When we call 911 in an emergency, we expect someone to answer our call, to send help immediately, and for emergency personnel to arrive ready and able to deliver assistance in a professional manner. First responders, police officers, firefighters, and military personnel willingly put their lives on the line for us every day, yet they are often taken for granted or abused. The danger and stress can take a toll on their mental and physical health, and they may experience depression, addiction, shattered relationships, or serious illness. The ripple effects hurt businesses, families, and communities. How can we serve those who serve us, and what types of policies would improve the quality of life for first responders and those they serve? Linda discusses this with her guest, Jeremy Wade, Founder of Mission First Alliance, an organization providing real hope and support to first responders and their families. We have five Mondays in October this year, including Halloween itself—and, in the most amazing twist of fate, our 300th episode falls on Halloween! I know some of our listeners don't like the really spooky episodes because they're too scary, especially for our younger listeners. To help people out, I'm going to rate this year's monster month episodes on a scale of one ghost, meaning it's only a little tiny bit spooky, to five ghosts, which means really spooky. This week's episode is rated one ghost, so it's interesting but won't make you need to sleep with a night light on. Before we get started, we have two quick announcements. Some of you may have already noticed that if you scroll all the way down in your podcast app to find the first episode of Strange Animals Podcast, it doesn't appear. In fact, the first several episodes are missing. That's because we actually passed the 300 episode mark several weeks ago, because of the occasional bonus episode and so forth, and podcast platforms only show the most recent 300 episodes of any podcast. That's literally the most I can make appear. However, the early podcasts are still available for you to listen to, you'll just have to click through to the website to find them. Second, we have a birthday shout-out this week! A very very happy birthday to Casey R! I hope your birthday is full of all your favorite things. Now, let's learn about the hide of South America and the blood-sucking blanket of Asia. The first mention of a creature called El Cuero in print comes from 1810, in a book called Essay on the Natural History of Chile by a European naturalist named Fr. Juan Ignacio Molina. In his book Molina wrote, “The locals assure that in certain Chilean lakes there is an enormous fish or dragon…which, they say, is man-eating and for this reason they abstain from swimming in the water of those lakes. But they are not in agreement the appearance that they give it: now they make it long, like a serpent with a fox head, and now almost circular, like an extended bovine hide.” Later scholars pointed out that the reason Molina thought the locals couldn't decide what the animal looked like was because locals were talking about two different monsters. Molina just confused them. One monster was called a fox-snake and one was the cuero, which means “cow hide” in Spanish. And it's the hide we're going to talk about. During the century or so after Molina wrote his book, folklorists gathered stories and legends from the native peoples of South America, trying to record as much about the different cultures as they could before those cultures were destroyed or changed forever by European colonizers. The hide appears to be a monster primarily from the Mapuche people of Patagonia. Most stories about the hide go something like this: a person goes into the water to wash, or maybe they have to cross the lake by swimming. The hide surfaces and folds its body around the person like a blanket,

This weeks' podcast guest is Martin Symonds. Now Martin may not be a household big carp catching name, but he is a man who coupled with his father Norman has shaped the landscape of carp fishing to the industry we see today. How? You might ask, well back in 1960's Norman brought and formed the first commercial day ticket carp fishing lake “Waveney Valley Lakes” a complex which couple with his importation/stocking of carp from Europe was the mecca of carp fishing at the time attracting anglers such as Rod Hutchinson, Lenny Middleton, Kevin Maddocks, Jack Hilton, Peter Regan, Jeremy Wade and in later years Kevin Nash and John Wilson to name but a few. The lake at the time boasted a number of 20lb+ and even 30lb+ carp spread over its six lakes which at the time was far more than all the other venues in the UK could offer put together. Martin talks about the development of the complex, his father's vision and legacy as well as the advancements that were made in the importation and rearing of carp. He also covers his experiences fishing with the big names of the time, revolutionary carp fishing developments such as the hair rig came to be used on the complex and ultimately what lead to the site being sold in 1980's. Keep your ears peeled for Martin also sharing a story about his capture at 13 years of age of a 45lb+ carp that would have claimed the British Record and why this never came to be.Martin talks in depth about his own life and how he, much like his father carved his own path. To stay Martin has had a “colourful” life would be an understatement. There's everything from hitchhiking around Canada and The USA which lead to him training with Chuck Norris to him living in Japan and becoming a very successful Koi carp farmer and now buyer. Indeed, Martins Koi business is to this very day incredibly successful with him helping many stars/rich and famous select the very best Koi to be exported all over the world. He's a gentleman who's full of character, charisma and knowledge as his career in fish farming, fishery management and general entrepreneurship shows. After the success at Waveney the family bought Homersfield lake which from a site of utter ruin has become one of the top waters in the country boasting huge carp, catfish, roach and tench. Martin discusses the stocking of this lake from its conception and how a lot of subsequent stock derived from the European fish they imported before importing fish was banned had been spread around venues far and wide across the UK. Indeed, generations later a lot of fish that are caught are no doubt derived from fish that came courtesy of Martin and his father's work. Nowadays the venue is home to Martin and his family after his fathers passing but its sure to say his father's legacy, hard work and vision lives on to this very day and testament to him carp fishing owes him a great deal. This is a fascinating look at the background of carp fishing not from just an angling perspective but the formation of a model that fisheries follow to this day.

In our 69th episode we meet Jeremy Wade - he is more than just an artist, he. Is founder and father plus mother of „Puddles the pelican“ he is a performer, musician and dancer. You probably have to find a new word for what he made his work off. Wade is an extreme performer and performance maker. His works, also incorporating curation and social practice, are disturbing and thought-provoking: they revolve around queer and feminist strategies of world making, the relational ethics of care, neo liberal critique and the violence that social norms cause on bodies of difference. Wade grew up in a mill town in Southern Maine, USA, son of two social workers. After barely graduating high school he got on a bus to NYC, there, he quickly made a name for himself as a hooker, club kid, glitter mess and party promoter. “I was working my ass off by bartending, go-go dancing, painting apartments, turning tricks and barely surviving The Big (Badass) Apple. He tells us about his way through his hectic past, the „excessive“ middle and the „weird“ now. A wonderful journey through space and time of the 80s and 90s of NYC and his life in Berlin in the early 20s. His Show "Puddles the Pelican", is taking place at Wilde Renate as a residency for one year. “This bird has me working like a dog,” says he/him. This weeks' podcast features Jim Shelley, Alan Blair, Nigel Sharp, Jeremy Wade, Steve Briggs, Kev Hewitt, Dave Levy, Terry Dempsey and Scott Lloyd in a celebratory look back at a selection of the standout moments (for a variety of reasons) during season two of the podcast. I think you'll agree the line-up of names alone would make some serious VIP carping guest, that's without their epic tales.Starting with Uncle Jim and his epic tale of how he in forty nights captures probably the most sort after of carp in the UK, the infamous Black Mirror.Next we look back at our very own Alan Blairs' journey into what has to be one of the finest stand out careers in the industry. This chapter Alan talks about it could have all gone seriously wrong and how he managed to find his way through some difficult times. When it comes to Yateley Nigel Sharp is an out and out legend, one of the very best to have fished the complex and when you consider the anglers that have fished there that's some statement. Mix this with one of the most iconic carp of all time “Bazil” you've got one incredible story that's for sure. This man has transcended angling and is an international superstar, biologist, scientist and all-round rock-hard adventurer. The star of the tv series “River Monsters” Jeremy Wade and in this epic podcast moment he describe his brush with death in the amazon during and ill-fated light aircraft flight. One of the true pioneers, gentlemen and a true Nash Tackle “lifer” Steve Briggs shares his incredible story of a 60lb+ carp caught from the beautiful Lac Du St Cassein and how this started Steve (and his partner Joan's) lifelong love affair with the placePossibly the deadliest day ticket anglers out there at the moment Kev Hewitt discusses (in a slightly awkward force and surprised way) his “edge” and think behind bait that has seen him produce consistent big hits of big fish on hard pressure waters up and down the country. This man has the mindset of a true champion whatever sport he chose, Dave Levy shares how this mindset led him to successfully capture a modern day iconic fish in the shape of the long powerful scaley mirror called “James”.Proper London geezer and life long “Hammers” fan Terry Dempsey takes a break from Urban Baits and from starring on BBC's Dragons Den to talk through and incredible capture of “Jack The Net Ripper” from back in the glory days of carp fishing. Finally, onto a modern day iconic carp in the shape of the Burghfield Common all 62lb+ of it, at least this is what it weight when the charismatic Scott Lloyd captured it. Scott shares how he was successful where so many others haven't been and still to this day haven't banked this most prized of big carp.Whatever you listen to the podcast for, information, entertainment, controversy or simply to stoke you angling fires this podcast has something for everyone. We hope it inspires you to listen back to episodes you may have missed or check out the new episodes which air every Sunday. A massive thanks for your support over the past forty-nine episodes and here's to forty-nine more.

This week joining Hassan in the podcast studio is global fishing superstar, biologist, author and star of the hit television series “River Monsters” Jeremy Wade.Fishing meets worldwide celebrity in this unprecedented podcast, we still can't believe we managed to get him on. I think it's safe to say and as you're about to discover Jeremy Wade is in a league of his own. Jeremy sets the scene by talking about his carp fishing exploits in the 1970s and 1980's in which time he managed to catch his current personal carp of 26lbs+ from Waveney Valley lakes back in 1977. Spoiler alert he has since managed to break that fishing our very own Nash Church Lake. Jeremy was also one of the youngest members of the British Carp Study Group (BCSG) joining at the age of just sixteen years old. Fishing was always in his blood and over his teenage years he shaped his choices to hopefully led him to a career where he could immerse himself in this passion for angling and water. After a number of different jobs in various sectors and armed with a Zoology degree Jeremy set out following another burning desire and that is to travel and explore. He soon made yearly pilgrimages to the likes of India and The Amazon in search of infamous exotic large freshwater species such as Golden Mahseer and the Arapaima. Year after year he refined his location and gained intel on these species and a chance meeting with a director led to him filming “Jungle Hooks” his first appearance on tv. The series featured him landing an incredible hand line caught 100lb+ Arapaima and surviving a plane crash. The series was extremely successful, and he moved some years later to film “Jungle Hooks India” a series in which the world was brought the first filmed sightings of the man eating Goonch catfish.Jeremy continued to live on a shoestring spending much off his time travelling or planning new adventures. He sold articles and photographs, but it was the development of “River Monsters” some years later that burst him into the public eye in incredible style. Jeremy talks about the process of filming these episodes along with the dangerous and incredible stories of things that happened “off camera” along the way. Jeremy talks about his favourite captures and locations as well as his appreciation for the team around him that make these amazing programmes come to life. After nine series River Monsters clearly struck a huge chord with a massive cross section of TV audiences and that's something that still humbles Jeremy to this very day. From huge giant Thailand stingray through to incredible man-eating bull sharks Jeremy tells the most incredible tales of these fearsome beasts that have succumbed to his rod and line. He also shares the story of his sound man being struck by lighting, him being held and gun point and him having to “sexually assault” a crocodile in the name of science. Finally, Jeremy discusses his goals and ambitions for the future as well as how he has handled his newfound celebrity. He talks about his love for UK fishing as well as one or two revelations about himself and his personal life outside of his tv work.Jeremy is a true gentleman, utter professional and incredibly intelligent. His stories and accounts will keep you hooked (no pun intended) through out but underneath it all there lies an extremely determined individual who has dedicated and sacrificed his whole life to shedding light on the real-life mysteries within freshwater, what a man and what a life!

This week I'm chatting to legendary tv angler Jeremy wade, This the last in of a series of podcasts this month talking to influential and celebrity anglers. I'm also working on a crowd funder this month Britains hidden fishes which I'm aiming to make a 1 hour long film on British fish, think blue planet but a much smaller budget and coincidentally Jeremy is narrating that film, there's a link to that in the description. I remember watching Jeremy in jungle hooks a few years before he blew up on river monsters and it was such breath of fresh air seeing all these weird and wonderful fish being caught by someone who was engaging and clearly invested in these animals. Jeremy has spent nearly 40 years trailing around the world catching fish and has since written books and started in many tv shows like river monsters, dark waters and mighty rivers. We talk about about the monsters that eluded him, his break into television and a catfish that swims up your penis along with loads of other adventures he's been on. This is part two of our discussion with Dr. Jeremy Wade Barrier about his twelve-year journey researching ancient manuscripts and writing his latest book “Witch Hunt in Galatia,” a book providing a new perspective on ways to understand Paul’s letter to the Galatians. Dr. Jeremy Wade Barrier is the Assistant Professor of Biblical Literature at Heritage Christian University and also did postdoctoral work as a Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow under Tobias Nicklas at the Universitat Regensburg, Germany. His last book "The Acts of Paul and Thecla: A Critical Introduction and Commentary" was written in 2009. He earned his PhD in Biblical Interpretations at the Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University. Check out his latest Book: Witch Hunt in Galtaia: Magic, Medicine & Ritual and the Occassion of Paul's Letter to the Galatians. https://www.amazon.com/Jeremy-Wade-Barrier/dp/1978709757 Approximately 2,000 years ago, some Jewish communities of Galatia in central Asia Minor believed they had fallen under a curse, argues Jeremy Wade Barrier. A fellow Jew named Paul wrote the letter we call Galatians to help them escape its effects. In the letter, Barrier argues, Paul called for the Jews in Galatia to stop practicing circumcision. The rite had fallen into disuse within many Jewish communities in the Roman Empire, but Barrier argues the Galatian Jews believed it was a talisman that would protect them from harm. As a further precaution, they needed to deal with the person who had brought this evil to their community. A witch hunt was underway, and some had concluded that the witch was none other than Paul. Barrier provides a reconstruction of the original occasion of Paul’s letter to the Galatians and shows how Paul defended himself from accusations of witchcraft by countering that the ritual that would protect them from the “Evil Eye” was not circumcision, but rather baptism. Through the ritual of baptism, they could receive healing from a material, yet divine, “breath” of God. Barrier also reconstructs an earlier understanding of this pneuma that was lost to subsequent Christianity under the influence of Neoplatonism. Blog post: http://www.mikedelgado.org/podcast/barrier/
Lets delve into the mysteries of our own world and this week we are going to look at two documentary series. Extinct or Alive with Forest Galate, and Mysteries of the Deep with Jeremy Wade. Is this a genre that we as humans have caused to go extinct or is it still thriving without human interaction. Hosted by Robbie Sweeney, and Benjamin Bate Edited by Benjamin Bate
A discussion with Dr. Jeremy Wade Barrier about his twelve-year journey researching ancient manuscripts and writing his latest book “Witch Hunt in Galatia,” a book providing a new perspective on ways to understand Paul’s letter to the Galatians. Dr. Barrier also challenges us to read the Bible with a critical eye -- and to question those passages that trouble us. He also shares reasons why some Christians are resistant to new scholarship on Scripture -- and why it’s important to consider the latest research to get a better understanding into the culture and meaning behind Biblical texts. Jack Glass, a 30+ year veteran of the Guided Fishing community, talks about his experiences fishing for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, walleye and smallmouth bass. Jack took River Monsters (Animal Planet) legend Jeremy Wade fishing for Sturgeon and got him his biggest fish he'd ever caught - a 9 foot sturgeon. Jack has fished for Spring Chinook, steelhead and many other species as a fishing guide out of Portland Oregon, and continues to this day to put people on fish. "It's about the experience" is his motto.

Click here to buy: https://adbl.co/2VOUDp5 Far from being a conventional 'how to' guide, this book is about the simple fundamental principles of fishing - a mindset for success. In other words, how to think like a fish. After starting to fish in rural England more than fifty ago, and going on to become a captor of large, wily carp in his teens, Jeremy Wade started combining angling with far-flung exploration in 1982 - a trip to northern India via Afghanistan in a plane that just weeks later was hit by a ground-to-air missile. Since then Jeremy have caught an unparalleled array of large and outlandish fish from challenging locations all over the world, originally in seat-of-the-pants solo travels and more recently in the company of a TV crew. Among the fish caught are a dozen freshwater species over the weight of 100 pounds, some of which were unknown even to anglers until recently. As these catches have come more to the public attention, many people have approached Jeremy about how they can improve their fishing results. Fishing is about deception, so it has to engage the brain. It is an exercise in problem solving, where no two sets of circumstances are exactly the same, where success is an artful blend of drawing on experience and keeping an open mind.

This week my interview is with Jeremy Wade of “River Monsters” fame. You may remember the episode where he caught a huge arapaima on an Orvis H3 and Mirage reel. He doesn’t always use a fly rod, but he does enjoy everything from those giant fish in exotic locations to a small wild brown trout river near his home in the UK. We talk about lots of things other than river monsters—what he enjoys about fly fishing, how he stays in shape for fighting those beasts, and about the pleasures of getting to know a water intimately instead of the pressure of having to produce for the camera. He has a new TV show and a book coming out soon—you’ll learn all about them on the podcast. In the Fly Box this week we have some great questions: What is the difference between wild, native, and holdover trout? How do I get small beads on hooks when they don’t want to go over the bend? What is the correct way to “haul in a fish”? Will upgrading my rod make me a better angler? Would it make sense to overload my 8-weight rod for pike and musky with a 9-weight line to throw those bigger flies? What is the best way to collect insects from my local river for reference? Who are some older authors you recommend for pleasure reading? Can I use my “saltwater” fluorocarbon leaders in Alaska? What things currently restricted by the rules of competitive angling would competitors use for their own fishing? And finally, yet another great tip by a listener on how to keep Thing-A-Ma-Bobbers from slipping on thinner sections of leaders
36. In his TV show, "River Monsters," angler Jeremy Wade searches the globe for man-eating sea creatures, but never once has Wade come across a fish so large that it can swallow a man whole...and alive! But that's exactly what happens to Old Testament prophet Jonah. Should we write this off as just another big fish tale? Or can we learn something from this really weird book of prophecy? The QCP gang will try to provide an overview of the book in this episode. #QuestioningChristianity

Jeremy Wade, host of Animal Planet's "River Monsters," is one of the more famous fisherfolks in the industry today. I personally always saw the guy as a globe-trotting Brit who believes every fish in the water wants to kill you. Well, it turns out that Jeremy Wade is much more than that. In this episode of The DrakeCast, Wade fully embraces his fear-mongering ways to alert us of the dangers that face the world's rivers. In this speech Wade explains how rivers have changed in his lifetime, and why these changes should scare us more than any of the toothy fish he's ever caught on camera. Many thanks to our sponsors Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures and Scott Fly Rods. A huge thank you to James Thull and MSU's Trout & Salmonid Special Collections Library for allowing us to use the audio from this speech. For a few photos and links to some of the material that Wade mentions in his speech, check out our website: http://www.drakemag.com/drakecast/1861-the-drakecast-fly-fishing-podcast-17-jeremy-wade-disappearing-river-monsters.html
