IDLES are a British rock band formed in Bristol in 2009. The band consists of Joe Talbot (vocals), Mark Bowen (guitar), Lee Kiernan (guitar), Adam Devonshire (bass) and Jon Beavis (drums). A self-proclaimed 'angry band' from Bristol in Southwest England, IDLES take the fury of punk rock and wed it to a muscular but moody instrumental attack that matches the literate, purposeful menace of their lyrics. Lead singer and lyricist Joe Talbot's full-bodied ranting, in which he offers his vehement opinions on the state of British culture and his own personal issues, is matched by the rich, angular blast of the musicians, who can swing from melodic to brutally hard at a moment's notice. In this episode all songs selected by IDLES as guests for Australian TV show Rage, on Saturday June 8, 2019. Lineup: Crows, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Grinderman, The Stooges, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Heavy Lungs, Spiritualized, Queens of the Stone Age, LCD Soundsystem, Grimes, Fuck Buttons, BAMBARA, Parquet Courts, Preoccupations, Gilla Band, Death Grips, Tyler, The Creator, Pusha T, Ginuwine, Velcro Hooks, Turbowolf, Pulled Apart By Horses, Cold War Kids, LIFE, Death From Above 1979, Foals, The Futureheads, Archie Bronson Outfit, Spring King, Fontaines D.C., Metz, The Walkmen, LICE, SOFT PLAY, A Place To Bury Strangers, Beak, Death In Vegas, Arab Strap, SUUNS, TV On The Radio, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Spectres, Mogwai, Q Lazzarus, IDLES, Fugazi, DEN, Future Islands, Iggy Pop, Talking Heads, Tears For Fears, The Cure, The National, Einstürzende Neubauten, To Rococo Rot

Abdul Aziz Muhamat and Michael Green on Manus Island — (Photo: Behrouz Boochani) 'Freedom is not free. You have to pay for it. And we pay; now we are paying for our freedoms.' Abdul Aziz Muhamat Just before Christmas of 2016, Aziz is transferred to Port Moresby for knee surgery. With better phone reception, Michael and Aziz share a long phone call in which they reflect on the year that's ending, the holiday season and the months since they met face to face on Manus Island. The change in Aziz's circumstances is only temporary, but it's still a change – and the call feels like a rare break in the clouds. But just two days later – on Christmas Day – Michael hears news that Aziz's friend and fellow Sudanese detainee, Faysal Ishak Ahmed, has died. CLOT Magazine got the chance to talk to musician Robert Lippok and video artist and live performer Lillevan during 2016 edition of Unsound Festival: Dislocation (Kraków, Poland) where they were presenting Gletschermusik together with musician Askat Jetigen from Kirzystan. Robert Lippok is an avant-garde German musician and visual artist and composer which has been an influential player in Berlin’s thriving experimental music scene from a very early age, with bands like To Rococo Rot for which he is best known, while his solo work has been featured in the renowned label Raster-Noton. Lillevan an animation, video, and media artist, was a founding member of the visual and music group Rechenzentrum (1997-2008) and has performed and collaborated with many artists like Christian Fenesz and Vladislav delay Gletschermusik is a dislocated audio-visual performance that blends art, science, and folklore. It uses the sounds and images of Central Asia’s melting glaciers as a source of inspiration to promote a dialogue and raise awareness of the deterioration of the planet, climate change, and environmental problems. Retreating glaciers, rising sea levels, and shrinking lakes are some of the consequences of rising temperatures and changes in weather patterns. This is particularly important for the people of Central Asia, whose water supplies depend on the region’s glaciers. The rising temperatures, global warming and the hole in ozone layer (which luckily is beginning to close according to dr Ryan Neely, Lecturer in Observational Atmospheric Science at Leeds and will be “healed” by 2050) are the three main agents taking part in the melting of the glaciers. We talked to Robert Lippok and Lillevan over one hour about the inspiration behind Gletschermusik, how the expedition was, their experiences during the project, new ideas about what dislocation is, isolation, solitude, and loneliness. Hoping our conversations makes you reflect on the problematic issues we are facing in these challenging times and how artists can question our perception on such important matters. This podcast was produced by CLOT Magazine editorial team and Stephen Mclaughlin for Unsound Festival in Collaboration with OFF Radio Krakow. Aziz's life has been a story of chance – and choice. As Michael pieces together Aziz's journey from Sudan to Manus, he realises Aziz has been searching for a safe place for about eight years. So what gives him the ability, and the energy, to speak out? How has Aziz fought for so long, and what makes him want to be ‘the messenger'? ‘I'm pretending like I'm really happy, and laugh, and you know, smiling on the phones and doing stuff like that – so they feel like, “Oh, my son is really living in a good environment”. So they think like that, but the opposite is the truth.' Aziz Aziz tells Michael, ‘I have got some people ...waiting for me. They love me, they want me to be with them.' Haltingly, and sometimes with great difficulty, Aziz starts to share stories about his home, the family that he longs to see, and why he fled. Looking to find out more, Michael speaks to Sudan expert Anne Bartlett about the current situation there. As Aziz shares snapshots from his past, Anne talks Michael through the conflict in Sudan, which, despite leaving the headlines long ago, continues to unfold. Michael worries that he's adding to Aziz's trauma by digging up painful memories – ever aware of how hard it is to have these kinds of conversations in short, overlapping messages, without the benefit of reading someone's signals face to face. Meanwhile, Aziz weighs up how much to tell his family about Manus, and explains to Michael why he's sometimes tortured by regret. So we're already in December, and after 24 mixes of 2014 we've got exactly two more (including this one), plus a round-off with Best Vinyl of 2014 courtesy of Optic Echo Presents. But before we bid this year adieu, we've got a gorgeous mix from one of our favorite artists, Tim Martin recording under the moniker Maps and Diagrams, with his very special selection of cosmic sounds: 'Cosmic Fragments features a cosmic-inspired theme, some of the tracks date back forty-years, all the way up to the present day. Kosmiche and early electronic musical influences clearly still run deep in today's music, I think it’s a continuous movement of sound that just keeps on evolving from the days of Cluster through to bands today like To Rococo Rot and ISAN, the musical patterns haven’t altered a great deal over the years [if it's not broke…] and thankfully in today's reflections the kosmik magnetism is still consciously present. The songs I’ve included in this mix are some of my favourites from some of the most influential musicians over the years that have had a significant effect on me and my music for many years. Long live the cosmos!' For full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com
