In this roving, wanderlustrious conversation with Devon Trevathan of Liba Spirits, some of the topics we discuss include:  Why Devon has chosen to cultivate a welcoming and mindful relationship with discomfort while traveling, and how this has allowed her to become a sponge for the sights, flavors, and sensations that make different cultures and destinations unique. A working definition of “Nomadic Distilling,” which forgoes stability and a permanent facility in favor of flexibility and the ability to sample widely from multiple ingredient streams and spirits categories. Devon's thoughts on the notion of Terroir (spoiler: she don't like it) and the ability to celebrate and mash-up different spirits traditions from around the world by embracing the role of the guest or outsider. Then, of course, we explore the Liba Spirits portfolio, including a Tyrolean gin from the Dolomites, a botanical rum from New Orleans, and a first-of-its-kind American aperitivo made with a bourbon base. Along the way, we explore the perplexingly cozy lunch habits of Austrians, wax poetic on the flavor of green ants, explain why cold brew deserves a place in your next Americano spritz, and much, much more. Featured Cocktail: Jägertee Inspired by Devon's travels in Europe, this episode's featured cocktail is Jägertee, which is an Austrian winter warmer cocktail. Is it 70 degrees here in Washington, DC as I write this? Yes. But we'll just pretend that we're having normal January weather and that the planet isn't trying to kill us. To make a batch of Jägertee you'll need: 250 ml / 1 cup tea (your choice, but I'd recommend black tea here) 250 ml / 1 cup spiced rum (Austrian Strohrum is traditional, but any will do) 250 ml / 1 cup red wine 250 ml / 1 cup plum brandy, schnaps, or any other liqueur to hand 250 ml / 1 cup orange juice 2 to 3 whole cloves 1 cinnamon stick 2 lemon slices Sugar to taste (depends on how sweet your other ingredients are) Combine all these ingredients in a medium saucepan over low-to-medium heat, warm the mixture gradually until it just begins to simmer, then cut the heat, strain out the solids (or don't…you do you), and enjoy! Jägertee means, essentially, "Hunter's tea" in Austrian. Presumably, this is because, after a long, harrowing hunt, it's pleasant to warm up with a comforting, spicy, winey brew, and NOT because the Austrains endorse consuming uppers and downers before brandishing firearms. One interesting thread to follow here is that rum is extremely popular in the German-speaking world. If you go back to my interview with Brett Steigerwaldt, you'll learn about the importance of Rum verschnitt in the early parts of the 20th century, so it's not a complete surprise to me to see a spiced or flavored rum product popping up in a traditional Austrian drink.

Yes, you got it right, I bought myself a washing machine cover, and that alone should be a disqualifying thing against me. If you saw, however, the pattern that is in the fabric, which is not fabric it is plastic, bad plastic, of this, of this contraption you would put your hands in your hair because it is as horrible as a person can imagine. You will ask excuse me, why are you so dumb? You buy something bad and then tell everyone in your podcast about it? The fact is that I am a lover of kitsch. What is kitsch?Kitsch is that thing, those things that want to be artistic and instead are terrible, very ugly, trivial, have absolutely no value. Think about the tea towels with the Mona Lisa on them, that's it, things like that.So my plastic washer cover, which by the way I had a hell of a time getting it on my washing machine, is plastic, ugly plastic of the thick kind and also hard to get in, to wear if you are a washing machine, but the funniest thing, and the one also that prompted me to make this crazy purchase for the incredible sum of 4.99€, is the designs that are in this washer cover. It's divided into many squares, many squares, and in each square there is a very realistic photograph of bread buns, rolls, ears of corn above an improbable Tyrolean wooden table, and behind it are these blue skies and these crazy views. It looks like something out of a horror movie, and it completely covers the white washing machine that we have in the second bathroom, inside some kind of shelf, so it's not like you can see that much. But when I saw it, though, it struck me in its ugliness, because that's how kitsch works with me, there are certain things that I find horrible, but so horrible that they begin to be beautiful and interesting because of their ugliness. And I've always had this thing here. Even as a young girl I used to put on strange earrings, tinsel, I do strange combinations, stripes with flowers, because evidently I have this internal compass of mine that sees things in its own way and that usually, almost never, matches what people consider beautiful and consider right to do.So now I'm enjoying my washing machine with washer cover, I haven't used it yet, meaning I haven't had to open the zips to fill the washer yet. I will tell you if it works.

South Tyrol is an autonomous, majority German-speaking region in Italy bordering Austria and Switzerland. It's one of the few places outside of Germany, Austria and Switzerland where German is an official language, alongside Italian and Ladin. But while these three languages are all recognised today, it was a difficult road to get here - the people of South Tyrol suffered some dark chapters which had awful consequences for families and communities, throwing their identity as South Tyroleans into question. In this episode I talk to Richard Bonomo, a South Tyrolean living in Vienna, about the history and language(s) of South Tyrol. We talk about the attempt to eradicate the German language and culture from this region, as well as the resulting "Option" which essentially tore the region apart. The third episode of season three took us to Tyrol, Austria where we spoke to Florian Phleps, CEO of the Tirol Tourist Board. He talked to us about how he made it into the industry, coming from a law background, the development of Tyrol, how the crisis has changed not only his day to day job but the industry as a whole and what issues need to be addressed now and in the future. He also filled us in on how Tyrol as a tourism region differs from others and what challenges and chances arise as a result. Lastly, he spoke about the importance of sustainability management in the industry and how for example the “Clean Alpine Region” project already supports Tyrolean tourism regions in implementing measures in the areas of climate protection, sustainability and energy. Many of Australia's country music stars – historically collected then dissected here by Hugh Liney and Rod Crundwell – have fascinating backgrounds. Like: Did you know Jean Stafford's father was a native Navajo American? Jimmy Little's real musical loves shine on with his gospel and country leanings rather than the ‘tosh' some people recorded with him. USC University Professor Caleb Finch is working to understand the relationships between aging, genes and the environment through his studies of ancient mummies and premodern societies. Quotes from this episode How people in ancient times may have had heart disease, currently the world’s leading cause of death:  “The oldest individual may be the Tyrolean iceman, Ötzi, as he's called, who is... 3000 BC, living in the Copper Age. And, both of his carotid arteries were calcified. He died because of a wound from a weapon. But, I think it's a conclusion that's fairly robust. Is that they're, at least in the last 10,000 years in the Neolithic area era, people have had some level of atherosclerosis. Although, it may not have been a major cause of death or disability.”  On the paradox of how the Tsimane population lives with high levels of inflammation but low levels of heart disease, even at older ages: “So, what has turned out to my cardiologist's surprise, when they actually started imaging the older Tsimane that they have almost no vascular disease, and stroke and heart attack are very rare causes of death. They're mostly...death is caused by infections, or associated with infections. And, it's a wonderful mystery as to how the rate of blood vessel aging is so much slower in this population than in North America and Western Europe. So we're studying this in terms of diet, in terms of stress, in terms of disease load, and, of course, we are looking at their individual genetics. … And, that's why the Tsimane project is so fascinating because they have lifelong high inflammation, and we all would have predicted and did that they would have had faster aging for these same diseases. But it's not the case, at least for that heart disease.” On the surprises that come with scientific research: “So, that's one of the great pleasures in science. As you put your best thoughts together and let them be challenged, looking at different varieties of lifestyle and it turns up that there are things that seem paradoxical that give deeper insights into basic mechanisms of aging.” Learn more about Professor Finch and his work at gero.usc.edu/faculty/finch

Designguide.tv visits the Vienna Design Week 2010. In this first episode we take an overview tour of some of our favorite exhibits of the festival. A large collection of italian master designers' light designs was shown at the Bulb Fiction exhibition at Klaus Engelhorn's Depot. The work of young studios such as Polka, Driftdesign and Mischer'Traxler was mixed in forming an interesting view on classic and new lighting design. The Lichtingstein Museum invited three international design teams to create an exhibition under the motto of table culture. Claesson Koivisto Rune worked with manufacturer Lobmeyer and Wiener Silber to create a simple modern product in an opulant staging. Rianne Makkink and Jurgen Bey looked into the history of sugar. And architects/designers Olgoj Chorchoj offered a flashback into one's childhood. The Freiraum at the Museumsquartier asked well known artists to produce design pieces under the label AK7. The label seeks to be active at the interface between art and design and was produced by Tyrolean craft enterprises according to classical craftsmanship techniques, to be sold at 7 pieces each. more info on www.viennadesignweek.com music by: www.undosilence.com
