Liz Meredith is the Coordinator of Curriculum and Director of Innovation at Rolling Hills Local Schools in rural southeastern Ohio. She has more than a decade of teaching experience in middle school science and also spent two years as a curriculum writer for the Challenger Learning Center at Wheeling Jesuit University. She continues to conduct professional development workshops for other teachers on the use of educational technology in the classroom. In 2015, she became an Apple Distinguished Educator while also receiving NSTA's Distinguished Teaching Award. This past spring she completed her dissertation on the impact of social media on educational technology integration and received her Educational Doctorate. At that time, she will also have completed her third year of teaching as a middle school science teacher in Santa Clara, CA. Ms. McCormick has also worked with other teachers part-time as an Academy of Blended Learning (ABL) assistant. Prior to becoming a teacher, Ms. McCormick completed her Bachelor of Arts in Biological Anthropology with a minor in Biology in the Honors Program at the University of San Diego in 2011. She worked in Raymond, ME, for a several years for the Raymond Waterways Protective Association, rising from Boat Inspector, to Boat Captain, and ultimately to the Acting Director of the Association. In that role, she prepared and delivered numerous educational presentations to local groups. She then returned to San Diego to work for an animal rescue organization and a private zoo, where she also participated in a variety of education outreach programs. Her love for animals and educating others eventually led her to two years as a Veterinary Technician. She was admitted to the Excel Program at Santa Clara University in the spring of 2015 and has loved teaching ever since! Better Leaders Better Schools guest Mark French has been a principal for eighteen years, the last ten of which he has spent at Rice Lake Elementary School. Since he arrived there, he has served as a role model by exhibiting compassion, enthusiasm, and a strong affinity for technology. “Mark builds strong relationships with families, staff, and community members by showing respect, treating everyone fairly, and showing that he really cares,” says parent Tammie Epley. Nine years ago, French and Epley started a program called “Students Connecting through International Service” where fifth grade students gather school supplies for Mexican students. Every year, they are taken to Sonora, Mexico to meet with pen pals and deliver the supplies in person. French is known for cooking dinner for his staff and dressing up in various costumes to amuse his students. As a veteran principal, he is well-versed in technology and uses Twitter, blogs, and email to connect with the school community. With French's encouragement, the PTO has purchased a computer lab, Chromebooks, iPads, projectors, and other technology to enhance the student learning experience. French is the president of the Minnesota Elementary School Principal's Association and was the recipient of its Division Leadership Award in 2007 and 2010.
