Whether it's on the first two BOSTON albums or on releases by his latest group, BARRY GOUDREAU'S ENGINE ROOM, guitarist BARRY GOUDREAU brings the world a soaring, blues-inflected sound that has been part of our collective musical psyche ever since he threw down the monster lead on Boston's 1977 rock radio smash, “Foreplay / Long Time.” I was thrilled to have Barry not only visit us backstage at a recent JEFFERSON STARSHIP gig I played in Beverly, Massachusetts — where Barry plugged in his beloved '60s Gibson SG Junior and did this interview (during which, as you'll hear, he discusses everything from working with Boston's brilliant mastermind/chief composer and multi-instrumentalist/producer TOM SCHOLZ to collaborating with the late, great Boston singer BRAD DELP to creating music with his other bands, including RTZ, ORION THE HUNTER, and, of course, the Engine Room) — but also have Barry sit in with us on stage! That's right: During our encore later that night, Barry joins us for an extended jam where he starts off with a big solo, and then we trade licks back and forth, and you'll hear it all go down at the end of the episode. Thanks to GUITAR PLAYER and guitarplayer.com for bringing this episode to you. “Guitar Player — Play better, sound better!” — JUDE GOLD, host/creator, NO GUITAR IS SAFE

We've been doing this show for almost 7 years and we're finally doing series of episodes on that much maligned and much beloved genre… ‘70s rock! This week, we have classic interviews with the likes of Brad Delp, the phenomenal lead singer of Boston, who we lost far too soon. Delp talks about his humble beginnings as well as the obsessive leader of the group, Tom Scholz. We also have some great clips from the Doobie Brothers. One is from their mid-‘70s heyday, one is with Michael McDonald – and then we have Tom's 2018 conversation with guitarist Patrick Simmons. And there's a very good reason you haven't heard this interview sooner… but it's an embarrassing one (for Tom)! Also, Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull talks about the very funny origin of the band's name and the story behind their first hit And we take care of business with one of the most popular bands in Canadian history - BTO! And Christopher talks about one of the greatest musical experiences of his life – and it happened just a few weeks ago! Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. It is in the Top 20% of worldwide podcasts based on the number of listeners in the first week.
Talan er um rock and roll og harðrokk. Frammanundan hevði bólkaleiðarin, Tom Scholz, tikið tað mesta av tónleikinum upp í kjallaranum heima og spælt tey flestu ljóðførini sjálvur, tó ikki trummur og forsang. Hann byrjaði síðst í trýssunum at manna ein bólk, sum hann kundi trívast við, men alt riggaði ikki, sum hann ætlaði. Tí vóru tað næstin ongir aðrir tónleikarar enn hann sjálvur, sum spældu við á endaligu upptøkunum, ið gjørdar vóru til fyrstu Boston plátuna.
Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Tom Nichols. Tom is a staff writer at The Atlantic and author ofThe Death of Expertise: The Campaign against Established Knowledge and Why it Matters, with a new second edition out soon. Find him on X/Twitter at@RadioFreeTom. Tom's Music Pick: BostonThis could be our first episode that is longer simply by listening to the entirety of the band's actual discography. Even if true, we still think you should choose Political Beats!Boston is an unusual band, sui generis in many ways. To begin with, Boston is really one guy: Tom Scholz. Okay, Okay, he probably couldn't pull this off without the voice of Brad Delp. And our guest is quick to point out Sib Hashian has some nice moments on drums on the Boston debut album. But Scholz wrote nearly all the songs, he developed the guitar sound, he spent years in his basement perfecting that debut album. And what a debut it was. You know every song here and all but one remain in heavy rotation on classic rock radio stations across the country. It was the biggest-selling debut in history for about a decade after its release. “More Than a Feeling,” “Peace of Mind,” “Foreplay/Long Time,” and “Hitch a Ride” continue to soundtrack summers annually. But what do you do for an encore? And how do you evolve that sound, if at all? These are some of the questions we kick around throughout the show. It's always a blast to be joined by a guest who actually lived through the release of some of the music we are discussing. Tom gives a needed and appreciated perspective on Boston and the impact the music had on the rock world. We'll talk until you're feelin' satisfied and are prepared to walk on to another episode. Grab your Rockman amp and plug in to Political Beats.

Rockshow Episode 185 Boston Boston is an American rock band formed in 1976 in Boston, Massachusetts. The band was founded by Tom Scholz, an MIT-educated engineer and musician, along with vocalist Brad Delp and other members. Boston is known for its distinctive sound, characterized by soaring harmonies, intricate guitar work, and a blend of rock and progressive elements. Their self-titled debut album, "Boston," released in 1976, became a massive success and is one of the best-selling debut albums in history. It included hits like "More Than a Feeling" and "Peace of Mind." The band's sound featured Scholz's innovative use of technology, particularly the Rockman amplifier, which contributed to their signature guitar sound. Boston released several more albums over the years, including "Don't Look Back" (1978), "Third Stage" (1986), and others. While they didn't match the extraordinary success of their debut, they maintained a dedicated fan base. Tragically, Brad Delp, the band's iconic vocalist, passed away in 2007. Despite lineup changes and long gaps between albums, Boston continued to tour and record new music. Their music remains a significant part of classic rock history, known for its melodic hooks and technical craftsmanship in the rock genre. https://www.facebook.com/LukeBuysVintage?mibextid=LQQJ4d Luke Buys Vintage I buy vintage band shirts. Aside from having a terrific title, the seventh studio album by REO Speedwagon would be the one which would bring them mainstream success. You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish was the first album to be co-produced by guitarist Gary Richrath and lead singer Kevin Cronin, and was the first to break into the top 40 on the Billboard 200 album charts in the US, peaking at number 29. It also was the first on which Bruce Hall was a part of the group, replacing Gregg Philbin on bass. The rest of the group was Nel Doughty on keyboards and Alan Gratzer on drums. Doughty and Gratzer were college students when the band was founded, and Doughty was inspired to create the name of the group when he saw it written on the board of his “History of Transportation” class. This album trends toward melodic rock and power ballads, which perhaps explains the broader appeal they received. Richrath's guitar hooks blended well with Cronin's strong vocals, and the result was a polished sound that worked well for both rock anthems and more pensive ballads. The energy of the studio album also seemed to finally catch the essence and energy of their live performances. The band would go on to become one of the stars of the arena rock world in the 80's, and this album is where that really started for them.Rob brings us this group at the start of their ascent to stardom. Roll with the ChangesThis infectious rock anthem leads off the album, and is a timeless staple of the band's concerts. Kevin Cronin was inspired to write this song when he returned to the band in 1976 and relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles. Changes in his life caused the song to hit him instantly. He started writing the lyrics on a paper bag in his Ford Pinto while driving to L.A.Runnin' BlindThis deeper cut is the third track on the album. It has a solid guitar riff and we believe a “Cheap Trick” sound. The lyrics discuss a lover who is always on the road playing the guitar and leaving someone behind. “Change is comin' no more runnin'”Time for Me to FlyAnother song written by Kevin Cronin, this ballad was inspired by Cronin's breakup with his high school girlfriend. Unlike “Roll with the Changes,” this song took Cronin 10 years to write, and had been rejected for previous albums. While it would peak at number 56 on the Billboard Hot 100, it would become one of their best known songs and a timeless ballad.Say You Love Me or Say GoodnightAnother deeper cut that rocks, this one closes out the album. The lyrics are a call to either make up or split up. It is a great jam to end the concert or album. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture The Magic of LassieJimmy Stewart makes his last appearance in this installment of the film franchise starring the famous collie. STAFF PICKS:Party by Boston Bruce kicks off the staff picks with the sixth track from Boston's second studio album, “Don't Look Back” This straight-up party song was co-written by Brad Delp and Tom Scholz, one of only two songs on the album not solely written by Scholz. While it wasn't released as a single, it received significant airplay on rock stations and appears on Boston's Greatest Hits album.Raise a Little Hell by TrooperWayne keeps the energy up with a rocker off Canadian band Trooper's fourth studio album. Randy Bachman produced this album entitled “Thick as Thieves.” It appears in the first season of the NETFLIX show “Stranger Things.” While not having a big hit in the US (this one went to number 59) Trooper was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2023.Hot Blooded by Foreigner Lynch brings us a monster hit written by Lou Gramm and Mick Jones. While most people with a fever of 103 would need some rest, the song describes the cure as an after-show rendezvous with the girl he's been checking out. The song did more than dance up the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 3.Runaway by Jefferson StarshipRob takes the tempo down to close out the staff picks with the second single from the album “Earth.” This song made it to number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Marty Balin takes vocal duties on this song, alternating between a smooth sound in the verses and a grittier, funky sound in the bridge. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Unidentified Flying Tuna Trot by REO Speedwagon This instrumental off “You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish” gives us the opportunity to double dip on the episode's featured album by REO Speedwagon.

VUOLA is a psychedelic rock project of a Finnish drummer, producer and studio manager Jussi Vuola. In his music there's a shimmer in darkness, a touch in space, beauty in distortion and aspiration in despair. A history of growing with Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the like is being shaped with low tunings, vibration and chanting on his concept album, based both on geometrics and syntax. The anticipated, esoteric, heavy hitting album ”Alouv” is coming out in spring 2022. "These are the fruits of the beautiful summer I spent under the sun and stars, in peace and harmony, surrounded by the people I love” — Jussi Vuola On March 17th, 2022, the first single, "Under Above Orion Venus Loves" was released. Like the rest of the forthcoming album, Jussi handles all instruments in the studio. He will take a cue from rock legend, Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and pick up the guitar and sing during live performances. "I was privileged to spend the entire summer of 2021 to write music premised on a vision that appeared to me in a dream, some time ago," said Jussi. "In August 2021, I booked my own commercial music studio for 2 weeks, to record and produce my own album, the first I've done in 10 years. I had produced, engineered, mixed, mastered, released and played on a lot of albums, and thus, given my part to the music community. This time I had the opportunity to do something completely different - for me, myself and I, only. These are the fruits of the beautiful summer I spent under the sun and stars, in peace and harmony, surrounded by the people I love. Recorded with a little help from my friends. Processed by the best professionals in the world." The second single “Laugh Vivid Often Adore Unity” was released on 20th of April 2022. It paints a picture of an unearthly reunion beyond life and gives hope to this one. It is dedicated to Vuola's sister losing her husband to cancer recently, way too early. Musically the single is an inter textual salute to the giants of the past. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page as well as Tom Scholz of Boston are credited, too. Watch the 1st video: https://youtu.be/FD_sjrKDh-MWatch the 2nd video: https://youtu.be/M5Wo8cvQ7eY All proceeds of the album will be donated to the victims of the Ukraine war during year 2022 via Unicef. The first single is now available, ahead of commercial release, on Bandcamp for the amount of your choice. ABOUT JUSSI VUOLA: Jussi Vuola has played drums since his teenage years in a variety of acts, including the Finnish bands The Grammers, Mystons, Willie & The Goodsouls and Achiote, to name a few. In 2010 he put together an analog recording studio in Turku, Finland that has become a home for a lot of acts. Hundreds of gigs around the globe, tens of albums he has played on, and hundreds of releases he has taken part of production on, have shaped him to the person he is today. Over the years, it became clear it was time for him to make a move downstage. In 2022, he is leading a talented five-piece under his own name to venues, with himself on vocals & guitar. My best known credit, so far, is co-writing the MCA multi-platinum hit single “I Need Your Love" with Tom Scholz of the band Boston. I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and grew up there and in Brazil and Colombia. All that traveling exposed me to many ethnic and popular music styles at a very early age. Music was everywhere! My musical journey has taken me from teenage garage band madness (I signed my first record contract at age 14), to busking country blues on the streets of Europe and the US, to performing with Chuck Berry, The Coasters, The Drifters, The Shirelles, Brian Highland, Cheech Marin and Little Anthony. I was also a member of Berkeleys' pop reggae band The Shakers, 50's/60's show band Johnny Baron and the Bel Aires, and a founding partner with the international touring production show Abbacadabra. My latest project is a tribute to one of my all-time heroes, the legendary blues icon Howlin' Wolf. Featuring a high energy collection of re-imagined blues classics, that also includes my autobiographical title song,“Tracking Down the Wolf." I'm currently working on an album of guitar based original blues rock songs. Stay tuned! https://www.fredsampsonmusic.com

In episode 72 of Behind The Song, Janda unpacked the history of “Foreplay/Longtime” by Boston, and the incredible story of how Boston founder Tom Scholz persevered against all odds to create the sound of Boston on his own terms. Scholz, an MIT graduate with an engineering degree, went on to form his own technology company, and created The Rockman, a portable amp that impacted the sound of rock music in the 80's and early 90's. Dive deeper into the story of Scholz and his invention in this bonus episode of Behind The Song. In 1976, Tom Scholz engineered one of the greatest capers in music history when he devised a plan to record Boston's debut album his own way, contrary to how the record label executives thought it should be done. The result was one of the best-selling albums in rock and roll history, and it all started with an instrumental track that Scholz wrote while studying at MIT years before. That track grew into “Foreplay/Longtime,” one of many hits on Boston's triumphant first album. Host Janda Lane digs into the incredible story of Boston in this episode of the Behind The Song podcast.
Leftoverture is the fourth and most commercially successful studio album by Kansas. Formed out of a complex merger between a band called Saratoga and a prog rock outfit called White Clover, Kansas takes its name from the band's state of origin, as their start was in Topeka. The band consisted of Steve Walsh (keyboards, vibraphone, vocals), Kerry Livgren (electric guitar and keyboards), Robby Steinhardt (violin, viola, vocals), Rich Williams (electric and acoustic guitars), Dave Hope (bass), and Phil Ehart (drums).Kansas had achieved some success with their first three albums, but had failed to have a hit single. As the record company began applying pressure to the band to secure a hit, Steve Walsh began to experience writers block. Much of the songwriting for Leftoverture fell to guitarist Kerry Livgren, who wrote or co-wrote all the songs on the album. On the last rehearsal day, he contributed one more song, "Carry On Wayward Son," which would become the groups first hit.The album itself continues a progressive streak established by prior albums through pieces like the multi-part, 8+ minute closing track, "Magnum Opus," but brings a more accessible commercial appeal through songs like "The Wall" and "Carry On Wayward Son." This album and the follow-up "Point of Know Return" would push Kansas into national prominence for arena tours and on the Album-Oriented Rock scene.Creative differences would eventually drive several members to split from the group in the 80's, but the band would reform by 1985 and continues to tour as of 2021. Carry On Wayward SonThe hook-laden opening track features Kerry Livgren on lead vocals. Livgren wrote the track and considered this song a continuation of the song "The Pinnacle" from their previous album. The WallNot released as a single, this introspective track is a deep cut both from a commercial and spiritual standpoint. Livgren was in the process of becoming a Christian at the time, and while not written with an overtly Christian message you sense the searching nature regardless. What's On My MindThis jam features violinist Robby Steinhardt on vocals, and has a theme of a break-up. The singer is recounting the path of the relationship. "Pardon me, my feelings are showing. I'm only saying what's on my mind."Miracles Out of NowhereThis song has Steinhardt and Livgren swapping off on lyrics. There is a mystical, fantasy feel that hearkens to their prog-rock roots. "Here I am, I'm sure to see a sign. All my life, I knew that it was mine. It's always here, it's always there, it's just love and miracles out of nowhere." And you can't go wrong ending the song with a gong! ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Charlie's Angels""Once upon a time, there were three little girls who went to the police academy." And Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith, and Farrah Fawcett-Majors would grace posters around the US for some time. STAFF PICKS:Smokin' by BostonBruce launches the staff picks with a rocking number never released as a single. Nevertheless, it is well known from Boston's debut album, as is virtually every track on that masterpiece. Brad Delp and Tom Scholz co-wrote this song as part of the "Mothers' Milk" demos from 1973. Rock 'n' Rollers by AngelWayne's tune is off the eponymously named first album by Angel. It is a straightforward rock song about attending a rock concert. Gene Simmons of Kiss discovered the band who dressed all in white. The Angel logo was made as an ambigram, so it looked the same either right side up or upside down. Roxy Roller by Nick Guilder and Time MachineRob's glam rock staff pick is from Nick Guilder, better known for "Hot Child in the City." Four versions of this song came out in 1976, this one and three from three different lead singers of the band Sweeny Todd, one of which was a teenager named Bryan Adams.Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster CultBrian's pick is famous as the song with more cowbell! Buck Dharma received a lot of criticism for this song from people who believed it encouraged suicide. In reality it was about not fearing death - not living because of being anxious about the end of life. The spirit carries on. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Magnum Opus by KansasThis double dipping instrumental is the first movement of an 8-minute epic off Leftoverture. It's subtitle is "Father Padilla Meets the Perfect Gnat." We'll just leave it there.

They had one of the top-selling debuts of all time, but that couldn't spare them from legions of critics who considered them corporate rock, emotionless radio fodder, and not even a real band. Our co-host Joe explains why, to the contrary, Boston may be one of the greatest American rock bands ever.

Episode 9 takes a look back at the career and music of Tom Scholz, Brad Delp, and their band: Boston. We discuss how Tom Scholz built Boston's first album in his homemade studio, the monster success of their first three albums, and how the band carried on after losing one of it's most important members. The discussion around Brad Delp's tragic death is pretty heavy, so just be warned about that. Otherwise, this is a celebration of a phenomenal band led by a truly innovative guitarist: Tom Scholz.

Today I sit down with one of my favorite guitar players from the Bay Area Mr Gary Pihl. Gary has been playing professionally for almost his entire life. I first saw Gary back around late 1979 when he was playing guitar in Sammy Hagar's band. Gary immediately became one of my favorite players back then with his Gibson SG Special. I must have seen Gary play in Sammy's band 10 times in and around the Bay Area. I never missed Hagar live all the way up until he joined Van Halen. After Sammy joined Van Halen Gary was asked by Tom Scholz to join Boston and he's been in the band since 1986. Gary's story is fantastic and I think you guys are really gonna dig this episode. So much great Bay Area love on this one. This episode is brought to you by Avocado Green Mattress company. Use the link https://www.avocadogreenmattress.com
Episode 15, Introduction: "SPAMP!, Rockman, and Tom Scholz' Proper World View" by Spoken Word with Electronics
Back in 1976 Boston took the rock world by storm with their debut, and largely self-produced, album. This highly anticipated second album made its appearance two years later, a span of time which would in retrospect be considered quite fast - no other Boston album would appear for eight years. Don't Look Back was originally entitled "Arrival," until the band discovered that ABBA had already released an album with that name. Guitarist and producer Tom Scholz considered the album to be rushed out by the record label, and believed it was too short and needed another song. This would begin a multi-year legal battle with Epic Records that would eventually be settled in Boston's favor, but it would also be “a long time” until their third album was released, by which time only Scholz and front man Brad Delp were the only original band members in the lineup. The album was released in August and sold over four million copies in its first month, eventually being certified 7x platinum by the RIAA. As with their first album, virtually every song will be familiar, as all received significant airplay on rock stations everywhere beyond the three singles released from the album.Join us as we explore this iconic album and the events of September 1978. Don't Look BackThis lead song is an iconic staple from the rock era. It has a positive, future oriented feel to it. It is the first song on the album and the first single released. It was one of the most successful songs they released. "I finally see the dawn arriving. I see beyond the road I'm driving." "The sun is shining, and I'm on that road."The JourneyIf it sounds like Don't Look Back is cut off on the radio before the song concludes, that's because there is no break on the album between it and The Journey. This ethereal instrumental track transitions between the lead song and "It's Easy." Scholz considers this his favorite song, and wanted it to be longer on the album. It's EasyThis is a deeper cut from the album, and was not released as a single at the time. "It's easy taking it day by day."A Man I'll Never BeThere's a big difference between Don't Look Back, the first single from the album, and A Man I'll Never Be, the second single. This song is more pensive and less self-assured than the opening track, and presents a nice bookend to the first side of the album. "If only I could find a way I'd feel like I'm the man you think I am. And its getting harder every day for me to hide behind this dream you see a man I'll never be." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from “WKRP In Cincinnati”Hugh Wilson created this comedy based upon his experience working at pop radio station WQXI in Atlanta. STAFF PICKS:She's Always A Woman by Billy JoelBruce features the fourth single from Billy Joel's biggest hit album - The Stranger. It was written for his wife Elizabeth Weber. She had taken over management of Joel's career, and took a lot of grief from her adversaries in negotiation for being "unfeminine." But Joel says here, "she's always a woman." She apparently got Joel's finances back on track.Song on the Radio by Al StewartWayne brings us a surprisingly chill staff pick. This is from Al Stewart's eighth studio album, “Time Passages,” produced by Alan Parsons. Wayne mentions that this is a cruising song on a hot summer night. Stewart refers to his style as creating songs as cinema.Life's Been Good by Joe WalshRob's staff pick is an autobiographical piece from Eagles alumnus Joe Walsh off his album “But Seriously, Folks.” Like many of his songs, Walsh doesn't take himself too seriously in this song. He had a house in Beverly Hills, but he was never there. The line about “tearing out the walls,” references a real life incident in a hotel with Keith Moon.Miss You by The Rolling StonesBrian finishes off our staff picks with a Rolling Stones piece from their disco days, though they referred to it as "R&B." But Charlie Watts (drummer) embraced the disco setting. Billy Preston was riffing on the bass guitar one evening after Bill Wyman had left for the day, and Mick Jagger encouraged Wyman to play in Preston's style. LAUGH TRACK:The Thanksgiving Episode from "WKRP in Cincinnati"WKRP in Cincinnati came to an end in September, 1978, so for our Laugh Track we feature one of the most well-known episodes... “As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.”

Henry and Mark talk about Bostons debut self-titled album Boston. A wonderful record that can be discussed for hours. Deeply listen to the record and you will see why it is their favorite classic rock record of all time. It's time to give Tom Scholz and Brad Delp the credit they deserve!
¡¡¡BUENAS VIBRACIONES !!!

This epic episode is comprised of two music icons… Boston and Elton John! Joe & Toby explore the sounds of “More Than A Feeling” and the original sample taken from Elton’s 1973 hit song. What we geek out over in this episode: Everything Elton John (a.k.a. Gary Pihl is the lead guitarist for rock trio Alliance consisting of former guest Robert Berry on lead vocals, keyboards and bass, and drummer David Lauser.Raised in the suburbs of Chicago for the first 12 years of his life, Gary Pihl relocated to the San Francisco Bay area. At 19, Gary had his recording debut with Day Blindness in 1969. He says, “After my time in Day Blindness, I was in a band called Fox with Roy Garcia and Johnny V (Vernazza), who went on to play in Elvin Bishop’s band. We were on shows with Free (with Paul Rogers), Janis Joplin, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Eric Burdon and War and Mose Allison.” Pihl’s first big break in came in 1977, when he joined Sammy Hagar’s band, where he toured and recorded for 8 years. Gary met Tom Scholz when Hagar was opening for BOSTON between ’77 and ’79. In 1985, Sammy joined Van Halen, however, Pihl didn’t miss a beat. He explains, “Tom called me up when he was working on the Third Stage album, he had one more song left to be recorded and asked me if I’d come out to work with him on it. As it turned out, I flew directly from Farm Aid (my last gig with Hagar) to Boston, so I wasn’t out of work for a day. I thought, how lucky could a guy get?” Gary's Website Facebook

The band Boston might be the most overplayed on radio.
With their self-titled debut album, Boston burst onto the stage with a sound that would come to define classic rock - "the Boston sound." Although an instant hit (it was the second best selling debut album in US history), it took several years for the demo tape to be accepted by a record label, and then would require some evasion of the label's wishes for MIT graduate Tom Scholz to be able to create the full album in his basement studio instead of taking it to Los Angeles. Driven by Brad Delp's soaring tenor vocals and Tom Scholz' work on virtually everything else, this album is a must-have in any rock lover's catalog - and that's more than a feeling! Foreplay/Long Time The instrumental prelude "Foreplay" with its distinctive triplet pattern is one of the first songs written, dating back to 1969. "Long Time" features the switch between acoustic and electric guitar that would be one of several signature features of the Boston sound. Peace of Mind This is the third single from the album. Scholz was working at Polaroid as a design engineer when he was shopping this album, and this song reflects Scholz thoughts on corporate life. Hitch a Ride This mellow track has a little bit of a hippie feel, but maintains a positive vibe that you see in the tracks on this album. The production on this track is amazing. Rock and Roll Band While this track might sound autobiographical, it is actually the opposite - it took a long time and a lot of work for Boston to get accepted. The band had never played live when the song was written. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: **Theme from "What's Happening" ** This TV show featured Dwayne, Raj, Dee, and Rerun. Hard to believe that Rerun was considered overweight by 1970s standards... **STAFF PICKS: ** “Last Child” by Aerosmith Rob's staff pick features another band from Boston, Aerosmith. Steven Tyler and Brad Whitford wrote this track for the album "Rocks", and if you listen, it has a similar sound to David Bowie's "Fame." “Devil Woman” by Cliff Richard It may have come out in August, but this is definitely a Halloween song. Cliff Richard is considered the "English Elvis," selling over 250 million records in his career. **“Afternoon Delight” by Starlight Vocal Band ** Brian's staff pick takes the tone down with this number 1 hit from the time. Starlight Vocal Band featured tight harmonies, and would parlay the song into a variety show, for which David Letterman would be a writer. “Still the One” by Orleans Bruce's staff pick also features close harmonies and a very positive take on long-term relationships. Joanna and John Hall wrote the song. Band co-founder John Hall would go on to be a congressman from New York. ***INSTRUMENTAL: * ** “Nadia's Theme” by Henry Mancini This instrumental hit was inspired by Romanian gymnast Nadia Comanici's scoring the first "perfect 10" in the 1976 Summer Olympic games.

Bill and Brian are joined by guitarist and certified luthier Mike Virok () to discuss Boston's self titled debut album (1976, Epic). Mike talks about discovering this music while his dad played side one on the tape deck while driving to his bowling league. Then Bill, Brian, and Mike get into near one-man-band Tom Scholz production, Brad Delp's important contributions as vocalist, the band's status as "corporate rock," the Real World Boston, rocking out to these songs on Guitar Hero, an elaborate scheme that resulted in a new Taylor acoustic for Delp, and more as we make our way through the album track by track! ABOUT GARY PIHL Gary does it all: guitars, work in the recording studio, live shows on the road and the architect of the band BOSTON website. He'll provide backup vocals on the 2016 40th Anniversary BOSTON tour. He has been a member of BOSTON since 1985 and is the longest recurring member of Tom Scholz' recording and touring band. GARY PIHL (pronounced "Peel") Raised in the suburbs of Chicago for the first 12 years of his life, Gary Pihl relocated to the San Francisco Bay area and has led a musical life ever since. He explains, “I was in several bands in high school. One of our guitar players told me about a guy who was really good and giving guitar lessons at the local music store. He was in a band named The Warlocks. We went to see them play at a local pizza parlor. A couple months later they changed their name to the Grateful Dead. The guitarist giving us lessons was Jerry Garcia.” At 19, Gary had his recording debut with Day Blindness in 1969. He says, “After my time in Day Blindness, I was in a band called Fox with Roy Garcia and Johnny V (Vernazza), who went on to play in Elvin Bishop’s band. We were really fortunate to get to be on some shows with bands we looked up to including opening at the Fillmore for Free (with Paul Rogers). We were on shows with Janis Joplin, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Eric Burdon and War and Mose Allison.” Gary spent four years in a band called Crossfire. He recalls, “Mitchell Froom was our organist. He’s gone on to be a great producer (Paul McCartney, The Pretenders, Los Lobos, Crowded House, Suzanne Vega, Sheryl Crow, etc.). We were opening some shows for Norman Greenbaum (Spirit in the Sky) when he was performing as a singer/songwriter on acoustic guitar. We had done our set and left the stage to Norman. He was halfway through his set when we noticed the audience was getting restless and wanted him to rock out. In the middle of one of Norman’s songs, our drummer, Steve Jones, got back on stage and started playing! Norman turned around in shock. Then he looked at the rest of us on the side of the stage and waved us up. We’d seen him about a half dozen times so we sort of knew his songs. Mitchell and his brother David (our pianist) have perfect pitch and were telling me and our bassist what the chords were as we went along. The crowd seemed to dig it and we ended the show with a rocked out version of Spirit in the Sky.” Pihl’s first big break in came in 1977, when he joined Sammy Hagar’s band, where he toured and recorded for 8 years. I was thrilled! It was a dream come true for me to work with one of the greatest bands of all time! I would have crawled on my hands and knees from California to get to work with BOSTON. As it turned out, I flew directly from Farm Aid (my last gig with Hagar) to Boston, so I wasn’t out of work for a day. I thought, how lucky could a guy get? He told me that there would probably be some touring involved if the album did well, which it did and basically I’m still here.” Tom and Gary traded studio leads on “I Think I Like It,” a high-energypower tune that showcases how well these two virtuosos complement one another. The two of them, who could pass for brothers, are a natural pair on stage. In addition to lead guitar, Gary also plays electric and acoustic 12-string guitar, keyboards, as well as lends backing and harmony vocals. photo credit Kamal Asar Gary quickly became indispensable to Tom’s BOSTON efforts. This quintessential multi-tasker has been Scholz’s right-hand man for over 20 years, serving as Vice President of Scholz Research and Development, assisting in building Tom’s Hideaway Studio II, and is a crucial part of the massive technical undertaking of managing the stage equipment on a BOSTON tour, including all of the back line and audio equipment. He also manages tech people, teaches band performers their parts, organizes rehearsals, integrates the “front of house” sound company system and personnel. Scholz wouldn’t tour without Pihl, saying, “I’d be lost without him. Gary’s the only other person on tour that has a thorough understanding of the complex audio productions systems that turn the efforts of 7 musicians and singers into the perfectly mixed stereo sound coming out the the sound system. That includes everyone, the road crew and the sound reinforcement technicians.” As Kimberley Dahme puts it, “In my opinion, he is the glue that holds BOSTON together. He works with us individually for hours on end, and assists Tom solving all of the problems that come up. He cares. I am so thankful to him, he is amazing. I don’t have enough good things to say about Gary.” Pihl is an expert professional photo editor, and did all of the editing for the graphics that were required for Corporate America as well as the remastered Boston and Don’t Look Back CD’s. He’s one of those rare people that has a gift for music and highly technical talents,” states Tom. Drummer Jeff Neal adds, ” Gary is the most consistent player out there, night after night, you can count on Gary to bring his ‘A’ game. His style is really an excellent blend of great technical ability but also wonderful feel. It ‘ s a standard that young players today should aspire to reach.” Although the majority of his talent is innate, some was acquired. Gary explains, “My dad always told me to do whatever you want, be the best you can and go to school to learn how. I reminded him that they don’t teach Rock and Roll in college but he said, ‘If you love music, then find out all you can about it.’ He took me to the local college and made me sign up. Of course once I got started, I loved it. No, they didn’t teach Rock and Roll, but it gave me a great foundation and a better understanding of music. In one of my choral classes I was sitting next to another kid out of high school just trying to learn about music. It was Johnny Colla, who went on to play sax with Huey Lewis and the News. You never know who you’ll end up sitting next to in school.” In addition to his BOSTON ventures, he still finds time to let his creative energy fly. He says, “I’ve enjoyed working with some friends on a “project band” called Alliance. It’s Dave Lauser from Sammy Hagar’s band, Alan Fitzgerald from Night Ranger, and Robert Berry from 3. It’s a mix of all our favorite styles from Blues to Prog rock.” Alliance has released three albums to date. “Robert Berry and I are also in a band called December People. We do traditional holiday songs but in the style of different rock bands. We do Joy to the World as if the Who were playing it, Santa Claus is Coming to Town like ZZ Top might play it. You get the idea. It’s a lot of fun and every show we do is a benefit for a local charity, usually a food bank.” A long-time vegetarian like the late Brad and Tom Scholz, Gary resides in a suburb of Boston with his wife and two sons. Five Things You May Not Know About Gary Pihl: 1.Award winning photographer. Someone told me that the Sonoma County Fair had an arts competition and photography was one division. I entered three of my photos and one took First Place (black and white landscape) and another placed third (kids and cows). 2. Took guitar lessons from Jerry Garcia I was a teenager when the other guitarist in my band recommended a guitar teacher in the next town who was in a band called the Warlocks. We took some lessons from him and saw his band play at Magoo's Pizza Parlor. They soon changed their name to the Grateful Dead and Jerry stopped giving lessons. 3. Mother worked in same office as Bruce Springsteen's mother. Father worked in same office as J. Geils' father. I had forgotten that my mother had worked with another mom with a teenage son who was a guitar player in the 1960s. She mentioned it years later, "Well, didn't Adele's son, Bruce, do well?". 4. Climbed to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite park at age 60. I've been to Yosemite National Park many times but never considered something as difficult as climbing the iconic peak of Half Dome until I read that there was a trail to the top. I figured I'd better do it while I still can. It was the longest and highest trek I've ever done. 5. Plays guitar with December People where we do Christmas songs in the styles of classic rock bands for food bank charities. I get together with other guys from famous bands and play songs like "Santa Claus is Coming To Town" as if ZZ Top had written it, "White Christmas" like Billy Idol's "White Wedding", etc. Lots of fun for a good cause. www.bandboston.com

Color Three are Gary Pihl (pronounced peel), Kimberley Dahme (pronounced dom) and Jeff Neal. They met as members of the rock band BOSTON and have toured together since 2003. Gary's been with BOSTON since 1985 when his former gig in the Sammy Hagar Band ended when Sammy went on to sing in Van Halen. Gary and Tom Scholz (founder and chief songwriter/producer of BOSTON) found Kimberley as a singer/songwriter and recruited her as a bass player for the band. Her poignant song, "With You", with her singing lead vocal, is a featured track on the BOSTON CD, Corporate America. Tom spotted Jeff Neal performing in a local band and was a terrific find. He's a singing drummer/songwriter in the vein of Phil Collins and Don Henley. Color Three came to be a band as a result of the three musicians' desire to perform some charity concerts and to compose, record and perform live together outside of the scope of their other bands. Their combined songwriting talents have created a uniquely original sound that blends all their former experience, from Gospel to Pop to Metal, into a melodic pastiche with three part harmony. The debut Color Three album will be released this summer. Besides the songs they've written themselves, they've collaborated with some other platinum selling songwriters like Kelly Keagy (Night Ranger), Mark Slaughter, and alt country artist, Anthony Smith. The recordings were made just the way the band performs the songs live - three instruments, three voices. Featuring a surprisingly textured sound, some listeners have described Color Three as Fleetwood Mac meets U2. WWW.COLORTHREE.COM
