights still shine. Anthony Minson Wendy Sheridan begins the conversation by remembering Anthony Agabatt Minson - a craftsman, a powerful worker of magick, and a true friend to all three co-hosts. Wendy, Mary, and Robin share memories and healing laughter. As The Leftscape was recorded live this week in Wendy's home, it was extra touching that gifts "Batt" had made over the years were all around the room. Pete Shelley Robin Renée spoke of Pete Shelley, lead vocalist of the profoundly influential band the Buzzcocks and solo performer of the iconically queer "Homosapien." Cicely Berry Mary McGinley remembered and praised the innovations of John Barton and Cicely Berry, co-founder and voice director, respectively, for the Royal Shakespeare Company.   Ntozake Shange Others we lost in 2018 include Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, and Mort Walker in comics, brilliant theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, Apollo astronauts Alan Bean and John Young, CSS design team member Cindy Li, UN diplomat Kofi Annan, politician John McCain, writers Ursula K. Le Guin and Ntozake Shange, activist David Stroh Buckel, journalist Jamal Khashoggi, playwright Neil Simon, celebrities/performers Penny Marshall, Burt Reynolds, Anthony Bourdain, Tab Hunter, Aretha Franklin, XXXTentacion, Mac Miller, and Delores O'Riordan, and gorillas Koko and Nico. These are just a sampling of the many from pop culture, arts and sciences, and elsewhere who are recognized in the show. Explore the Wikipedia entry on notable people who died in 2018 to learn more about their lives and contributions. The week's celebrations include Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, and the birthdays of Henry Miller, Steve Allen, Gregg Wayans, Lars Ulrich, and David Sedaris. In shocking news, Men's Health reports that Keith Richards is finally on the wagon. Astrologer Dawn Champine (Goddesstrology on Twitter) joins us today for a more in-depth conversation about manifesting with the moon. In Podcast 113, I talked about this for the first time, then we followed some lunar cycles into the 2017 total eclipse. I crossed paths with Dawn via Twitter, and she helps us take a much deeper dive on all things lunar – new moons, full moons, the path of the moon, and lunar nodes. If you want to take your manifesting game up a notch, this will be a great podcast to help your awareness of how much the moon affects us…much more than we think if we are unconscious to it.This is an especially important conversation with the upcoming full moon on September 24, 2018 being “heavily aspected.” What that means is the energy has, once again in 2018, been excessive. We talk about how that can affect us as we approach full moons. Even though you many not hear this around that full moon, when things in the sky are “wonky,” it's worth being aware!Dawn does private sessions and can be contacted both from her website and Twitter:https://www.manifestingwiththemoon.com/Tweets by Goddesstrology Astrology Apps Mentioned: Time Nomad – https://timenomad.app/Time Passages – https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/timepassages-pro/id483241160?mt=8The post Podcast 160 – Moon Astrology and MORE with Dawn Champine! appeared first on Subconscious Mind Mastery.
